A Bright Idea
Like many successful innovations, it all began with a spontaneous conversation. Kenneth Persson, Professor of Water Resources Engineering at Lund University, and Ola Hansson, an experienced water management engineer, wondered if there was a smarter and more sustainable alternative to mercury-based UV lamps for water purification. LEDs, perhaps?
With the expertise of Lars Montelius, Professor Emeritus at the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University, a proof-of-concept solution was developed using innovative UVC LED technology. The prototype quickly gained interest from investors and the global market.
Today, Watersprint is one of the world’s leading companies in sustainable water disinfection, having launched a fourth generation of UVC LED products. Our strong ties to research at Lund University remain just as important. In 2024, the Watersprint family expanded with the acquisition of patents, product portfolios, and trademarks from Canadian Acuva Technologies another water disinfection company with deep university connections. This milestone, along with our presence in both North America and Europe, is shaping the future of the global UVC LED market.
UVC LED – A Proven Technology in a Reinvented Form
Ultraviolet (UV) light is a type of electromagnetic radiation that travels in waves or particles at different wavelengths and frequencies. UVC light (200–280 nm) is used for disinfection, as it deactivates the DNA and RNA of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens—preventing them from replicating.
The use of UVC light for drinking water disinfection has a history stretching back more than a century. The first full-scale water purification plant was built in 1910 in Marseille, France. UV disinfection has come a long way since its inception in the mid-20th century. Today, it’s a cornerstone of modern water treatment, safeguarding millions of people across diverse settings ranging from rural homes relying on private wells to sprawling urban centers such as New York City.
While UV disinfection has proven effective, traditional methods have limitations. Since conventional UV lamps come with many draw-backs, we believe that UVC LED is the future of safe water. As mercury-based technologies become obsolete and increasingly restricted, UVC LED now provides germicidal irradiation without the use of mercury offering a safer, more sustainable solution.
