When I think about what Pride means, I think about joy. I think about resistance. I think about possibilities. And I think about home.
It is an honor to step into the role of Executive Director of St Pete Pride — an organization with a deep legacy of celebration, activism and community care. This city, and this Pride, have long stood as a beacon for LGBTQ+ people in Florida and beyond. To lead this next chapter is both a personal milestone and a collective mission.
My journey here is grounded in service, in organizing and in love for our people. I’ve led teams, built organizations and poured myself into spaces where queer and trans folks — especially our youth, our elders, and our most marginalized — can feel seen, supported, and celebrated.
empowerment, cultural programming and year-round advocacy. We’re deepening our relationships, amplifying underrepresented voices and making sure that every person in our community — Black, brown, trans, disabled, undocumented, rural, houseless, and more — feels that St Pete Pride belongs to them.
St Pete Pride has always been more than a parade. It’s a reflection of who we are at our most vibrant, our most unified and our most unapologetic.
I come to this work as a community builder, as someone who believes in joy as a strategy and Pride as a year-round commitment.
St Pete Pride has always been more than a parade. It’s a reflection of who we are at our most vibrant, our most unified and our most unapologetic. We carry the legacy of those who fought before us, from Stonewall to the streets of St. Pete. We carry the brilliance of drag artists, youth leaders, chosen families, and everyday queers who show up and show out every June — and every day after.
This year, and in the years to come, we’re building something bold. Pride Month will always be our anchor, but our work cannot be confined to a single moment. Under my leadership, we are investing in community engagement, youth
I believe in showing up. I believe in transparency, accountability and making room at the table for new voices and fresh ideas. And I believe that when we lead with love, we build something unstoppable.
So I invite you to join us — in the streets, at the shows, in the hard conversations and in the joyful moments that remind us who we are. Whether you’re new to Pride or you’ve been marching for decades, know that your presence matters. Your story matters. And your pride is powerful.
With all my heart — thank you for trusting me with this role. I won’t take it lightly. Let’s build together.
Bior
Guigni, St Pete Pride Executive Director

Pride was never meant to be easy.
It began not as a parade but as a protest — a rebellion sparked by Black and Brown trans women who refused to accept invisibility or violence as the cost of survival. While our history is riddled with small acts of resistance prior to that moment at The Stonewall Inn, we have to acknowledge the spark that it created. But it remains a radical reminder: when we are under attack, we do not run. We rise.
This year, similar to the last few, we have witnessed an increase in the demonization of our Trans siblings. We have watched the discourse paint this community as villains and not Americans living their truth. In addition to these heinous pieces of legislation and outright terrorizing of this community, the calls to remove the “T” from LGBTQIA+ are louder than ever. These efforts are not just misplaced — they are dangerous. They betray our history, dishonor our heroes and fracture the unity that has always been our greatest strength. Our movement was born from trans resistance. To exclude trans people now is not only cowardice — it’s amnesia.
At a time when trans lives, especially Black and Brown trans lives, are under relentless assault, we must be even more deliberate in our love, our advocacy and our visibility. We owe it to those who came before us — not just to remember them, but to live as they did: bold, unflinching and ROOTED in joy.
Because joy, too, is resistance.
Our ancestors knew this. Even as they marched through riot lines and buried loved ones lost to violence, the AIDS epidemic or indifference, they danced. They sang. They threw bricks and parties. They refused to let oppression rob them of beauty, laughter or love. That joy — that audacious, defiant joy — is what built our movements. It’s what sustains us now.
As the first Black board president of St Pete Pride, I carry with me the weight of that legacy and the promise of our collective future. I do not take lightly the honor of serving the largest Pride in the state of Florida during a time when our rights are on the line and our stories are being erased. But I know this community. I know our strength.
This year, our theme is Rooted In — a tribute to the deep roots we've planted together here in St. Petersburg. We are rooted in resistance, in resilience, in love — and most importantly, in community.
For over two decades, this city has shown up: marching, organizing, celebrating and standing with one another through every high and low. We thank you for that unwavering support. As we look to the future, we remain committed to creating spaces that reflect the full richness of our community — spaces that are inclusive, joyful, and unapologetically queer. When we are rooted in our people, our history and our values, there is nothing we cannot grow.
To our trans siblings: We see you. We need you. We will never let you stand alone.
To every queer person living in fear or on the margins: Your story matters. You belong here.
And to all of us: Let us carry our grief, our rage and our hope together. Let us build a future rooted in radical inclusion, unapologetic pride and revolutionary love.
With every step forward, we remain rooted in joy, justice and you.
In solidarity and joy,
Dr. Byron Green-Calisch St Pete Pride Board President

St Pete Pride organizers estimate that over 300,000 people attended St Pete Pride 2024, securing its status as Florida’s largest LGBTQ+ Pride celebration. They expect to exceed that number in 2025.
That made securing new leadership a key focus for Dr. Byron Green-Calisch, board president. The nonprofit launched a nationwide search late last year and he led the charge, serving as interim executive director while overseeing a search for new board members and setting the stage for this year’s festivities.
“Going into year 23, we needed someone that had a tremendous amount of experience in the nonprofit space, as well as somebody that was passionate about the queer community,” Green-Calisch says of their executive director search.
The board found Bior Guigni, who “was the absolute perfect mix of both of those things,” he notes. The queer woman of color and immigrant has over a decade of nonprofit experience.
Guigni previously served as the chairperson for USA Wrestling and the CEO of Beat the Streets New England, a regional coalition that engages youth through the sport to build confidence and community. She used both positions to advocate for inclusion on and off the mat.
“Bior had well-documented experience and was anchored here to the Tampa Bay region,” Green-Calisch says. “We were overjoyed not only with her experience, but also her connection to youth — she’s brought a really deep, rich perspective.”
“I’ve always been a hospitality-driven person,” Guigni says. “Everything that I've done has been to serve others and to bring communities together … and what led me to St Pete Pride was the need to engage more with my community.
“I remember what it was like to be an immigrant kid of color in areas where I didn’t feel like I had community or where no one looked or felt like me,” she continues. “When you add all these different things with sexuality and my identity, that really led me to mission-driven work
so that people never had to feel that way. Where they always felt like there was a community or resource to connect with.”
Guigni was hired in January and officially started at the end of March. That’s also when the nonprofit first detailed its 2025 season, sharing its “Rooted In” theme and announcing 11 signature events.
They began with Shades of Pride, detailed on p. 31. St Pete Pride’s annual celebration of Black, queer joy welcomed TS Madison and more. The Mx St Pete Pride pageant followed May 25 to crown this year’s royal representatives before the city's Pride flag raising.
Guigni says she’s worked together with Green-Calisch and the board to support St Pete Pride 2025 while beginning to plan St Pete Pride 2026.
“It’s been really exciting to have a team that wanted to dive in and explore what the next few years can look like,” she says. “St Pete Pride is not far from 25 years and making positive changes to continue to build and grow as we head into that milestone is something that really got me excited about taking this role on.”
Including Green-Calisch, those efforts are supported by 11 LGBTQ+ advocates. Board veterans Stephanie Morge and Darius Lightsey serve as vice president and secretary, respectively.
“I joined the board to advocate for the Black/Brown LGBTQIA segment of our community,” says Lightsey, who serves as committee chair for Shades of Pride. “Our pride celebration gets better every year. What I love most about this year is the beautiful diversity our celebration displays … I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Molly Robison, who has served in various capacities, also remains on the board.
“I’m always excited to celebrate love, community and acceptance,” she says. “I love the theme this year because I think Pride is many things to many people. I hope everyone can embrace their Pride and loudly proclaim it’s rooted in joy, love, community, resistance, power, St. Petersburg, friendship, acceptance, resilience, chosen family, struggle, compassion and more.”
Alexander Green serves as treasurer, while fellow board newcomers Zoe Blair-Andrews, Trent Brock, Susan DiDino, Travis Geerdes, DeMario Jives and Chris Trevena round out the body. River Bates, Jim DelRio, Duncan Kennedy, Immani Love and more also played significant parts in organizing this year's celebration.
“Joining the board allows me to actively collaborate and engage in events for and with the community, building bridges and partnerships,” DiDino explains. “When we connect, we heal and we grow — ultimately, we are stronger together.”
“I wanted to join because I wanted to do my part in helping the community,” Trevena adds. “In the political climate we are currently in, I think now is the time we should all be stepping up in making our voices heard and I believe this is one way I am making mine heard.”
Geerdes, who previously volunteered with St Pete Pride as parade director, echoes the sentiment.
“When LGBTQ+ rights are under attack, I felt it was important to get involved in showing that we are here, we are not going anywhere and we will not be brought down by people who don’t want us to show our pride,” he explains. “We exist and contribute to all parts of the St. Pete community.”
“We all deserve dignity, safety, and equality, and I'm ready to keep doing my part to protect that,” Brock also notes. “I'm looking forward to connecting with everyone at this year's events and continuing those conversations throughout the year.”
“Every year our board gets more and more diverse, and I think this year we have brought on diverse life experiences and work experiences,” Green-Calisch says. “This board is committed to making St Pete Pride even more inclusive than it has been in years before.
“Every one of their interviews mentioned their
desire to continue to push St Pete Pride forward, which is exciting because that's how I felt when I joined this board,” he continues. “They are all committed to expanding St Pete Pride and growing this organization. Maybe soon we can break the Top 5 Prides in the country.”
Guigni believes partnerships will help make substantial growth like that possible.
“I want to connect with all the other incredible organizations that are doing great things and all the other Prides that are happening across the state to really make sure that we are working together and supporting each other,” she says. “Especially over the next couple years.
“There are so many areas of divisiveness in this world that it doesn't have to be from us,” she notes. “We can continue to work together, build together, and even in a state like Florida, provide safe, inclusive, joyful, supportive, engaging environments and opportunities for everyone in our community.”

Dear LGBQT+ Residents, Visitors and Allies,
LGBTQ+
Welcome to St. Petersburg, Florida — a city where everyone belongs, and where every person is valued for exactly who they are.
As Mayor, I am proud to say that for the 11th consecutive year, St. Pete has earned a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index. That’s not just a number — it’s a reflection of our commitment to fairness, equity, and opportunity for all who call our city home.
We know these are challenging times for many in the LGBTQ+ community. Across the nation, hard-fought rights and basic dignities are being questioned. Here in St. Pete, we want you to know clearly and without hesitation: we stand with you. We support you. And we will continue to make St. Pete a place where you are seen, heard, and welcomed.
Pride Month is a celebration of love, resilience, and the progress we’ve made — but it’s also a reminder of the work that still lies ahead. In St. Pete, we remain committed to building a community where inclusion is not just an ideal, but a daily practice.
Whether you’re visiting us for Pride, or you’re part of our community year round, thank you for making St. Pete stronger by being exactly who you are.
Happy Pride Month!
We Are St. Pete,
Mayor Kenneth T. Welch
Dear LGBTQ Family & Friends,
Each June, Pride Month offers us intentional time to celebrate — to gather in joy, in protest, and in remembrance. But this year, that celebration feels heavier. More urgent.
Across our state and the nation, LGBTQ+ people — especially our trans siblings — are facing an onslaught of harmful policies and rhetoric aimed at erasing our identities and undermining our rights. These attacks are real. They’re painful. And they’re meant to instill fear and shame in people simply for being who they are.
But our community has faced fear before. We have faced ignorance. We have faced silence. And every time, we have met those moments with resistance, resilience, and love.
Here in St. Petersburg, we want to be clear: You belong here. You are safe here. Our city remains committed to being a place where LGBTQ+ people — of all ages, backgrounds, and identities — are not just accepted, but celebrated. That commitment is more than words. It’s reflected in our policies, our partnerships, our leadership, and our presence — especially in moments like these. I’m so grateful to see so many familiar faces this Pride Month — and to welcome new ones who are just discovering the beauty, strength, and solidarity of this community. Whether you’re walking in the parade, waving a flag for the first time, or simply soaking in the joy of being surrounded by people who see you — know that you matter. You are loved. And you are not alone.
Thank you for showing up. For yourselves, for each other, and for what’s possible when we refuse to back down.
With so much pride,
Eric Vaughan LGBTQ+ Liaison City of St. Petersburg
Ryan Williams-Jent
Traditionally held in June, Shades of Pride is “a bold and unapologetic exploration of the multifaceted brilliance of Black queer identity.” This year’s event welcomed 250 Pridegoers.
“St Pete Pride has been intentional about providing programming for all the diverse communities within the LGBTQIA spectrum,” says Darius Lightsey, board secretary and the event’s committee chair. “Shades of Pride is a singular opportunity to honor that history rooted in resilience, creativity and community.”
This year’s “No Shade, All Power” elevated “the journeys of Black queer individuals — past, present and future.” LGBTQ+ activist and entertainer TS Madison returned as host with fellow advocate Craig “The Writer” Stewart. Madison, a Florida native, discussed the importance of Shades of Pride with Watermark Out News in 2022.
“There is a lot of racism in Florida. A lot of racism and a lot of homophobia,” she shared. “[Shades of Pride] is important because we need to walk through those streets, we need to … let them know that we’re Black and proud; we’re Black, gay, trans, queer and everything and damn proud of it, honey.”
Lightsey says organizers were thrilled to continue their work with the entertainer, who recently opened a sanctuary for Black trans women in Atlanta with the Black, LGBTQ+-focused NAESM, Inc. He says she “stands for the rights of all people,” aligning with St Pete Pride’s decades of work in Tampa Bay.
Pete Pride kicked off its 2025 season with Shades of Pride May 2 at Nova 535, the nonprofit’s annual celebration of Black, queer joy.
This year’s event included a cocktail hour, cultural food, a panel examining sexual health and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and a demonstration paying homage to ballroom culture. Attendees also enjoyed performances from celebrity comedian Akeem Woods and members of St Pete Pride’s 2024 Royal Court.
“Being Miss St Pete Pride means a lot for me, because it lets other Black trans women know that we can do more in our community,” former Miss St Pete Pride Kiala Santi shared. “We can be a voice. We can be an activist, and there are so many ways to be an activist, so it just feels really good.”
Guests also had access to a live taping of Madison and Stewart’s “PHAG TAWLK.” Stewart told Watermark Out News ahead of time that he was excited to bring their talk show to St. Petersburg.
“Now, more than ever, we must stand in our truth considering what’s happening with this administration,” he says of President Donald Trump’s antiLGBTQ+ actions. “The timing couldn’t be more perfect for us to bring ‘PHAG TAWLK’ to Florida and remind the queer people who live there to resist and never stop pushing back.”
Lightsey said Shades was “a wonderful event open to all segments of the community and our allies.” He also promised that like it, “all our Pride events this year will emphasize how Pride is rooted in love, courage, resilience, resistance and community.”

St
Pete Pride entertainment offers something for everyone. From fan favorite local acts to international icons, organizers will show how the celebration is rooted in music and more this year.
“St Pete Pride is excited to bring a variety of entertainment to the main stage,” says Immani Love, festival and entertainment coordinator. “We have some really big celebrity names and are thrilled to be bringing back some local favorites that really represent the diversity and abundance of talent in our community right here in St. Petersburg.”
Love previously served as a St Pete Pride board member. She says her new role “is the perfect blend of my passion for and vast experience with the entertainment industry and the inner workings of St Pete Pride,” allowing her to experience “the best of both worlds.”
Organizers have worked hard to showcase that on the stage in 2025. Learn about two of this year’s headliners here and read about more St Pete Pride 2025 entertainment in issues of Watermark Out News and at StPetePride.org.
You may recognize Durand Bernarr’s vocals supporting artists like Erykah Badu, but the singing sensation has worked hard to make a name of his own. Just ask the Grammys.
Bernarr was nominated at the 2025 awards for “En Route,” which was up for Best Progressive R&B Album. The eighttrack EP was created in just five days.
"A lot of this work I've been putting out is just trying to show people that there's another way to express ourselves in our art,” he told Grammy.com. “It's not only music and musicians I'm inspired by … There's so many different ways we can approach R&B. My voice can do a lot of things, so I want to make sure that I'm giving people what they want and also what they don't know they need."
Audiences can experience the entertainer’s skills firsthand at this year’s Friday Night Concert.
Denali skated into the hearts of America during season 13 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” placing eighth but securing her spot as an instant fan favorite for the franchise.
In part, that’s because the entertainer was the first queen to compete on ice skates. Denali is also a choreographer and double gold medalist in U.S. Figure Skating’s moves and freestyle category, making her one memorable competitor.
More recently, Denali joined the cast of “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars.” Its landmark 10th season premiered in May on Paramount+, with queens facing off in a new tournament-style series for a spot in the “Drag Race” Hall of Fame.
“Drag’s gold medal b**** has entered the tournament! Denali is an ice-skating athlete turned lip-sync assassin, and she’s trained hard for the Olympics of Drag,” World of Wonder announced before the competition began. “Queens beware — she just might triple lutz and leave the other queens skating on thin ice!”
Next up, she skates into St Pete Pride as one of this year’s Saturday Night headliners.
Summertime brings fun times outside with your dog, but a word of caution from your friends at VEG (Veterinary Emergency Group): the great outdoors can be not-so-great when the temperature spikes. Like humans, dogs can experience heatstroke, which requires immediate medical attention. Here’s what to know:
How high is too high?
A dog’s normal temperature is 100-102.5ºF. Heatstroke is defined as a canine’s temperature exceeding 105.8ºF. So, if your doggo runs a temp above 103ºF, they’re at risk of developing heatstroke.
Is your dog at risk?
All dogs are at risk of developing heatstroke, but some carry a higher risk:
• Large-breed dogs with thick hair coats such as Newfoundlands
• Brachycephalic or “smush faced” breeds such Bulldogs and Pugs
• Obese dogs and dogs with pre-existing respiratory disease
Recognize the symptoms
Heat stroke doesn’t hide; you’ll probably know it when you see it. Signs include:
• Collapse, labored breathing or excessive panting
• Dull thinking, which may present as lethargy, depression, less responsive
• Signs of bleeding, such as bruised skin or gums
• Vomiting or diarrhea
What to do if your dog gets heatstroke
• Get to a cool area
• Offer cool water to drink, if there is no vomiting
• Wet down your dog with cool, not cold, water
• Don’t cover your pet with a wet towel – it can insulate and trap heat in
• Run the A/C in the car on high and call VEG and let us know you’re on the way!
• Never leave your pet in a hot car—even parking in a shaded area isn’t safe
• Dogs often keep playing past the point that they should. Only exercise your fur baby in cool hours of the day
• Ensure access to a shaded area and fresh water
• Excessive panting is a cue that your pet is overheated
Help is always near! VEG ERs are open 24 hours—including weekends and holidays—for heatstroke and any other pet emergency. No appointments taken; come right in and see a doctor right away. Best of all, you never have to leave your pet’s side.

TransNetwork launched in March 2023 to build “a community where trans and gender expansive people thrive as healthy, connected and supported members of society.”
The organization was co-founded by LGBTQ+ advocates Tristan Byrnes, Andy Citino and Andre Clarke. They came together to combat mounting attacks on trans health care in Florida as well as the misinformation surrounding other anti-trans policies and laws, and have since been joined by board member Callen Jones and more.
“People were absolutely petrified,” Clarke reflected to Watermark Out News. “We were hearing about friends, relatives and loved ones moving out of state ... We needed to start something to fill a void.”
The group began by holding town halls at LGBTQ+-affirming churches, welcoming legal experts and LGBTQ+ activists to quell fears. Since their founding they
have partnered with organizations throughout the region to unite trans Floridians in new and exciting ways, from affirming picnics that celebrate trans joy to inclusive events that have raised thousands for equality. The group has also partnered with and supported St Pete Pride.
“What we hear from the trans community more than anything is that there is a need for a place to come together to know we’re not alone and to be amongst our people,” Byrnes has said. “We are going to have more of these types of events because that’s what’s needed. As we hold more events our mission is becoming more defined.”
“Network is part of our name for a reason,” Citino added.
Whether it’s through offering connections to healthcare, legal assistance or community support, TransNetwork exists now as a source of hope and empowerment for transgender individuals in St. Petersburg and beyond. Through collaboration with other local organizations, education every step
of the way and activism throughout the year, they’re working toward a future where everyone can live authentically and freely — no matter their gender identity.
Join them at St Pete Pride 2025 as they welcome you to Transtastic, the TransPride March and more.

Lovethe Golden Rule has offered LGBTQ+-inclusive care in Tampa Bay for over a decade. Inspired by its motto “Be Happy, Help Others,” the nonprofit clinic offers primary care, gender-affirming care, chronic care management and other services to help those in need.
Dr. Bob Wallace — a pioneer in HIV and AIDS treatment who is largely known as Dr. Bob — founded Love the Golden Rule in 2013. Determined to make a difference after the loss of his partner to
AIDS, he “dedicated himself to opening a clinic that would help others receive the life-saving treatment his partner could have been saved by.”
“Established with a mission to serve and represent all communities, particularly focusing on those often marginalized, including low-income and LGBTQIA individuals, we have committed ourselves to a model of care that emphasizes kindness, respect and inclusivity,” the clinic
notes on its website. “Over the years, we’ve grown and evolved, continually striving to break down barriers to healthcare access and ensure every patient feels valued and understood, regardless of their financial situation or background.”
The group regularly partners and supports organizations like St Pete Pride. This year, Love the Golden Rule also launched a new fundraiser to support its own advocacy.
The inaugural Fashion with Passion fundraiser was held April 26, a charity gala featuring a runway event that benefited its gender-affirming healthcare and more. Dr. Wallace told Watermark Out News it was designed to elevate the trans community in particular.
“Most of the models were transgender people … it just means a lot to see these young women get out there and really express themselves,”
he shared. “Our whole idea here is diversity and acceptance and understanding that we don’t have to judge anyone … We’re all created equally, and I believe and push that wholeheartedly.”
Estelle, one of the evening’s models and clinic’s patients, said participating “meant a lot to me.” She also praised Love the Golden Rule’s “openness and dedication” to serving LGBTQ+ Tampa Bay.
“Love the Golden Rule helped me out at a time where my health care was suspended due to legislation,” she shared. “… They do crucial work. It’s lifesaving work.”

Veterinary Emergency Group was founded to help people and their pets when they need it most. VEG provides 24/7 expert emergency care for dogs, cats and other beloved animals to help them sit, stay and heal.
“Avoid the guessing game and don’t delay … VEG is the place to go with any kind of pet — even exotics — for any pet emergency,” their website reads. It also promises that because “emergency is all we do … we do it best.”
VEG was co-founded in 2014 by Dr. David Bessler and David Glattstein, animal advocates who wanted to improve the veterinary industry. In the last 12 months the organization has helped over 560,000 animals with locations across the country.
That includes Florida, where VEG “provides pet owners with trusted, reliable emergency vet and animal hospital services including urgent care, surgeries, x-rays, ultrasounds and more," they advise. "Whether you're in Jacksonville, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, or somewhere in between, VEG is open 24-hours every day to help you and your pet.”
Their St. Petersburg location at 9675 4th St. N. has been well received in the pet-friendly city.
“Sometimes it’s obvious when your pet needs immediate help. But sometimes they just seem ‘off,’” the location notes. “That’s where our emergency vets in St. Petersburg come in. From vomiting to complex surgeries, we treat emergency and urgent care needs for all kinds of pets — even avians and exotics! Discover the VEG difference, with our open floor plan hospitals, pet-parent participation, and an emergency-focused team that’s always ready to expect the unexpected.”
VEG’s unique brand of care will extend to St Pete Pride this year in an exciting partnership. Attendees will see Pet First Aid tents at three signature events in 2025 — Youth & Family Day, the Parade Day Festival and the Street Festival — which are detailed on p. 39. Each will have on-site emergency aid for pets in need, inclusive swag and more.
“At VEG, we’re proud to stand with the LGBTQIA+ community and celebrate everything that makes each individual and each pet unique,” says Vanessa De Las
Casas, VEG Senior Associate and Market Growth Partner. “Our mission is to help people and their pets when they need it most, and that means creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming space for everyone who walks through our doors.
“Diversity, equity, and inclusion are more than values to us, they’re essential to how we care, connect and grow,” she continues. “We’re excited to be part of St Pete Pride, a vibrant celebration of love, identity, and community, and to continue championing a culture of openness, togetherness and love.”
