ed is always the color of the day when it comes to the first Saturday of June at the Magic Kingdom and the multitude of events that surround it. But to us, 2013’s Big Gay Gathering in Orlando is shaping up to be very Green.

REDUCED: Events have been streamlined. Gone are movie screenings, book club readings and anything at Universal Orlando— including Hard Rock Live.

The venue once presented celebrity comedians, and for many years was home to a popular Sunday evening circuit party. That event has gone AWOL. Also missing are the upstarts. One promoter who offered a second menu of circuit crowd options cancelled before last year’s weekend ever began, while a third bear group declined to return after last year’s low bookings.

We’re most curious about the disappearance of sober “We Are Not Saints” activities, but since their members are anonymous we don’t know who to ask.

REUSED: Thanks to a “tried-and-true” formula

you won’t be able to swim in any host hotel’s pool without hearing a DJ lay down some mad beats…which will be indistinguishable from the ones before. Or after.

And just when you thought the zealots had given up protesting Gay Day, here comes perpetual defeatists A Million Moms! The Moms say the event is “planned with the intent to desensitize children.”

Frankly, with the amount of social lubricants that flow throughout the weekend, it’s not the kids getting desensitized.

RECYCLED: After a brief hiatus, Johnny Chisholm and his One Mighty Weekend are back. So, too, is Arabian Nights as a venue for the after-hour circuit parties that were once relegated to a hotel basement ballroom.

A big Saturday night theme park party has also returned—albeit to Epcot’s World Showcase—and promoters promise a “new and improved formula,” which apparently means that there wont be any rides open.

RELOCATED: Several groups have moved to new host hotels—Girls in Wonderland to the Sheraton Lake Buena Vista Resort; Tidal Wave Weekend to the Holiday Inn Lake Buena Vista Downtown; and Orlando Black Pride to the Lake Buena Vista Resort Hotel Best Western.

Also keeping the weekend environmentally green, an increase in the number of shuttles offered.

Participants can save gas, and the risk of driving under the influence, by taking chartered busses from the host hotels to the promoter’s biggest events.

Even the Parliament House will offer shuttles from the GayDayS host hotel to the landmark resort.

But at the heart of it all, what remains completely the same is that on the first Saturday of June this year—June 1, to be exact— thousands of LGBTs will visit Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom en masse.

It’ll be the 23rd consecutive time it’s happened, and doesn’t look like it’s going to stop—or be stopped— anytime soon.

The original mass gathering of LGBTs in a theme park, Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom, has spawned similar outings at amusement parks across the globe. And nearly all of them also encourage the wearing of red T-shirts! Though there’s little “official” about this very unofficial outing, there are some traditions that have carried on year after year:

Gay and lesbian youth groups have been known to meet here.

12 p.m. // Pre-parade Cocktail Break Outer Rim Lounge, Contemporary Resort

Sometimes you need a coolingoff cocktail, and since none can be had inside the Magic Kingdom, this is the place to go.

1 p.m. // Lesbian Express Town Square

Show up early at the Main Street Railroad station for a full round-trip view of the park.

1 p.m. // Annual Bear Gathering Country Bear Jamboree

The ursine set traditionally meets at the Frontier Land show..

A group ride for leather lovers.

3 p.m. // Parade Cinderella’s Castle, Magic Kingdom

It’s as close to a Pride parade as you’ll ever get in a theme park. Though the route will be lined with red shirts, the deepest concentration of LGBTs will be in front of Cinderella’s Castle and on Main Street.
