FALL AT YOUR FEET J
ust as our thumbs are turning into pruned-yet-prehensile diversions – just as the leaks in our roofs are reminding us that Florida summers don’t bring the pain until their very bitter end, just ask our checkbooks – there on the horizon, right there next to the thermometer that actually goes below 80 degrees fahrenheit, a sense of hope awaits our arrival. It’s like a nicely appointed chauffer waiting at the bottom of the airport escalator holding nothing but a sign that says: “You’re home. It’s going to be fine.” There are sounds and colors everywhere! OK, maybe we’re just a little wet. from Sarasota, Tampa, Tampa Bay, St. Pete, Orlando and everything else pushing east toward the Space Coast. As comprehensive as we’d like to be, we’ll never catch everything. But the fact that we even have these options makes us feel even better about nesting in this regions where, well, we never have to salt or shovel our driveways. So take this tome, tuck it in your purse or briefcase, and remind yourself – when you’re feeling so stressed out in that office elevator that you may just throw a cup of coffee into the face of the babbling brook of inhumanity pressed uncomfortably against you – that life springs anew in the Florida fall. We’ve got some sadness to bury. Let’s do it with some entertainment, shall we? Happy fall! Arts Listings Begin on pg.9 | |
WATERMARK’S FALL ARTS GUIDE 2016
Well, this fall promises more than the middling in its autumnal gusts of artistic splendor. Gazing through the reams of events available as the summer rain pelts our heads, we can’t help but smile at how far Central Florida and Tampa Bay and all of our coverage area have come in the realms of entertaining distractions and life-affirming sing-alongs. From giant theaters like the Straz or Dr. Phillips Center, to the theme parks (of course) and all the way down to the community theaters, dance troupes, concert halls and cultural centers, there is always something to do. If you’ve been looking for a guiding light to get you to said somethings, then welcome to our gracious Fall Arts Guide. In these pages, you’ll find a fine sampling of what our region has to offer in artistic flourishes,

THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF
THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME
N
obody saw this coming: a quiet novel based on the turmoil of a 15-year-old boy on the autism spectrum in the wake of the death of a dog becomes a huge bestseller upon its 2003 release. Though coined a mystery – largely given the historical Arthur Conan Doyle reference in its title – the only true mystery to the actual novel came in the form of the discovery of human differences in interaction and processing information. Rather than florid language and actionpacked narratives, original author Mark Haddon stayed true to his 15-year-old protagonist Christopher’s lack of connection and included sparse illustrations as feelings when appropriate. To everyone’s surprise, the novel translated brilliantly to stage, full of graphed and mathematical choreography set to hypnotic rhythms, emotional monologues and a narrative that was more about the inside of the mind than the outside traffic of plot movement to reconciliation. It’s a trip through how the wounded adolescent mind works.

TEGAN & SARA
P
erpetually perceived as new artists on the poppier side of the indie-rock playing field, twins Tegan and Sara are more likely to be found on the playlists of your fun sister with green hair than they are on the in the darker corners of your angry brother’s shoegazing psychosis. Eight albums and 16 years into this crazy machine called the music industry, the LGBT allies (who are often mistaken for a couple, even though they are twins, which makes it really weird) have hit a new stride and, in the process, transcended their “alternative” shackles for pure pop abandon. The duo were oddly birthed from the advice of Neil Young, who effectively told the sisters to maximize altruistic struggles in the business in lieu of hopping onto whatever pop bandwagon happened to be driving by. They took that advice, which was a smart move considering that they fill concert halls with ease these days. Heartthrob, released in 2013, introduced Tegan and Sara to a whole new audience. That record broke out the bells and whistles of ‘80s production bleeping irony and swung open the doors to greater success. In June, they cracked the Billboard Top 20 with Love You to Death, a continuation of their ascent from the low-fi to the dance floor. Expect to bounce a lot.

PET SHOP BOYS
P
op connoisseurs Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have been weaving their slightly wan narratives and poetic notions through the web of electronic melodicism for three decades now, stopping here and there to side-eye their contemporaries, but mostly existing in a league of their own among intellectuals and circuit queens alike. When single “West End Girls” punctured the heights of the global charts in the early ‘80s, nobody knew what to make of the pair. Were they rapping, “Sometimes, you’re better off dead with a gun in your hand that’s pointed at your head,” with rolled eyes, or were they tapping into some brackish cultural development we had yet to realize? The answer, of course, was the latter. But, as Pet Shop Boys – through ballet, film, music, soundtracks, costumes atop eyerolls – you needn’t know or needn’t care. “We were never being boring,” they declared in 1990. They still aren’t. This year’s release of Super, an ecstatic mélange of dance beats with dirges (spoiler: the dance beats generally win), Tennant and Lowe have once again tapped the golden rings of the Top of the Pops and proven that their legacy will forever remain intact. Also, if you want to see a show, you have to see a Pet Shop Boys show. Fact.

HEART WITH JOAN JETT
WATERMARK’S FALL ARTS GUIDE 2016
T

here was that odd moment of corrections, that necessary splash of vindication that came in late 2012 when Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson lit up the Kennedy Center Honors by performing the most hallowed of all classic rock tracks in front of its original composer. That “Stairway to Heaven” moment was enough to make Robert Plant shed a tear. Nobody ever doubted the talent of Heart, two northwestern sisters who pushed all of the boundaries in the 1970s stuffed-pants music scene. Where things went afoul, though, was in the MTV heyday of big hair and the bodices to match. Legend has it that Heart were marketed as everything from lesbian sisters to overly decorated madams. The Wilson sisters bit the poison fruit of success – as you do – but, once the weight that comes with age came along, they became less a priority and more an MOR mediocrity. “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You” remains the best-worst song ever, though. These days, the ladies are working on their own terms, without A&R types wielding tape measures. And with Joan Jett in tow on this tour, expect some beautiful noise to rock your own stockings off.

BILLY ELLIOT THE MUSICAL
WATERMARK’S FALL ARTS GUIDE 2016
Y

ou might remember the first time you cried while watching young Billy Elliot prove his choreographed mettle in front of a mid-‘80s audience plagued by poverty and a coal-miner’s strike. At its core, Billy Elliot was a story of tolerance even during times of adversity and ignorance, something that resonated with films of that genre illuminating the powers of talent over perceptions of sexuality. Key to the story, though, was that the character Billy Elliot was only 11 years old, so the territory was a little less trodden. Elton John, he of the Ryan White Foundation and everything that came with it, took the story to the stage in the UK in 2005. Billy Elliot is, of course, a natural for a musical setting, given that it’s entire story – at least that beyond the strife of a community in economic strife – is based on the dancing of one inspiring child. That vision was heavily lauded, with Laurence Olivier Awards and Tony Awards effectively pre-written before its magical stage debuts on both sides of the Atlantic. What was once a small voice told by small feet became a critical blockbuster musical singing the song of our times: tolerance and acceptance.

lthough she may be known as a “real tough cookie with a long history,” Benatar isn’t quite the bullheaded feminist/hooker her earlier videos might have had you believe (“Love is a Battlefield has the best shimmy ever, though). When we last spoke to her more than a decade ago, she and husband Neil Girlado, her longtime guitarist, were more interested in family and home life than they were in bodyshots and stage diving. None of that should come as a huge surprise. Benatar was originally interested in attending the Julliard School and pursuing classical vocal lessons. After a series of ups and downs trying to find her foot in the showbiz door, Benatar took center stage in the MTV zeitgeist just as the ‘80s began. “Heartbreaker,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” and, as this tour is named, “We Live for Love” soon followed, and Benatar became a household name. In the ensuing years, Benatar has remained relevant on her own terms, Benatar remains unfazed by the dizzying heights of the charts, these days. She still belongs. She just belongs on the road.
