MBA wants dedicated space jamie hyman Orlando | The Metropolitan Business Association (MBA) might make a move toward brick and mortar. MBA President Gina Duncan said they want an LGBT Chamber of Commerce office that would house the MBA and also Come Out with Pride, which falls under the umbrella of the MBA. “Ideally, [there would be] a visitor’s center on the first floor where people can get literature, see videos, et cetera on LGBT businesses, restaurants, events, things like that,” Duncan

said. “Supplemental to that, we would also have meeting areas and offices for the MBA so we could hold meetings there and it would give us a foundational credibility aspect.” Duncan said dedicated office space is a key component when seeking corporate sponsors. “It shows we’re a solid, growing, viable entity and part of Orlando’s economic community,” she said. They’d also like to rent office space to small, independent businesses that would benefit from having a mailing address. “All of this is contingent upon funding,” Duncan said. “Leadership of the MBA is

working to meet with and share our vision with some major corporate sponsors we worked with for COWP, to see if we can get foundation sponsors to help with the cost and rent for the first year.” She said MBA membership has grown to where they can almost pay for the space based on membership alone, but the sponsorships will be necessary in the first year to kick off the project. So where would the MBA’s headquarters be located? Duncan said the board is looking at a few locations in Thornton Park, but nothing has been decided yet. She said that the goal is to put a lease into effect by the beginning of March, but that is pending funding and MBA Board approval. | l |

Orlando | A gay-friendly and patriotic project inspired by Veterans’ Day is now flying high. After marching in Orlando’s Veterans’ Day parade for the first time, a group of local vets raised money to plant a flagpole in front of The (LGBT) Center. A U.S. flag and a flag bearing The Center’s colorful logo now fly side by side. More than 100 people watched a dedication and memorial ceremony on Jan. 22, which featured a performance by the Orlando Gay Chorus and several speakers honoring veterans, especially those who have served in silence. The project is the first of its kind in Florida, and the third in the nation. | l |

Tallahassee | Fingers are crossed that a workplace discrimination bill will make its way through the state legislature this year. Representative Scott Randolph (D-Orlando) has introduced the legislation, which simply prohibits employment discrimination for gay and lesbian employees statewide. “Florida needs to show that it’s a state that welcomes diversity and protects diversity,” he said. Randolph said the bill hasn’t yet been given any committee assignments, but he hopes it gets a Senate hearing this year, which would “put pressure on the House” to also have a hearing. | l |

Apopka | Investigators have a new clue in the attack of famous boxer Christy Martin—a passerby found a bloody purse along an Apopka road, confirmed to belong to Martin. Martin’s husband and trainer, Jim Martin, allegedly stabbed, shot and beat the boxer two months ago in their Orlando home. Reportedly, the attacks happened after Christy Martin told her husband she was leaving him for a woman. Christy Martin was able to escape and get to the hospital, and now Jim Martin is in jail awaiting trial on charges of attempted murder. The purse was found one mile from where Jim Martin was arrested. It’s under examination by a forensics team. | l |

COWP: Big changes ahead

jamie hyman

Orlando | Orlando’s premiere Pride event is going to look a little different in 2011. Come Out With Pride (COWP) Executive Director & Senior Executive Producer Mikael Audebert said the biggest change is moving COWP from Sunday to Saturday. “Saturday is when people party,” he said. The parade and festival will stay mostly the same, but Audebert said there will also be some big changes in the evening entertainment. “We’re not bringing a huge talent this year from out of state, but moving forward with a complete fireworks show over Lake Eola,” he said. “We’ve already gotten the approvals needed.” He said the switch to fireworks is already in the budget, but will actually be a money saver for COWP. Total expenses for last year’s stage talent were about $30,000. Fireworks are estimated to cost about $11,000. “The talent was never a big draw because of limited space and people tend to leave after the parade,” he said. “Now, people can

gather around the lake, and we’re creating fireworks lounges spread around.” This means a timeline shift of two hours—the parade will now start at 4 p.m. It’s also shifting directions, going back to the 2009 route, because of the downtown addition of Amway Arena. Additionally, organizers plan to choose three or four floats do brief performances in front of the emcee’s booth. The main speaker for 2011 will be Orlando Sentinel writer Scott Maxwell. Audebert said the whole thing will be over around 8 p.m., and then revelers will be invited to move to Mr. Sisters for a ticketed after party event that will feature entertainment being forgone by the lake. “Mr. Sisters stepped forward financially and logistically in taking care of this,” Audebert said. “We’re working with clubs and bars that approach us and participate financially as well, because they will benefit.” COWP is also hosting a contest where winning photos will be featured in the event’s marketing materials. Visit ComeOutWithPride.com for details. | l |

Barber Fund event raises $22K jamie hyman Orlando | They only had 13 days of planning, but organizers say an event to benefit hair stylist John “Tweeka Weed” Barber raised more than $22,000, with money still coming in. In early December, Barber was diagnosed with sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. He’s undergoing daily radiation and chemotherapy and is optimistic for a full recovery. He has health insurance, but deductibles were stacking up into the thousands of dollars so his friend, local performer Blue Starr, decided to put together a fundraiser to help. Starr pulled in Sue-Bee Laginess and a few other local leaders to help, culminating in an event that featured live and silent auctions, raffles and about a dozen performers at the Stardust Lounge on Jan. 23. Even Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer stopped by and said a few words. “The place was jam packed with people, and I don’t know how the fire marshal didn’t come in and shut us down,” Laginess said. Starr said the way people jumped in to help is a testament to what Barber has given to his community. “I’ve done a lot of fundraisers and I raise a lot of money every year but this was the quickest and easiest event I’ve done because of the people [who helped out],” she said. “It was unbelievable to

watch the community rally and show their support.” Starr said when Barber saw the number of items donated to his cause, he “was speechless, which doesn’t happen very much!” Barber said being on the other side of fundraisers was difficult. “I didn’t really want to do it because it’s hard for me to let my guard down, because I’m usually the one in charge or the one on the microphone organizing the show,” he said. “It was probably one of most amazing days of my life.” Barber said he has “a lot of treatment left” and likely will be out of work for at least a month down the road, but in the meantime, he’ll continue styling hair until he physically can’t. He said the money is now in a special trustee fund that is only for medical bills, and the funds raised will allow him to cover his out of pocket premiums for the rest of the year—Ideally, with some left over. “What we’re hoping is that I’m going to get better, I’m not going to need it all and we’ll pick somebody every year who is in need to keep the money rolling over,” he said. Starr said it was “beautiful” how the community rallied on Barber’s behalf. “It puts the belief back in your system that we are an amazing community here and we do amazing things together,” she said. | l |

If you are... then,

hired!

It’s time for Coco Montrese to begin a new chapter in her career. The Flamingo Resort cast member and Miss Gay America 2010 is moving to Las Vegas to pursue a dream job with Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas show at the Imperial Palace. Montrese planned to move by Jan. 31. “It’s surreal,” Montrese said while taking a break from packing. “This is a change in my life that I wanted and it’s always been a dream of mine to be a Vegas entertainer.” Montrese was first approached by Marino during a Miss Western States pageant—a preliminary to Miss Gay America—last year. There, Marino served as a judge and saw Montrese perform a Janet Jackson number. Afterward, the Vegas legend met with Montrese backstage. “He came back stage and the first thing he asked me was if I’d consider relocating to Las Vegas,” Montrese said. “My initial reaction was shock and it took me a few minutes to register what he said.” Since Montrese was still serving as Miss Gay America, she couldn’t immediately take Marino up on his offer. But the two remained in touch for nearly a year planning out the particulars. Now, Montrese and her partner will become Las Vegas residents and she should take her place as a permanent cast member of the show sometime in mid-February. Montrese will impersonate both Janet Jackson and Rihanna. “It will be a full time job,” Montrese laughed. “But I’ll still have duties as a former Miss Gay America. I’ve been invited back to a lot of places I traveled to during my reign and I’ll still be able to do that. But I am so excited to work with so many legends in the Divas Las Vegas cast. I’ve always been a fan.” Many of her fans have expressed that they will miss her in Florida, Montrese said, but that most have been supportive of the next major step in her career. She said she plans to return to Florida for big events—like Pride celebrations—but as of

Miss Gay America 2010 and Tampa Bay-area entertainer Coco Montrese will impersonate Janet Jackson and Rihanna in the Frank Marino Las Vegas show, “Divas Las Vegas.” | Photo courtesy Kristopher Reynolds

now she’s not exactly sure when she’ll be able to return. “This is an opportunity I can’t pass up,” Montrese said. “I don’t want to look back and say, ‘Oh, I wish I would have done that.’ Or even if it doesn’t work out and I’m there a year and I decide I want to do something else, at least I won’t have that, ‘I wish I had…’ thought on my mind.” The 37-year-old credits her transition to a Vegas entertainer to the Miss Gay America system and said she’ll never forget her roots in Florida. In fact, she hopes her Florida fans will make the trip to Vegas to see her perform. “I hope that if fans ever make it to Vegas that they come see me,” she said. “I would love to see them after the show and get a chance to say hello.” For more information on Divas Las Vegas, visit ImperialPalace.com. | l |

steve blanchard St. Petersburg | For years fans of male impersonation have followed the career of Andy Citino, who most know by his stage name, 6-Pak. But now, Citino and his wife, Sasha, are focused on helping others find their way to success on stage with their new store, 6S Boutique. “For so long we would have to look everywhere to pull an outfit or performance together,” Sasha said while sitting in the new store at 7213 Central Ave. “There’s a need for a shop where everything is in one place.” Both Citinos compare their new boutique to Ritzy Rags in Orlando and said they hope Tampa Bay’s performance community will take advantage of their new endeavor. “We plan to have it all,” Andy said. “Rhinestones, glue, tape, wigs, facial hair—everything someone would need for a performance.” And not just for drag performances. 6S Boutique hopes to get involved with the theater community as well as the drag and bar community by offering tools and items most non-performers take for granted. The new business has been in the works for more than a year and the couple debuted a few of their items at Sarasota Pride in October. “So far the response from the community has been incredible,” Andy said. “And we haven’t even opened the doors yet. The support has been amazing and I feel like we’re filling a need here.” In addition to providing the nuts and bolts required to create a performance outfit, 6S will offer custom rhinestoning services as well. Both Citinos have created jackets, hats and more and encourage those wanting more bling for the buck to stop in. “We can add rhinestones to things we have here or if someone has a pair of shoes or a shirt they want us to decorate, they can bring that in,” Sasha said. “Price depends on how many rhinestones they need and how detailed the project is.” Typically, 6S can finish projects within a week, but Andy added that time frames vary on a case-by-case basis. In addition to selling performance needs—including make up—6S Boutique is offering a special service to the area’s transgender and cross-dressing community. A back area of the store, complete with

Gill and partner officially adopt

wire report

Miami | The gay man whose battle in court led to the removal of Florida’s gay adoption ban is now officially a parent. According to a release by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Martin Gill and his partner participated in an adoption ceremony on Jan. 19 in Judge Cindy Lederman’s chambers at MiamiDade County Juvenile Court. The adoption ceremony marked the last step in the adoption process of two brothers who Gill and his brother fostered for six years. “We are thrilled that after so many years, we are officially a family in the eyes of the law,” said Gill. “All children deserve a permanent, loving home. This is a happy day.” Gill worked with the ACLU to challenge in court Florida’s 33-year ban on adoption by gay people. Lederman ruled the ban unconstitutional in 2008, and the 3rd District Court of Appeal upheld that decision last year. “Martin and his family were instrumental in ending one of the most discriminatory laws in the country,” said Leslie Cooper, staff attorney with the ACLU Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Project. “Hopefully now, thousands of children in Florida who are waiting to be adopted will be able to know the love and support of having a family.”

Howard Simon, executive director of the ACLU of Florida, said they’re “delighted” for Gill and his family. “The welfare of the children of Florida and their need to be part of a permanent family had been held hostage to anti-gay politics for far too long,” Simon said. “We wish Martin and his family all of the best, and we are thankful that the two brothers he has so lovingly cared for will have a permanent home and be part of a forever family.” Not everyone is thrilled with the new developments. House Speaker Dean Cannon wants Florida Governor Rick Scott to keep enforcing Florida’s ban on adoption by gay people, despite court rulings overturning that ban last year. In an interview with the Florida Baptist Witness, Cannon said he’s waiting to hear if Scott will continue to enforce the ban. If they don’t, Cannon said the Legislature should step in. “If we think we should, we’re certainly prepared and willing to do so,” he told the paper. LGBT activists raised concern about the state of the ban after Scott appointed David Wilkins, board member of Florida Baptist Children’s Homes, as the new DCF secretary on Jan. 19. | l |

Nelson advocating for ADAP help staff report Tallahassee | Senator Bill Nelson is making moves to rescue Florida’s ailing AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP), which has 2,700 people on a waiting list for life-saving medications. Nelson sent a letter to President Obama and Florida Gov. Rick Scott urging their immediate attention to the crisis. Nelson cited the programs current budget shortfall, noting that there would be a gap

in funding starting in February, till a new round of money comes through in April. “Such a lapse in treatment can lead to a number of life-threatening conditions for the thousands of HIV/AIDS patients in Florida who rely on ADAP medication to maintain their quality of life as they struggle with this debilitating disease,” Nelson wrote to Obama. Nelson’s letter to Scott marks the Senator’s first official communication with Florida’s new governor. | l |

Domestic Partnership Act introduced in the House staff report Tallahassee | A proposed bill would provide domestic partner benefits throughout Florida. State Representative Mark Pafford (D-West Palm Beach) filed The Domestic Partnerships Act (HB-337) Jan. 25 which would grant all couples in a domestic partnership the same rights and benefits available through marriage. Florida has 5.5 million people living

in communities that recognize domestic partnerships, either through registries or public employer benefits. That puts the state 8th in the nation. “At a time when many Florida families are facing difficult financial challenges, this bill will provide valuable protections, as well as responsibilities, to unmarried couples and will help more Floridians to take care of their loved ones,” said Pafford. | l |

Ugandan gay activist slain after photo published wire report Kampala, Uganda | Prominent Ugandan gay rights activist David Kato, whose picture was published by the anti-gay newspaper Rolling Stone next to the words “Hang Them,” was bludgeoned to death last week. Police claim his sexual orientation had nothing to do with the killing. Activists are outraged over the Kato’s death, an advocacy officer for the gay rights group Sexual Minorities Uganda. His slaying comes after a year of stepped up threats against gays in Uganda, where homosexuality is illegal and a controversial bill introduced in 2009 has proposed the death penalty for some homosexual acts. The bill prompted international condemnation and hasn’t come up for a vote. Kato, who had received multiple threats, was found with serious wounds to his

head caused by an attack with a hammer at his home on Jan. 26 in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. Kato later died on the way to the hospital. A police spokesman said Kato was killed by robbers and there was no indication the death was connected to any anti-homosexual sentiment. The introduction of the anti-homosexual bill in 2009 followed a conference in Kampala that was attended by American activists and religious leaders who consider same-gender relationships sinful. Some gay Ugandans still resent that American intervention. “David’s death is a result of the hatred planted in Uganda by U.S evangelicals in 2009,’’ said Val Kalende, a Ugandan gay rights activist. “The Ugandan government and the so-called U.S evangelicals must take responsibility for David’s blood.” | l |

Chick-Fil-A’s anti-gay stance sparks protest wire report

l

al

Atlanta, Ga. | A fried chicken chain run by a devout Christian family has been branded homophobic for backing a group which campaigns against gay marriage. Chick-Fil-A, which says its corporate purpose is to “glorify God,” was savaged when it emerged one branch was providing food for the anti-gay Pennsylvania Family Institute. Blogs immediately lit up with criticism with calls for a nationwide boycott. The row exploded after the New York Times revealed that Chick-Fil-A sandwiches would be used to feed those attending a seminar called ‘The Art Of Marriage: Getting To The Heart Of God’s Design’ in Harrisburg, Pa. The same piece pointed out that the firm had given away CDs of a Bible-themed radio show with kids meals, which was produced

by the Christian organization Focus On The Family, which is against gay marriage. Within hours an online petition asking Chick-Fil-A to stop supporting such groups had 25,000 signatures. Chick-Fil-A later backed down and said it was dropping its support of any such groups. The company’s president Dan Cathy said in a statement: “Chick-Fil-A’s corporate purpose is ‘To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us, and to have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-Fil-A.’ “As a result, we will not champion any political agendas on marriage and family. This decision has been made, and we understand the importance of it.’” He did however add that the company would “continue to offer resources to strengthen marriages and families.” | l |

Illinois gov. signs historic civil unions legislation wire report

1-800-MORGAN LAW { 8 0 0 - 6 6 7 - 4 2 6 5 } { 4 0 7 - 4 2 0 - 1 4 1 4 }

OFFICES ORLANDO

Chicago, Ill. | Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a bill legalizing civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. Hundreds of supporters crowded into the Chicago Cultural Center Feb. 1 to watch the historic bill-signing. The measure gives gay and lesbian couples official recognition from the state and many of the rights that accompany traditional marriage. That includes the power to decide medical treatment for an ailing partner and the right to inherit a partner’s property. Quinn has repeatedly said the new law will help the Illinois economy by making the state more hospitable to businesses and

convention organizers looking for a place to spend their dollars. “I think they look for a state that is a welcoming, accepting, hospitable place and that’s what we are in Illinois. We have everybody in and nobody left out,” Quinn said in January. Supporters presented the civil unions legislation as a matter of basic fairness for all Illinois residents, but opponents argued that it moves Illinois closer to legalizing same-sex marriages and could impose unwanted requirements on religious institutions and their programs. The law will take effect on June 1. Illinois law will continue to define marriage as between one man and one woman. | l |

Phone calls may be hours instead of minutes, sleep requirements may change, eating patterns may alter, and then there are the cards. Ever notice that the number of cards given in the first two years of a relationship are oftentimes much higher than in the years to follow? What is it about love that stimulates us emotionally and physically and why does ths change over time? We live in a time when ending relationships Abundant is common place. Do we really need a tracking system to know our community moves through relationships in similar fashion? What are the characteristics necessary to sustain love, passion and intimacy as two people grow into lifetime dreams together? This is a question I often ask couples as they prepare to exchange vows in a commitment ceremony. The responses vary, but usually include answers like respect, integrity, honesty, communication, trust, and loyalty. It is the exception—not the rule—that this question had been the source of conversation prior to our meeting. Most people are not disappointed by what is asked and not received, but by what is expected and not spoken. We often times offer what we hope to receive and then are disappointed when we don’t get it back. Why are relationships so complicated? We are a matrix of DNA, societal and familial systems, and individual characteristic yielding a complex human being. None of us are the same. for each of us what that means. Love is just not enough for a lifetime of loving. It is merely the by-product of defining and living into those characteristics that we then weave into the fabric of our relationships. As you continue your path of life and love, take a few moments and think about what you require to sustain the love you share with others and ask of them the same thing. In communicating these values you will be laying the foundation of a shared understanding of love and thereby removing at least some of the assumed and unspoken expectations that if unmet may impact what is possible. | l | Rev. “Relationships are hard work. Not to mention, the work it takes to honestly acknowledge someone else’s true agenda, regardless of how you feel for them or what they say to you, is something we all struggle with—gay and straight. I know during the course of my last ‘growth opportunity’ and the months of therapy following it, one of the most valuable lessons I learned is just because you are willing to be honest, walk the talk and do the work on yourself and the relationship you are in does not automatically equate into your loved one being willing or even able to do the same hard work.”

mail Meeting the Music Man It was so nice to see a profile on Eric Overstreet in your Winter Arts Guide (Issue 18.02). I’ve gone to the Flamingo fairly regularly since it reintroduced the T-Dance to Tampa Bay and honestly must admit that I never gave much thought to the music pumped into the courtyard. But after reading about DJ O and his career, it made me realize that there really is a man behind the music. Thanks for introducing us to the man that keeps the party going every weekend.

Republicans take issue with one particular phrase that Obama uttered many times in his State of the Union address: “Invest in America.” Republicans regard this as code language for higher taxes and more government spending. This feeling is deeply rooted. When the Obama administration rescued Chrysler in 2009, Republican leaders blasted the move, and said that Chrysler would fail anyway. BANKRUPTCY

New Year…New You…NO DEBT! IF YOU ARE LIKE a majority of people, getting your finances in order was probably on your list of New Year’s Resolutions. Don’t let this be one of those Resolutions that you let slip by when it actually is relatively simple to give yourself a blank slate. In 2010, 1.53 million people filed for personal bankruptcy nationwide. Therefore, please know that when it comes to having financial difficulties, you are not alone. People from all walks of life are being affected by this unprecedented economic climate: people in their 20s just out of school who cannot find a job, retired people who just cannot seem to make ends meet with just their social security, doctors, lawyers and anyone who is in any way connected to the real estate industry. For decades the word “bankruptcy” brought to mind horrible stigmas and garnered gossip whispers from friends and co-workers. However, today, with everything that is going on, bankruptcy is an invaluable tool towards the preverbal fresh start. Therefore, at the risk of offending William Shakespeare, the question is to file or not to file? In true lawyer fashion, the answer is: it depends. While bankruptcy is the right course to take for many people, it is definitely not the across the board right answer for everyone. You need to start off by asking yourself 3 potentially painful questions: • What is my current financial situation? • What do I expect will be my future financial situation? • How much (and what type) of debt do I have? The one question you should NOT ask yourself is “What will people think?” These people’s opinions are not helping

To discuss your options, contact Ana DeVilliers at BANKRUPTCY LAW GROUP

Ana V. De Villiers, Esq. you pay your mortgage or helping you figure out how to cover the minimum payments on your credit cards. At the end of the day, the only person who can take care of you…is you. Once you have answered the 3 questions above for yourself, here are some basic things about bankruptcy in general that you should know. There are 2 main types of bankruptcy: Chapter 7 and Chapter 13. Chapter 7 is the type of bankruptcy that likely comes to mind when you think of bankruptcy. This is the complete discharge of a significant portion of your debt, while keeping most if not all of your possessions; because living in Florida provides us with very generous asset exemptions that are not available to those people who live in other states. Chapter 13 differs from Chapter 7 in that the discharge of your debt is contingent on the person filing bankruptcy completing a 36–60 month payment plan to the bankruptcy court. This begs the obvious question of “why would I choose to pay anything back when I don’t have to make any payments under Chapter 7”? Even though Chapter 13 involves making some sort of payments, it is actually the better option for 2 types of people: people whose income keeps them from qualifying for Chapter 7 and people who have something that they need to save. Obviously, there is a lot more to figuring out which kind of bankruptcy would best benefit you, therefore take the time to talk to a bankruptcy lawyer to see if the decision to file or not to file is the best one for you.

In the second case, I concluded that it was a mistake to publish the names of those arrested. They were unimportant to the story and to any consideration of the issues raised. The names have been removed from the story in our archive. In this case, unlike other arrests, the crime and punishment are both born of shame. As an LGBT newspaper, we should not be complicit. The third case is the most complex. One friend observed that Watermark’s responsibility may be to report what happens truthfully, but its mission is to nurture the LGBT community and the people and businesses that comprise it. It’s a difficult balancing act. Truth is important to nurturance, and feedback is essential to both. But on this side of the computer screen, it’s sometimes easy to forget how we would feel if someone attacked our friends, family or business unfairly and without attribution. In the future, our editorial staff will consider comments—especially anonymous ones being considered for publication in the newspaper—more carefully. Erectile dysfunction got you down?

NOW THERE IS HOPE! Orlando based, Olympia Compounding Pharmacy is now offering powerful and reliable medication for erectile dysfunction. Let’s face it, no matter what your age, size, shape or sexual orientation, at some point most men have experienced erectile dysfunction. WHY DOES IT HAPPEN? There are many factors that can contribute to the onset and progression of erectile dysfunction. Prostate surgery, diabetes, low testosterone, poor circulation or side effects from other medications can all cause and worsen ED. PILLS NOT DELIVERING RESULTS? If you have tried to address your ED in the past, you have probably tried the “little blue pill” or other, similar pills. Unfortunately, these medications do not always work for everyone. Sometimes, due to medical conditions, you can not even safely take pills. And over 60% of the men who do take pills, have experienced uncomfortable side effects like headache, upset stomach, blurred version, etc. Olympia’s custom blend of FDA approved medications deliver fast, reliable results with none of the above side effects and its effectiveness is not compromised by food or alcohol.

WHAT KIND OF RESULTS CAN I EXPECT? The custom medication provided by Olympia delivers results in over 96% of patients with the very first dose. In fact, Olympia supplies many of the major ED clinics around the country with the same medications. Now through Olympia’s own network of physicians, or even your own primary care physician, you can be evaluated and prescribed this special blend of medication. Because Olympia is the compounder of the medication, you won’t pay inflated prices. In fact, their medication is a fraction of the cost of other ED treatments.

ETERNAL ENTERTAINER

SHIRLEY MACLAINE BRINGS HER LEGENDARY LIFE TO THE SARASOTA STAGE | erik caban

A

dancer, singer, highly regarded actress and metaphysical time traveler, Shirley MacLaine is certainly among Hollywood’s most unique stars. She first captured her LGBT following in 1961’s The Children’s Hour, where she played a teacher who develops feelings for by Audrey Hepburn. Since then she has appeared on stage and in huge film roles bringing more LGBT attention to her—namely with the help of her portrayal of the feisty “Ouiser” in 1989’s Steel Magnolias. Acting, dancing and singing have never been enough for MacLaine. She has made a documentary film on China, traveled the Camino, authored ten books and has been a longtime advocate for civil rights, liberties and New Age beliefs. The Oscar-winning actress, still feisty at 76, is on a natural high, fueled by her belief in herself and an appetite for life (and past lives). The seducer of Charlemagne, the conqueror of Western Europe, in a former incarnation says that this time around she has yet to fall in love but on her spiritual journey, she’s learning to love herself. MacLaine brings her more than 50 years in show business to The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Thursday, Feb. 10, in a kaleidoscope of memorable film moments with private revelations about her extraordinary life, career and spiritual journey. WATERMARK: What can we expect from your upcoming show? SHIRLEY MACLAINE: I think you’re going to really like it. This is one that I’ve thought about doing for a long time. I don’t work with a band or singers or dancers. I like working spontaneously with the audience. So, what I’m doing is showing a huge retrospective of my life. Not just movies—everything, the singing and the dancing and the comedy. It’s quite good. I’ll have a remote control and at points I stop and explain what really happened in that scene or photo on the screen: What was that political dictator really like? What were Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin really like? All the behind the scenes stuff. Towards the end [of the show], I get into a big question and answer period. The audience should have their questions ready. They can ask anything they want about anything. Continued on page 32 | uu |

n a day of reality-show instant celebrities, only a select few know the exhilarating feat of being plucked out of anonymity and thrown into the proverbial fishbowl of super-stardom. Clay Aiken was a fan favorite during the sophomore season of American Idol, where he finished second to Ruben Studdard. Eight years later, despite rumors and set-backs, Aiken’s grit, determination and raw talent have proven why he’s a household name. While Aiken may have acquiesced to a few minor alterations, he has stayed true to himself and his passion, using his celebrity as a platform to raise awareness for gay rights, AIDS and children with disabilities. Just a few weeks out from a major U.S. tour that brings him to Orlando’s Hard Rock Live on Feb. 11 and Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Feb. 12, the 32-yearold North Carolina native talks about coming out, fatherhood, Broadway and Richard Chamberlin.

WATERMARK: You’ve toured with Ruben Studdard among others. Do you think you prefer touring solo or as an ensemble? CLAY AIKEN: There are benefits to both. I like touring solo because I get to make all the decisions. [Laughs] But there is something nice about touring with someone else, not only because there’s that camaraderie. There’s someone you get to bounce jokes off of and you get to play on stage with someone else. I like being part of a team—I like being a valuable part of a team. With that said, I like singing my own songs. I like doing my own shows. So, it’s kind of six of one, a half dozen of the other. What can we expect from this solo show? You can expect I’ll be in charge. [Laughs] This show is going to be relatively laid back compared to some of the other shows that I’ve done. All of the music is love songs from

the 50s and 60s. It will be a little more low key than say “Invincible” or some of the stuff I’ve done with Reuben. It’ll be a sit-downand-enjoy-the-music kind of atmosphere; perfect for Valentine’s Day. My goal for this show is to keep it as intimate and laid-back as possible. I want to have time to talk with the audience and have conversations with some of the people in the crowd.

roadway legend and Tony Award winner Faith Prince has put on her dancing shoes for the second national tour of Sir Elton John’s musical Billy Elliot. In the wildly popular and critically acclaimed show, Prince portrays Mrs. Wilkinson, a dance teacher in a small northern English town in the middle of the 1985 coal miners’ strike. Billy, the son of one of the striking workers, is a young teen with a gift for dance. Prince’s character secretly trains and encourages Billy, even though they both know his hardscrabble family will be violently unsupportive. “It’s just a story that touches people’s hearts, especially the men in the audience

I was attracted to it before I knew what it was. I was in a talent show in first grade and read a poem about a Raggedy Ann doll. Later, I went with a friend to an audition of The King and I. I was just there for moral support, and she said, “Why don’t you audition?” I said I didn’t know any songs, so they had me sing “Happy Birthday.” I sang it with a lot of feeling, I got the part, and my friend didn’t speak to me for three weeks. I remember the smell of the theater, though, and I recognized it as something I loved.

his remake may be energetic and elaborate, but it also staunchly steers away from complex characterization. Humanity gets thrown out the window and gratuitous sex and gore fuel this well-oiled but heartless espionage thriller. Statham is good at what he does. He’s a cold but lonely killing machine. His one possible friend is an underworld boss, Sutherland. However, the call comes down from Statham’s other boss (Goldwyn) that Sutherland needs taken out for doubledealing. Statham is a professional, but the grief from the job motivates him to adopt Sutherland’s dangerous prodigal son, Foster, as a protégé. This new duo takes on several other intricate assignments, Statham

training Foster to epic proportions in mere weeks. The film aims low and hits its mark well. The many convolutions are tight and unexpected, and the undercover bits are entertaining. The error is that the violent, soulless characters never inspire much more than a rudimentary fascination. Logic also leaves; apparently this is a world with no police whatsoever, and two people can scale a Chicago building in broad daylight without being seen. Statham is a pro at this genre (The Transporter films, the Crank films). However, The Mechanic makes a point of showing that his life is hollow. Just when it seems our assassin is starting to care about something, the filmmakers switch gears, deciding this vehicle needs less emotion and more well rendered carnage, sex and explosions.

| uu | Shirley MacLaine from p.25

I don’t care if it’s about Jack Nicholson or reincarnation. I’m there. So, it’ll be a different show in every city.

I think she seems cool but at the same time, I don’t want to listen to anybody who shoots animals from airplanes.

What would you attribute your large gay fan base to? Basically, I tell the truth. No matter how outrageous it is. Why do you think that gay men are drawn to strong female archetypes, like yourself? I think the gay sensibility wants the truth told. Let me ask you, how do you feel about Sarah Palin? [Laughs] Um, The Devil? [Laughs] Ok, there you go. She’s strong. She’s saying what she thinks. I think she seems cool but at the same time, I don’t want to listen to anybody who shoots animals from airplanes. I know you’ve played countless roles in over 50 films but were there any that you particularly related to? All of them. But my favorite character was Aurora Greenway from Terms of Endearment. And of course, I’m going to tell [the audience] lots of stories about that. Do your spiritual beliefs play a part in what roles/movies you take?

—Shirley Maclaine on Sarah Palin

Not really, no. I mean, all of the parts that I’m interested in are the people trying to know one another. I know that’s a spiritual impulse anyway. Meaning you pursue roles that feel right to you? No. I like trying to figure out a character: Why do they do what they do? Why don’t they do what they should do? All that stuff. I’d say

BeYour OwnBoss in2011! artistic School of Nails & Cosmetology, inc.

those are very spiritual questions. You used to be very involved in the feminist movement. Are there any charities or organizations you are currently passionate about? I am mostly involved with how to further the interests in the Spiritual Sciences. The feminist movement finds the spiritual stuff ridiculous. A lot of the very intellectual movement finds the spiritual stuff threatening. I read that you once said, “It is useless to hold a person to anything he says while he’s in love, drunk, or running for office.” I can understand the drunk or running for office part but why the love part? [Laughs] That’s a pretty good quote. I didn’t remember I said that. I think that people often change their minds once love has passed. You talk a lot about love and healthy relationships on your website. Absolutely. I think that’s what we need more of in the world, obviously. I think it’s something that people don’t understand. Neither do I, honestly. We’re all searching for it. But what does it really mean?

Do you believe that we’re meant to be with one other person for the rest of our lives? Oh, Lord. No. Kinsey did research on something like 15,000 people and they came up with statistics in which human beings fit into three categories—monogamist, serial monogamist and promiscuous. So, I guess it depends on which category you think you fit in. I’m a serial monogamist.

You’ve had an array of suitors over the years. What’s your type? I read you like them younger so they can keep up with you. Well, no. That’s not necessarily true. ‘What is my type?’ I don’t know. They have to be funny and big. Taller than me and big.

Any tips you can offer to help couples maintain a happy and vital connection? I would say, listen and have a true interest—not a feigned but a true interest in each other. See how that fits with your interests. I was reading somewhere that it’s a good notion to go out with your significant other and don’t talk about work, children or your daily life. There are so many other things to discuss and have fun with. Yet, that’s what dissipates when you have a life full of other things inside that life. When you’re first starting a relationship, you talk about the world and life itself as you view it, not just your own little circumstance. Continue that interest into the relationship. Over the past decade or so, meditation, yoga and a longing and/or need to investigate our inner selves seems to be much more pronounced. What do you attribute that to? I think that because of what’s going on in the world, people are realizing there must be other solutions besides religion, money, politics, competition, sex and all that. People are looking within themselves to find answers. What would you recommend to someone who is searching for enlightenment or spiritual revelation? Shirleymaclaine.com. I think my website is very good for teaching. It’s advantageous to someone looking for that kind of info. You once mentioned that people we have an immediate connection or reaction to are people that we have more than likely met before in a former life. Why do you think we continue to meet them lifetime after lifetime? They say there are 12 souls that we’re always involved with on our journey through time. Sometimes men, sometimes women, sometimes brothers, sometimes sisters, sometimes lovers. And through those twelve, we learn about ourselves. I don’t know if that’s real but it makes sense to me. [For example,] I think we chose the members of our family. We must’ve had some sort of close relationship with them before. What do you have planned after this tour? I think I’m going to enjoy this [show] and evenings with myself. So, I might be doing this and developing it into quite a tour! I’m waiting for a couple of pictures to come together but as you know, Hollywood’s in big trouble right now. We’ll see what happens. | l |

Probably most impressive were the on-air interviews conducted by Stephanie Shippae and Amy DeMilo, who spoke with entertainers who arrived in the parking lot via limo. Bits of the interviews were broadcast directly onto Logo. After she greeted fans from the stage, Alexis settled in with everyone else to watch the premiere.

It was practically a sell-out night at the Honey Pot in Ybor for reality star Tabitha Coffey. The star of Bravo’s Tabitha’s Salon Takover stopped in to judge the Miss U.S. of A Florida pageant and stuck around for a book signing as well. The beautiful and gracious lesbian reality star was more than happy to mingle with fans, pose for pictures and talk with the media. She told Watermark’s Erik Caban that her perfectly styled look is all her own doing and that she doesn’t have a team of assistants to get her prepped for public appearances. She also talked freely about her decade-long relationship with her partner and her matter-of-fact attitude she displays on the show. By the time the evening ended, people were wondering if there was an available copy of her memoir anywhere left in Ybor City!

In the historic and intimate Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, Linda Eder performed to a packed house that was at least a quarter filled with gay men who wanted to hear the Broadway voice that was launched on Star Search. Her legions of gay fans were not disappointed as she performed some of her classics, “Someone Like You and selections from her new album, Now, which is available March 1. The new album is collaboration with her ex, Frank Wildhorn, with whom the singer says she’s on good terms. “But I made him work to get the sound right, she told the crowd. “I can afford to be choosy. I’m not the little wifey anymore.

orlando overheard How to Succeed Maitland Middle and Winter Park High alum Michael Jackowitz is bracing for a big year. He’s executive producer of two of the most anticipated theatrical events in New York City this spring. The revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) previews on Broadway later this month. Séance on a Wet Afternoon is a new opera by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell, Pippin) that will run at NYC Opera at Lincoln Center for just two weeks in April. Michael’s parents, Syd and Enid, are active in the Orlando chapter of PFLAG and other LGBT-supportive organizations. Enid’s recently published book, The Rest of the Way: A Coming Out Story for Parents and Gay Children, is about her personal growth as the result of Michael’s coming out. Michael and his partner, Shawn, live in New York City.

More Gay Theatre News Mark Baratelli is receiving rave reviews in the Winter Park Playhouse production of Five Course Love. The Orlando Sentinel’s Matthew Palm said, “Baratelli has that appealing desperate air of a clown, whether as an Italian waiter or a German realizing his dominatrix girlfriend and his secret boyfriend have arrived simultaneously at his restaurant.” Five Course Love runs through Feb. 13.

And the pre-Fringe gay buzz is growing. The Sentinel’s Commander Coconut called Miss Sammy Bakes a Cake his favorite play title ever. As impromptu as a morning talk show, the production promises numerous guest stars that will be spotlighted alongside, you guessed it, Miss Sammy. Margaret Nolan produces. And opportunistic local theatre-types are already salivating over roles in the Oops Guys’ Bitches of the Kingdom. March 15 auditions at Mad Cow Theatre will be a hoot. We’re volunteering to sit in the audience.

Virtual Reality Have you wondered what’s to become of the former Urban Think bookstore on Central Ave. in Thornton Park? The Metropolitan Business Association (MBA) wants to open an LGBT visitor center. And they’ve come up with a hot idea for the rest of the space: virtual offices. Budding businesses could have an address, phone number, office services and conference facilities for less than $100/month. MBA is compiling the names of interested parties. Contact mikael@ mbaorlando.org. Blogger and longtime Watermark contributor Jim Crescitelli held down the fort at Urban Think for years. He’s contributed a short story to the recently published Fragmentation & Other Stories, and he’ll read a selection at the 625 E. Central location on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m.

that I want For many LGBTs, Love and monoGamous sex Go hand-in-hand | greg stemm

O

ne would think the concept of monogamy would be simple. Just have sex with one—and only one—person. Perhaps it’s sex with a longterm partner, between two people regularly dating or even a monogamous, purely sexual relationship otherwise know as friends with benefits. But for many, monogamy is about much more than sex. Emotional issues, spirituality, commitment, and a range of other factors figure into whether people want a monogamous relationship or if they need to reevaluate the relationship they’re already in. Finding a monogamous relationship can be tricky and involves more than just a physical attraction. Several people asked about monogamy for this article say sex is just one part of a monogamous relationship. For some, love and monogamy can both be found online. Robin Hankins, 51, is the producer of the LGBT web-based TV show As I Am. While she has had two long-term monogamous relationships in the past, she is currently single. “Sex for me isn’t a single solitary action,” Hankins says. “All the elements have to come together—the emotional and spiritual sides both play big roles too. Sex for me is a concert of things that turn me on, not just a single instrument.” Hankins‘ two previous monogamous relationships were for seven and 14 years. She says she would very much like to be in another

one. “For me, when I’m in a monogamous relationship, it’s all about the intimacy and companionship,” Hankins says. Hankins dates, but she admits that she has been less than successful in finding what she has been looking for. “Honestly, I’ve been on four or five dates since I’ve been single this time and they were all awful,” she says. “One woman brought her child to every single date we went on. Another just seemed to be angry at everything.” Despite the setbacks, she is hopeful that she’ll find companionship. One challenge Hankins faces is her status in the community. Thanks to her program and several other high-profile positions, she is very visible in Tampa Bay’s LGBT community. “I went out with one woman who said she was out, but when I asked her if she was out at work her reaction was ,‘Oh my! No, not at work.’” Since a person’s sexuality isn’t protected in Florida, a person can be fired simply for who they are. Hankins understands the fear accompanying that but for her, the perfect companion would be someone who is out and comfortable with herself. “You can’t avoid my high visibility in the gay community,” Hankins says. “Its part of who I am and whomever I’m involved with is going to have to feel comfortable with that.” Continued on page 48 | uu |

a minute with...

Phil Henricks Head Of NOrtH americaN market, Gaydar.Net

T

echnology has transformed the way we date. In a recent survey of college-aged adults, nearly 70% said they met potential love interests using technology. Some say the statistics are even higher for the LGBT community. No one knows the ins and outs of online courtship quite like Phil Henricks. The 41-year-old is the head of the North American Market for Gaydar.net, one of the world’s largest personals sites. In that role, he handles the marketing and promotion of Gaydar.net in North America. The handsome (and single) Henricks took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for us concerning revolutions in the online dating world, how to successfully navigate profiles and what the do’s and don’ts are for finding that special someone on the information super highway. WATERMARK: You are a handsome guy—do you use online resources in your search for your special someone? PHIL HENRICKS: Thank you! I do date

online. In fact, I have memberships on several sites. I, like many of my friends, have met some of my closest friends, best “dates” and a few exes all online. I honestly believe you can meet that special person anywhere: the gym, supermarket, coffee shop, online. How honest are guys in their online profiles?

I think most guys are pretty honest in their profiles and don’t try to be deceptive. Internet dating has been around for more than 10 years. We have Facebook. We’re comfortable—sometimes too much so—with sharing many aspects of our personal lives. At this point, I’d say chances are most profiles are indeed genuine. Realistically, if the goal is to actually meet someone in person, what’s the point of getting cute with the profile? Be yourself, already! Can people really find true love online?

Absolutely! We are surrounded by couples that have met online. The internet is a great way for guys to meet, so they can date, get to know each other and maybe even fall in love. And it’s a godsend for guys who are too busy or live in remote areas, as they now have a shot at meeting their true love, in ways they never could before online dating. But once you’ve met that nice guy, it’s all about downshifting from the instant gratification of the internet to the real-time work and patience of dating. Love takes work, but at least with sites like Gaydar, the odds are stacked in your favor. It might take a bit longer, but as Mae West wisely said, “a good man is hard to find.”

What are the differences between a profile looking for “love” and looking for “sex?”

Remember, when you sign up, your profile is blank. It’s up to you to take a minute and tailor your profile to your mission. Be honest and descriptive in your profile. Be clear about what you’re looking for. Avoid sending mixed signals. You might be surprised how many others are looking for the same exact thing. If you’re seriously looking for a LTR you might want to start with an appropriate screen name. I mean, come on guys, “ChokeOnThis” doesn’t exactly invoke invitations to a long walks on the beach. Nor do photos of yourself spread-eagle with chaser lights. Conversely, you’re looking for a little NSA action, then “LTRorDeath” and a photo of you in front of the entire Eiffel Tower isn’t going to cut it. Come out swinging, so to speak, and let them know what’s on your agenda. Men are very visual creatures— animals, really. So, the more pictures the better. How can singles avoid falling for a guy a continent away?

That’s a trap that a lot of guys fall into. A guy in Oklahoma City falls finds the man of his dreams in Tasmania. There are a lot of lonely guys online and the sure way to feel lonelier is to flirt with guys you have no shot in hell of meeting. Be a “localvore,” to borrow a term from the foodies. State in your profile that you’re only interested in hearing from local guys and limit your searches to a manageable travel radius. How can our lesbian readers find online love?

They can join GaydarGirls.com. Though not as heavily marketed as Gaydar.net—girls tend to prefer meeting through friends, at girl bars, Dinah Shore Weekend—we do indeed have a lesbian dating site. It’s smaller, but

busy, and surprisingly just as frisky! What profile no-nos have you seen first hand?

up when meeting a stranger for the first time. If you’re gut still says no, then skip it and block the freak!

I see a lot of profiles, from hilarious, laugh-out-loud ones to elaborate photo shoots, to jaw-dropping close-ups. I’ll say this: Note to married men, using your wedding photo might not be a good idea. It’s happened, believe me.

Do you believe there is someone out there for everybody?

What do you say to people who hear online horror stories form friends?

We just launched the Gaydar App for the iPhone, which uses GPS. The app was an immediate hit. We were the first major gay dating site to offer a fully integrated app, allowing app and web users the exact same access to its profiles and options. We see this integration of devices and access as the future. The Android Gaydar App should be ready shortly after Valentine’s Day! | l |

Look, the online world is only a reflection of the real world. Use common sense. Listen to your gut—or your mother. Take a minute, get a phone number, address, and talk on the phone, even. Get enough information to be relaxed about meeting the guy. Meet in public. (It’s called a date!) And, if you go, it is always a good idea to give a friend a heads-

Yes.

A lot of sites are going the GPS route for smartphones. Is that the future of online dating?

rlando | Have you ever been involved with someone—for months or even years—before discovering who they really are? If so, did you ever stop to think about your investment in time, money and emotions? Or how great it would be if you could somehow bypass all that pain and accelerate the process of finding happiness with a suitable mate? “What we try to accomplish at Prestige International Connections is to eliminate many of those heartaches,” says Roland Kilburn, a life coach and director at the Winter Parkbased business.

Prestige matches compatible straight and gay singles around the world. Part dating service, part image consultant and part counselor, the groundbreaking company uses a comprehensive evaluation process to help people find compatible partners, healthy relationships and that holiest of grails… love. Why a matchmaker? The logic behind Prestige is simple: most of us spend lots of time and money on things like education, career, home, fitness and personal appearance. Prestige operates under

the principal that in order to find and hold onto love, you have to be willing to make a similar investment. Few of us think of dating in those terms. Kilburn says it’s no wonder so many of us feel both lonely and out of balance. He calculates that when you add up dinner, drinks and an evening at the movies or the theater, the average date costs between $100150. Weekend getaways, special occasions and gifts are often much more. Those who date an average of just once a week could easily spend more then $10,000 in a year. And this doesn’t account for all the time—and hope—expended while you learn about your potential lover. “Our memberships cost far less than that,” says Kilburn. “It’s surprisingly feasible, and it makes sense for many people.” Initial consultations are free, he notes, and the price for membership varies based on the wishes of the client and the services provided by Prestige.

life coach, Prestige offers meetings with an image consultant that will focus on appearance and self-confidence. Clients are encouraged to be honest about their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. Importantly, they must consider whether they are ready to be in a committed relationship. From there, according to Kilburn, Prestige relies on technology, experience and a big dollop of intuition to match people. “Just because you’ve checked the same boxes on a survey as someone else doesn’t mean you will connect on a deep level,” he says. “As life coaches, my team and I take the guessing out of whether or not the date will be successful.”

Taking the plunge Prestige members then begin what Kilburn calls “the discovery process,” involving introductions with several hand-picked potential matches. The unexpected result: with each date, and with feedback from a life coach, Know thy self clients learn as much about themselves as they But first you have to be clear not only about do about their date. Monogamy and emotional security Mark Epstein, 62, is the Community Advisor for Suncoast Hospice. He says monogamy is whole lot more about emotional security than sexual fidelity. For him it’s about feeling like there is someone who cares about him as much as he cares about them. Interestingly, he doesn’t equate monogamy with co-habitation. In fact, he would prefer to continue to live alone even if he did find a monogamous relationship. “I’d like to have the bottom drawer of someone’s dresser where I could keep a few things if I stayed over. I’d be glad to clean out a bottom drawer at my house for my partner,” he says. “But honestly, I’m a very private person and I need my own personal space. I’m not sure living with someone would be for me.” A monogamous relationship is based in friendship, for Epstein “What I’m really looking for in a monogamous relationship is a best friend who I happen to have sex with, too” he says. Values are important to Epstein as well when searching for that love connection. But some differences of opinion are okay. “I might not share my partner’s views on abortion, but we’d have to share some values about the commitment we would be expressing in this relationship,” he says. Avoiding sexually transmitted diseases is obviously a benefit of monogamy, but for Epstein, who is negative, a person’s HIV status is not nearly as important as the other elements of the relationship. “Before I am comfortable having sex with someone I have to be attracted to them as a whole person, not just one part,” he says. “Sex for me is multidimensional. It’s about mental things, spirituality, commitment, and of course a strong physical attraction. I want to share a relationship with someone who is as compelled as I am to show respect to their partner.” Finding love online As technology invades our lives more and more each day, many search online profiles for

love. But is it possible to find a monogamous relationship online in today’s freewheeling no holds barred sexually charged internet hookups? It can be a challenge. Yet, both men and women do seem to find this kind of relationship from their keyboards. Chrissy Swanson, 30 and her girlfriend, 39, have been in a monogamous relationship for seven months. They live together in a rented house in St. Petersburg. The two met on the website “Plenty of Fish” and exchanged emails on the site for about 10 days before they switched to their personal email accounts. Swanson’s girlfriend was living in Pompano Beach at the time and Swanson was in Tampa. While they had a long talk the first time they met, they admit that sex immediately followed. They have been monogamous ever since. Swanson has been in two previous monogamous relationships, one that lasted a few months, the other for three years. “I wouldn’t consider anything else,” she says. “If you know what it feels like for someone to cheat on you then you can understand the benefits of real monogamy.” Nick Capezza, 40, met the man he is dating on Facebook. They both had mutual friends and discovered they had mutual interests on their profiles. Capezza says he only has sex with the man he is dating. He’s had two former monogamous relationships, one for five years and the other for 13. “For me monogamy is about honesty and trust with your partner,” says Capezza. “Since I am concerned about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, I have to trust that my partner is going to be monogamous as well.” Capezza says he and his partner were tested for HIV together. “I think a lot of the wild online sex means that people compromise what they are looking for,” says Capezza. “When you are doing the whole online thing, you need to be your own parent. I do think the internet has revolutionized the way gay men meet each other. Before it there were really just the bars. Now you can have a whole range of experiences just sitting in front of you computer. “I was lucky in that I found what I was looking for that way.” | l |

ESPN Magazine takes on lesbian homophobia in basketball wire report In the January edition of ESPN the Magazine, journalists Luke Cyphers and Kate Fagan take a close look at homophobia in women’s basketball—specifically concerning the program at Iowa State. The article discusses “negative recruiting,” a practice of assuring parents that “family values” are prevalent on a team. Many see such labels as anti-gay, especially when it comes to women’s sports. In the story, a former player, who is not identified, talks about Iowa State’s Bill Fennelly, who “ kept drilling that ‘this would be a family.” says the player, who added he told her, “You should come here because we’re family-oriented.” The article reads: To the recruit, those seemingly comforting words cloaked a deeper meaning. Two of the four schools she was considering were purported to employ lesbians on their staffs. Her stop in Ames, in fact, was on the heels of a trip to one of those allegedly 'gay programs.' There, coaches avoided discussing anyone’s

off-court lives. Iowa State, in contrast, pushed the personal hard. 'They threw it out constantly,' says the player, who became a Cyclone. ‘Iowa has morals, and people who live here have values, wholesome values.’ The implication, to her and to another former Cyclone who confirmed her account, was that at other schools, there’s something going on you don’t know. The article also quotes Fennelly, who says he and his staff are being penalized because “they’re married and have families.” The coach, one of the few in the women’s game willing to speak on the record about the subject, denies that he or any of his staff has ever used the term “wholesome” to recruit a player. But, Fennelly adds, “if using the word ‘family’ is viewed as negative recruiting, then we’re guilty, because we say that. I don’t think it’s negative. Maybe I’m the only one in America who thinks that’s ridiculous to say.” The article dealing with homophobia in women’s college basketball is in the issue of ESPN The Magazine on shelves now. | l |

Belmont changes policy after gay coach protest wire report Nashville, Tenn. | Belmont University President Bob Fisher announced that the board of trustees has added sexual orientation to its non-discrimination policy. The private university drew national attention in December after students protested what they said was the ouster of a soccer coach, Lisa Howe, who came out as a lesbian to her team. During a news conference, Fisher would

not answer questions regarding Lisa Howe. The university has called her departure on Dec. 2 a “mutual decision,” but students and players have said Howe was let go because she told them she was having a child with her same-sex partner. Fisher said at the time that the university does not discriminate based on sexual orientation and said the policy change is just an affirmation of the practice already in place. | l |

f reports are to be believed, Florida was the only state in the union not to have any snow earlier this month. But things were plenty warm the week before Miss America hit the Vegas Strip when the Adult Video Awards were there. And who should pop up but Andy Dick. Wait—Andy Dick? At the straight porn awards? From what we hear, Andy was actually making a nuisance of himself with one of the ladies, of all things! According to our sources, he went backstage prior to the show’s start and found himself in a dressing room with “paid talent” (as Charlie Sheen’s lawyer would call her), Tera Patrick. Andy allegedly kept following Chi Chi LaRue and Tera around, slurring his words and spilling beer on them. At one point, Chi Chi reportedly bellowed, “Leave me alone!”—and when Miss La Rue speaks, you better believe someone listened. Before Dick could ask, “Where’s my career gone?” a beefy security guard appeared and escorted him from the premises. Barbra Streisand is ready to return to musical theatre—at least on film. According to Arthur Laurents, Streisand is this close to taking on the towering role of Mama Rose in a big screen remake of Gypsy. But, contrary to published reports, she will not direct. Says Laurents, “She once wanted to, but playing Rose is enough to make her happy.”
