Mayoral Candidates open up at MBA forum tom dyer Orlando | From the sounds of it, many at the Metropolitan Business Association (MBA) Candidate’s Forum had already made up their minds about the upcoming Orange County mayoral election. But for those who hadn’t, the event offered a clear picture of three of the four candidates for Central Florida’s most powerful elected position. Former Orange County Commissioner Teresa Jacobs did not attend, and no representative from her campaign was there in time to offer a statement. The candidates clarified their position on matters of importance to the LGBT community. But in these recessionary times of high unemployment and unprecedented home foreclosures, attention was also focused on economic matters. With his book on government efficiency resting in his lap, upstart Matthew Falconer presented himself as the candidate of small business, with fresh ideas to revive the local economy. A confident Bill Segal touted his business and government experience, and described himself as “the person best qualified to lead this community.” And a relaxed and funny Linda Stewart promoted herself as the populist “can do” candidate. “I

am one of you,” she said to applause. “You can trust me.” Falconer, Segal and Stewart fielded questions submitted in advance by MBA and event co-sponsors Equality Florida, the Human Rights Campaign and The Center, as well as from the candidates themselves. After almost two hours at the microphone, each displayed differences in substance and style. In his opening statement, Republican commercial real estate developer Falconer made no reference to his LGBT audience. Instead he focused on his book, Building a Better Local Government, claiming that it offers 157 different ideas for lowering taxes, improving services, creating jobs and reviving the local economy by supporting small business. Commissioner Segal, a Democrat, acknowledged the significance of the LGBT forum—“This is the perfect opportunity to talk to one of our leading constituencies”— and asked attendees to consider which candidate would best represent them. It may have been a reference to the less polished Stewart, also a Democrat, whose folksy manner connected with many in the audience. Many of the questions focused on jobs, but the candidates also answered several

questions addressing LGBT issues, and disclosed some personal experiences to the more than 100 in attendance at the forum. Segal talked about his close friendship with a gay man while growing up. “My gaydar must have been better than his,” he said, “because I knew he was gay before he did.” Stewart speculated that she’s visited every gay bar in the city with friends and supporters, and shared that her family hosted a gay exchange student back when she was a student at Boone High School. “You didn’t come out back then,” she said. Falconer talked about a married coworker who came out late in life. “I saw the incredible pain he experienced,” Falconer shared. All three said they would vote for countywide non-discrimination protections. Segal said he would get it done within months of being elected, and Stewart called for protections now. Each said they wanted to see Florida’s adoption ban repealed. Falconer said he is for “whatever is in the best interests of the children,” and admitted he wasn’t even

aware of the ban until the forum. Falconer also wanted to study ramifications of partner benefits and a domestic partner registry before adopting either in Orange County. Segal and Stewart support both. Segal and Stewart also stated they voted against a constitutional ban on gay marriage in 2008. Falconer did not recall his vote, but claimed he supports “taxpayers of all shapes and sizes.” Contacted the day after the forum, Jacobs apologized for her absence and explained that a meeting in Polk County had run late and she was then caught in traffic. Jacobs offered to address any issues raised at the forum, and agreed to an interview with Watermark. “I certainly wasn’t trying to dodge any questions,” she said. | l |

staff report Orlando | Rev. John Middleton, senior pastor of Joy Metropolitan Community Church, is leaving his position this fall. Middleton has lived in Orlando for more than 20 years and has been employed by Joy MCC for 10 years. He’s moving to Jacksonville to care for his mother. “I love the people here and this is really bittersweet for me,” Middleton said.” We’ve only got one family, my mother is 94 years old and I don’t want to look back and wish I’d made the choice to spend more time with her.” His last Sunday with the church will be Oct. 24. The church Board of Directors is working with a regional elder to identify an

interim pastor. “The timing will work out very well so the pastor will be in place when I leave,” he said. Middleton said every effort is being made to make the transition as smooth as possible for the congregation. “With every change, whether we choose it or change is imposed on us, there always is a sense of grief because every change entails loss,” Middleton said. “But there also is a sense of hope, because every change offers new possibilities, and so to be wise in a transition is not to let one outweigh other but to live in that tension between loss and hope.” Joy MCC is an LGBT-inclusive church located on Ferncreek Ave. in Orlando. | l |

Bi DJ, Porn star charged in tattoo artist murder Group plans protest of NOM bus staff+wire reports New Port Richey | Bisexual DJ and gay porn actor Jason Andrews—also known as DJ Veritas—has been charged in the murder of a Tampa-area tattoo artist. Andrews, who appeared in countless gay adult films on SeanCody.com, was charged with the murder of Dennis “Scooter” Abrahamsen. Authorities say his accomplice was Amanda Logue, who was also involved in the porn industry and dabbled in prostitution. Authorities say that together, they stabbed and bludgeoned the 41-year-old tattoo shop owner to death with a sledgehammer in May and hatched some of their plans in typoand expletive-laden text messages, Florida detectives said. “I’m so glad you’re really commited [sic] to this take. Keep eyes for a knife, etc for me!” Andrews typed on his BlackBerry hours before the slaying, according to a transcript of the messages included in court records. Logue replied in a nearly incomprehensible text that she was excited—and she wanted to have sex after they killed Abrahamsen. Nearly two months after Abrahamsen was found dead in his Tampa-area home, Logue and Andrews were indicted by a grand jury on

first-degree murder charges on Friday, July 16. Logue is being held without bail at Florida’s Pasco County Jail and Andrews was arrested Thursday, July 15, in Chattanooga, Tenn. Andrews was arrested by U.S. Marshals and the Chattanooga Police Department after working for several weeks as a manager at the Chattanooga Billiard Club, an upscale pool hall and cigar lounge. He is jailed in Tennessee until he can be extradited to Florida. Authorities did not yet know if he had a lawyer. Police in Florida say the pair killed Abrahamsen in the early morning of May 15 and swiped $6,000 cash, his credit cards and a video camera. Abrahamsen was found by a family member 18 hours later. Abrahamsen had hired Logue—whose porn name is “Sunny Dae”—to work at a sex party at his house, and police said that’s when Logue and Andrews set him up. The 27-year-old Andrews was known in Chicago as DJ Veritas. Photos on his social networking pages show him working in straight and LGBT clubs and participating in an undated Chicago Pride event. According to several profiles on modeling websites, Logue did bikini and fetish modeling. | l |

Tampa | A group of LGBTs and allies have planned a protest of the National Organization for Marriage tour bus, which will stop in Tampa on Sunday, Aug. 8. Stand Up Florida, in coalition with several ally organizations including the Courage Campaign, hopes to counter the tour’s message of “one man, one woman” marriage by showcasing LGBT relationships. As of press time, Tampa is the only Florida stop on the NOM bus tour. “The National Organization for Marriage is a group that opposes GLBT rights,” said Anthony Farver, executive director of Stand

Up Florida. “This group further affronts the LGBT community by advocating that marriage is a union solely between one man and one woman.” As of press time, Farver said that more than 100 people were planning to attend the protest of the tour. Details on the location of the protest are still pending and will be based on information released by the tour itself, which hadn’t announced where it would stop in Tampa. When a location is announced, protestors will meet from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more details on the protest and for specifics as they become available, visit StandUpFlorida.org/NOM-Proest.html. | l |

New nightclub rumors fail to “infuse” Ybor’s gay night life erik caban Tampa | Two aspiring club owners have allegedly left Ybor City in a cloud of broken promises, confusion and bad checks after promising to deliver a hot new gay club. On June 23, a Facebook page popped up under the name Tampa Infusion, announcing a new nightclub in Ybor City. Postings advertised an all-star cast for the July 9 opening night, including RuPaul’s Drag Race cast members Bebe Zahara Benet, Shannel, Morgan McMichaels, JuJu Bee and Raven. Raven and Morgan McMichaels agent, Sunny Stewart, said Seth Parker and Ron Brock originally contacted her in early June with a request to book the two performers for a club they planned to open in North Carolina. Less than a week later, Parker and Brock informed her that they would be opening in Tampa instead. Nathan Brooks, an entertainer and promoter in GaYbor, contacted Parker and Broke, the owners listed on the Tampa Infusion Facebook page. Brooks was interested in managing the bar and helping with promotions. “Seth seemed legit as he asked me for a copy of my resume, samples of my work and a list of references which he did call and check on,” Brooks said. Brooks said after the conversation, he went to see the prospective location, which turned out to be a condemned building with no roof, windows or doors. When he followed up with Parker and Brock, Brooks found out that they had not yet arrived in Tampa or seen the location but stated that it would open in 14 days. Brooks said he decided to launch his own investigation, looked up records for liquor licenses and found no record of an application. According to Brooks, a criminal background check revealed computer theft and a weapons charge. A search on the scam-busting website

800notes.com also revealed that Parker and Brock have been behind a few telemarketing scams in North Carolina. With this information in hand, Brooks said he contacted Shannel, who told him that Parker and Brock were planning to move her to Tampa to become entertainment director of Tampa Infusion. Later that day, Brooks said he received information from Parker they were shifting the club’s location to the building currently occupied by Czar. When the Czar General Manager Sandi Hein caught wind of this rumor, she immediately posted a comment on Facebook explaining that Czar was not involved with the new club. Brooks said within 48 hours he called the rest of the scheduled performers to inform them of the situation. In doing so, he found that they had been given neither flights nor confirmation numbers even though contracts were signed by both parties. After that, Tampa Infusion posted “F*ck Tampa” on its Facebook page before being deactivated on July 6. However, Watermark was able to contact Parker through the club’s MySpace account. “You can write an article about why we aren’t coming to Florida,” Parker replied. “We’ve decided to open in another city and state.” Carrie West, co-owner of MC Film Fest and president of the GaYbor District Coalition described the whole event as “a big dust cloud blew through.” In the end, it was the entertainers who received the biggest blow. Most had no way to recoup the money they lost from the booking and had no flights to Tampa to try to make it up with new bookings. Hamburger Mary’s, The Honey Pot, G.Bar, The Flamingo Resort and Nathan Brooks Entertainment stepped up and booked Shannel, the one entertainer who was given a confirmed ticket to Tampa for July 9 and July 10. | l |

Village of Wellington prohibits LGBT discrimination richard gary Village of Wellington, Fla. | The Village of Wellington in Palm Beach has amended its Equal Employment Opportunity policy to prohibit discrimination based on both “sexual orientation” and “gender identity or expression” in Village employment. The policy covers the Village’s 258 employees. The action was taken following a request from the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council, a local non-profit organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression. “People should not be fired, harassed, or denied promotion simply because they are gay or lesbian, or because they don’t fit the stereotypes for masculinity or femininity,” said Council President Rand Hoch. Last spring, Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington played host to the world’s first international gay polo league

tournament, which was presented by the Gay Polo League. “The Gay Polo League’s selection of Wellington encouraged the Council to ask the Village to adopt a more inclusive Equal Employment Opportunity policy and to provide family benefits to employees with domestic partners,” said Hoch. As a result, Wellington’s revised Equal Employment Opportunity Policy now provides protections in conditions of employment for almost every citizen. “The workplace is an ever changing environment and it our goal to do the right thing by all of the people who work for Wellington,” said Village Manager Paul Schofield. “These changes are a simple recognition that the only thing that should matter in the work place is how well you do your job.” The community has approximately 55,000 residents. | l | Editor’s note: Richard Gary is a reporter with the South Florida Gay News and this article is used with permission.

ADAP waiting list gets relief jamie hyman There may be relief in sight for the thousands of individuals currently on the AIDS Drug Assistance Plan (ADAP) waiting lists. The Obama administration’s re-allocation of $25 million is intended to diminish the number of people waiting for eligibility to receive HIV/AIDS drugs. Florida has the second-largest waiting list in the country, with 523 individuals, second only to North Carolina. “Florida is getting some of the money,” said Lorraine Langlois, executive director of Metro Wellness and Community Center in St. Petersburg. Metro is the fourth largest AIDS service organization in Florida. “We’re hoping with this new AIDS strategy there will be something a little

different to take care of ADAP until health care reform kicks in,” she added. The list of viable drugs will stay the same. “The state of Florida will be reviewing it, probably in September, to see where we are at that point,” Langlois said. While the allocation is good news, some are concerned that it’s a temporary fix but not a solution. “This waiting list crisis is not new and it will continue to worsen if we don’t address the issues at its root,” said Paul Kawata, Executive Director of the National Minority AIDS Council. “If we fail to allocate the necessary resources to deal with this challenge once and for all, we will continue to fall short of helping the very people who need it most.” | l |

Federal gay marriage ban is ruled unconstitutional wire report Boston, Mass. | A federal judge in Boston has ruled that a U.S. law banning gay marriage is unconstitutional because it interferes with the right of a state to define the institution and therefore denies married gay couples some federal benefits. U.S. District Judge Joseph Tauro ruled in favor of gay couples’ rights in two separate challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act. The rulings apply to Massachusetts, but could have broader implications if they’re upheld on appeal. The state had argued the law denied benefits such as Medicaid to gay married couples in Massachusetts, where same-sex unions have been legal since 2004. Tauro agreed and said the act forces

Massachusetts to discriminate against its own citizens in order to be eligible for federal funding in federal-state partnerships. The act “plainly encroaches” upon the right of the state to determine marriage, Tauro said in his ruling. In a ruling in a separate case filed by Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, Tauro ruled the act violates the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution. “Congress undertook this classification for the one purpose that lies entirely outside of legislative bounds, to disadvantage a group of which it disapproves. And such a classification the Constitution clearly will not permit,” Tauro wrote. Opponents of gay marriage said they were certain the rulings would be overturned on appeal. | l |

Argentina legalizes gay marriage in historic vote wire report Buenos Aires, Argentina | After a record-setting floor debate, Argentina legalized same-sex marriage on July 15, becoming the first country in Latin America to grant gays and lesbians all the legal rights, responsibilities and protections that marriage gives heterosexual couples. As the heated debate stretched on for nearly 16 hours, supporters and opponents held rival vigils through the frigid night outside the Congress building in Buenos

Court strikes challenge to D.C. gay marriage law wire report Washington, D.C. | D.C.’s highest court has ruled against opponents of the city’s same sex-marriage law, saying they cannot ask voters to overturn it. Opponents wanted to challenge a law allowing same-sex couples to wed. They attempted to get approval to put an initiative on the ballot asking city voters to define

marriage in the city as between one man and one woman. But city officials balked, saying the initiative authorized discrimination and that putting it on the ballot would violate a district human rights law. The D.C. Court of Appeals ruled 5-4 that officials had the authority to keep the measure off the ballot and acted appropriately in barring it. The decision upheld a lower court’s ruling. | l |

Gays march in Poland to demand equal rights

Gay-marriage opponents who put hundreds of thousands of dollars into the successful effort to keep the practice out of Maine have kicked off a “One Man, One Woman” 23-city bus tour. The National Organization for Marriage began the tour July 14 in Augusta. NOM’s bus tour is scheduled to make a Florida stop in Tampa on August 8. For details, see page 8.

Nearly 8,000 gays and lesbians from around Europe marched through Poland’s capital July 17 to demand equal rights and more tolerance in the heavily Roman Catholic nation. The parade was part of the EuroPride Gay Rights Festival. Police said they arrested eight people—some of whom threw eggs and rocks—for trying to disturb the march.

trying to stay in the closet while online, and one of my co-workers got into hot water for outing someone on Facebook. That brings me to the first piece of advice for someone who wants to hang out online while staying in the closet: Make your wishes known, loud in clear. In the case of my co-worker, he met his closeted friend on Adam4Adam, hooked up a few times and hung out with him publicly at In the various gay bars around town. When the closet, online: closeted friend changed his relationship Can you? status on Facebook, my co-worker had no reason to believe his friend was in the Should you? closet and thought nothing of making a comment that referenced their shared sexual orientation. Apparently, that was a Jamie Hyman problem, and co-worker was reprimanded online editor for outing his friend. Come on, dude. You Jamie@WatermarkOnline.com were on Adam4Adam. Everyone knows. The second piece of advice is to build the thickest wall you can between the people who know and the people who you don’t want to know. Facebook lets you divide contacts into lists, and it can be set up so each list only sees what the user wants them to see. That means, theoretically, you could have a “Big List O’ Gay Friends” who enjoy completely different access to photos and information than your “List Of Bigoted Co-Workers” and your “List Of Crazy-Religious AntiGay Relatives To Whom I Can’t Believe I’m Related.” And remember, even with these lists in place there are still no guarantees. It’s impossible to estimate every possible hen the Constance McMillen connection online, and people who choose scandal broke—thanks in part to be online but in the closet should accept to the lesbian’s high school that no matter what barriers are put in classmates boasting on Facebook about place, they may very well face a situation how they kept McMillen from their where they’re outed by a well-meaning prom—I went apoplectic about what I friend. consider Internet 101: Nothing posted The third piece of advice is: Sorry, you online is ever, ever private. Emails? No. can’t be on Adam4Adam. Seriously. I Hidden blog posts? No. Facebook stuff set know membership is required but getting to “Friends only?” Also no. an account is not I will admit that exactly a challenging “No Privacy Ever, process and given No Matter What,” Come on, dude. Yeesh. While technically So, is it possible to be active online correct, it is a very black and white point while in the closet? Maybe. Unfortunately, of view and as we all know, the whole world—including the internet—is made up with the increasing necessity of cultivating of shades of grey. There is a middle ground a strong online presence as a prerequisite for career advancement, this is a question created by personal choices, privacy that is likely to keep coming up until settings and calculated risks that is worth LGBTs achieve full equality. exploring because the truth is, we’re all It is possible, and following the advice hanging out there already anyway. I just outlined will make it more likely to One choice frequently made by LGBTs online is whether or not to come out. I will work. Is it worth it? What makes this confess that it’s been a guilty pleasure for question interesting is how much potential me to find out via Facebook who from my high school class was gay after all, but I’ve Facebook and Twitter have to support also noticed some cagier profiles that could closeted gays online, providing channels to connections with others in the closet that go either way. I’d venture that several of would be impossible to reach pre-internet. my Facebook and Twitter contacts are

Given that, it’s easy to see why someone who isn’t out would still want to hang out online. Plus, there are all the other reasons anyone joins Facebook regardless of sexuality: To stalk exes and re-connect with people they haven’t thought of in years, like their pre-school teachers and that crazy bitch who lived down the hall in college. So yeah, it might just be worth it. Is it ethical? Public relations firm Ruder Finn has released a list of ethical guidelines for social media users, including “Honesty” and “Transparency,” but my instinct is for Ruder Finn to shove it. At this point along the Internet Time Line, I think it’s overly optimistic to hold people to ethical standards. Businesses,

sure, but hoping the general public has social networking accounts for more than a place to share cat photos and complain about Monday is unrealistic and begging for disappointment. Is it recommended? Maybe, but it’s not easy. It requires constant monitoring and maintenance of various privacy measures, and most likely, some worry about which chattier friend will spill the wrong thing to the wrong person. And of course, there’s a very good chance that despite all the measures put in place to guard a person’s sexuality, someone like my co-worker will inevitably make a casual comment about what a big ol’ ‘mo you are. | l |

How should we act when the educators bestowed with ushering our children into enlightenment and adulthood instead become the perpetrators of prejudice The Gay War and an army of pious conceit? The media for the South fiasco and hoopla generated by these students was not because of their actions, but rather instead by a place: the South. Brett Edward Conventional advice has been for LGBT Stout teens to seek out more progressive cities, to bide their time silently and get out as soon as they are able. However, if we are going to prevail in the battle for equality, this is not a winning strategy. What we need are more people willing to stand their ground and resist. We cannot win this fight if the only success stories of gay youths in the South are stories of escape. We need people of courage. This year, it seems that high-schoolers have answered that call and headed to the front lines. So, how did these kids get to be so brave? There are several answers to that question. It’s time to retaliate, not by redefining the left, but by reclaiming the right. Our system works best when there are opposing viewpoints to encourage debate. The right’s position of inflexible obstinacy is an obstacle to be overcome, not a point of view. But, we cannot reclaim the right without reclaiming the South. ways. We’ve adopted a general attitude of, “What do you expect? It’s the South.” The real question we should be asking is, “Why we are ok with that?” Geography is not an excuse. We need to question why we allow tradition to continue when that tradition is wrong and unjust. We must not fail to rebel because of the difficulty of it. It is because it will be difficult that we should do it. We have to stop taking our arguments to people who already agree if we are to advance. LAUPER-TUNITY KNOCKS One of our community’s strongest allies sings the blues while spreading a message of hope and tolerance. john sullivan

A

n icon and a diva even before such labels were popular, Cyndi Lauper has spent most of the last three decades putting out memorable music while simultaneously fighting for the rights of the LGBT community. The girl that just wanted to have fun, and along the way brought us hits like “Time After Time,” “She Bop” and “I Drove All Night,” has sold more than 30 million albums while striking a chord for equality, uniqueness and the plight of our Queer youth. She has been honored by PFLAG, The Human Rights Campaign and countless other community organizations for her tireless efforts to bring LGBT rights into the spotlight and keep them there. In June, Lauper once again proved that she still has what it takes to make music that goes above and beyond just everyday pop with the release of her eleventh studio album, Memphis Blues, a collection of blues covers featuring top-notch musicians like BB King, Jonny Lang and Ann Peebles. Lauper brings her Memphis Blues tour to Orlando’s Hard Rock Live on Sunday, Aug. 1, and to Clearwater’s Ruth Eckerd Hall on Wednesday, Aug. 4. This tour comes after what has been a banner year for Lauper with her appearance on NBC’s Celebrity

Apprentice, the groundbreaking for a LGBT youth residence in New York and even being immortalized by the Mattel Corporation as a Barbie doll in their Ladies of the 80s collection. Cyndi was happy to share with Watermark her reasons for doing a blues album and why the youth of our community are so important to her. Why are the blues so important to you and why do this album now? With Memphis Blues, it is about something old and new at the same time. This is an album that I’ve wanted to do for 8 years, blues is the basis of all forms of popular music—rock, pop, alternative, R&B. I wanted to do this CD when I was still at Sony back in 2004, Jeff Beck and I were going to do together at that time, but it didn’t work out. I have always been a fan of blues. I have been listening to the blues since I was a kid. Janis Joplin and the Rolling Stones made it modern 70s, so this project had always been sitting in the back of my mind. I was just waiting for the right time to do it. Eight years later, here it is. Continued on page 28 | uu |

In fact, Inception does recall other icks. Every Mission: Impossible movie features a similar team of experts. The shapeshifting visuals evoke Dark City and The Matrix. The psychological complication is somewhat like DiCaprio’s less exciting Shutter Island. However, Nolan combines these elements into something new, something energizing, with inexperienced Page as our tour guide. Emotional performances by DiCaprio, Cotillard and the rest of the cast anchor this amazing visual labyrinth. In short, prepare to have your brain teased by artists at the top of their game!

A summer movie with awed but realistic characters is rare. Among blockbusters full of huge explosions and shallow romances, a little indie comedy like Cyrus is refreshing. Thus starts a creepy, uncomfortable, but essentially honest battle for sweet, clueless Tomei’s affection. Cyrus was written and directed by Jay and Mark Duplass. “The campaign is to get straight people to stand up for the LGBT community so that all of us have civil rights and America can be the country it’s supposed to be.” —CYNDI LAUPER, SPEAKING ABOUT HER GIVE A DAMN CAMPAIGN

Since the 1980s, Cyndi Lauper has been a voice for LGBT equality, and her recest stint on Celebrity Apprentice raised money for her True Colors Foundation. Photo by Ellen von Unwerth

| uu | Cyndi Lauper from p.25

What blues singers and musicians have inspired you? The women of the blues really are my favorite—and who first got me hooked on the genre—Ma Rainey especially. I wore chains on my CD cover for her—It’s my tribute. She used to wear chains and a grill. She was gangsta before gangsta. My other favorites are Big Maybelle, Memphis Minnie and Lil Green. With so much to choose from, how did you decide which songs to record? It was tough for me. All of these beautiful songs on Memphis Blues were carefully chosen because I’ve admired them my entire life. From the moment Alan Toussaint hit the keys in “Shattered Dreams,” I knew right away that we were creating something really special. For me the best part of the blues are the songs that tell stories, that also are uplifting, songs about perseverance and strength, so I was looking for that when I

was choosing songs, or songs like “I’m Just Your Fool” that are just fun and great pieces of music. What do you want to do next? I don’t like to plan too far ahead when it comes to my “next” CD. I want to enjoy and live this one through. I am having a blast on the road playing this stuff live. The band I have on the road is probably the best band I have ever played with. These guys are some of the best blues players around. Charlie Musselwhite is even on the road with us playing harp. So we do most of the Memphis Blues and then towards the end of the show I do some of the hits because I know fans want to have that too. What was the most important thing that you learned from being on Apprentice? I learned a lot about myself. It’s kind of like Celebrity Boot Camp so things come out. It’s a test of your strength too, and I wish I handled myself better here and there. It reminded me of being in high school and being marginalized by the “popular” crowd.

But I do feel it gave me a chance to reflect on choices I make. Most importantly, I raised a lot of money for the True Colors Fund and I got the chance to talk about civil rights and the gay community. The True Colors Foundation broke ground several months ago for a LGBT youth residence in New York City. Why are queer youth so important to you? LGBT teens are coming out in greater numbers as they see themselves accepted and represented on TV and in movies, but they’re still being kicked out of their homes or running away and living on the streets. We need to make sure we’re taking care of them and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Of course I would love to see them in more cities. What can you tell us about your new We Give A Damn campaign? We Give A Damn campaign is to get straight people to stand up for the LGBT community so that all of us have civil rights and America can be the country it’s supposed

to be where we are all treated the same. There have been rumors of you having your own reality show. Is this something that we can look forward to or just wishful thinking? Yes. I did a deal with Mark Burnett Productions before I signed on to Celebrity Apprentice. Mark Burnett is probably the most successful producer of reality TV, so I am really happy to be in partnership with him. The folks there are smart and creative and I think it’s going to be a lot of fun to do. I love the medium so I’m excited. It is going to be mostly about me and my day to day, focused on my career. We start filming in January. | l |

Carrie West Applies For Tampa City Council Appointment Tampa Bay celebrity, staple, blogger and GaYbor District president Carrie West could be appointed to a higher position. West announced on his MC Film Fest website that he is up for an appointed seat on the Tampa City Council. While it is no secret that West has thought about campaigning for the council in the past, the decision to seek appointment could make his dream a reality. West is currently in the interviewing process for the post and was interviewed by council members for Linda Saul-Sena’s and John Dingfelder’s vacant seats. Decisions regarding the appointment could come by July 23. Here’s wishing West the best of luck!

Frame Factory closes shop After 28 years in business, the Frame Factory has shut its doors. Owner Jim Zinsler has moved to Waynesville, N.C., along with his partner, Scott, and their dog Jake. In an email, Zinsler says that his decision to shutter the shop on Fourth Avenue North in St. Petersburg was a “bittersweet” decision but that it was time to move onto the next chapter of his life. He hasn’t ruled out opening

another framing store in North Carolina, however. He also adds that he will miss his friends and family in Florida. We will miss Jim and Scott as well—along with the great work provided by Frame Factory. We wish them both the best in their new life.

Construction worker’s death delays Tru Lounge opening The brand new club Tru Lounge opened to a huge crowd and plenty of fanfare on July 10—just a few days after a VIP reception planned for the new venue was canceled. On July 7, owners and managers of the club hoped to offer a sneak peak of the 2325 Ulmerton Rd. club in Clearwater, but had to cancel after a construction worker collapsed and died while completing the renovations. No details were released as to the cause of the death but a Facebook message relayed that the incident would delay the opening. Fortunately for fans of dance music highend clubs, the opening weekend provided a glimpse of a new atmosphere of fun and fabulousness in an area that is not always associated with LGBT events. For details on the club, visit TheTrueLounge.com.

orlando overheard Bear hotel The glow has barely faded from Gay Days Weekend 2010, but already there’s speculation about next year. Rumors are running rampant, but at least one factoid can apparently be moved into the concrete category. The organizers of Tidal Wave, the big bear party at Wet ‘n Wild, have inked a deal with the Hotel Royal Plaza to provide an “exclusive bear hotel” for the weekend. And they plan an entire “Tidal Wave Party Weekend” of events for the well over 1,000 bears they expect to draw to Orlando the first weekend of June 2011. And of course, there’s a little drama. The TidalWaveParty. com website notes that, “it has come to our attention that another group is forming a weekend-long bear event to coincide with our planned weekend.” The Hotel Royal Plaza is the 300-plus room hotel located on Disney property in Lake Buena Vista that was for many years the host hotel for GayDays.com.

Ballroom beef Is anything more unlikely than the prospect of Michael Wanzie teaching ballroom dancing? It turns out the corpulent comedian was a dance instructor at Arthur Murray Studios for many years. What’s next? Miss Sammy as a Sumo wrestler? Wanzie’s hour-long ballroom

dance classes began July 10 and will continue Thursday nights through the middle of August. Singles and same-sex couples are welcome. For more information, visit Wanzie. com. And a happy birthday to Miss Sammy on July 20.

Queer quidditch The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has boosted local tourism, but none were as excited about the trip to Orlando as members of a Harry Potter fan club that recently visited the venue—part of Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park. According to sources, club members entering the new attraction burst into tears when they turned the corner and saw Hogwarts castle. And back at the hotel it was Quidditch, of course! There’s no flying when muggles play. Contestants wear capes and run with brooms between their legs. Seekers play tag while keepers try to prevent the Quaffle—a volleyball—from being thrown through a hoop. The bludgers are used like dodgeballs, and the elusive snitch is a sock stuffed with a tennis ball. It’s just a matter of time before someone forms a Queer Quidditch league. The capes will be fabulous.

GAYDAR GIZMO

A new app for iPhones and BlackBerrys let’s you find out if a guy is gay… without even talking to him! kirk hartlage

G

aydar—the ability to gauge whether or not a guy is homosexual—can now be had by

anyone. Yes, until recently, wondering whether that hottie across the way likes boys or girls has been left to a gut feeling of, Is he or Isn’t he. Oh sure, there’s always asking him directly, but that’s so 2008. Thanks to technology, finding out if he’s a ‘mo or no is as simple as using a new application on your smartphone. Grindr is a new gay/bi/curious social networking app available for the Apple iPhone or iPod Touch and select BlackBerry phones. The system uses the phone’s GPS to map out who

else is using the service based on their proximity to the user. After just a few clicks, the phone’s screen is filled with photos, profiles and stats of other Grindr users with the closest users appearing first. More information on a chosen guy is available as are chat options, additional photos and his exact location. The basic service is free, though a $2.99-per-month premium ad-free subscription service is also available. The app’s creator, Joel Simkhai, calls Grindr the next evolution in viral social networking. The idea for the app came from trying to figure out ways of meeting guys around him while Simkhai was living in New York City, and making

that process—apparently arduous in the nation’s most populated city—easier. “It happens to me almost every day,” says Simkhai, 33. “I go into a coffee shop, or the gym, or the supermarket and see someone I’m curious about, something about him catches my eye. If it’s a guy I’m attracted to I don’t know if he’s gay or not. Sometimes you know, but often you don’t.” Because there’s usually a reason you can’t just approach a person to talk—the intended target may be out with a group of friends, he could be busy weighing produce, you may still be waiting to grow Continued on page 23 | uu |

Brendan O'Connor ROLLINS COLLEGE SUSTAINABILITY COORDINATOR AND ARTIST stephen miller

O

rlando | When you first talk with Brendan O’Connor, you might feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of his myriad projects. “Yeah,” he laughs in his congenial, charming way, “I have my hands in a lot of things.” However, it only takes a few moments to understand that this artist, student and eco-leader has a specific gift for combining. He’s a visionary and energetic, but his primary talent may be his ability to connect—with projects and with people. O’Connor marries sustainability and art with other enthusiastic and engaging individuals. There’s no way to interview O’Connor without sensing the web of interconnectivity he inspires. To that end, this article gives you resources, so you can learn more about all that O’Connor is involved in. So, before we jump into all your many jobs, tell us a little about where you’re from. I’m originally from Canada. I went to college there and studied international development and fine arts. I do art. I have an upcoming mask show at Pom Pom’s Teahouse; it’s all funky, tribal masks. (More information is available at Myspace.com/PomPomArt) Almost four years ago, I moved here to be with Scottie Campbell (who freelances for Watermark), and I started studying at Rollins College. Is that how you got involved with the college’s green initiatives? Yes, besides being a student, a second job of mine at the college is as a sustainability coordinator. I’m studying environmental developing—like city planning but with a green spin. How’d you get started? I also happen to be president of the organic gardeners at Rollins, which kind of fell into my lap my first year there at school. We started an on-campus garden where people could grow their own food. It’s probably about 30 feet by 30 feet. I’ve always been a big fan of that; my mom taught me how to garden. We got a grant from Winter Park Health to make it larger and start to involve with Winter Park community more. I volunteer with the Eco-Rollins, the environmental club, and they just got hold of one of a residence hall, and we are overhauling it over the summer to make it a sustainable house. We’re also doing this completely native, funky organic landscaping plan around the sustainability house with an outdoor show for people who bike to class, and its right next to the garden. I also sit on a faculty-run sustainability committee; they invited me on so they could have a student point of view on initiatives we have on campus. Initially, the sustainability coordinators were recycling coordinators. Then we got a bike rental program, where you can sign out a bike for free from the library and have it for three days and bring it back. We’re working on 5-minute, 10-minute and 20-minute bike maps that you can use when you check out your bike, just to tell you where all the cool things around Winter Park are, just to introduce people to interesting things and local businesses that they may not know about. We also have a “once-in-a-blue-moon” markets on-campus where we have local vendors selling their wares, which is great. And now the college wants to step it up to make that market a larger event, and make it a more regular occurrence.

Wow, that’s a lot of balls in the air! Yeah, I’ve got to watch that! [Laughs] I want to steer and have that vision, and I never want to give up control of any of it. But I’m working on that. It’s me getting comfortable enough to get people excited in their own ways, to give them building blocks and let them run with it. Now, your other half, Scottie is also involved in this. He has the “Scottie Saves the World” blog. So you both share that personal activism. Yeah, it all kinds of grows together: my relationship, my schooling, my art and my job. Which is good, in a way. (Scottie’s blog is at WatermarkOnline.com.) Do you work to make your art about sustainability and reuse? Yeah, definitely. In fact, when I first came to Orlando, one of the first artists I encountered is Doug Rhodehamel. Everything he does has an element of using cool, reclaimed materials. That’s what I love about Orlando; you get to meet all these people who do these exceptional works on their own time. I’m going to do a show with Doug, where I’m going to do scotch tape sculpture, something weird and whimsical. I think of Orlando as an art incubator. (Rhodehamel’s art installations are viewable at DougRhodehamel.com.) And it sounds like Rollins is a great incubator for your eco work. Definitely. Rollins has small class sizes. All the professors and staff want their students to get as much out of it as they can. They are basically throwing resources and money at students, so that students can do things that they wanted to do. It’s like being paid for what you believe in. How can people get involved? You can come to Rollins and support the market, and you can get involved in the garden. Also, with any ecological improvement, it’s small, personal steps. Sustainability is vitally important, but the only way to make it lasting is to also make it possible for people. | l | More information about Eco-Rollins is under “Environmental Studies” at Rollins.edu.

ust a decade ago, Gay Straight Alliances were almost unheard of. High schools didn’t seem equipped to handle LGBT students and the idea of a group actually forming to include those students was unimaginable. Fortunately, time has changed things and more and more high schools have introduced GSAs to help foster understanding and inclusion among LGBT students and their heterosexual counterparts. Despite what the anti-LGBT contingent may think, GSAs are not about sex or sexual orientation in particular. “I don’t know the sexual orientation of any of our members,” says Zach Loomas, an openly gay 16-year-old student who attends St. Petersburg High School. “That subject is never even discussed. Of its 17 high schools, 16 have very active GSAs. “Our studies and comparisons with other districts that are similar in size and makeup leads us to believe the Pinellas County offers the best GSAs in the nation,” says Lynn Mattiace, an out lesbian and director of the Pinellas County School System’s Safe and Drug Prevention program. Mattiace says that a survey conducted in the late 1990s involved a case study of GSAs in Pinellas County and showed that the levels of participation, support from students, support from the school board and

high school administrators puts Pinellas County in the lead for successful GSAs nationwide. The only school in Pinellas without a GSA is East Lake High School and Mattiace says the only reason one hasn’t formed there is because there is no teacher available who is not already over-extended working with other clubs. The principal has indicated support if the logistics can be worked out and there is interest among a group of students to build a group.

county. Once a year in early December, the groups hold a picnic that is attended by an average of 100 or more students, plus educators, administrators and parents. In the spring, the groups come together again and sponsor the “Gay/Straight Alliance Dance,” a sort of alternative prom open to people of any sexual orientation. The GSAs in Pinellas County also participate in the National Day of Silence where members take a vow of silence for a day to protest anti-gay bullying, harassment and hate crimes.

Fantasies are meant to be enjoyed ADVICE FROM

The Truth

Truth@WatermarkOnline.com

I

Dear Truth, have an old flame: tall, athletic, very smart, sexy as all get out. We’ve remained good friends since he started seeing his new boyfriend and I, in all sincerity, am happy for him. My issue is that I keep fantasizing about the old flame. Explicit sexual fantasies. I’ve had these fantasies since the day I met this man but I feel guilty when I have them now. How do I make them stop? Hyponosis? A ruler to the knuckles? —Boned in Bithlo

the fore since he started dating someone probably indicates some sense of a missed opportunity now that he has a boyfriend. Did you have more than purely sexual feelings for him? And if not, maybe this is a function of wanting what you at least perceive you can no longer have. It’s a normal human emotion. It says here you enjoy the fantasies without guilt, secure in the knowledge that if the flame in question knew, he’d be enormously flattered, not offended. Don’t forget, life has a way of bringing us what we want. Here comes the Truth, baby: As long as these fantasies aren’t inhibiting your own dating or sex life, I’d say stop feeling guilty and enjoy. Dear Truth, My husband, Aaron, and I have been together for over 20 years. We have a great relationship except for one thing: Aaron wants me to quit my job because my coworkers don’t accept us. I am a well-paid professional in the Tampa Bay Area, and my income supports both Aaron and me. My company has a non-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation, and Aaron accompanies me to all of our office functions. But the reality is that I am often excluded from unofficial networking and social events where much of the “business” actually transpires (e.g. golf, sporting events, strip clubs), and Aaron rarely feels welcomed by my peers or their families at official events. At our last family-friendly function, Aaron overheard one of the directors’ wives tell their children to stay away from us, and I noticed how the women always seemed to swoop in every time we spoke to their kids. I don’t experience any harassment at my job and I’ve learned to work around any professional or social snubs, but it’s difficult to go in every day knowing that my coworkers and their families think Aaron and I are “less than” they are. Aaron and I argue about it all the time, but in this economy, I’m afraid to leave. What should I do? —West Coast Realist as these

Dear BIB— To begin, fantasies are As long judgment-free zones. fantasies aren’t You shouldn’t feel Dear WCR— inhibiting your own guilt for having While your fantasies about an lover is sweet to be dating or sex life, I’d old flame, or really concerned about say stop feeling guilty anyone or anything. your work life, Fantasies are not ultimately this is and enjoy. reality, and wanting your decision to to enjoy something make and he should you’ve enjoyed in respect that. Astros, Twins host successful LGBT nights staff report Just a week or so after the Houston Astros hosted its first ever Pride Night that drew nearly 1,000 LGBTs and supporters, the Minnesota Twins introduced its “Out in the Stands” event. According to Lavender Magazine, which is Minnesota’s leading LGBT publication and the organizer of the event, more than 1,200 tickets were sold for the Friday, July 16, game against the Chicago White Sox. The $25 tickets sold for the Twins game included a pre- and post-party and a Tshirt. Both clubs also introduced the night during key matchups. The Astros faced the St. Louis Cardinals during its Pride Night. Both organizations have expressed their support of the night and more LGBTthemed events could be in the works later in the season. In Florida, the Tampa Bay Rays have hosted LGBT nights during St. Pete Pride month, but not for the past few years. It’s unclear whether the Rays will return to promoting LGBT-themed ticketed events. | l |

An Olympics first: London sells LGBT-themed pins wire report London | London Olympics organizers will begin selling badges in support of the LGBT community this month. The badges, featuring the rainbow flag and the London 2012 logo, were on sale at the London Pride gay parade and will also be available on the London 2012 website. Former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas, who announced he was gay last December, complimented London 2012 organizers upon hearing the news. “I hope that everyone will buy and wear their pin badge with pride and help us achieve greater inclusion in sport,’’ Thomas said. Games organizers plan to sell more pin badges in the next year based on other issues such as belief, age, disability, gender and ethnicity. The London 2012 Olympics committee is said it is selling the rainbow pins to support gay rights, in what is reportedly a first for an Olympics “It’s great to see Locog (the London 2012 organizing committee) reaching out to all communities and making sure that London 2012 is a Games for everyone, in which every community feels included,”

“No one. They should all wait till I’m fuckin’ dead. I pass the mantle to no one. They’ll have to rip it from my dead shoulders. I know—gracious till the end!” —Joan Rivers answers the question of who is the next “Joan Rivers.” As if there could be another.

It’s about the money, honey Billy Masters Billy@BillyMasters.com

ecently, Joan Rivers caused a bit of controversy when The Advocate asked her if young gay performers should keep their sexuality a secret. “It’s part of the game. If you’re going to be a romantic idol and try to get every teenage girl to love you, then you’d be an ass to come out and say you’re gay. Ricky Martin was so smart. He did what he did, made his millions and then he said, ‘Guess what, everybody? I’m gay.’ It didn’t matter anymore because he didn’t have to bring in 16-year-old girls. If you’re looking at someone who’s your idol, thinking that maybe one day they’ll come ring your doorbell, you don’t want to hear, ‘There’s no chance in hell, honey, but still buy a ticket to the movie.’” For some reason, people have taken Joan to task for basically stating the truth. It’s something women have dealt with for years. Tell me that a woman who is up for a big job that requires lots of travel and powerful negotiations is going to have the same chance of landing that job if she tells the employer that she’s pregnant. Not gonna happen. By the way, Joan makes it very clear that she’s only talking about romantic leads. Comics and character actors don’t have these problems. “No single guy ever had

Ellen DeGeneres’ or Rosie O’Donnell’s picture up on the wall and thought, ‘Maybe one day I’ll meet her and she’ll marry me.’” During an interview with Upscale Magazine, Queen Latifah was put in the hot seat when it was queried that she could end all speculation about her sexuality by openly discussing it. Latifah didn’t bite: “I don’t have to explain anything. I don’t have to confirm anything. Look, I need my time. I need my life.” She also said that her life is an open book to people close to her. I am thrilled to report that this year’s “Broadway Bares” broke its own record, and raised over $1 million for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Creator and executive producer Jerry Mitchell triumphantly posted “We did it!” on his Facebook page, and went on to thank everyone who gave money. I’m told that the person who brought in the most cash was Reed Kelly (the hottie linked with Clay Aiken.) He raised over $40K, a new record. Someone started a Facebook campaign to get Leslie Jordan on Dancing with the Stars. Hey, it worked for Betty White, and Leslie is far more feminine and genteel. I called him up to ask if he knew about this. “Of course—I’m thrilled. It would be a dream come true. I was told in the one dancing class I took as a child, ‘Mr. Jordan, you must remember that the young lady is the picture, you are but the frame. Well, I want to go on DWTS and be the picture, not the damn frame.” Deborah Gibson and Tiffany are teaming up, and this isn’t the first time. Four years ago, I hosted back-to-back concerts by both gals at LA Pride. This time, they’re actually working together—In an original movie for the SyFy network. Our ’80s pop princesses are co-starring in Mega Python vs. Gatoroid. Deb plays an animal rights activist who frees snakes from pet stores and lets them grow to monstrous sizes in the Everglades. Tiff is a park ranger trying to save endangered alligators. And, as they say, “hilarity ensues.” The ladies have a fight scene in a swamp and they’re going into this project with the right attitude. Tiffany said, “Only in my dreams have I been able to have a catfight with Debbie Gibson...until now! This is so mega cool!” Our “Ask Billy” question is from Ronald in Salt Lake City: “I just saw A Single Man and fell in love with the guy who played Colin Firth’s student. What do you know about him? Is he gay? Do you have nude photos of him? And what was he doing wearing an angora sweater?” All very good questions. I’ll start with the important one—I have no clue why Nicholas Hoult was wearing that angora sweater. It certainly seemed a curious choice to me. But who am I to question Tom Ford? Speaking of Mr. Ford, he hired

the sexy 21-year-old to model his line of eyeglasses. Here’s a fun fact—do you remember the movie About A Boy with Hugh Grant? Hoult was the boy! As to your first question, alas, young Nicholas has been linked with women. Yes, a guy wearing an angora sweater and lip gloss could be straight. What would Joan Rivers think of that? It’s a world gone mad! When a hot guy who has made a career playing gay is being outed as straight, it’s definitely time to end yet another column. Just drop a note to Billy@BillyMasters. com and I promise to get back to you before Latifah realizes she’s not bringing in the 16year-old boys (or girls). So, until next time, remember, one man’s filth is another man’s bible. | l |
