GENERAL ELECTIONS INFORMATION

The 2021 General Election will be on Tuesday, November 2. Voters will cast votes for Virginia Governor (3 candidates); Lieutenant Governor (2 candidates); Attorney General (2 candidates); Mayor (2 candidates); City Council (9 candidates) and the School Board (3 candidates). There is only one candidate running for The House of Delegates, Commonwealth’s Attorney and Sheriff openings in Alexandria. There is also a write-in option for each contest.

Who Can Vote?

Eligible U.S. citizens who will be 18 years old or older by Election Day (November 2) may register to vote until Tuesday, October 12. Submit your application, update your voter registration information and confirm your registration status at https:// vote.elections.virginia.gov.

Ballot Drop Boxes

This year, ballot drop boxes will be available at all regular polling places on Election Day from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. There will also be one available during the early voting times at Beatley Library starting Friday, October 22. The Voter Registration Office (132 N. Royal Street) will have a drop box accessible to voters 24/7. It will be under video surveillance until it is collected at 7 p.m. on November 2, 2021.

In-Person Absentee Voting

Regular hours for in-person absentee voting are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Voter Registration Office. There will be evening, weekday and Saturday hours starting Saturday, October 2. Beatley Library’s in-person voting starts Friday, October 22. The deadline to vote in-person absentee is Saturday, October 30 by 5 p.m. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and in accordance with local requirements, each person at an early voting location must wear a face covering the nose and mouth while keeping at least 6 feet apart from others.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 2.

Absentee by Mail - No Reason Required

You may vote by mail in several ways:

• Fill out an online application on the Virginia Department of Elections website (https://vote.elections.virginia.gov). You will need your Social Security Number and a Virginia Driver's license or Virginia DMV-issued ID number.

• Send in page one of the fillable absentee form to the Alexandria Voter Registration Office. Visit https://www.alexandriava.gov/uploadedFiles/elections/info/ABApp2021FillableHighlighted.pdf to access the form.

• To request a paper application, call 703-746-4050.

You can confirm your application has been approved by visiting https:// vote.elections.virginia.gov.

If your ballot is destroyed, a replacement can be sent, but the spoiled ballot must be returned prior to receiving a new one. If your ballot was never received or it was lost, you will need to complete a statement of voter form indicating such. It can be found at https:// www.alexandriava.gov/uploadedFiles/ elections/info/voterform.pdf.

Election Day for WAL Residents

WAL residents vote at South Port Apartments, 6112 Edsall Road, and the shuttle bus will take residents to/from the polling place on Tuesday, November 2 after the regular morning rush-hour run. Please wear a mask per the city’s ordinance requiring such in public.
