WATERFORD MISSION Learning is its reason for being, its passion, its whole point. At Waterford, students learn to learn. They are taught and encouraged to be self-reflective in their learning, to acquire a repertory of ways of learning, and to deploy them across subject matter that ranges widely and is freshly challenging. In the process students gain a self-competence that will sustain a lifetime of learning. Learning is enhanced by the recognition of responsibility. Students value strong expectations that emphasize work, self-discipline, and dependability. Accountability for one’s learning further encourages the realization that learning is inherently communal and connected: that students and faculty are in it together. Though one can become accomplished as one’s own teacher, learning necessarily occurs in the context of other persons, their ideas and voices, historical and contemporary. Learning is therefore invariably indebted. Learning is inescapably moral. All learning bears on living and ultimately on how best to live. Aside from the natural imperative to learn, there is also the deep responsibility to share one’s learning with others in hope that they will be lifted thereby, their lives made richer and more fulfilled. There is no end to learning nor is it itself an end. Rather, learning is the means by which mankind acquires the nobility of the well-lived life. To pursue this affirmation, to continually engage and refine, first on its own campus with its students, faculty, and curriculum, then in the world at large, is the mission of the Waterford School.

A LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL BY ANDREW MENKE
PC: Chip Riegel
As I reflect on the 2016-2017 year and all that was accomplished, I am grateful for the generosity from so many in the Waterford community. This Report honors each and every donor and many of our dedicated volunteers. We salute your time, your talents, and your generous financial resources.
Waterford is blessed with a accomplished student body, exceptional educators, and dedicated parents. In partnership, we work to elevate your child’s sights and encourage them to dream big dreams. Their aspirations are shaped by a combination of exposure and opportunity, supported by caring teachers who inspire and encourage. Building the aptitude in each child to reach, grow, and develop is one of the most important roles schools play. In the spirit of growth, we launched our comprehensive strategic planning process in June. A 22 member steering committee, comprised of faculty, staff, parents, board members, students, alumni and community members will spend the year exploring opportunities to build ever stronger this extraordinary experience . Initial work will be focused on affirming the mission and primacy of the liberal arts experience – teaching students to think critically, to write and speak persuasively, to research, reason, and analyze. In that same spirit 2 Waterford School Annual Report 2016-17
of the liberal arts, we too need to explore and question, and look to build an enduring and even more influential environment for our students. This is what I love about schools — the pervasive sense of shared, resolute optimism and the happy acknowledgment that our work is never done, even as we strive to be the best. Our aspiration is to continuously look forward, together, to improve all that we do with intention—this has been the compelling story of Waterford for the last 36 years and it will be the vision that guides us during this next exciting chapter. We are grateful for your trust and confidence in us. I offer my deepest thanks to those who have supported Waterford this year and over many years. Thank you for allowing us to pursue a mission of deep idealism and focus on higher aspirations. Best wishes from the Waterford School, Andrew Menke Head of School
A LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR BY RON MIKA On behalf of the Board of Trustees, welcome to the 20172018 school year. To all of Waterford’s families, we hope you have settled in well over these first few weeks. Our Head of School, Andrew Menke, mentioned seeing so many bright smiles during drop-off on September 5. We share your enthusiasm for back to school, ready for another year of growth and excellence at Waterford.
to build a stronger Waterford School in the years to come. Andrew is positioned to lead the School with strength, vision, and stability in the coming years. We thank him for his transparency, authenticity, energy, and engagement during his first year at Waterford. And, of course, we share his optimism that the future is bright for our School and its students! We wish you great success in this coming year. Many thanks for your commitment and support to the people and programs that make Waterford such a special place. Ron Mika Chairman, Board of Trustees
During the 2016-2017 year, the Board of Trustees delivered a “First Year Charge” to Andrew.. The Charge encouraged Andrew to get to know the people, programs, culture and climate of Waterford, and to understand Waterford’s commitment to providing an educational experience that is both broad and deep, rooted in the liberal arts. The Charge also focused on laying the groundwork for continued success in the future, including our NWAIS re-accreditation process and the School’s strategic planning initiative, which kicked off in June. I am pleased to report that Andrew fulfilled this Charge (and more) during his first year. Andrew’s experience as an independent school leader allows him to bring a fresh perspective to this role as Head of School. His willingness to listen and observe provides him with a solid foundation upon which 3

A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT BY BEN HOKE Educating a child requires more than a great faculty and curriculum – it also requires significant community involvement. For more than 35 years, parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, and friends who care deeply about the education of our students have actively participated in Waterford’s fundraising programs. As we celebrate your support and look ahead to the coming year, we aim to build on this tradition of giving to create an even stronger Waterford School for the students of today and for generations to come. We truly appreciate the many supporters of our 2016-2017 fundraising efforts. I am pleased to report that we raised $1.4M. Many thanks to the more than 750 donors who participated in the Waterford Fund, endowment, special events, or through directed support to specific programs or departments. Every year, we invite all members of the Waterford community to participate with thoughtful support. Did you know that the Waterford Fund is the cornerstone of all fundraising at Waterford—the building block on which other fundraising efforts rest? Waterford, like most independent schools, relies on annual, tax-deductible gifts—in addition to tuition—to balance the budget each year and to generate revenue that supports our people and programs. The Waterford Fund The Waterford Fund is the cornerstone of all fundraising at Waterford – the foundation upon which other fundraising efforts rest. Waterford, like most independent schools, relies on annual, tax-deductible gifts – in addition to tuition – to balance the budget each year and generate revenue that supports core activities, program enrichment, and school development. During the 2016-17 fiscal year, Waterford Fund contributions totaled $656,140. Gifts ranged from $1 to $75,000 and were received from 546 donors. When combined, gifts to the Waterford Fund create extraordinary educational opportunities for our students. Donors to endowment funds, specific programs, and special events are listed in separate sections of this publication.
We are grateful for the vision and leadership of our Waterford Fund Co-Chairs, Kim Cordova Fehoko P’19,’22 (R) and Alison McSlarrow P’18,’20 (L) during this inaugural year of the Waterford Fund. We also extend our thanks to the many other volunteers who helped us Reach New Heights during the 2016-17 school year! PC: Jen Voros

ENDOWMENT As a result of new gifts to endowment and bolstered by earnings on investment, Waterford’s endowment has grown to $3,775,000, a 370% increase since 2010. The endowment provides long-term financial strength to the School and remains a core component in planning for the future. The Investment Committee follows sound due-diligence processes, including careful monitoring of our investments, to protect and enhance these funds for the continued financial benefit of the School. As always, the School is committed to transparency of all financial objectives as well as faithful stewardship to past and future donors. If you are considering an endowment gift or have any questions, please contact Ben Hoke, Director of Advancement, at 801.816.2220.
The Waterford School is deeply grateful to parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends who have supported our endowment. Endowment donors leave a lasting legacy at the School; ensuring our financial strength, expanding our curricular and extracurricular offerings, and continuing to attract and retain exceptional faculty and students. Waterford endowment funds are invested in perpetuity and fund income provides resources used to meet current operating budget priorities. Gifts may be given through outright and multi-year cash gifts, gifts of stock, or bequests. Our endowment is managed by the Investment Committee of the Board of Trustees, consistent with the Investment Policy, as approved by the Board.
28 Waterford School Annual Report 2016-17
WHAT IS AN ENDOWMENT FUND?
Waterford’s Endowment Fund is a savings account for the School, which is invested according to policies adopted by the Board of Trustees and the Endowment Advisory Committee. A portion of the earnings is then spent each year to help cover the School’s annual expenses, either for the general operating budget or for specific programs designated by the donor.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
The Endowment Fund provides a steady source of income to Waterford, making it possible for the School to be less reliant on tuition and annual fundraising programs to balance the budget each year. In effect, a larger Endowment Fund enhances Waterford’s ability to fulfill its mission now, and for many years to come.
Giving to Waterford’s Endowment Fund Endowment growth is an area of strategic importance for Waterford. Giving to the Endowment Fund provides a unique opportunity to you as a donor to make a dramatic impact on a part of the Waterford experience that you care about the most. Gifts and pledges to the Waterford Endowment in the form of cash or appreciated securities have the most immediate impact. However, gifts to the Endowment can also occur over a longer term through bequests in estates, gifts of real estate, and structured planned giving instruments. Endowment gifts to Waterford can be designated in the following ways: • Unrestricted gifts (of any amount) can be made to the general endowment which ensures our ability to sustain the financial strength of our School. • Gifts can be used to establish a new unrestricted or restricted endowed fund. If restricted, the terms specifying how the income shall be used will be established by the donor. Minimum gift levels are required for naming rights. • Gifts can be made to any one of our existing named endowed funds (see below) should there be one that reflects your philanthropic interests.
ENDOWMENT FUNDS The Nancy and Dustin Heuston Endowed Faculty Chair Established in 2015, the Board of Trustees established the Heuston Endowed Chair as a way to honor the profound legacy of Nancy and Dusty Heuston. Annual revenue from this restricted endowment fund provides partial salary for a faculty member. The Class of 2015 Endowed Scholarship Fund Established in 2014 through generous gifts from parents and students in the Class of 2015, annual revenue from this restricted endowment fund supports financial aid for an academically qualified student with demonstrated financial need.
Memorial Awards To further support Waterford’s financial assistance program, donors can support the following memorial awards now accepting additional gifts: Hilary Z. Heuston Memorial Scholarship In memory of Hilary Zell Heuston, daughter of Nancy and Dustin Heuston. Hilary graduated from the Waterford School in 1987 and her memorial award is open for public donation. Linda Kitchen Memorial Scholarship Created by faculty member Mark Bromley in 1994, and now in memory of Linda Kitchen, a beloved faculty member, this award is open for public donation.

Waterford Founders Gala Waterford parents and friends were transported to An Evening in the French Quarter at this year’s Founders Gala. Held on February 11, 2017, at the beautiful Marriott City Center in downtown Salt Lake City, the Gala provided an opportunity to socialize and have fun while raising money for Waterford. Our own Scott Harris led a New Orleans-style jazz band whose music was the perfect backdrop. Guests enjoyed delicious appetizers and drinks while meandering up and down Bourbon Street taking in a magic show, having a caricature artist draw their portrait, and dropping tickets in hats in hopes of winning a prize. The sold-out crowd was seated in the ballroom for a gumbo dinner, video premier, and live auction. Congratulations to Gala Chair Amanda Nelson and her committee for orchestrating a memorable evening; the decorations were spectacular, the entertainment was delightful, and the collective commitment to our School was evident. Over $161,000 was raised to benefit technology initiatives at Waterford. Well done!

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BY MIKE JUDD ’00, ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT The Alumni Association, now a year older and a year fuller, enjoyed another round of its traditional celebrations—our holiday dinner, our spring picnic—while breaking ground on new events as well, including a gathering last fall to meet our new Head of School and several Alumni Quiz Nights where assembled alumni set out to vanquish a team of faculty ringers. Our Alumni Council has grown with the addition of Lisa Walker Harris ‘96, Farrant Sakaguchi ‘95, and Cameron Swinton ‘94, and Sarah Beesley ’02, and we’ve welcomed back to campus a number of alumni who we hadn’t seen for years. As we continue to reconnect with alumni, we’ve come to better understand what Waterford alumni experience as they look backward in time at the school they called home. To see what we’ve seen, imagine this exercise. Ask our new graduates to list what they appreciate most about Waterford. Then, ten years later, ask them again. If you did, you’d notice the lists change, notice that even when the lists use the same words—names of friends or teachers, titles of books they read, achievements and celebrations and shortcomings—those words mean something different the second time they’re written. The point is better made by Kenneth Koch, in a poem I’ve loved for almost twenty years now: In a poem, one line may hide another line, As at a crossing, one train may hide another train. That is, if you are waiting to cross The tracks, wait to do it for one moment at Least after the first train is gone. 32 Waterford School Annual Report 2016-17
Everything works this way, Koch explains: “One dog may conceal another on a lawn, so if you escape the first one you’re not necessarily safe,” and “one hitchhiker may deliberately hide another and one cup of coffee another, too, until one is over-excited.” One uncomfortable afternoon spent in the Upper School Dean’s office worked this way for me, my embarrassment and frustration at stumbling into trouble concealing the appreciation I’d eventually feel for the teachers who listened carefully to my excuses then explained why I was still wrong. Lacrosse worked this way too, with my disappointment at our season-ending loss hiding lessons about concentration and preparation. Romeo and Juliet worked that way twice, as my freshman-year fascination with a frantic and desperate Romeo gave way to exhaustion with the characters’ inability to avoid the avoidable, which gave way in turn to a new appreciation for the play—particularly for a wise Juliet. Most of all, I’ve learned—as Koch writes—that “one friend may hide another.” But in Koch’s version, “you sit at the foot of a tree with one and when you get up to leave there is another whom you’d have preferred to talk to all along.” In my version, each friend at Waterford hid the same friend, that first friendship built on an inside joke, a love of the same band, a semester spent at the same chemistry bench, those friendships falling away only to find deeper friendships blossoming behind them. There’s the lesson. “One teacher, one doctor, one ecstasy, one illness, one woman, one man may hide another.” We’d do well, I think, to heed Koch’s warning: “You think, Now it is safe to cross and you are hit by the next one.” For Waterford alumni, one life lived at Waterford hid another, and we’re only now able to see the second. The years we’ve passed since, the time beyond Waterford, has been a “pause to let the first one pass,” a short moment or two spent waiting “to see what was already there.”
Divya Jayaraman’s parents chose Waterford because they knew education was the most important gift they could give their daughter. “My parents moved to Utah in the 80s, but it wasn’t until they’d been settled for a few years that they began to look seriously at schools for me. When they came to campus and met with Nancy Heuston, my mother knew right away that this was the right place.” And, it was Heuston’s vision – a well-rounded approach to life rooted in the Liberal Arts - that has set Divya up for the success she now enjoys. “Waterford gave me an incredible gift: a strong sense of the importance of a well-rounded life. I love writing. I have a sincere love of the arts. I was a member of the Waterford Singers and took AP Ceramics while I was a student. But, I also took enough math and science courses during my time at Waterford to keep my Indian father happy.”
DIVYA JAYARAMAN ’04 At Waterford Since: PreK-4 The last gift she received: A moustache glasses stand from her aunt (although she doesn’t wear glasses) What she does when she’s alone in her car: Listens to soulful music and stares longingly at other drivers What would she do if she won $10 million dollars: Pay off her student loans, send her parents to Europe annually, and then give the rest to charity
Divya graduated from Waterford in 2004 and then from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008 with a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. She returned home to attend Medical School at the University of Utah and followed that with a residency in Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. An interaction with a pediatric patient suffering from an anaphylactic reaction resulted in fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology at National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado. And now, Divya has come home again to join the faculty at the University of Utah School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Allergy and Immunology. She specializes in the treatment of asthma, allergy, and immune disorders in pediatric and adult populations, with a special interest in eczema management, food allergy, and severe asthma. In her new role, Divya will not only practice clinically, but she’ll also have the opportunity to mentor and teach medical students and residents at the University. The teacher-student relationship is something she learned to appreciate at Waterford. “Waterford has such an incredible sense of community. I experienced one on one attention in a nurturing environment – something I have yet to experience again. This is a community that cares about generations of students. I’ve run into many of my teachers since moving back, and each time, it’s a wonderful homecoming.”

James Browning says that spending time with Kathy Morris, Waterford Strings teacher and Orchestra Director, was the best kind of homecoming. James played the viola in the Orchestra while he was at Waterford and he reconnected with Kathy after the Orchestra’s winter concert. “I enjoy coming back to Waterford for the Orchestra concerts, but I don’t usually say hello to Mrs. Morris since I know how busy she is preparing for the performance. But, at the winter concert, the Orchestra played several Russian pieces, and I couldn’t help but ask Mrs. Morris why she chose to include them. That’s when I learned about the Orchestra’s upcoming trip to Russia, Estonia, and Finland.” James graduated from Waterford in 2011 and then from Carleton College in 2015 with a degree in History and Russian. He then spent ten months in Russia on a Fulbright Fellowship teaching English. After reconnecting this winter, Kathy began meeting with James weekly in preparation for the Orchestra’s upcoming trip. The meetings focused on Russian language and culture. It also gave James an opportunity to advise Kathy on the Orchestra’s itinerary. “Mrs. Morris used to say ‘go big or go home’ during Orchestra rehearsals. And, as I was helping her prepare for the Orchestra’s trip, she showed me that she truly lives this mantra. She put so much energy and passion into learning Russian language and culture, and I was like a proud mother when she stood up in the Orchestra’s spring concert and spoke in Russian to the audience.”
JAMES BROWNING ’11 At Waterford Since: 2nd Grade The last gift he received: Something his mom brought him from the grocery store What he does when he’s alone in his car: Speaks Russian to himself What would he do if he won $10 million dollars: Keep a modest sum for himself and give the rest away
But despite his pride in Kathy’s work, James was quick to revert back to the role of student when reflecting on his time helping prepare Kathy for the trip. “Although I was here to teach Mrs. Morris, it’s hard not to continually learn from her. She is such an excellent teacher, and the opportunity to reconnect with her and Waterford was invaluable.” This fall, James will begin a Master’s program in Regional Studies: Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia at Harvard and then hopes to pursue a PhD in History at Cambridge. Ultimately, James would like to teach.

“I was here to teach Mrs. Morris, but it’s so hard not to continually learn from her. She is such an excellent teacher, and the opportunity to reconnect with her and Waterford was invaluable.” JAMES BROWNING ’11
During her senior year at Waterford, Heather Sneddon had her sights set on an Ivy League education. She applied to Dartmouth College and was waitlisted. Word quickly spread through the faculty that Heather had not been accepted at her first choice. “I never learned exactly which teachers at Waterford sent in additional letters of recommendation to get me into Dartmouth, but it was Mr. Rosett who let me know that a group of them did so, without my asking.” The unique student/teacher relationship that Waterford is known for played a crucial role in Heather’s ultimate acceptance at Dartmouth and eventual decision to attend Brown University. “And so even though I ultimately got into Dartmouth because of the incredible outpouring of support I received from my Waterford teachers, I chose to go to Brown because Mr. Shaw, my college counselor, convinced me that his alma mater was the perfect fit for me. And he was absolutely right.”
HEATHER SNEDDON ’95 At Waterford Since: 6th grade The last gift she received: A gift card to Copper Onion from her realtor What she does when she’s alone in her car: Thinks about the work she has yet to finish
Heather graduated from Brown in 1999, obtaining an A.B. in Religious Studies. Returning home to Utah, she attended the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, receiving her J.D. in 2002. During law school, she served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Sandra N. Peuler of the Third District Court, and as a law clerk at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Division of Enforcement. She joined Anderson & Karrenberg in 2003, and has spent the last thirteen years as a commercial litigator focusing on contract, trade secret, intellectual property and real estate disputes, professional malpractice matters, shareholder derivative lawsuits and the prosecution and defense of all manner of business torts. Heather calls her time at Waterford extremely influential and is quick to attribute much of her success to the Waterford experience. “Waterford helped me develop the capacity for analytical thought that has served me well in everything I have done since. I learned logic, critical analysis, and writing skills at Waterford. I was well prepared academically for college and law school.”
What would she do if she won $10 million dollars: Pay off the practical things and then ensure that she could help her friends and family in need and work in the community on issues that would make a difference.

Gifts of securities are valued at the median price on the date of transfer to Waterford. For details on how to make a gift of securities to Waterford, please contact the Advancement Office at 801.816.2217. MATCHING GIFTS Corporate matching gifts are a great way for Waterford alumni, parents and friends to maximize personal contributions and increase the impact of their donation. If your employer has a matching gift program, be sure to send your company’s matching gift form with your Waterford contribution. We will return the form to your company, which will issue a matching gift contribution directly to Waterford. A Waterford donor receives full credit for both the original gift and the amount of the matching gift. PLANNED GIFTS AND BEQUESTS You can make a lasting contribution to future generations by designating the Waterford School as a beneficiary of your estate through a bequest, charitable trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy. Donors interested in making a planned gift or bequest should seek the advice of their own financial advisor before creating or revising an estate plan. We are grateful for the generous support of each and every Waterford donor.
