Vet on clarification mission Peter Owens Aaron Horrell wants to clear up some misconceptions about Afghanistan – and he’s going to the RSA and community groups to do so.

Since returning to New Zealand from his Afghanistan tour of duty in 2012, the Riversdale, Southland man has spoken to a number of groups in various communities. The most recent was his presentation of An Afghanistan Experience – a mix of speaking, video footage and photographs – at the Gore & District RSA. It was a sell-out, and presented 138 people with a new perspective on one of the world’s oldest

countries that has been engaged in some sort of combat for many centuries.

Ten New Zealand soldiers have been killed in the 10 years New Zealand Defence Forces have been serving in Afghanistan – five of them while Horrell was there last year with 2/1 Bn RNZIR. He had been in Afghanistan previously and also in East Timor It is the highest number of fatalities New Zealand forces have sustained since the Vietnam War in the 1960s and early 1970s.

He and the Gore RSA agreed that $5 of the $25 entrance fee for his presentation would go to The New Zealand Fallen Heroes’ Tr ust – an organisation formed by a group of people with strong ties to the New Zealand Defence Force. They saw a need for

practical support to the families of those wounded or killed while serving their country.

Chairman Baden Ewart says the trust, “loosely modelled on similar international initiatives, aims to fund projects that make a real difference to the lives of our heroes and their families”. Four trustees have been confirmed: Ewart (a colonel in the Royal New Zealand Infantry), Neville Reilly (a retired brigadier), Leith Comer (a retired lieutenant colonel), and Rob Munro (a retired lieutenant colonel).

Horrell says being a soldier, sailor or airman in the New Zealand Defence Force is more than just a job: “It’s a commitment to do as lawfully ordered by an elected government while serving the wider wellbeing of our country and all of its citizens.”

Peter Owens The Clutha District RSA won’t know until next year if it will be allowed to sell liquor in its clubrooms.

The club’s application has been approved by police, health authorities and the local district council.

But three objections (one since withdrawn) have been received from Balclutha residents, and it is mandatory that an Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority hearing be held to make a decision.

The authority has informed the RSA that a hearing will not happen until February or March.

Club president Des McBride says it appears the objections relate to the opening hours the RSA has applied for. There appears to be some misunderstanding because the club has applied to operate between 7am and 1am on Anzac Day. However, the club – which has more than 70 members, the youngest of them 18 – does not intend to open regularly for such long hours, he says.

Celebrations tee off at Taumarunui

The Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club will open its 75th anniversary celebrations by hosting the Clubs New Zealand North Island women’s golf teams championship on February 7-8.

Various celebrations and history launches are planned during the year, including a publication covering the club’s first 75 years.

The official jubilee weekend will begin on Friday, September 26 which coincides with the date of the inaugural meeting of the club. The jubilee will continue over the Saturday and Sunday.

The Taumarunui Cosmopolitan Club received its first renewable charter in July 1950, issued under the new licensing laws of the country at the time.

We know from insurance claims that twice as much money is stolen from clubs by staff and committee members than is taken in armed hold-ups and burglaries...but you are not likely to read about it in the newspapers.

Scams offer food for thought A club manager thought he was doing the right thing when he agreed the chef could take home food that had passed its use-by date. It would only go to waste anyway, he thought.

It was not unusual to have wasted food because the club’s restaurant operated from Wednesday to Saturday. But what the manager did not count on was the chef helping himself to the food store, including a side of a pig, on the basis that it would “go off” by the time the restaurant was open again for business.

It cost the club $8000 before the food thief was outed.

This is how the food scams normally work: – Staff do not use the oldest ingredients first, then take home food that has passed its use-by date.

– Food ingredients that do not appear on the menu are ordered. Guess where the ingredients end up? In a staff member’s pantry at home!

– More food is prepared than required, in the knowledge the surplus will be available to take home.

In one case I dealt with, a staff member got off a charge of theft because the club manager had given him permission to take unsold food home. The court found that preparing twice as much food as was needed is not a crime. Stop this practice dead

Good food management involves regular stock-takes and then finding out the reasons for discrepancies.

It’s also about monitoring food waste, and minimising it by planning menus and, for example, putting left-overs on special to clear them.

Keep up with play on alcohol change As always at this time of the year, I wonder where on earth the year has disappeared to. We are once again entering the busy Christmas/New Year season and, of course, the busy time for club management, executives and members. Clubs I have visited appear well geared for the influx of members and guests for the many functions that have been booked.

Sport has played a big part in the club calendar this year, with many members representing clubs in snooker, indoor and lawn bowls, and darts. With Jeff, Wiki and Gary retiring, 8 ball is going through a restructure and a new body will most likely take over the running the sport. Well done to this team for the work you have put in over the years.

All clubs should also be aware that sports adjuncts can now have spot prizes, but the draw must meet some conditions. Sports adjuncts requiring a special licence to run beyond the allocated closing time must have their applications in to their local council at least 20 working days before the event.

A very important part of club operations is the change to the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

This comes into effect on December 18, 2013.

All management, presidents and executives must be aware of the new changes, and, in particular, club executives or directors should be making arrangements to contact their local councils to find out the requirements to operate the club and the new fees that will be payable under the new alcohol licensing system.

Spot move to ‘reduce red-tape burden’ Spot-prize draws have been exempted from the definition of gambling under regulations which took effect on 30 September 2013. The changes are intended to reduce the burden groups running events face in complying with red tape, says the Department of Internal Affairs.

Under the Gambling (Non-gambling Activities) Regulations 2013, both commercial and noncommercial organisations can offer spot prize draws provided their events benefit the community, says the DIA’s Gambits newsletter.

Conditions include: The prize draw mist be secondary or incidental to a primary event, Entry in the draw is available only to those who buy a ticket or pay to participate in the primary event.

Clubs NZ president, board up for nomination Nominations for Clubs New Zealand president and its 13 regional area-board members will close on January 20.

Each Clubs NZ member club is entitled to propose or second nominations for the positions of national president and their area board member. Nominations must be signed by two financial member clubs.

When nominating or seconding, clubs should ensure that the nomination has been approved by the club’s committee and that the form is then signed by

the club president or an appointed club officer.

The term of office for Clubs NZ board members is two years. All current board members have indicated they are eligible for re-election, but they must be nominated in accordance with the rules.

Nomination forms must be completed with the signature and details of the proposer, seconder and nominee before being returned to the Clubs NZ office by 4pm on January 20.

Upper Hutt Cosmopolitan Club staff braved bitterly cold conditions at the Petone beach for a mid-winter swim to raise money for the Te Omanga Hospice. The club’s staff get involved with many community events through the year, supporting local charities as well as making regular visits to the children’s ward at Hutt Hospital.

Richmond rises from wreckage The earthquake-induced rebuild of Christchurch’s Richmond Working Men’s Club is due to begin early in 2014.

General manager Ricky Gilmore says the stageone building will be of limited size – around 650 square metres – and will comprise a bar, bistro, gaming machines, TAB area, pool table, large-screen televisions, an outdoor area, office/administration facilities, and raffles.

It will be erected on the north-east area of the club’s site in Stanmore Rd, and is expected to be completed by late April next year.

This building will be occupied for limited club activities until stage 2 has been completed. The stage-two building will become the main body of the club, and the stage-one building will then become a function venue.

Cashmere gears up Jo Bailey The Cashmere Club is gearing up for a hectic festive season, with its five function areas “booked solid” every Friday and Saturday evening until Christmas, says general manager Don Whyte.

“It’s always a busy time of year, with our annual New Year’s Eve party coming up as well. But we’re prepared and well organised” The Club was fortunate to come through the Christchurch earthquakes relatively unscathed; its $1.5 million refurbishment was completed just a couple of weeks before the February 2011 quake.

“We’ve picked up a lot of extra business since the earthquakes, particularly in the weddings and function market given the limited number of venues in the city,” says Don. The club continues to attract new members,

largely through the success of its restaurant, he says.

“Our food attracts more new members than any other area of the club. It is a few steps up from what diners might expect from club-style food. We get a lot of return visitors to the restaurant, who then decide to join up.”

Sitting alongside familiar favourites such as steaks, roasts and fish and chips are the likes of free-range pork belly with tomato and chilli in a light honey glaze, and oven-roasted chicken breast with caramelised fig, bacon, mushroom and white wine.

“Our head chef, Alan Truman, and second-incharge, Frank Hughes, do a fantastic job. They’ve both been with us over 18 years and take a lot of pride in what they do. The kitchen runs like clockwork.”

They are also responsible for organising the buffet meals for weddings and functions, he says.

during the refurbishment. Other additions included a new sports bar with plasma and LCD screens, a big screen for major sports events, 10 pool tables, two snooker tables, and a full-service TAB with both a self service and staffed terminal.

One of the function areas includes a sports hall used for many activities and events.

Don Whyte says the club also has two squash courts, an expansive outdoor drinking area and award-winning lawns and gardens.

He describes the club as a “real community hub”...home to various community and sporting groups such as the Sydenham Rugby Football Club, Avon City Rock and Roll, martial arts groups; and service clubs such as Grey Power, Probus and Rotary. ”Overall we’re pretty happy with the way things are going and we’re looking forward to a great few weeks ahead.”

Despite this problem, the entire club is backing the application for a liquor licence and is determined to be operative as soon as possible, he says. In the meantime, members plan to open a couple of nights a week to serve food, tea and coffee.

McBride emphasises that if the RSA is granted a licence, it be open only to members and invited guests, and will not be a public bar. It will be run by volunteers, with members having to gain a barmanager licence at their own expense.

Members of the executive committee say the RSA is an important part of the community, and running a club provides the means to maintain the building.

It is eight years since the Clutha District RSA operated from its premises in Clyde St, the main street of Balclutha. Over most of that time, members have used the facilities at a tavern that leased the premises from the club.

However, just over 12 months ago, the tavern ceased trading and handed in the liquor licence that applied to the property.

Richmond rises from wreckage From page 5 working on the design and build of stage two. It will be a substantial modern building that will not only incorporate most of the facilities the club had previously, but also many innovations with up-todate technology in mind.

It will be a modern club, with modern features that will cater to the broad spectrum of members and guests, he says.

He sees it providing the greater Richmond area with a community hub for the next 125 years. The Richmond WMC has, in fact, been part of the local community since 1888.

The original building had continued to be used

as a billiard room until it was severely damaged in the September 2010 quake. Plans were being made for its repair, but the February 2011 quake spelled its doom, along with other club buildings that have since been demolished.

The club continued to trade from the remaining wing (built in the early 1990s) until August 2012 when it was discovered the building required substantial structural repairs.

After negotiations with its insurance provider, the club decided not to retain this building, but instead to plan a total rebuild.

Demolition of the 1990s buildings began in late October with an end-of-November completion target to create a clean canvas for the rebuild.

New look ‘wows’ Hoki crowd Karen Phelps New locals walking through the doors of the Hokitika Chartered Club for the first time are a reflection of the extensive refurbishment done two years ago, says club secretary Donna Douglas.

“Of course, we still cater to our long-term members, but it has opened the door to a lot of new members as well.”

The interior of the club has a sparkling new décor with new wallpaper, paint and blinds. But one of the main changes has been to the restaurant area.

The kitchen has been repositioned next to the restaurant, and gone are the days when staff had to carry plates of food through the club to serve patrons who were dining. This has resulted in more efficient service and relaxed atmosphere for members.

The club has also chosen to employ its own chef, and has someone Douglas considers one of the best chefs in Hokitika.

The restaurant has been decorated in earthy tones and the ceiling replaced and ambient lighting, renewed to give the room a soft glow. A kitchen equipped with the latest mod cons completes the offering.

“Tasteful” and “sophisticated” is how Douglas describes the new décor, which was designed by a Coast company from Greymouth.

There is also a lounge area with ottomans and a sofa for people to chill out. Black and white photos of yesteryear-Hokitika on the restaurant walls have drawn positive feedback, with many members enjoying perusing the images.

The restaurant is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 5.30pm to about 9.30pm and post renovations is now typically full. Pizzas are a popular choice according to Donna Douglas, especially the chicken, apricot and cream cheese.

Members also enjoy the bushman’s style platter packed with sizzling porterhouse steak, eggs, tomatoes and sausages drizzled with a creamy mushroom or garlic sauce.

The restaurant offers a roast special of $9 for a half and $15 for a full, and the menu changes seasonally.

Another big transformation has occurred in the bar area where the bar has been reclad in modern terracotta tiles with funky blue LED lighting.

New lightshades and fittings, including a display cabinet, complete the look. The bar has been attracting a younger crowd into the club, says Donna.

The club, which has two pool tables and nine dartboards, has been the venue of choice for a number of important club sports competitions, including the Hokitika Fours darts competition. Next year the club will host the Seven Shields darts tournament.

In 2013 the Hokitika Chartered Club hosted the Clubs New Zealand South Island table tennis Tournament and in 2014, it will host the Clubs NZ

“The number of new members has increased by at least 25% per year since the renovations and we have such a range of members now with younger people coming through the doors. Members who haven’t been into the club for a while have gone ‘wow’ when they’ve seen what we’ve done. It’s helped to put the club on the map and it is now absolutely one of the best venues in Hokitika.”

A year on...and Porirua prospers Porirua Club members have been enjoying their renovated facilities for just over a year now. The $270,000 project, which was completed in three stages, involved expanding the club’s TAB section, creating a dedicated reception area, and adding two new office spaces.

Kitchen upgrade on the January menu in South Wairarapa Sue Russell A $70,000 kitchen upgrade is scheduled to begin at the South Wairarapa Workingmen’s Club in late January. This follows the redecoration of the dining room, which is run by an independent caterer and has become a popular destination, according to club manager Dave Linton.

The Greytown-based club is one of only a handful of clubs in the country to hold a queen’s charter.

“I think there are only 13 clubs with queen’s charters operating now,” says Dave Linton. “Apart from the honour of holding one, it also means we don’t need to hold a liquor licence.”

He also believes that the club, founded in 1877, may well be one of the oldest in the country.

the club draws its 1200-plus members from across the South Wairarapa area.

He describes the number of new members joining as steady. The annual subscription ranges from $15 to $50, depending on age.

He says the decision to offer a junior membership option has proved popular.

“It’s for those from 13 years of age and is a good way to introduce our sports clubs to them.

Also proving very worthwhile is the introduction of a married/partnership membership option at a reduced rate.

The club established an education and welfare trust fund 20 years ago to provide funding support for the children and grandchildren of members.

“Grants of about $500 are available on application. We started dispensing the funding from the interest accrued 12 years ago. The vast majority

of grants are for those going to university or to tertiary education in one form or another. This year we gave out 21 grants, including one for a trainee midwife.”

Dave, who has been the manager for 14 years, says he is working on making the necessary changes in software to comply with the changes in the Gaming Act on downloadable jackpots.

“We have 13 pokie machines and we usually replace at least one a year. I’m looking at software options, and we’re expecting it is going to cost in the order of $40,000 or so to see the upgrade through.”

The Life Members’ Trust runs raffles as a fundraiser and also a Calcutta on the Melbourne Cup. There is usually monthly entertainment at the club, and a membership draw on Wednesday nights jackpots to a “must go” level of $2000.

“They’re our most popular nights, when the

draws are up. But we have a core of regular loyal members,” Dave says.

The club has 10 staff, including part-timers, with Dave the back-up behind the bar. Visitors are welcome to pop in and look what’s on offer.

“It’s always nice to see new faces. Many are surprised at our facilities when they step inside, and staff will answer questions and make you feel very welcome.”

Function centre on way at Petone Sue Russell Planning has begun for a function/expo centre on the Petone Working Men’s Club site. It’s an exciting development and will be a phenomenal resource for the community, says Jeff Cochrane, who is part of the club’s management group.

The idea is the latest expression of the club’s intent to espouse new ideas and to engage with the community.

“Our president and all the people on the board are regulars here. It really says something when the people who work here want to stay and be part of this community after hours.”

There’s an attitude that “a good idea can come from anywhere”, says Jeff Cochrane, who is relatively new to club manager in his graphic designer role.

Ideas are encouraged at weekly management meetings and when staff – and there are well over 100 of them – get together.

“We held a burlesque show (December 6). This idea came about because the wife of a staff member is a burlesque dancer.”

Christmas, he says, is a magic time, with a full day of fun and games for children at the club and in the park over the road in November, and the annual Santa’s Sleigh Charity Toy Run in December. when toys are taken to sick children at Hutt Hospital.

“Last year we had 300 children, and we took them outside to play at the park, giving mums and dads a break as well,” says Jeff.

This year $4000 was donated to the Pink Ribbon Club during Breast Cancer Awareness Week.

The club was also the venue for the Five Bridges marathon run.

And, while the club may have been around for 125 years, it is very much in the “here, now and future” when it comes to marketing and communication.

“I knew nothing about the club and I couldn’t believe how big it was, just how many people belonged to it, and how much is going on inside its

walls,” says Jeff Cochrane, whose background is in graphic design and information communication.

“My job is to make sure that those who go onto the website know straight away all the events and attractions the club has to offer,” says Jeff.

“To do this, we’re going to throw out the old website to create something much more dynamic and accessible.”

With 12,000–13,000 members and easy access just off the motorway, the club is the centre of a heap of activity. the Petone Working Men’s Club and Literary Institute.

Its multi-faceted adjuncts range from Indoor bowls through dance and karaoke to pigeon training.

Every three months the club holds a guaranteed $10,000 poker tournament.

And the importance and connection to history of the club’s full name, the Petone Workingmen’s Club and Literary Institute, continues to be recognised.

The club’s library, which is used often by members, dates back to times of war and houses an extensive number of books.

Waipuk readies to celebrate Sue Russell Next year’s centennial celebrations are stacking up as an exciting three days at the Waipukurau Club.

A committee is beavering away reading old minute books and documents stretching back 100 years as the basis to write a factual account of the club’s history.

For former manager Sally Brightwell, who has had a long association with the club, the process is fascinating.

“While we’ve been looking forward to the centennial, we began writing the book only in May. There is a lot to read and it is a real treat reading through the beautifully handwritten documents. We even have a ledger book that goes right back to 1914.”

A special book launch on Friday, May 30 next year will mark the start of the centennial event.

While Sally Brightwell is unsure how many people will attend the book launch and the weekend’s activities, she is sure the celebrations will be a

fitting tribute for the club and its former and present members.

She says the significance of the book – a blend of historical account and focus chapters – will play out in time.

“With our oldest members now about 80 years old, it is really important we gather the history together so that when they are no longer with us that history hasn’t been lost forever.”

The club can accommodate up to 120 guests for the Saturday dinner and organisers are hoping something like this number of people will attend.

Saturday’s jacket-and-tie dinner will have a more formal feel to it. An art auction will raise money for the Waipukurau branch of the Cancer Society.

“A lot of the art in the auction has been painted by wives of members,” says Sally. “Twelve artists in total will feature work in the auction.”

The celebrations will conclude with a Sunday mix-and-mingle time.

The Waipukurau Club’s current manager, Alan Keate, says that the club has changed a lot.

the ton 1930s, were renovated in 1989 to include a function room and commercial kitchen, giving the club the space and capacity to host weddings, 21sts and other celebrations.

A covered outdoor area was added in 2008 for patrons’ use in accordance with the outdoor smoking policy introduced some years earlier.

The club’s membership stands at 274, but in its heyday back in the 1970s, it soared to around 400.

“Though our numbers have dropped, the club is in an excellent situation financially and it is in very good heart,” says Alan Keate.

“We are debt-free, have money in the bank, and the building is in good condition. I put it down to a combination of good committees and good management.”

The club has a long and successful billiards and snooker history, something that continues to this day. The annual snooker tournament in late July or August is well patronised and attracts top competitors from all over the lower North Island.

Gisborne’s smallest club big on darts and tradition Sue Russell While the 2nd NZEF Association Inc is the smallest of Gisborne’s three clubs, manager Bill Allan says it is in good heart and serves its members well.

“Often, the three clubs share the entertainment around so that there isn’t doubling up. Sunday is traditionally our entertainment day, and we have entertainment as often as we can.”

The 2nd NZEF Association Inc, at 333 Palmerston Rd, Gisborne – just a few blocks from the botanical gardens – opens at noon Tuesday to Friday and at 10am weekends.

Formed 60-plus years ago, it is one of New Zealand’s two remaining 2nd NZEF clubs (the other is in Invercargill). Bill Allan says there hasn’t been a lot of change since it started.

“The history of the 2nd NZEF is quite cultural really. When the boys came back from World War 2, because they were Maori, they decided to start their own association; that impulse, built around their identity, has continued.”

The club is open to members and guests Tuesday to Sunday. Darts is a particularly strong activity, with twice-weekly competitions.

“The summer league darts, where we play against teams from other clubs in the district, is

really popular,” says Bill. “During the week darts is played here on Tuesday and Friday nights, with Tuesday the night for the serious players.”

Bill Allan worked at the Wainui RSA and in Whangamata for several years before taking up his present position. He has been connected to the hospitality industry long enough to know that a good manager needs a particular skill-set and disposition.

“You have to be people-patient....that’s the best way I can describe it. I see myself as the sheriff and the go-between with staff, members and the committee.

“You have to be friendly and be honest. If you say you’re going to do something, then you have to do it.

And don’t be afraid to ask for advice, and be open to other ways of looking at things.

“You also have to mix and mingle with the members, have a beer with them every so often, and not just stick with the same group.”

In the end, he maintains, the art of being a good manager comes down to simple stuff. Common sense above all else is his mantra.

“It’s my responsibility to try to keep the peace and keep the place ticking over as smoothly as possible,” Bill says.

“And when you’re dealing with strong personalities, you’ve got to be quite objective and strong.”

Hospitality’s my thing – new Te Anau manager Neil Grant

The National Service Club has sought to manage its growth – it has capacity for a further 350 members.

Adjuncts heart of National Service Sue Russell Hastings National Service Club Inc, established in 1920, has only seven years to wait before it is 100 years old.

Manager Shelley McGhie says the club is proud to be known as ‘The Friendliest Club in the Bay’, and it’s a reputation it intends to keep.

“The club’s objectives underpin this aspiration: to foster, promote and encourage among members a spirit of social enjoyment. That’s at the core of everything we do, Shelley says.

Ten years ago membership stood at 600.

Obviously the club is achieving its objective because membership is now 1100.

The heart of the club’s activity resides in its strong adjunct structure – indoor and outdoor bowls, darts, pool, snooker, golf, even a pigeon club,. Other organised groups include a very successful wine club and a punters’ club (its members especially enjoy following the rugby in the regular picks competition).

When weekends roll around, the most popular, regular entertainment happens at the Sunday afternoon karaoke sessions. Shelley says they are well patronised.

Connections to the wider community are another strength of the club, she says.

“We give community groups free use of our facilities. These groups include the Hawke’s Bay Jazz Club, the Line Dancing Group, the Hawke’s Bay Country and Western Club, the Cardiac Club, and the local Rotary club.”

Facilities include an 18-machine pokies room, a restaurant that specialises in affordable meals, and a function area.

Another club objective is to manage growth, and there is room to accommodate a further 350 members. With the recent merger of the Hastings RSA and Hastings Hibernian clubs, Shelley has noted a heightened level of membership enquiry.

“We’re enjoying seeing some new faces in the club, and I know our members and my team will do everything to make new members feel very welcome.

“We are targeting the 25 to 40-year-old ‘Tradies’ as the committee sees this cohort as the future membership basis of the club.”

Planning is under way for the Pen Hawkins Clubs New Zealand National Golf Tournament in March – the largest event the club has hosted.

The National Service Club is open seven days a week (from 10am Tuesday to Saturday and from 11am Sunday and Monday). The restaurant is open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday, and for Dinner Thursday to Sunday.

Mary Climo is new to the club scene, but not new to the hospitality industry in Te Anau.

“Hospitality is my thing,” says the new (she started in August) secretary-manager of the Te Anau Club. “I owned the Moose Bar in town for nine years, and worked for the Tourist Hotel Corporation before that.”

She says she is very conscious that in a town the size of Te Anau, it is pretty futile to compete for the same relatively small permanent customer base.

So she has no intention of trying to lure people away from events such as the long-running ‘Dress up for the Melbourne Cup’ event in another pub.

Rather, she wants to promote the things that make the club special.

So, the Melbourne Cup came to the Te Anau Club without all the razzamatazz...the club offered a quieter but enjoyable occasion with nibbles, sweepstakes, easybets and spot prizes.

“We’ve got a beautiful outdoor area, and our facilities for events are great,” says Mary. “We have the capacity to cater for several hundred people, which is good, because the local churches are fairly

small. It’s easy for people to set up for things like weddings, 21sts or funerals.

“There’s a fenced area that is safe for kids, and we are not near the main street, so we can promote ourselves as a family destination. We don’t have a playground, but do have lots of games kids can play.”

The club is used by local organisations such as Rotary, Probus, and a line dancing group, and the Fiordland Arts Society has an exhibition on the site.

Many Te Anau Club members are out-of-towners, typical of many tourist-town clubs. These members and the locals enjoy other facilities the club has. The restaurant is quiet during the week, but gets busy at the weekend.

“People who come here are looking for a fairly quick meal that is good value for money,” Mary says.

The menu is extensive, ranging from pasta or caesar salad, through baked or battered blue cod to ribeye or carpetbag steak. Burgers and open sandwiches feature, and there are more takeaways available than you can shake a salt cellar at.

Small clubs don’t always have the wide range of sporting adjuncts city clubs do. Te Anau has its own six-hole putt (and probably, swear) mini-golf course, indoor bowls is played in winter, and free darts and pool are popular.

Events are a feature.

The local fire chief is a member, and kept an eye on the controlled fire works and chinese lantern night on Guy Fawke’s Day. A recent fishing competition was spoilt somewhat by rubbish weather, but it has given club members an idea of what is required for when they host of the Clubs New Zealand fishing competition on March 22 next year.

Water sports on Cromwell doorstep Neil Grant Imagine, glass in hand, you look out the main window of your club, and barely a couple of hundred metres away, you see the streaming rooster tails and hear the throbbing V8 motors of powerful jet-boats barrelling past. That’s not uncommon for members of the Cromwell Town and Country Club.

Last Easter, the New Zealand Power Boating Association included Lake Dunstan in its race itinerary, and many of the boats pulled up virtually at the club’s doorstep. Some of the staff even got a chance to go for a high-speed spin.

In mid-October, the World Jet-Boat River Racing Marathon was held in the district, and in November, the local power boating club held a local regatta.

It’s hard to imagine a better spot for a club – right on the shore of a lake used by so many recreational folk. Power-boats, yachts, dinghies and fishers all making use of the waters behind the Clyde Dam. The Southland Otago Axemen’s Association also runs one of its annual-circuit events on the club’s lawn nearly straight after Christmas. It’s a spectacular and popular event, especially as a local

lad, Brad Pako, does well on the circuit.

Then, on January 5, there’s a fishing competition.

Lake Dunstan is well stocked with trout, and can be fished by boat or from the shore. Entry forms are available from the club, Hunting and Fishing Cromwell, or Cromwell Sports.

Club manager Catherine Cowie is pleased with the profile such events bring to the club and the town.

Many of the club’s members are out-of-towners, who are either passing through to Queenstown or Wanaka, or have cribs in the district.

The club’s restaurant is a popular spot for these folk and for locals, especially on Thursday nights, when there’s a members’ draw.

“We’ll be having the usual kids’ party this year,” says Catherine. “We’re having sack races, egg-andspoon races, three-legged races, and so on. We want parents to join in the fun.

“For the adults, we’ll have Kurt Aikman back again for New Year’s Eve. He’s a brilliant singer.”

As she says, Cromwell, in the centre of Central Otago and the Lakes district, is a popular holiday destination, and the ‘Town and Country’ is well sited to cater for those wanting to make the most of what’s on offer.

‘Solid growth’ as Invercargill WMC works towards its half-century Sue Russell There will be 50 candles on the cake next year when the Invercargill Workingmen’s Club celebrates a milestone in its history.

A committee has been set up to organise the event, and club manager Kevin Grey is hoping a good turn-out from amongst the 4000 or so current members will help make the celebrations special.

Meanwhile, there has been solid growth in club numbers, especially in the last 12 months, he says..

“I put this down to several things, including the free entertainment, the big screen TVs, a bottlestore and convention centre, and just a really fun, welcoming atmosphere we’ve worked hard to foster.”

The club has an array of facilities for members and guests. The 24 pokie machines already have the downloadable jackpot installed.

And the financial picture is strong, says Kevin.

Before managing the Invercargill WMC, he worked for five years in a similar role at Porirua.

He describes the Invercargill club’s atmosphere as much more relaxed.

The club’s expansive convention centre is popular for weddings and functions. Sliding partitions allow the club to cater for small to very large groups, and a range of venue hire fees reflects this.

“We’ve got weddings already booked for 2015.

The space we have and the cost to hire make it extremely affordable for weddings. I think this is why it has become so popular.”

The club’s location on Esk St provides easy access from the centre of Invercargill’s central business district.

While Kevin seldom pours a beer these days, he makes a point of socialising with members, and runs one of the membership draws on Thursday evenings.

“It’s good to have the restaurant accessible to non-members,” says Kevin. “It works really well given the layout of the building and it is a way for non-members to see the facilities we have to offer and, we hope, consider joining the club as full members.”

Activities galore at Papakura Club Sue Russell An array of activity on offer at Papakura Club encourages members to get active, get involved and enjoy one another’s company.

The 67-year-old club is full of life, and Betty Ormsby, secretary/manager for the past two years, says it is poised to grow.

“We’re really keen on attracting younger members in the 18 to 30-year-old bracket and introduce them to the many benefits of club life,” she says.

The club has 10 sporting sections, including golf, darts, snooker and 8 ball, indoor bowls, euchre, fishing and table tennis. More unusually there’s a pigeon racing section that has been alive and well for more than 10 years. Trivia and housie nights are run fortnightly on Tuesday evenings and an active mah jong group meets on Thursday afternoons.

The Papakura Club has its own outdoor bowling green, with eight rinks. Recent refurbishment of the green has it in tip-top condition – and of sufficient standard to host Counties tournaments again.

An annual charity bowls fundraiser in aid of the local hospice is a popular event amongst indoor bowlers in the district, running from the first week in May through to the last week in August. This year PHOTO; Papakura Club sports bar staff Erina and Ariana got their hands on the Ranfurly Shield when it was taken on tour of the Counties rugby area.

Counties won the shield from Hawke’s Bay and retained it for the rest of the season.

Waiuku club community hub Sue Russell Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club general manager Katrina Barnett reckons the club feels like the hub of the small town. 20 kilometres, which is 20 kiliometres of Pukekohe in South Auckland.

“I like to think it is a place to come and enjoy yourselves, have a drink and meal...a club to be proud of,” she says.

Membership is just shy of 1300 and a steady flow of recruits continues to join regularly – something Katrina says is a good thing given that the membership, as with many clubs of this nature, is ageing somewhat.

To encourage people to join, the Waiuku Club operates a tiered subscription structure. Those over 65 pay $28.80, as do the youngest members (aged from 18 to 21), while those in between pay $75.50.

The club‘s 12 staff help keep the place ticking over and a new contract caterer is settling in well, says Katrina.

Waiuku Club promotes itself as a family oriented club with a safe environment, she says.

“Mum and Dad can enjoy a drink knowing the children are very welcome because we feel that if you want to promote a club as really the hub of the community, then the family-friendly approach is essential.”

The price of drinks is “very competitive”, according to Katrina and, with a full TAB facility as well as a TAB pod, the punters are very well served.

At the time Katrina spoke to Interclub, she was right in the middle of overseeing a revamping of the gaming room, which houses 18 pokie machines.

There are lots of options as well for members who want to be involved in the wide variety of subsections the club has to offer. The choice includes indoor and outdoor bowls, darts and snooker, 8 ball, mah jong, euchre, fishing, golf.

The Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club is also home to a number of community-based groups, such as the Waiuku Country Music Club, the Senior Citizens Club and the Waiuku RSA. Katrina and her staff are looking forward to meeting visitors passing through or holidaying in the area over the holiday period.

“We are keen to support and engage with our local community,” says Betty Ormsby. “The club offers and encourages local non-profit groups such as Neighbourhood Watch, Lions and Kiwanis by offering them the use of our facilities for meetings or conferences at no charge.”

Cheery the Clown arrives on stilts much to the delight of children, creates balloon animals and does a magic show. There is plenty of space for the children to have three-legged and egg-and-spoon races, and to see who can throw the gumboot the furthest.

Kamo members shine at club tournaments Kelly Deeks

Fishing and table tennis have a strong following at the Kamo Club in Whangarei. The club took out the national title at the Clubs NZ Fishing Tournament in Whangaroa (top). Club members also took out the A grade and D Grade titles at the Clubs NZ North Island Table Tennis Tournament (bottom).

The Kamo Club, in Whangarei, is looking forward to an entertaining festive season with a line-up of bands and musicians set to regale members over the Christmas and New Year period.

The Kamo Club is already fully booked for festive functions, although club vice-president John Nuttall says a downturn in the local economy has meant that the functions are not as ‘full on’ as they were last year.

“But there’s still plenty of stuff happening,” he says.

On Christmas Eve Kamo Club plays host to rock and roll pianist Gerry Lee. A regular performer at the Kamo Club, Gerry Lee plays a fully sequenced sound show with styles ranging from quiet background music, to music which makes people get up and shake their tail feathers.

On New Year’s Eve country rock band Kiwi Express will be entertaining at the club and there be with opportunities for members to get up and show off their line-dancing and rock-and-roll dancing capabilities.

There will also be a special menu available and lucky draws during the night.

The Kamo Club has recently held its adjuncts awards night, and John Nuttall says it has been a good year for sporting achievements with a lot of the key performers claiming awards again.

He says the club’s adjuncts and activities are a huge strength.

There’s still plenty of stuff happening.

“It’s what fills the place up,” he says.

The Kamo Club has a strong table tennis contingent and the club has been a regular hosts of the Clubs New Zealand North Island table tennis tournament.

It played host to the tournament again in June this year and with about 30 Kamo Club members playing table tennis, they took out the A grade titles and D grade sections.

John Nuttall says table tennis has always been a strong adjunct at the Kamo Club right through the club’s 70-year history.

Fishing is another strong adjunct.

This year they mustered up a large team to enter the Clubs New Zealand fishing tournament, which was hosted and run by the Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club.

The Kamo crew took out the national title as well as a number of other titles, including the trophy for the winning team. Fishing will soon be gearing up for the annual Christmas fishing sweep.

The Kamo Club has completed some renovations this year, with the office and foyer areas undergoing a makeover, and the gaming room being extended to make way for four new gaming machines.

Glen Eden RSA gears up for frantic festive season with special vets party Jo Bailey Glen Eden RSA has kicked off a packed festive social programme with a very special Christmas veterans‘ party.

This annual event sees the West Auckland club treat its veterans and their partners or widows to a Christmas buffet, drinks, a gift, Countdown voucher and entertainment from Hamilton singer Glenn Carley.

“We love to make a fuss of our veterans and this event helps us to remember exactly what the RSA stands for,” says assistant manager Nicole Busher.

The Glen Eden team are also gearing up for the children’s Christmas party and sports sections’ prizegiving dinner and Dance (both on December 7), followed by the Big West Christmas dance party on December 14.

There will be spot prizes, and prizes for the best dressed guests at the event, with the club’s Pacific Bar Bistro offering its Christmas menu.

Entertainment will be provided by rock covers bank TopZZGun, which has a strong local following.

“This is the first time we’ve held a Christmas party of this size, and hoping to see plenty of people from our community including local businesses,” says Nicole. It should be a great night.”

The club is also running a lunch buffet on Christmas Day, and has a late licenxe until 1am for its annual New Year’s Eve Party.

At Labour weekend the club hosted more than 92 players at the National Servicemen’s darts competition.

“The organisation involved was huge but it was definitely a successful event,” says Nicolwe Busher.

“Next Easter we’re also hosting the Inter9 Glendale Rd,

dominion darts event between New Zealand and Australian servicemen.

“It’s quite an achievement to be able to host an event of this scale.”

Nicole says four members of the Glen Eden’s youth section are looking forward to going to Sydney next April.

“They will be part of a group of around 30 young RSA members from Auckland attending a reciprocal tour that has been running between New South Wales and Auckland clubs for 40 years.” the Glen Eden RSA is proud of its facilities that include the bar, bistro, pool and snooker tables, and 12 state-of-the-art gaming machines, she says.

Renovation improves club layout Kelly Deeks The Birkenhead Bowling Club is continuing its progressive approach to providing for its members.

The latest move has been a renovation aimed at updating its two bars and improving the layout of the club.

The renovation will also increase the size of the club’s bowls shop, which has been open just over two years and, according to club president Greg Utting, is going from strength to strength, with sales increasing every month.

Utting says Bowls Shop Birkenhead has been a good add-on for the club, open seven days a week and also on line, providing bowls, clothing, footwear, and all the accessories needed for a game of bowls.

The shop carries apparel and accessories from leading suppliers, including the Comfitpro brand of bags, shoes, wet weather gear, and accessories.

The shop is also the local agent for the latest AeroBowls. AeroBowls are manufactured in Sydney and the latest high-precision robotic equipment is available. Every set of AeroBowls of the same model is guaranteed to be the same.

Bowls Shop Birkenhead offers trial bowls to try before you buy, a range of about 30 colours and the opportunity to customise bowls with names and logos.

Technology updates seen as attraction for younger set at Bays Karen Phelps Younger members are welcome at the Bays Club, which is focusing on reaching out to the next generation with a number of initiatives including entertainment options to appeal to this age group, says club manager Dave Hewitson.

Recognising that technology is playing an increasingly important part in how both current and younger members communicate, the club has upgraded its website (www.baysclub.co.nz) and has a growing presence on Facebook.

“People can now easily find out what the club offers and what events are coming up. It’s about

looking after the membership and giving them what the modern world offers – choices,” says Hewitson.

The club is also seeking to publicise what it can offer the business market as the venue is ideal for lunches and events.

Renovations of the club are in the pipeline, with the aim of improving the club ambience to encourage businesses to use the venue.

Hewitson hopes an offshoot of these initiatives will be increased membership as more people recognise what the club has to offer.

Situated just metres from the ocean, the Bays Club has around 1700 members. Not surprisingly, membership is growing as more people come to realise the price advantages of belonging.

“We’re a lot cheaper than most outside places and we have a stunning facility with great views over the Hauraki Gulf,” says Dave.

“People are realising that the club is the perfect place to hang out if they want to have a good time for a great price.”

The club restaurant opens on Mondays for lunch, and for full service from Tuesday to Sunday. There special each day.

Members in the 60-plus age group can choose the meal special of $12, two courses for $13.50, or three courses for $15.50.

There’s a fine line between thriving and surviving We’re often told (more often than many of us would like) that we’ve got to prepare for retirement, that we’ve got to invest wisely or lovingly nurture a growing nest-egg so that we can sit back and enjoy every moment when the time comes that we’re not traipsing off to work every day. So, is it really that simple? And should our eventual retirement be the sole motivation for us seeking to extract the best value from our financial resources. KAREN PHELPS peeks into a world where straightforward answers seem decidedly scarce.

It has never been easy to retire, but it has just got a whole lot harder for many of us. Rising costs, fallout from the global financial crisis, and, arguably, inadequate pensions are some of the challenges facing many as they enter their golden years.

So how do you thrive rather than struggle to survive as you hit retirement? Many experts estimate you will need, at least initially, 70-80% of your preretirement income to retire comfortably.

For many people, this means spending what you have managed to accumulate during your lifetime, also known as “decumulation”, will be the key.

According to financial writer Diana Clement, the trouble is that those who retire with healthy retirement

savings have usually saved hard to obtain them and, after a lifetime of being careful, it can be difficult to change ways and spend some of that money. You need to learn to spend wisely while still enjoying the fruits of your labour.

Financial adviser Lisa Dudson, from Acumen, says decumulation needs to be done in a controlled way to ensure you are spending wisely and your money will last for your lifetime. The key is adequate management of the savings and assets you have accumulated.

But how do you know how long you are going to live, how quickly you can spend, or what unexpected events might occur that will affect your finances?

This is where a good financial planner (as opposed to a financial adviser, who offers advice and then points you to the correct people for further assistance) can help you to form a decumulation plan.

“This is a plan that allows you to map out your spending so that you don’t hang on to your capital unnecessarily, but still have some left should you live to become an octogenarian, nonagenarian, or centenarian,” says Clement.

Dudson stresses that retirement planning is a very individual exercise and can depend on a variety of factors such as health and personality type.

The are three key questions to ask are: • How much money will I need to live comfortably in retirement?

• How can I make my money last?

• How can I maximise my income?

Dudson is a big fan of reverse annuity mortgages (“a fantastic tool in so many circumstances”), where a financial company lends you money borrowed against your house and the debt builds up, and is generally repaid only once the house is sold.

Her key advice for those on the other side of retirement: “Pay attention – see where your money is going. Join KiwiSaver. Stay away from consumer debt. Pay off your mortgage as soon as you can.

Think about the future even if it seems far away.

Remember that retirement saving is small steps over a long period .

Get your head round ‘decumulation’ • A financial planner can assist you in putting together a ‘decumulation’ plan to suit your circumstances.

• The first step is to take account of the assets and savings you have. This may include a freehold home, investment properties, savings, shares and term deposits.

• Do a budget to estimate the amount of money you need to live on each week. Take inflation into account.

• Draw up a plan so that you have a regular income to match your weekly needs.

• People in or near retirement usually prefer to reduce their risk profile, but at the same time, you don’t want your money to be in a safe but low-earning investment that offers little immediate benefit.

• A good plan will usually involve a diversified portfolio of investments.

• Remember that your investment needs can change over time. For example, you might find that fees are too high, your investments are too risky, or your investments no longer suit your lifestyle or objectives. Do regular check-ups to ensure your ‘decumulation’ plan is working for you.

Getting ready for the big change – top tips Start early Even though it’s tempting to put it off, the earlier you start saving, the better it will be for you Remember it’s not just about how much money you can put away – the sooner you start, the more time you will have for your savings to grow naturally through interest.

Join KiwiSaver Saving can be challenging, and there’s always the temptation to spend everything you earn. If you are employed, joining KiwiSaver is a smart move because of the government and employer contributions.

Invest KiwiSaver and bank interest alone will most likely not give you the retirement you desire. While you don’t want to plunge your money into risky

investments, you also don’t want to invest too conservatively or growth might not keep ahead of inflation. The services of a financial adviser could be money well spent.

Diversity Otherwise known as “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”. Investments can and do go wrong. Even the safest can have pitfalls – just ask any property investor who was involved in the Christchurch housing market.

Buy a house Living in a mortgage-free house will take huge stress off you in retirement . You won’t have to worry about escalating rent payments and you will have security in owning your own home. If you travel, you can use your house as a swap, or rent it out while you are away.

Plan Retirement requires planning well in advance.

Consider engaging a professional financial adviser or planner to ensure your objectives at retirement will be met.

Financial writer Diana Clement, speaking from a personal point of view, says: “I would create a financial plan for retirement, which included a stocktake of my assets and income, a budget that would change as I aged, and a detailed ‘decumulation’ or ‘spend down’ analysis of my capital to ensure it lasted for as long as I needed to spend more than New Zealand Superannuation.

“The older retirees get, the less they tend to spend, and they don’t always need their capital to last as long as they do. I feel strongly that people

And financial adviser Lisa Dudson, also speaking from a personal viewpoint: “My plan is to work long term, but cut down my hours because I love what I do. My goal would be to focus on working less now and have more moderation. I’ll always keep a diversified portfolio but I plan to use up my capital – why would I want to leave it to someone else? Even if I had children, I think you put in the time and effort when they are young to making them good with money so that they can set themselves up.”

Over-60s get together in Marlborough LYNN HARTLEY reports on a trip by a New Plymouth Club group to an over-60s gettogether at the Clubs of Marlborough in August. It was very much a preview expedition for the Taranakians as the New Plymouth Club will host the event next year.

We arrived at the Interislander ferry terminal in Wellington at 11.30am – plenty of time before we sailed at 1pm. The service was good and vehicles were provided for those unable to walk as it was quite a climb to the deck at the entrance.

After a calm crossing we reached the Middle Park Motel in Blenheim about 5.15pm. Host Mandy Coburn was very helpful in sorting out our rooms.

There is a shopping mall across the road from the motel, with a supermarket, chemist, cafe and garden centre. It’s a 30-40 minute walk to the middle of Blenheim.

The get-together opened at 11am, with games starting after lunch – cards, pool and indoor bowls.

Our sole winner was Maurice at cards, but we enjoyed the company of other teams. Play wound up with prizegiving at 4.30pm, followed by a meal and entertainment and dancing.

Next day it was back to the club for a 9.45am start to get to The Vines Village and Chocolate Factory, and then the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre (an excellent museum and worth the visit).

We returned to the club for the formal closing of the Get Together, which will be held in New Plymouth next year. The afternoon was free – lots of walking and talking.

The upshot was a trip to the Brayshaw Heritage Park Museum (a very enjoyable place which took us through the history of winemaking in Marlborough), then a gem shop, the Vintage Car Club and Vintage Farm Machinery exhibition, and a heritage home that has been moved and is being restored.

Then it was over to Picton and the Edwin Fox Maritime Museum. The Edwin Fox has been preserved so that people can see how their forebears travelled to the New World. It’s amazing that any of the people arrived from across the world in the conditions they had to endure.

We all met at the Eco World to see the feeding, and it was informative to see the tuataras and learn about their behaviour and their life-span. The keeper brought out a young tuatara for us to touch.

He warned us not touch anywhere near the mouth as the tuatara’s jaws are very strong – the tuatara had once clamped onto his finger, breaking it in two places and not letting go for an hour.

We also learnt a lot about crayfish – two types; they change their skin at least twice a year; grow a new outer shell before they sliver out of the old skin; the new shell takes a few days to harden.

Next it was off to feed the fish. A stingray was swimming around and we saw it take a fish from the

keeper’s hand. We also saw a little blue penguin (it was wild and was being fed so that it could return into the wild. Hormones and the urge to breed will drive that move.

The aquarium is used to rescue penguins found in the Marlborough Sounds. It was an interesting place and the keepers explain everything in everyday language.

On the Friday we headed through Havelock to Canvastown where there is a cafe and some short walks, toilets, and a camping ground. It’s a very pleasant and quiet place. We returned to the Havelock marina for lunch, then on to Hunters Wines for wine tasting (a selection of six wines, which came with an explanation.

Artist Clary Neame has his gallery there and we were able to see through this. Most of us were outside waiting for the bus to be opened when the earthquake hit – very frightening as there was nowhere to go and the bus was moving about. There was also a car parked near where we were standing.

When we got back to the motel about 3pm, the supermarket across the road had closed for an hour or more so that they could clean up after the earthquake.

The New Plymouth group got together in John Burkett and Gaele Johnston’s unit for food and drink, and a sing-a-long ready for the journey home..

We left Blenheim at 9.30am, had an uneventful return ferry crossing, and we were out of Wellington quickly. We stopped at the Wanganui RSA for tea and arrrived in New Plymouth at 9pm.

A week of southern sights and sites BARRY MOULD recounts a Papanui Club travel section trip to the West Coast and Queenstown from September 9-14 Monday, September 9: Twenty-three members left the Papanui Club with Ron Sheppard, of Advance Strathmore Coachlines, and travelled through Springfield and past Lake Lyndon with the snow glistening on the mountain tops as we passed through the tussock covered foothills.

A short stop at Arthur’s Pass, then over the top and down the viaduct and through the lush green fields (cattle country) in the Taramakau valley, the weather deteriorating slightly with scotch mist in places. Lunch at Hokitika and the sun shining again, a few people made purchases at the retail outlets.

Wending our way south through that lovely yellow flowering weed (gorse) the early settlers brought with them and more impressive native bush in one of the many state forests on the Coast. Short stop at Lake Ianthe to take in the views. Those red cones seen in numerous quantities in Christchurch must have multiplied as their offspring appear in many places on West Coast roads.

At Fox Glacier, we were accommodated at the Mount Cook View Motel; we were made welcome by host Stephanie Morgan and had a very comfortable stay. And, yes, we did see Mt Cook. In the evening we partook of some great meals at Cafe Neve, but sadly there was no whitebait available.

Tuesday, September 10: Overnight rain and we were soon on the road again through more bushclad hills and lush green farmland, the rain getting heavier and obscuring the views but we did see many waterfalls. A short stop at Haast, which expanded from a Ministry of Works camp to a construction village when the Haast Pass road was formed (the final Haast to Paringa section opened in 1965). We turned inland and followed the Haast River with gigantic boulders strewn along the gorge, a quick photo stop in the pouring rain at the Gates of Haast Bridge, constructed in 1962.

We crossed the top of the pass (563 metres) and followed the Makarora River, which feeds into the north end of Lake Wanaka, then over a saddle (The Neck) to follow the west side of Lake Hawea, and into Wanaka for lunch. Still raining, with lightning and thunder overhead.

We followed alongside the mighty Clutha River on the west side of Lake Dunstan. A stop at Mrs Jones’s fruit shop and through the rugged Kawarau Gorge, past the Roaring Meg Power Station (commissioned in 1936), and numerous wineries in the Gibbston Valley, Lake Hayes and, to the accompaniment of more lightning and thunder, arrived at our accommodation for the next three nights, the Shotover Lodge, on the Queenstown-Arrowtown road. We dined at the Queenstown Speights Ale House and were treated to a delightful range of meals. Built as the Queenstown council chamber in 1880, the building has been re-developed. A narrow vault where the town records were stored has been converted into an part of the dining area.

Wednesday, September 11: After watching the America’s Cup and seeing the town, we were at the waterfront at 2pm to board the Million Dollar Cruise Co’s Ngaroto under the control of Capt Wayne Perkins who told us about the history of the district during the trip around Lake Wakatipu’s Frankton Arm. The north-facing houses on the southern shores are 90% lived in, and land can cost 1$million-plus. A 1000 sq m floor area place, with additional 18-car garaging, was valued at $6.7m.

The snow-covered Remarkables (2343m) were just that, remarkable, and created a great backdrop for photos on the bow of the boat. We saw the latest

hotel in the area, The Hilton, near the lake outlet, and some of the birdlife. Wakatipu is New Zealand’s longest lake and the third largest; at a depth of 400 metres, the lake floor is 100m below sea level.

The population of Queenstown averages 16,000, most of whom live further afield; it’s the tourists who keep Queenstown alive – an estimated 1.8 million out-of- towners a year. We dined at the PRIME Waterfront Restaurant and Bar, which has panoramic views of the lake and mountains.

Thursday, September 12: Awoke to rain intermingled with snow flurries, but an hour later it was blue skies and sunshine. Off to Arrowtown, a historic gold mining town that had a population of over 7000 during the gold-rush era. Many well preserved buildings date from this time; the present population is around 2200.

We then ventured around Lake Hayes to Frankton for lunch and some “normal” shops. Frankton, a suburb of Queenstown near the Lake Wakatipu outlet, is where the Queenstown people do their shopping (at the Remarkables Park Town Centre).

After rest and recuperation, we were out for our

evening meal, which involvef a gondola ride to the Skyline Restaurant, 450m above Queenstown. The buffet was food to die for, with wonderful panoramic views of lake and mountain scenery.

Friday, September 13: We left Queesnmtown at 10am (after the Americas Cup races) and went, via Arrowtown, to A J Hackett Bungy’s new visitor centre at the Kawarau River. Well worth the time for a visit. We stocked up on fruit and nuts at Mrs Jones’s again, had lunch at Tarras (the home of Shrek ) and then through the Lindas Valley farming area and over the tussock hills of the Lindas Pass to Omarama.

After a visit to the museum etc, it was on to Twizel for an overnight stop at the Colonial Motels. We dined at the Twizel Combined Services Club and some had a win at the raffles.

Saturday, September 14: A beautiful, sunny morning, so off to Mt Cook. Lake Pukaki was a beautiful turquoise blue, the snow topped mountains stood out in all their splendour, with a light skiff of cloud at the top of Cook. The visitor centre has many exhibits relating to the national park’s mountains, flora and fauna, climbers and their clothing and equipment.

A lunch stop at Tekapo, then home – witnessing on the way the uprooted trees and damaged irrigators caused by the strong northwesterly winds four days earlier.

On arriving back at the Club, there was a vote of thanks to Ron Sheppard for his organisation of another most enjoyable trip.

CLUB TRAVEL – TIMARU TOWN & COUNTRY CLUB

A Timaru Town and Country Club travel section group took a tour of Hurunui Village on their way to Hanmer Springs. The camera was snapping away (above and below). The camera also caught them at lunch (bottom) later in the trip.

Timaruvians take a peek further north Wine, llamas, scones and hot pools. Just some of the attractions the Timaru Town and Country Club took in on a four-day trip by the club’s travel section.

Around 25 members made the trip over the weekend of September 20-23.

They started with a stop-off in Ashburton for morning tea and a touch of craft shopping at the local stores. A bit further into the journey, after a bite of lunch at Amberley, the group took a tour of Hurunui Village, a family-owned boutique vineyard.

The tour included a visit to the wine cave, the vineyard and the mud-brick cottages that form part of the luxury accommodation. Afternoon tea followed at the Blacksmith’s Cafe on the site – apparently, gigantic scones, cream and jam went down a treat.

By that night, the group had reached its destination, Hanmer Springs, where they stayed at the very comfortable Alpine Lodge Motel right opposite the thermal pools. After dining at the lodge everyone was free to explore Hanmer by night.

Next day the group wiled away the hours in the natural spring waters of the thermal pools before a game of mini-golf at A-Maze-N-Golf where you can play the gold-rush-themed course or solve the mystery of the Lost Temple.

The following morning was flexible for people to explore Hanmer, take a quiet mountain walk, another session at the pool, or a quiet bite in a restaurant.

In the afternoon there was a group visit to Wai Ariki Farmpark where the travellers got up close and personal feeding farm animals, which included a Tibetan yak, chinchillas, guinea pigs and alpacas.

On Monday it was time to head home, with a stop at Culverden for lunch followed by a spot of retail therapy at The Hub Hornby (Christchurch) while others popped into the Hornby Working Men’s Club.

The Timaru Town and Country travel section,

which has been going strong for more than 25 years, now has around 90 members including, five life members.

Section committee member and past president John Gascoigne says that, typically, there is an event every couple of months. The group also tackles longer trips, sometimes up to 10 days, and day trips.

A trip to Rarotonga is in the planning stages.

The committee comes up with the ideas for trips at monthly meetings led by new president Ann Thomson, who took over the position in August.

“A lot of it is the good company,” says john. “You get a lot of adventurous people who want to see new places.

“The great thing about the group is that we go together, but there are also opportunities for us to do things on our own if we want to. It’s about encouraging club members to get out and explore their own country.”
