It was September 1946, and Elsa Cresswell, Nancy Hammond and Ellen Jarvis got dressed up for a Queen Carnival fundraising event. They were young, single and part of a massive drive to raise money to extend the Blenheim RSA to cope with returning soldiers from World War 2.

Such events were common in those times, and many RSAs were involved in organising them as a community event, as a fundraiser, or as a combination of both.

Last September, the same trio – all now in their 90s – again headed out together, this time to the Age Concern Marlborough seniors’ dance, themed Puttin’ On The Ritz, at the Clubs of Marlborough complex.

They were escorted by three young men from the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

“For all three of them to be alive and active in the community is pretty good,” says dance organiser Ken Ham.”We made a real fuss of them.” says Elsa Cresswell agrees: “It’s unusual that all three of us were all here and able to go.”

She remembers the queen carnival at His Majesty’s Theatre; all three of them were ‘queens’ of a fundraising committee. Nancy, queen of the sports committee, was named overall queen as her group raised the most money.

Elsa recalls the fundraising drive as being “very busy”.

“When it was all over I had two days in bed. There were no computers and everything was done by hand. It was quite a big undertaking. We sold raffle tickets for threepence a ticket. It took a long time to raise the money. We did all sorts of fundraising

This year’s Age Concern event was based on “traditional or old-time dancing, and music of the years more senior people might enjoy”, says Ken Ham: “It’s a very heavily subsidised community event with the help of sponsors.”

Also on the 2016 dance floor was 97-year-old former dancer Olive Sutherland-Waite. She was a competitive ballroom dancer in Britain when she was in her 30s, and has been to all seven Age Concern Marlborough senior dances.

While she does not dance much these days, she loves soaking up the atmosphere and dressing for the occasion.

Model ships bring old stories back to life Kelly Deeks Geoff Hill has always loved sailing ships and the incredible feats achieved with them in an era now gone. The history and romance behind some of the world’s most recognised sailing ships has prompted the Christchurch enthusiast to bring highly crafted model ships into New Zealand.

He came across these durably constructed models, which are true representations of the famous craft they depict, through a business contact in China, and started to import models with a New Zealand link.

There’s HMS Endeavour, the British Royal Navy research vessel that Lt James Cook commanded on his first voyage of discovery to Australia and New Zealand from 1769 to 1771, and Endurance, the three-masted barquentine that was crushed by ice when Sir Ernest Shackleton sailed for the Antarctic on the 1914 Imperial Trans-American Expedition after stopping in Christchurch for supplies. And HMS Bounty, the small merchant vessel bought by the Royal Navy and sent in 1787 for a botanical mission to the Pacific Ocean under the command of William Bligh. It was burned on Pitcairn Island by the mutineers led by Lt Fletcher Christian.

Increasing interest in the models and the many New Zealanders with a European connection encouraged Geoff to bring in a wider range of models, including HMS Victory, the 104-gun, firstrate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched in 1765 and best known as Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Now the flagship of the First Sea Lord, the Victory is the world’s oldest naval ship still in commission.

Geoff Hill has installed model ships into commercial offices, restaurants, and hotels, as well the houses as for the die-hard fans.

“With some models up to 1.3 metres long, they take up a bit of room, and not everyone can display them in their lounge. They have to be stored in a display cabinet, which we can provide, as the intricate designs can trap dust.”

He has expanded into cruise ships, art deco speed boats, and Chinese junks, and a variety of ancient sailing ships with stories and history dating to the second century. Many are still in use.

His Chinese supplier will also make a model of any ship or boat as long as accurate measurements and pictures are provided. Geoff says any model ship will cost a few hundred dollars, but people still appreciate a finely crafted, amazing ornament – especially with a story and a bit of romance attached.

The reality is that managers cannot be expected to know everything about all of their areas of responsibility.

How to catch a thief: Easiest job in the world – yeah right When I started working with clubs, I thought a club manager’s job was the easiest in the world. How my thoughts have changed.

The things managers have to deal with is amazing.

They are basically the hands-on chief executive officer of a complex business and if they get things wrong, the consequences can be very expensive – and it’s the local community that suffers.

I also know that club managers need to be experts in many areas. Part diplomat when handling stroppy members, part employment lawyer when dealing with staff issues, part accountant to try the keep the books straight, part detective to find out who has their hand in the till when funds go missing, part handyman when the coffee machine breaks down, part politician (heavens forbid) when liaising with the committee, and so it goes on.

These are all critical areas, but keeping good records is a must if you are to keep the thieves at bay. Essentially, it comes down to having three things: • A good accounting system that not only records the club’s finances but protects the club against theft.

• A system audit at least once every three years to make sure the club’s systems are up with the times – and the new ways thieves steal!

• A forensic audit done as soon as fraud is suspected. There is a serious risk in waiting, not only because the level of theft may increase, but because any act of negligence may void a club’s insurance cover.

‘Cowboy’ targets next generation Sue Russell Regular trips to the chiropractor are very much part of maintaining world-class form for New Zealand darts champion Mark (The Cowboy’) McGrath.

When Interclub spoke with Mark, he had just returned from a session to sort out a niggly shoulder blade, one of the occupational hazards that comes hours and hours of top-level competition darts – national and Clubs NZ events, and the world’s professional stage.

“When you are throwing darts all day and into the evening as I do in tournaments, it puts a lot of strain on your back, arms and shoulders. So, it is important to make sure I look after myself,” says Mark, who at Porurua in early March added the Clubs NZ North Island title to his CV. Humble and quietly spoken, he has competed extensively in world-championship events. He is originally from England; the family moved to New Zealand in 1981 with Mark returning to his birth country to live for five years in 2000.

“I’ve been playing darts as long as I can remember. Dad was a keen player. We used to play King of the House. Back in England darts is very popular and the second most-viewed sport on TV.” He describes it as mentally engaging and challenging, and presenting curious opposites.

“When you throw a dart, it is about being aggressive in the way you throw while, at the same time, your whole body and mind has to be relaxed.

You have to learn how to count, how to give yourself every opportunity to win the game.”

“You grow with the game,” he says. “Acquiring the skill-set is one thing, but acquiring the knowledge of when to throw a number comes only through experience.”

He has since competed on both worldchampionship stages – the Professional Darts Corporation at the famous Alley Palley in 2015, and the BDO World Darts at the home of darts, Lakeside Frimley Green, in 2017. He has also played in the Winmau World Masters (2002, 2003, 2004 and 2016). He has qualified to go back to the Winmau World Masters in England next November.

Meanwhile he is focusing on helping develop a youth academy in New Zealand. Along with playing, coaching and encouraging the next generation occupies a large chunk of his time.

“We have developed Mad on Darts with 11 tournaments a year. And to help build up grassrootslevel darts here, we’re in the process of organising the Youth Academy where I will help bring a younger following to the game, working alongside my sponsors.”

It was with great pleasure and pride that I was able to present my first report as president of this fantastic association to more than 220 delegates and managers from 80 member clubs at the 2017 conference and annual meeting.

The nature of our business means there will always be challenges and change, but my view is that well-planned changes with clear goals agreed by all will set us on the right path. And we have certainly seen evidence of this over the past year.

Financially, I believe we are going well with a profit achieved in the year just gone, while at the same time providing for the needs of our clubs.

I am also pleased to see that Clubs New Zealand Insurance is continuing to tick along well. This is not surprising as it is a fantastic scheme and its cover of clubs is second to none.

There are, of course, cheaper covers available, but clubs need to be aware they do not offer the protection level of Clubs New Zealand Insurance.

If your club has taken or is considering taking a cheaper option, you may be putting your club at higher risk.

Gore responds to challenge of popularity Peter Owens Three years ago the Gore RSA executive realised the club, a favoured social centre for the Eastern Southland district with a rapidly expanding membership, was becoming a victim of its own popularity.

The primary problem was space. so, the decision was made to expand and upgrade the facilities to accommodate growing membership.

Design plans were completed in May 2015 and tenders for the work closed at the end of August 2015. In September, it was announced that Gorebased Jones and Cooper Ltd had been awarded the tender. The estimated cost was $1.15 million. including the engagement of a project manager.

This was a significant sum for a non-commercial organisation but the club took it in its stride. At a

special general meeting in October 2015, members overwhelmingly resolved to adopt a plan through which the club would provide $650,000 from its reserves, and the $500,000 balance would be borrowed through a secured mortgage from the ASB Bank.

The appropriate resource consents from the Gore District Council were soon granted and work began late January 2016. Despite an early threeweek delay through weather and drainage problems, construction had advanced rapidly by March, and the new “poppy feature wall” had been completed. This stamped the identity of the RSA on the extension.

The roof was on by early April and, in May, a new indoor bowls floor was laid in the new building. The executive had completed plans for the installation of six snooker tables, which enables the club to host major tournaments.

May also saw the installation of a carefully positioned light that at night illuminated the red poppy on the feature wall. Older club members, in particular, welcomed this as a reminder of for what the RSA stands for.

During June the kitchen was extended and new bar facilities were installed to serve the function and games rooms.

Both the RSA and the contractor, Jones and Cooper, were proud that the project came in under the estimated budget.

The money saved was used to finance the purchase and laying of new carpet in the restaurant area, and to provide extra seating for members.

Membership has now topped 2200.

Most days when he’s at home, Mark will throw a dart for two or three hours: “I use it as my relaxation.

Darts tournaments are intense, playing from early morning through to the evening, and it’s a big stepup to be able to concentrate for that length of time.”

Murray completes the full circle Karen Phelps The Waitara District Services & Citizens’ Club is set to double the capacity of its Raleigh restaurant to seat 200 people. The extension is due to be completed by end of April.

But never fear – Raleigh is remaining fully operational and open for lunch (11.30am-2pm) and dinner (5.30pm-8.30pm) Tuesday to Sunday right through the building process.

Club secretary-manager Murray Allan says the restaurant expansion is a sign of the club’s growing membership, which has topped 800 – with more signing up by the week.

The club has a main lounge bar, plus bars in the functions room and restaurant. The restaurant serves a variety of fare – grilled scotch fillet on creamy potato mash, and roast meal of the day) remain firm favourites, and are complemented by offerings such as curry, pesto and parmesan fettuccine, and chicken and basil crepes.

Chef Michael Falsted has been operating the restaurant for more than six years, and has developed a mix of a la carte dining and bar meals. it also caters to functions and events , such as weddings, birthdays etc, at the clubrooms.

A gaming room is equipped with 18 machines, and the club has a TAB with two pods plus terminal.

Flat-screen TVs are popular during sporting events and there is also an outdoor barbecue area for members to enjoy in warmer months.

fishing competition – more than 400 anglers entered this year and the heaviest snapper weighed in at eight kilograms.

A wild-boar hunt is held each Queen’s Birthday weekend, with participants free to hunt where they please before heading back to the club for a weighin.

Club adjuncts include outdoor bowls, indoor bowls, darts, pool, golf and an over-60s group.

Courtesy vans are available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 3.30pm until closing.

The Waitara District & Services Club had its beginnings in 1975 when the local RSA gifted the building and land over to the club. The two operate from the same premises.

Murray says the combination works well, generating a friendly atmosphere that patrons appreciate.

After being secretary manager for 30 years and being made a life member recently, he has seen a lot of changes in the club.

He has overseen a huge increase in membership – the club had 40 members when he arrived. He has also overseen the setting-up of Raleigh.

So, he feels he has almost come full circle and sees it as fitting that he is due to hand over the reins this year.

“Somebody younger can come in and take the club into the next era,” he adds.

Popularity drives revamp Kelly Deeks An increasingly busy South Taranaki Club has completed a major kitchen refurbishment and extension of the club’s Caledonia Restaurant kitchen.

Club manager Raewyn Mitchell says this will enhance the restaurant’s capacity to cater with its growing popularity as more and more members take advantage of “quality meals and regular specials at great-value prices”.

“The busiest night we’ve had was 600 meals; on Thursday nights we can regularly have 400 people in for dinner. We do cater for them, but sometimes with extreme difficulty. Not everyone appreciates they may have to wait at times for their dinner to be served, as most of the diners are walk-in customers and this puts immense pressure on our resources.” .

The reconfigured kitchen will ease a lot of that pressure, she says. While the 100-seat dining area has remained the same, there are plans to extend the seating space to allow for extended dining and function options.

“We have extended the floor area of the new kitchen by taking some area from the adjoining boardroom and services areas,” Raewyn says.

The building process was reasonably simple and easy, she says. The restaurant closed for a week after Christmas, and local building firm Arthur Brown Construction worked every day.

Restaurant manager and chef Pam Watkins, who has been running the restaurant for two years, has seven staff on a roster system in the kitchen.

Caledonia is open from 6pm Wednesday to Sunday, and lunchtimes Wednesday to Saturday. A $10 roast-pork meal on offer at lunch and dinner every Wednesday has proved a drawcard for the club’s overall activities, says Raewyn.

Club membership continues to increase: “When we came to this Caledonia St site 20 years ago, we had just 700 members; today, we have more than 2100.”

New members have joined through recommendations from others, and over the past five years, there has been an influx of younger members, she says.

“They didn’t frequent the club because they thought it was more for the older age-group and a place for Mum and Dad to socialise. But nowadays they enjoy what we have to offer them. They enjoy coming here because they can play pool, snooker and darts, and enjoy a nice dinner.”

Three years ago the club bought a courtesy coach, which has proved a successful asset in helping bring members and guests safely to and from the club.

“Our slogan is ‘The place to be in South Taranaki’, and it’s something we are very passionate about,” Raewyn says.

Waitara T&C loses manager, but in good shape The Waitara Town and Country Club lost its manager and friend for 14 years when John Murphy died on Christmas Day 2016. Club members say he is greatly missed but not forgotten.

The club is on West Quay beside the Waitara River, and has walkways to the beach. Its Theatre Royal (on the old Royal Picture Theatre site) Restaurant can seat up to 70 people and is open from 6pm to 9pm on Friday and Saturday nights.

Bistro meals are available in the bar from 5.30pm to 7.30pm Wednesdays. The club is also open for lunches between 11am and 2pm on Fridays.

Groups of 15 or more can book for lunch on any day. A separate function room, seating up to 150, is available for weddings, conferences and functions.

An over-60s adjunct meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Other adjuncts include indoor bowls, outdoor bowls, darts, pool, fishing and golf. The club has pool tables (free), a TAB pod and 11 gaming machines. A large free carpark provides

easy access to the club, and people travelling in campervans are welcome to stay overnight at no cost. The club sponsors some community events.

Fox Hole part of RSA drive to open doors to the public The Wanganui RSA has a new café. ‘The Fox Hole’ complements the club’s successful Gallipoli Restaurant.

The focus of the Foxhole is on delivering coffee and other hot drinks, as well as a variety of sweet and savoury cabinet food including; wraps, rolls, sandwiches, slices and muffins.

The Fox Hole Cafe is open to the public and can be accessed by a new entrance running directly off St Hill St. The Fox Hole Café concept is part of a nationwide effort by the RSA to open up RSAs to the public.

The RSA is working to overcome the view of many people that the organisation is solely for ex-service people

Now, anyone who supports the RSA’s core principles of courage, compassion, camaraderie, and commitment can join the RSA. As an accompaniment to the restaurant, the cafe offers an increased range of food and non-alcohol beverage options through the day and into the evening.

Between the two venues, the RSA can cater for almost any business or private function. And, with the adjacent function room, numbers can run to up to 100 people.

The Fox Hole Cafe is open from 8.30am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday, and the Gallipoli Restaurant from 5.30pm Wednesday to Saturday.

Rodders join New Plymouth Club’s winning adjuncts The NP Rodders (hot rods) – the latest New Plymouth Club adjunct – has plenty to live up to. Over the last 12 months the club’s adjuncts have competed with distinction in Clubs NZ events, with several acquiring silverware. Some club members have represented New Zealand overseas..

The club has a strong connection with the local community, supporting high schools and charity groups. If done well, this can translate into new members and profits.

Five new committee members emerged from club elections last July. New general manager Peter Grey is proving a tireless worker. All of which provides a solid foundation for progress.

On August 20 last year, 750 people paid $30 per head to go to a non-stop, five-hour music event which raised $20,000 for Hospice Taranaki. Planning has begun for another huge challenge in 2019.

Schools and kindergartens host quiz nights at the club, and this has worked extremely well. The club can host events for up to 450 in private rooms or groups as small as 10 in one of four function rooms The children’s Christmas party in December was a big hit with the kids and grandparents, especially the Christmas presents, the food and a jolly old Santa.

As with most clubs, drink driving has had a huge effect on the New Plymouth Club’s financial bottom line. But as members have got used to their

It gives the feeling of playing beneath a starry sky, he says.

The area also has its own outdoor smoking zone with a roof for shelter and electronic louvres which can be adjusted to suit the weather.

The acoustics, sound system, air conditioning and heating system right through the club have also been improved.

It all adds up to a great experience for members, says Greg.

A series of initiatives has led to membership growing by 130-180 a month. You can join for $15 and membership is instant – within three minutes you can have a membership card. And if you pay your subscription on time, it reduces to $10 – which, says Greg, makes it a no-brainer for most locals to join.

Membership has risen from 1500 to more than 7000 since this scheme started, he says.

The club restaurant, TC’s, is next on the list for a revamp. It has three qualified chefs and can serve nearly 300 meals on a Monday night. That’s the result of another initiative – members are given a free meal when their birthday comes round, and can redeem it on a Monday night.

The restaurant has an a la carte menu and buffet, and bar snacks are available all day. Greg says the scotch fillet with potatoes cooked in duck fat is renowned locally and extremely popular.

The menu changes frequently. Dishes have included: pumpkin and mascarpone ravioli with olive oil; parmesan and rocket salad; smoked chicken salad with melon, feta, roasted pine-nuts and Greek

yoghurt dressing; sirloin steak on potato gratin with green beans and béarnaise sauce or aioli.

All meals are under $32. The $25 buffet offers two to three choices of roast meats, fresh vegetables, salads, and desserts such as crème brulee and traditional favourites, such as ice-cream sundaes.

TC’s also runs weekend specials, such as whitebait fritters and oysters.

The restaurant caters to functions in the club.

Rooms available for hire include the Tauhara Lounge (upstairs with lake views and bar facilities, and capable of handling up to 175 people), the Tongariro Lounge (downstairs and suited for up to 100 people); the Ruapehu Room (nexct to the restaurant for gatherings of up to 40); and the executive room (nearby and set up for business meetings of up to 12 people).

Greg says some of the rooms are flexible and can be opened up to create one large space.

Which has led to the club becoming a popular venue for weddings (ceremonies and receptions), anniversaries and conferences.

Seated meals can be provided for around 200 people and the club dresses rooms for special occasions. Facilities such as white boards and projectors are available.

The combination of “amazing facilities on offer and a firm focus on customer service” have seen the club thrive since it was formed in 1969.

“We take time to speak to members and visitors and really make sure they feel welcome and part of the club. That’s very important – people have to feel comfortable, happy and have a great time when they’re here. “it’s that friendly environment and the good people we have working here – some of them have been here as long as I have – who make the club a special place to be.”

Panmure Anzacs forge bonds Kelly Deeks Lisette Mill – who lives in the tiny township of Panmure in south-west Victoria, Australia – didn’t realise just what she was starting when she invited Mt Wellington Panmure (Auckland) RSA members to Anzac Day 2017 with their Aussie namesakes.

As the secretary of the Panmure Action Group, she wrote to Mt Wellington Panmure RSA president Leon Matthews, who showed her letter to the club’s padre, Maj Colin Burgess.

“The emphasis of Lisette’s letter was on us being Panmure in New Zealand,” says Colin. “We’ve got Ellerslie right next door, and Panmure in Australia also has Ellerslie right next to it as well. It was just too scary,” Colin says.

“Then she mentioned her grandfather, Fred Barwick, from Gisborne, and I nearly jumped out Colin Burgess speaking at an Anzac Day service. He says his father would have been ‘very encouraged’ by the growing Panmure connection.

The Panmure-Ellerslie connection was uncanny enough, but neither he nor Lisette could believe they had another connection.

Fred Barwick and Colin’s father, Fred Burgess, served together for the Wellington Mounted Rifles in Cairo and Palestine during World War 2; both eventually settled in Gisborne and joined the Gisborne RSA. Colin got straight back to Lisette, sent her a photo of her grandfather and grandmother celebrating at the Gisborne RSA, and accepted the invitation to Anzac Day. He will speak at the service in the larger town of Warrnambool.

“Further up Glen Innes there is a big campsite that returned men, their wives and their children were able to come to. It was opened up as a state housing system and the first lot of people who came into it were returned soldiers. There is still a big social housing network there today.”

Colin will also talk about the Mt Wellington Panmure RSA, which has sold its building and invested the proceeds to remain financially viable “We’ve got our own RSA section as part of the Landmark Hotel building, but because it doesn’t belong to us, we are limited in what we can do,” We haven’t got all our memorial boards up around the walls, all our memorial stuff is out the back in a big container. His brother, Barry, has written a book based on their father’s five war diaries, and Colin will take a copy to Australia for Lisette: “She knows very little about her grandad, but we are privileged. Dad never talked about the war, but he kept all his diaries. To have five years of World War I diaries is unique.”

The service in Australia will be relayed to New Zealand in the afternoon. After the Mt Wellington Panmure RSA service, the Kiwis will come back to the club and watch the service from Australia on a big screen.

In February, Lisette Mill and her son, Patrick, were part of a wreath-laying ceremony at the Canberra War Memorial. They retraced the steps of Lisette’s grandparents who visited the same memorial in 1962 as part of an official delegation of World War 1 veterans.

Colin Burgess went on line to watch the wreathlaying ceremony, where Lisette and Patrick laid a wreath on behalf of her grandfather.

The Mills’s local federal MP, Dan Tehan, laid a wreath on behalf of the RSL in Australia, and the New Zealand high commissioner, Chris Seed, laid one on behalf of Fred Burgess.

“Inserted into the bottom of the wreath was the whole inscription from my dad’s and mum’s plaques at the Levin cemetery,” Colin says. “Most of my family got on the computer and watched this very special happening.”

In 2018, the Panmure Action Group hopes to visit the Mt Wellington Panmure RSA and bring a New Zealand flag home.

Colin says he believes that if his dad knew what he and Barry were up to with the RSA today, he would be very encouraged.

Small school joins salute to hospital ship A 15-strong group from the small Maheno School just south of Oamaru will spend this Anzac Day on the Queensland coast saluting the exploits of a World War 1 hospital ship and crew. Eight children (years seven and eight), six parents and the principal will represent the 52-pupil school at a celebration and commemoration of the role of HMNZHS Maheno.

The ceremonies will take place on the 120x24kilometre Fraser Island off Harvey Bay in south-east Queensland. Brisbane High Rise Rotary, which is coordinating the project, will host a luncheon, using the Maheno’s Christmas Day 1918 menu (roasts were the order of the day), at the Fraser Island Retreat on Sunday, April 23. Two days later, an Anzac Day service will be held beside the Maheno’s remains on Seventy-Five Mile Beach where the ship has rested since being wrecked 1935.

The Maheno, named after the tiny North Otago town, was beached on the island in a cyclone in 1935 while being towed to Japan to be broken up for scrap.

The original ship’s bell was removed and retained by the owner (Union Steamship Company of New Zealand), and donated to the Maheno School in 1967. It has hung there since. Two former Maheno School pupils from 1967 will be at this year’s commemoration.

In 2015, seven Maheno children from years seven and eight, plus parents and the principal escorted the original bell to Fraser Island for the 2015 Anzac service. The replica bell at the Fraser Island Retreat was cast from the original.

A one-metre-square, bronze, commemorative

The Maheno wreck is an attraction for many of the 15,000 visitors who come to Fraser Island each year, but very few appreciate the ship’s historical significance. plaque to be unveiled on the site of the Maheno wreck in the foredune area beside the beach. It has been sculpted by an Australian, Ross Bastiaan, and will tell the Maheno story through a combination of text, pictures, a ship profile and a map of travels.

The plaque will sit on a plinth fashioned from a piece of volcanic-cooked sandstone quarried near Maheno; the rock was transported to Australia by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in January.

With the wreck slowly succumbing to the forces of Mother Nature, the aim is to establish a permanent memorial to record and recognise the Maheno’s role

as a hospital ship in World War I. It is a stop for many of Fraser Island’s 15,000-a-year tourist trade, but only a few appreciate its historical significance, its links to the Anzac concept of mateship, and its role as a hospital ship.

And, while the Maheno was one of many hospital ships during WWI, it is now a lone survivor representing crew, doctors, nurses and other medical personnel.

The hope is that the record of its history will encourage visitors to reflect on the contribution made by hospital ships, their crews, the doctors,

the nurses and the other medical personnel who provided support to so many troops.

A children’s book on the history of the Maheno and its hospital-ship significance will be launched at the April 23 lunch. It will include drawings by Butchulla children – the Butchulla people have been granted native title to K’gari (Fraser Island).

The Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa Tongarewa) in Wellington has a model of part of Maheno’s hospital-ship interior in its World War 1 and Anzac-legend display The model was created by Weta Workshops.

Trans-Tasman workhorse found fame in wartime exploits The TSS Maheno was launched in 1905 and operated

by Union Steamship as a passenger ship, primarily between Australia and New Zealand. The ship held the speed records for almost two decades. When World War 1 started, the New Zealand government chartered the ship and converted it into HMNZ Hospital Ship No 1. Much of the medical equipment on board came from a public appeal.

Its first voyage as a hospital ship was from July 7, 1915 to January 1, 1916, arriving at Anzac (beach), Gallipoli on August 26, 1915 to collect sick and wounded. It sailed for Southampton (England) on October 8, 1915 with cases requiring major surgery.

The journey was recorded in detail and published in a book by Lord Liverpool, the governor of New

Zealand at the time. He says 2350 were taken on board, most of them Australians and 331 of them New Zealanders. He details the dates when the Maheno visited Anzac (as he refers to it), plus the numbers and nationalities collected (a copy of the book is on display at the Fraser Island Retreat).

They were transported to Mudros (Lemnos Island, Greece), Malta, Alexandra (Egypt) and Southampton.

The Maheno later assisted at Fromelles and the Somme – trips also recorded in Liverpool’s second, third and fourth volumes. On April 25. 1917, the Maheno was at Albany (Western Australia) on a return journey to New Zealand with the wounded.

After WW1 the ship was refitted as a passenger liner and returned to the cross-Tasman run. However,

a combination of the Great Depression and newer, more efficient ships saw it laid up from 1931 to 1934 before a brief return to service in 1934 and retirement in 1935.

The ship was sold to a Japanese company to be broken up for scrap. On July 7, 1935 when it was being towed to Japan, a rare winter cyclone caused the tow-line to break and the Maheno was pushed onto the eastern beach of Fraser Island about 2pm on July 9, 1935. Another cyclone in March 1936 caused the ship to settle into the beach, removing any hopes of refloating it.

During World War 2 the wreck was used for commando training by the Z Force (precursor to the SAS) and for bombing practice by the RAAF.

Far North full of beaches, beauty Kelly Deeks Eighteen of the Levin Cosmopolitan Club’s senior members adjunct took a nine-day jaunt to Cape Reinga in February. They checking out the sights and whiling away the days on beautiful beaches.

They took the Northern Explorer train on February 24 from Levin to Auckland where they picked up two vans from to ACE Rentals. They loaded luggage and people and headed to their hotel.

“What a place to drive in,” says adjunct leader Fred Carrick. “One-way streets and repairs being done, it’s a nightmare!”

Most of the group had dinner at the Sky Tower, five minutes down the road from the hotel.

Next day it was off to Whangarei, with stops at Orewa, Warkworth and Wellsford, with lunch at a

café next to the beach. They arrived in Whangarei, mid-afternoon, and had their evening meal at the Northland Club.

The following day the group headed north at 9.30am to the Whangarei Falls, a 26-metre-high waterfall surrounded by park and native bush at the Whangarei Scenic Reserve.

Then to Kawakawa, where some sought out the town’s main tourist attraction, the colourful public toilets that were transformed into a work of art in 1998 by an Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

The group then boarded a train on the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway, travelling through the main street of Kawakawa, through farmland, stopping at a river bridge under repair, and back to Kawakawa.

and arranging a meal at the Swordfish Club – “Once again, a very nice meal at a friendly club, overlooking the sea,” Fred says.

Seniors swan round southern sights Kelly Deeks A 12-day trip by the Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club’s seniors adjunct in March took a group of 36 around some southern sights.

The group, along with its regular bus driver, John Busch, from Uzabus. flew to Christchurch on Monday, March 6 From the airport, they made their way to Timaru, stopping for lunch in Ashburton and at Barker’s, in of Geraldine, for a look around the shop.

In Timaru, they settled in to their accommodation at the Panorama Motor Lodge, then next day headed out to eat at the Timaru Town and Country Club.

Betty Green., assistant organiser of the seniors adjunct, recommends Timaru Town and Country, saying it offers very nice facilities and out-of-thisworld meals.

The following day it was on further south, to Dunedin, with a stop at the Moeraki Boulders for lunch. A planned stop at Palmerston for a photo by the town sign had to be abandoned because the sign was facing the wrong way..

They had a great experience while staying at the Alhambra Oaks Motor Lodge, in Dunedin. Betty says the proprietors were really nice and helpful.

On the Wednesday the group took a trip to Olveston Historic Home, where they had a highly interesting tour.

Thursday saw the group touring around Cadbury World, but five of the group did not attempt the 60 stairs for a bird’s eye view of the factory. After lunching at the Cadbury World café, they went on to the Otago Museum, where highlights were the planetarium and Discovery World Tropical Forest.

trip to Middlemarch, and, on their return, had a quick look around the Dunedin railway station. That evening it was dinner at the city’s Tramshed Bistro.

Saturday was spent out on the Otago Peninsula – Nature’s Wonders at Taiaroa Head for a wildlife tour, and a call to the Royal Albatross Centre.

On Sunday it was off to Larnach Castle, with lunch at the café there. That evening they headed to Dunedin Casino for dinner – a few members had a punt, but no big wins.

Sunday also brought the first spot of rain on the trip, and it continued into Monday morning before fining up in the afternoon.

Alhambra Oaks Motor Lodge had emailed Betty to bring some warm clothes, but some hadn’t believed her and found themselves down in the shops buying long sleeves and jackets.

On Tuesday the group made the return trip to

“But we ended up on the other side of the river with only a path and a bridge, so we decided to press on as it was too hot.”

On to the motel at Kaitaia where they had a few drinks and a roast meal.

Next morning they were picked up by the Harrisons Cape Runner bus, bound for Cape Reinga.

“Our bus driver was from the area and took us to all the little beaches on the way, which was awesome,” Fred says. “We had a picnic lunch at a beach, and some of us went swimming.”

At Cape Reinga the walk to the top was a bit steep for some, so others took photos from the top and saw the two tides meet.

At another beach-stop on the way back to Kaitaia, the driver provided small surf boards and took people who wanted to surf down to sand.

Next morning the group went south, and caught the Hokianga Ferry to Opononi for lunch and checked out Tane Mahuta, the world’s biggest kauri tree.

At Dargaville they stayed and ate at the Commercial Hotel. The following day, they took in the Dargaville Museum and then the Kauri Museum, at Matakohe,where they had lunch.

They were back in Auckland that night, and had a free day there. The last day was an early start to return the vans and catch the train trip back to Levin.

Timaru, stopping at Palmerston to get the photo taken, then calling into Oamaru and checking out Steampunk HQ. In Timaru they had a look outside St Patrick’s Basilica, then re-traced their steps to the Panorama Motor Lodge, and the Timaru Town and Country Club for dinner.

Next day, Wednesday, they had a tour of DB Draught Brewery at Washdyke on their way back to Christchurch. Dinner that night was at the Papanui Club.

Thursday was a day trip to Akaroa, where the group visited the Giants’ House and its gardens and art work. Dinner was at the Hornby Working Men’s Club – and Betty says they do really good meals.

On the way to the airport on the Friday, the group had a short stop and tour around the Antarctic Centre.

There was a fair bit of walking at the airport, both on arrival and departure, as the bus wasn’t allowed to drop the group at the terminal. However, with ages in the group ranging from 65 to 89, Betty had had the foresight to arrange three wheelchairs for those who had trouble walking.

She and the rest of the senior adjunct are now looking forward to the next trip, which she says will probably go somewhere in the North Island.

A capital week to remember Barry Mould Monday Seventeen Papanui Club travel section members assembled at Christchurch. In Wellington we were met by driver John, of Transit Coachlines, and headed for Weta Workshops, in Miramar.

We were let on the secrets of the creative processes used to make weapons, armour and vehicles for movies, such as Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and King Kong. Much use is made of rubber, plastic and polystyrene. Nothing is ever what it seems.

We then looked at private houses built on the hillside and requiring their own cable cars to transport goods from the roadway, and then to an upmarket, residential area with apartment living facing the Oriental Bay waterfront. (Sand for the beach is brought from Golden Bay).

After settling in at the Foreshore Motor Lodge, on the Petone foreshore, we explored the Petone shops, supermarkets, waterfront and wharf before heading to Speights Alehouse for our evening meal.

Tuesday Back into Wellington our day’s tour through the city...Haitaitai, Miramar, Seatoun, around the harbour to Barretts Reef where outlined the circumstances of the Wahine disaster in 1968, when 51 lives were lost, and how the problems encountered resulted in the formation of Civil Defence.

From Moa Point we could see snow on the Kaikouras, then it was through Kilbirnie and up bush-clad Mt Victoria for fantastic views of the city and harbour. A memorial to Rear Admiral Byrd, of American Antarctic fame, is up here. The drive down through narrow streets was a bit hair raising.

Back through the city and up to the Botanical Gardens, where we visited the begonia house (wonderful colours), then we rode down on the cable car to be picked up in Lambton Quay. We went to Old St Pauls Church, built in 1866 with stained-glass windows, and known as one of the world’s best examples of timber, gothic-revival architecture.

We then headed north on State Highway 1 past Porirua Harbour, Plimmerton, Pukerua Bay, Paekakariki to Paraparaumu for a lunch break.

A little way north is the Southward Car Museum – which contains the largest automobile collection in the southern hemisphere. More than 400 vintage, veteran and classic cars, plus many fire engines motorcycles and bicycles and aeroplanes, are spread across 6000 square metres over two levels.

There is also features a 470-seat theatre, cafe and function facilities.

We journeyed back to Paekakariki where we took the hill road to a lookout high above the western coastline. We enjoyed native bush as we headed through Pauatahanui over Haywards Hill to Lower Hutt and Petone. The coach dropped us at the Petone WMC for our evening meal and we walked or made our own way back to the motel.

Wednesday Walked to Jackson St, Petone, and caught the local bus to the city and the Great War Exhibition at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park. This exhibition about World War I was created by Peter Jackson with support from ANZ Bank.

Our guide, Chris, talked us year by year through the history of the war, through the triumphs and tragedies, the hardships and horror of the battlefields.

Numerous intricate displays ranged from a 10-tonne tank to tiny figurines in the trench warfare scenes, and intricate, lifelike dioramas.

After lunch at the Great War Exhibition cafe we took a shuttle to Parliament Buildings. Our guide, Murray, explained the workings of Parliament and the

submission process for proposed law changes etc.

Parliament Buildings contains Parliament House (the Beehive), the chambers building, and the Parliamentary Library. We spent about 20 minutes in the public gallery, facing the government during a question and answer session. What a real eye opener that was.

A short walk to the railway station, then a trainride back to Petone, and a fend-for-yourself evening meal.

Thursday Off at 8.45am on the local bus to Courtney Place and a short walk to Te Papa museum. The Gallipoli exhibition. created by Te Papa and Weta Workshops, contains several intricately detailed human sculptures, two and a half times normal size, which took 24,000 hours to complete. There are also three-dimensional maps, miniatures, models and dioramas depicting the day-to-day life and struggles of the campaign.

We had the rest of the day at our individual leisure, making our way back to the motel in Petone and meeting at Speights Alehouse for our evening meal.

Friday All aboard our coach at 7.30am to transfer to the Interislander ferry terminal. We were on the Aratika’s 9am sailing to Picton and enjoyed a smooth, uneventful crossing of Cook Strait. In Picton we made the short walk to the railway station for the 1.25pm departure of the Coastal Pacific.

This journey takes you through Marlborough‘s vineyards and farmland, the ponds at the Lake Grassmere salt-works, the seal colonies along the Kaikoura coastline, and North Canterbury rural areas. We arrived at the Christchurch railway station around 6.45pm.

Conclusion A very successful five-day trip. Special thanks to the organisation by Wayne and Helen, who also made sure we were always on time. A big thank you, too. to Sandra at YOU Travel, Tower Junction, Christchurch for the bookings, ticketing, farewell at the airport and welcome home.

The Dolores Cross project aims to give people the opportunity to personally pay tribute to the 30,000odd New Zealand Armed Forces casualties of war and conflicts who are lying in foreign soils. The project also covers 1626 New Zealanders who served with foreign forces.

The idea came to archivist Dolores Cross as she was helping researchers from Cannock Chase, Staffordshire, England with the history of Great War huts, the 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade and the Messines terrain model at Brocton Camp.

When the researchers told her that 73 Kiwis are buried in a Commonwealth War Cemetery at Cannock Chase, she decided to send NZRSA poppies to place on the graves for Anzac Day 2008.

However, she didn’t have enough poppies., so she made up the shortfall by making another memorial token. The cross was first placed on the 73 graves at Cannock Chase War Cemetery.

“I remembered seeing Maori women weaving flax at Whakarewarewa Village when I arrived in New Zealand in 1986,” she says. “ I decided to weave crosses using flax. Harakeke was chosen because it is native to New Zealand and it seemed appropriate that a part of New Zealand made up this unique token. It creates an intimate link between the homeland and those who went to wars and never returned. “A New Zealand Returned Services’ Association poppy is added to the cross to make it distinctively from New Zealand.”

The project is named after her because Dolores comes from a Latin word meaning ‘sorrows’: “It is not about me though, it is about the soldiers,” she says.

The Dolores Cross name (it means ‘the cross of sorrows’) is a reference to its origins and its memorial purpose.

Since 2008, Dolores and volunteers have visited and photographed nearly 14,000 graves. A cross is left at every grave/memorial, and photos are available free. However, donations are welcome to assist with project management.

Club calls on pros to offer options Sue Russell

The East Coast Bays RSA, on Auckland’s North Shore, has enlisted the help of a specialist research company to investigate options for the Club’s future format and business arrangements.

The RSA and the Browns Bay Bowling Club have commissioned Visitor Solutions to “look at the big picture with an objective, business-focussed approach”. The two clubs received a joint grant of $30,000 from the Upper Harbour and Hibiscus and Bays community boards to fund the feasibility study.

This followed an approach to the RSA from the bowling club, 500 metres down the road, suggesting the two amalgamate and be part of what is being called a “community hub” – a complex of Club space and sporting amenities such as bowling and tennis working on a business model and not solely reliant on income from members.

“If the merger goes ahead, there will be a loss of identity as an RSA, but not entirely,” says RSA president Kerry Kay. “That’s one of the challenges ...to ensure there is space set aside for some displaying of our valued memorabilia. We don’t see the merger and retaining a relationship to our founding values as mutually exclusive at all.

“Our members don’t want to see the club die away and we don’t see any reason why this should occur. We could see a possible Fox Hole Café at the bowling club site where some of our displays could be housed, as well as a bar/lounge area for the general public using the sporting facilities or visiting and socialising.”

The community hub is not the only potential

“There is a lot of goodwill and positivity from both Clubs, which is a great thing,” he says.

The bowling club’s approach was timely as the RSA was coming to terms with its worsening financial situation.

The club had been losing ground financially for some time, but it took some earnest research with XERO accounting software to reveal the extent of the decline.

Couple this with extensive roof and water damage from a fire in the club’s two-storey Browns Bay home in May 2015, and you had the conditions that led to serious consideration of the RSA’s future.

relationship to the patronage,” says Kerry Kay. “When the club was closed for 10 months after the fire, it was very difficult to get people back. Put simply, like many clubs, we were in decline and the fire really created an opportunity for us to look afresh.”

He and the committee set about consulting members and staff, a process that led to a decision at last October’s annual meeting to look seriously at options, including the bowling club’s amalgamation/ community hub proposal.

“When it went to the vote, there was overwhelming support to look at options seriously, given the approach by the bowling club,” says Kerry.

“I was heartened that this attitude from our members and staff gave us the mandate to really look at how we could best meet the future. Just as much for those members who have passed, who have put years of good energy and commitment towards it as for current members.”

Once the feasibility studies have concluded and the respective clubs have received its recommendations, if, how and when merger might

happen will go to the vote again.

Meanwhile, the fire damage to the RSA’s building has been repaired and the club has a conditional sale on its books, and is working through necessary council building-compliance documentation to secure the deal, says Kerry.

He expects the sale to go ahead as soon as the paperwork is tidied up. If the merger with the bowling club goes ahead, the RSA would invest funds in the new community hub – important, says Kerry, so that the club has a financial stake in the new facility.

“We’re very fortunate that the bowling Ccub owns its own land, making it possible for changes to the building to occur and placing the whole project on a sound financial footing.”

Kerry Kay says he has been with the New Zealand Police for 42 years (his current role is police development manager) and has become accustomed to managing change and creating initiatives.

“I am fortunate to be able to bring this professional experience to leading our RSA with its current membership of approximately 2000 through this important time.”
