AMP LOFTS PROJECT INFORMATION: Steinberg Architects Arts District, Los Angeles, CA Mixed-Use - Residential Commercial 320 Residential Units + 20,000 SF Commercial ROLE ON PROJECT: Amp Lofts came into the Steinberg offices entitled and with approved schematic design. My primary role was to manage the central revit model of the project. With just me and a project architect unfamiliar with revit on the project, this meant I got exposure to all parts of creating the documentation and also quickly learned many aspects of the code and regulations that governed the design. I worked closely with the project architect, and at times directly with the principal to make the project into a buildable proposal and also develop the design to have a richer character and tectonic language to fit the historic industrial context. Specifically, I coordinated the site plan, laid out the parking garage, analyzed the allowable area, developed elevations, built a physical model, oversaw the creation of renderings, and developed plans.

ROLE ON PROJECT: The Whittier Science Center called for extensive renovation of a 300’ long brutalist building, constructed of concrete encased steel and clad in an array of precast panels. Steinberg was charged with transforming the hermetic shell into a building that could draw in students from other departments, B promote collaboration, and support 21st century B research. I joined the project towards the end of LEVEL 3 SD, and my role primarily involved investigating the existing conditions and coordinating structural design through to CDs. This involved scruitinizing original drawing documents, and coordinating between the structural engineer and curtainwall manufacturer in order to properly detail connections between old and new construction. I also collaborated on design decisions and helped generate presentation materials for client meetings.

ROLE ON PROJECT: The Gant Conference Center was an aging building that needed more space and an updated design in order to compete for visitors coming to Aspen.

R+B proposed to increase conferences space by enclosing a portion of the front deck, and also add revenue potential by creating an occupiable roof deck to be rented for special functions. Because R+B was a small and busy office, I had substantial leeway on proposing design decisions. The design lacked a strong entrance for the visitors unfamiliar with the building, so I proposed popping up the central volume to signal the entrance and bring clerestory light deeper into the building. I also worked closely with the project architect to develop the vertical access and egress stairs to the new roof deck. The result is a very successful conference center that invites and opens up to the surroundings.

STIX RESTAURANT PROJECT INFORMATION: 3SIX0 Boston, MA Hospitality - Restaurant 1,200 SF ROLE ON PROJECT: The design goals for STIX restaurant was to create a signature contemporary design on a low budget, and maximize the use of a small and narrow space.

The menu was to have simple ingredients prepared elegantly for a dining experience that outperformed the cost of a typical plate. Fitting to the concept of the menu, simple materials such as plywood and cork flooring are transformed into an elegant solution by the precise geometry of a diagonal sprial. Additionally, the tables were designed to fold up so the space could transform from restaurant to bar/club and maximize use of the space. I was invited by the RISD faculty members who lead the firm to work on STIX restaurant as a summer intern.

My role involved drafting plans and elevations, and assisting with the development of the folding table system through physical models.
