MARTIN HAY AND THE MH EARTHMOVING TEAM BEAT THE DRUM FOR THE TANA H380 LANDFILL COMPACTOR.

artin Hay Earthmoving operate a skip bin business for recycled material from the construction industry and manage a landfill cell for its disposal in Australia. To support the operations the business set out to purchase a landfill compactor for the landfill cell. “I was looking for a stronger machine, because we’re compacting pretty robust stuff,” he says. “It’s all non-putrescible, meaning there’s no food or organic waste – it’s just purely C&D. When Martin approached the market and weighed up the options between a TANA full-width drum compactor vs a 4-Wheel compactor the choice was made simple...“What sold me on the TANA compactors is their full-width drums, as opposed to big wheels that leave a gap in the middle.

“ From the trials we ran, we found the TANA gave us about 35 per cent better compaction, and that’s a big difference. This is achieved by TANA’s rigid frame which utilizes the weight of the machine through the twin drums, The end result is a smooth, firmly compacted area. More teeth, more traction and compaction. A TANA Compactor's rigid frame maximizes the weight distribution which provides up to 100 per cent greater force on a single drum, compared to an oscillating four-wheeler of similar weight. The unique full-width drum designed maximizes coverage, requiring less passes and helps save on fuel burn and operator hours.

The advantage of the full-width twin drum design of a TANA compactor is that it reduces the number of passes required from 6 to 4 “We don’t have to do as many passes to achieve the level of compaction we need,” Martin says. “This also helps with the fuel economy of the machine – it’s probably 15 per cent better compared to other compactors I’ve used. With the price of fuel these days, that’s a pretty important factor.” “The operators love the machine,” he says. “They really can’t fault it, to be honest. “ The Tana H380 purchase was MH first experience dealing with the supplier, but he expects it won’t be the last.

COMPACT TROMMEL WITH HUGE RESULTS.

GREMAC TROMMEL SCREENS According to 2017 data from the European Environmental Bureau, Germany is the world’s leading recycler, achieving a self-reported recovery rate of 66 per cent. While much of Germany’s recycling success is attributed to engaged citizens and strong policy settings, its clear that Germans are very effective at screening through waste as a whole to achieve such figures. When it comes to screening soil, sand, gravel, stones, green waste, wood chips, compost and more the featherweight Gremac Trommel is a leader in its class. The Gremac E1 has a maximum weight of only 3.5 tonnes, making it small enough to be towed by large SUV. Gremac trommels can process between 50-100 metres cubed an hour for the larger variants, featuring strong electric geared motors and a hopper with a capacity of up to 3 metres cubed. Mesh screen segments can be changed with ease within 15 minutes, and a large door providing ease of maintenance to the lower belt and cross belt. The robust design of the GREMAC screening machine guarantees maximum reliability. Hot-dip galvanized components ensure Gremac Trommels longevity. The drive is available as either a petrol or diesel generator or can be plugged into mains to power to power the electric motors. Gremac trommels are perfect for operators who want the flexibility of a small portable trommel whilst at the same time achieving very impressive throughput rates. With the overall size of Gremac trommels being much smaller than its competitors the Gremac can easily be transported from site to site and require far less storage space when not in use. Gremac has been delivering its trommels globally and the feedback received from customers is nothing less than impressed.

TANA SHARK Applicable even for the most challenging materials the Tana Shark can shred a wide variety of materials, such as tyres, commercial & industrial waste construction & demolition waste, Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), plastics, MSW, Waste wood, railway sleepers, household waste, mattresses and furniture, paper, shingles, ragger wire and other more. One TANA Shark can replace three different machines. Many tasks can be performed with one shark instead of a pre-shredder, primary shredder and a screen. TANA Shark waste shredders are designed for shredding the widest range of materials. The TANA SHARK enables full control over the particle size from 50 to 500 mm (2” to 20”) with lowest operation costs. This enables time and cost savings as it is possible to perform shredding in just one pass. With the TANA Shark it only takes 10 minutes to add or remove screen sizes.

INDUSTRIAL SHREDDING CAMPAIGN Veolia travels 1000’s of kms to collect waste from the Cooper Basin to be then processed at the Santos owned and Veolia operated waste management facility based in Moomba SA. A Shredding Campaign was initiated to help extend the cell life of the landfill while also reducing recyclable volumes in preparation for transport. The troublesome incoming materials were tyres, pallets, pond liners, large plastic drums and more. The size of these hollow items makes them difficult to load and transport, costing valuable time and money. The TANA 440DT was a game changer for the operations as the machine allowed a massive reduction in the size of their recyclable product. This resulted in significant savings on transport costs while also reducing the carbon footprint by decreasing the number of trucks on the road due to volume reduction.

Prior to the TANA Shark operating on site the landfill had zero steel recovered from tyres, however during the 8 week campaign 38 tonnes of steel was recovered from the Sharks over band magnet.

Through this campaign Santos found a 75% reduction in transport for the remaining processed rubber and the benefit for Santos being an overall reduction of tyre processing cost of around 60-70%. Redundant pond liners were also troublesome waste product for the facility, this is due to the size and composition which take up a considerable amount of space. With the use of a TANA Shark the volume of this material was reduced by 80-90% which has made transport and handling more efficient. Overall the Shredding Campaign was a huge success, with the operation seeing: The life of the landfill being extended Transport costs reduced due to volume reduction Increased waste recovery and recycling
