From WCC to NASA WCC ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Aisha Bowe has two aerospace engineering degrees from the University of Michigan, spent nearly seven years working for NASA in northern California and today is a successful tech entrepreneur based in the Washington D.C. area.

That impressive career progression started with a single A in an algebra class at Washtenaw Community College.

That set off what Bowe calls the key to any large-scale success — a series of small wins. “If I take the time to think about how many opportunities there were for me to get stuck, it’s staggering, said Bowe. “But then you find that next small win and you keep going.”

From there, the small wins continued to pile up. They led to a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree and an internship at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, and eventually to an award-winning career developing algorithms in support of air traffic management.

Woodworking: Creating End-Grain Cutting Boards

Learn how to formulate your own soap recipes, the proper use and storage of lye, and how to mix lye and water. Natalia Alexandrova

DANCE AND LANGUAGE TRAINER

Natalia Alexandrova has a lifelong passion for teaching and dancing. After studying ballet, choreography and history of dance in Russia as a child, Alexandrova studied economics and management in college. Her first experience in teaching was at an English language school in Moscow. After immigrating to Canada, she rediscovered dancing while working at a ballroom studio in Toronto. The owners quickly recognized her abilities and began to train her as an instructor and international competitor.

“Coming back to dancing, teaching and competing woke up a part of my heart which was frozen for so many years,” says Alexandrova. “Dancing allows people to express themselves in ways normal life does not. Dancing teaches you discipline and confidence, but in a fun environment. The smiles I see on the faces of my students tell me that dancing is changing their lives for the better.”

Alexandrova brings passion to her training, whether it’s dancing or Russian language. Her purpose is to open new paths of discovery for each participant in her classes.

Rustic Italian Cooking Country-Style Savory Bread and Focaccia

Pasta from Three Regions

Create delicious breads in this hands-on workshop. Create baba rustico, a homemade bread made with eggs, milk, a mix of cheese and cured meats, baked to a golden crust. Make homemade pizza dough with sautéed Italian sausage and broccoli rabe filling and homemade focaccia with a caramelized onions and Gorgonzola topping, baked till crisp. A seasonal salad will complement our meal.

Explore three different regional variations on fantastic pasta dishes! We’ll begin in the Campania region with a fettuccine with sautéed diced zucchini, grated Parmigiano and fresh breadcrumbs.

We’ll prepare Venetian-style roasted quail with mixed herbs and crispy, roasted slices of pancetta. A Venetian-style risotto with vegetable broth, spring peas, diced pancetta, leeks and sautéed red radicchio with garlic and chillies will complement our meal. We will enjoy a traditional tiramisu for dessert.

Explore some of the delicious foods of Italy! Join us in preparing crespelle, a savory-style crepe with a fresh ricotta and spinach filling, baked, then served with a white cream sauce. A sautéed zucchini and Parmigiano frittata and seasonal salad will follow.

A Taste of Southern Italy: Abruzzi

Chicken Scaloppine

Imagine the delight of your friends and family when you serve culinary treasures from the region of Abruzzi. We will first prepare Abruzzi-style braciola, a dish of thin veal slices around a breadcrumb, cheese and herb filling, simmered in white wine and tomato sauce. Homemade egg noodles and a seasonal salad or vegetable will serve as side dishes. A peach and almond tart will bring our evening to a close.

Enjoy a fantastic evening of Italian cooking, company and conversation! This evening we will prepare scaloppine, thin slices of chicken breast, dusted in flour, sautéed, and served with a white wine, chicken broth and fresh sage sauce. Yukon gold potatoes, roasted with pancetta and herbs, and a curly endive salad in a lemon vinaigrette and anchovy dressing will accompany our scaloppine. What is a CEU? A CEU (continuing education unit) is a

national measurement unit. One CEU equals ten classroom or equivalent hours, and is used to record, transfer and recognize participation in noncredit learning experiences.

Emeritus Scholarship:

You must: 1) Have in-district residency status per WCC residency policy; 2) Be 65 years old as of January 1, 2019; 3) Make an in-person visit to the Student Connection with your driver’s license or state-issued photo ID to confirm your status and update your record prior to registering for your first class.

Note: Once your scholarship qualification has been confirmed, you may enroll in any noncredit class during regular registration times. To register online with the scholarship, please contact our offices at 734-677-5060.

WCC will apply the scholarship to your tuition for noncredit classes. The emeritus scholarship does not apply to mandatory class fees.

Nonprofit Agency Scholarship:

This scholarship provides payment for tuition (only) of agency-approved Economic and Community Development noncredit classes. Submit an application each semester for each class you plan to attend. You must complete all items on this checklist to qualify: 1) You must be a permanent employee of a nonprofit agency (permanent position) in Washtenaw County; 2) Submit the nonprofit agency scholarship application, complete with supervisor approved class(es) and signature, ten business days before start of class; 3) You must attend all class sessions and complete all class requirements. If the class is not successfully completed, you (or your agency) may be billed for the full tuition amount of the class and/or have your scholarship discontinued; 4) You must submit your completed application form with a copy of your agency’s 501(c)3 documentation no later than ten business days before the start of class.

Security Act of 1990 is a federal law that mandates the disclosure by all institutions of higher education of the rates of graduation, the number of incidents of certain criminal offenses, the type of security provided on campus, the pertinent policies regarding security on campus and policies that record and deal with alcohol and drug abuse. WCC is in full compliance and provides information annually through various means, including college publications, wccnet.edu or email.
