Intimate Partner Violence and Codependency Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health issue. The role of codependence as an integral part of this dynamic is only peripherally understood and inadequately addressed in most therapeutic situations. IPV victims, regardless of sex, sexual preference, or race, have a significant need for clinical intervention that identifies and addresses codependence issues. Kimberly Laughton QUICKBOOKS AND BOOKKEEPING After years of running the numbers, Kim Laughton is taking her knowledge of accounting, auditing and taxes to train others. “I’m interested in accounting concepts because I love the fact that the numbers always have to balance,” says Laughton. “It’s like a magic teeter-totter.”

Having taught at WCC since 2006, Laughton finds that many people attending her classes are entrepreneurs that understand their products or services but don’t understand how to keep track of their business income and expenses. “I enjoy trying to make the lightbulb go on in people’s heads for basic accounting concepts and QuickBooks functionality,” she says.

Her QuickBooks and bookkeeping classes combine lecture with hands-on exercises so participants can not only gain skills but also understand the “why” and the “how.”

Milshteyn simultaneously earned his high school diploma and an Internet Professional associate degree from Washtenaw Technical Middle College in 2001. Become an urban sketcher as we draw (and paint) on location. We will meet on the WCC campus and at other local sites to witness and record our surroundings. Fill your sketchbook as you develop your drawing skills, learn watercolor techniques to add color and life, and become more visually aware and appreciative in a supportive environment.

Explore the shape of water as we learn techniques in watercolor to paint water in landscapes and still life compositions. Discover some of the delicious dishes from the Tuscan region!

We’ll prepare breaded, herbed lamb chops, pan seared with a Pecorino and thyme garnish. A Chianti risotto and Italian sausage, simmered in chicken broth, will accompany our chops.

We’ll also enjoy a seasonal salad or vegetable. Carmellio (an Italian creamed custard) will bring our evening to a close.

Create delicious tasting pizzas and focaccia in this class! Our first pizza will be a fried calzone with a mozzarella, ricotta and salami filling. A Taste of Southern Italy: Campani

Dinner for Two

Imagine the delight of your friends and family when you serve culinary treasures from the region of Campani! We will first prepare country-style ragù with chunks of beef and pork simmered in a red wine and tomato puree. Semolina pasta, and a seasonal salad or vegetable will accompany our ragù. A delicious Amalifistyle cream and cherry tart will bring our meal to an end.

We will prepare saltimbocca la romana, thin slices of veal wrapped with prosciutto and sage, drenched in flour, sautéed, and finished with a white wine sauce. Our side dishes will include risotto, simmered in chicken broth, tossed with Gorgonzola, Parmigiano and radicchio, and a fresh artichoke salad.

Join us to prepare porchetta, a Tuscan-style pork loin filled with garlic and rosemary, then wrapped in pork belly and slow roasted. We will also prepare roasted potato wedges with onion, bacon and herbs. Fagioli all’uccelletto, a dish of cannellini beans stewed with tomatoes, garlic and fresh sage, will serve as our side dish. Crostata di prugne, a homemade plum tart, will be the sweet finish to our evening.

Mermaids, friends and family will marvel at your seafood meal!

We’ll begin with seasoned, sautéed Sicilian-style grouper with a grape tomato, caper, olive and herb sauté. Katie Whitehouse’s passions include growing things, creating things and teaching. When she’s not leading a community workshop or creating her own art, you can find her pottering in her sunroom, nurturing her plant babies and working on her green thumb.

“My mom always had a house full of plants,” Whitehouse says. “The space in front of the patio doors was my own miniature jungle as a child.” Today, she not only finds growing her own houseplants a rewarding hobby, but it’s also a way to beautify her living space, improve air quality and feel connected to nature and its beauty. She says teaching is a meaningful way to connect with the people in her community. Whitehouse loves to share her passion for plants with others by teaching workshops on creating planters and houseplant care. In her classes, she combines practical houseplant knowledge with hands-on experience, so students can put their newly earned expertise to work right away.

Monuments and Their Stories: Aztecs

Exploring Italy’s Cities and Towns

This richly illustrated class will introduce you to the fascinating life of the Aztecs, their art, everyday life and religion. You will understand how the now controversial practice of human sacrifice was integrated and justified by the worldview of the Aztecs. Large temples attest to the great fear and respect the Aztecs held for their bloodthirsty gods. We will study the layout of these temples, and how this culture came to an abrupt end with the invasion of Cortés and his Spanish conquistadors.

Take a fascinating journey to some of Italy’s lesser-known towns and villages. Visit Perugia, one of Italy’s oldest cities that houses one of the country’s oldest universities and stroll through Assisi, home of the St. Francis of Assisi basilica and the destination for many pilgrimages. What is a CEU? A CEU (continuing education unit) is a

national measurement unit. One CEU equals ten classroom or equivalent hours, and is used to record, transfer and recognize participation in noncredit learning experiences.

Emeritus Scholarship: You must: 1) Have in-district residency status per WCC residency policy; 2) Be 65 years old as of January 1, 2019; 3) Make an in-person visit to the Student Connection with your driver’s license or state-issued photo ID to confirm your status and update your record prior to registering for your first class.

Note: Once your scholarship qualification has been confirmed, you may enroll in any noncredit class during regular registration times. To register online with the scholarship, please contact our offices at 734-677-5060.

WCC will apply the scholarship to your tuition for noncredit classes. The emeritus scholarship does not apply to mandatory class fees.

Nonprofit Agency Scholarship: This scholarship provides payment for tuition (only) of agency-approved Economic and Community Development noncredit classes. Submit an application each semester for each class you plan to attend. You must complete all items on this checklist to qualify: 1) You must be a permanent employee of a nonprofit agency (permanent position) in Washtenaw County; 2) Submit the nonprofit agency scholarship application, complete with supervisor approved class(es) and signature, ten business days before start of class; 3) You must attend all class sessions and complete all class requirements. If the class is not successfully completed, you (or your agency) may be billed for the full tuition amount of the class and/or have your scholarship discontinued; 4) You must submit your completed application form with a copy of your agency’s 501(c)3 documentation no later than ten business days before the start of class.
