Unearthing the Past WCC Radiology Students Take Their Talents to Peru

S

ince 2001, WCC students have been invited to work alongside college faculty and world-renowned a rchaeolog ists in Per u documenting the condition of delicate mummies and artifacts found within the foothills. The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity finds students working with portable X-ray units on site, where they unearth and study remains that are over 1,000 years old. While a far cry from digital equipment found in many health care environments today, this unique classroom provides opportunities that a lab cannot. In the past, students have made discoveries of historical significance including unearthing a male mummy so well preserved

2

that it still had skin, hair and an elaborate headdress with feathers. And, because of the connections made over the years, students often get to experience areas that the general public wouldn’t see. How is that for a résumé builder?

“Because of our connection with archaeology, we see areas that the normal public wouldn’t see. We X-rayed some of what the Discovery Channel called the Mummies in the Mist.” Radiologic Technologists Median Pay: $54,340 per year Job Outlook: Employment of radiologic technologists is expected to grow by 28 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. Radiologic technologists typically need an associate’s degree and must be licensed or certified in most states.

Looking Forward WCC is the only institution of higher education outside of Peru to be invited back year after year to participate in the three-week long trip.

J

ared Schemanski didn’t star t out looking for a career in computer security, but when something is meant to be, fate has a way of stepping in.

Starting Out For five years Schemanski worked as a truck driver, logging long hours on the road and time away from his family and friends. Hoping to get a leg up in the industry, he started looking into a degree in logistics. “I wanted to get out of the truck,” he said. “I never went to college, but always wanted to attend. I knew I could do better for myself so I started focusing on getting the right education.” When it came time to choosing a college, he immediately

8

gravitated towards WCC and its articulation agreement with Eastern Michigan University (EMU). After taking a few computer classes, Schemanski discovered just how much he enjoyed working in network security. The decision to switch career paths was evident and in 2012 at the age of 32 Schemanski graduated from WCC with degrees in Applied Science of Computer Networking and Applied Science in Computer Security. He now works for Nuspire Net work s i n C om mer c e Townsh ip as a tier two network engineer. “WCC has great instructors. They understood I was working and going to school at the same time,” recalls Schemanski. “They offered me a lot of f lexibility and were really

committed to making sure I completed my degree. I had a lot of help and support from all of my professors.”

The Program The Computer Science program at WCC prepares students to transfer to Eastern Michigan University to complete a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Applied Computer Science. Graduates enjoy careers in computer science fields such as computer systems programming and analysis, software development and maintenance and applications programming.

Finding Success Schemanski is flourishing in his new career path. In fact, he is back in school at EMU pursing a bachelor’s degree in

information assurance with a focus on network security. “If you don’t start you can’t finish,” he says. “It can be challenging at times, but as long as you keep one class on your schedule you are more likely to take another the next semester. It gets easier and you can do it.”

Network Security Median Pay: $75,660 per year Job Outlook: Employment of information security analysts, web developers and computer network architects is projected to grow 22 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. Job prospects for all three occupations are favorable. Information from www.bls.gov

More Than a Paycheck WCC Student Finds Career

or 35-year-old Deverell (Dev) Baty, working as a horticulture specialist for a lawn care company was just another job. It provided a stable income for his family of nine, but the hours spent around chemicals each day worried him. So when he and his wife moved to Ann Arbor three years go, Baty knew he wanted to make a career change. “I didn’t just want a paycheck,” said Baty, who looked at several WCC courses before deciding on his future line of work. “I wanted a career, and I wanted to get back into the workforce quickly.” He also knew he needed a school and occupation that would allow him to attend college and still

spend time with his seven children. That’s when he found WCC’s Dental Assisting Program. Living and working in a town known for world-class healthcare made his decision an easy one. Baty claims he “knew it would be a good fit.”

Starting Down the Path He entered WCC’s program in 2010 and graduated in two years. Since that time, he has passed his State of Michigan RDA licensing exam and is currently employed at the University of Michigan Community Dental Clinic.

t’s no secret that getting a degree from WCC is one of the best educational values around, but many students begin their college careers with the added burden of trying to figure out how they’re going to pay for an education. That’s where financial aid comes in. But where do you start? How about with the basics:

What is Financial Aid? Financial aid is money provided by federal, state and college sources to help students pay their expenses while attending college. In general, all U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens, who are enrolled in an approved degree or certificate program, are eligible to receive some type of financial assistance

If I receive financial aid now, do I need to pay the money back later?

The entire financial aid process seems overwhelming and confusing. How can I get financial assistance if I’m not even sure how to apply? WCC’s Office of Financial Aid can help you fill out applications and answer any questions you have about the process. Your financial eligibility will be determined by a number of factors including family income, the size of your family and number of family members attending college. Not applying for financial aid
is one of the biggest mistakes a student could make.

Does the College have a tuition payment plan? WCC offers many affordable payment options including bi-weekly or monthly payment plans.

For more information on There are many grant and scholarship financial aid visit programs available offering “free www.wccnet.edu or call money” that does not have to be repaid. 734-973-3523. Other financial aid programs are in the form of low-interest loans that do require repayment, but only after you have stopped attending school. 18
