hether you are planning an intimate dinner or choosing a gift for a friend who’s an aficionado, numerous questions arise when making a selection of wine. What is the best choice? What is the best value? What should I expect? The process can be overwhelming even for professionals. The wine-buying public has grown dependent on a points system. How a wine scored is going to weigh heavily on what consumers expect and what they are willing to pay. Ratings are often heavily based on drinkability. This has led to wineries manipulating their offerings to achieve higher scores, which instantly increases demand. Modern tricks to obtaining these high scores include using lots of new oak. This makes wine softer and gives it complementary flavors. Micro Oxygenation has been introduced to add controlled oxygen into wine. This process was first introduced to help soften the harsh tannins of Tannat in France and is now widely popular. This also helps with point ratings by making the wine easier to drink upon opening. As producers shift to accommodate this practice, many wines are trending toward a comparable style. Winemakers care more about what they’re transforming their brand into than the natural product at hand. Modern techniques can do good things for wine – but only to an

extent. The drawback is placing fruit in the front and earth driven flavors in the back. Jonathan Nossiter’s wine documentary “Mondovino” shows such trends in traditional wine that are often forgotten. When making a selection, it’s best to appreciate how wines are different and to remember that a score is merely one person’s palate perception on a given day. The land speaks through wine, giving it a sense of place. The shift toward one style threatens to eliminate the diversity that makes each wine unique.

‘READ MY PINS’ OPENING Smithsonian Institution Castle PHOTOS BY ALFREDO FLORES

“PRICKLY” SITUATION: Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s friends, fans, and

Secretary of the Smithsonian G. Wayne Clough

colleagues turned out to see over 200 of her brooches, a collection she made into a personal fashion statement to express her various moods and opinions as she conducted international diplomacy for the nation. These might, she noted, range from wearing a turtle on a slow day, or a bee if she felt like “stinging” Yasser Arafat. DIPLOMATIC ARSENAL Smithsonian Institution Secretary G. Wayne Clough praised the “patriotic” exhibition for holding its own among his various museums’ 137 million items, ranging from the Hope Diamond to dinosaur bones. Albright was quick on the uptake: “I’m glad they put my pins on display instead of me.” VIEW ALL THE PHOTOS AT WWW WASHINGTONLIFE COM!

POLLYWOOD | SPECIAL FEATURE

BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA The President and First Lady haven’t exactly been emulating the Kennedys and Reagans on the Washington social scene, preferring discreet dinners with Valerie Jarre and other Chicago pals and the occasional foray to Ben’s Chili Bowl or Ray’s Hell Burger with the likes of Nicolas Sarkozy and Dimitri Medvedev. Maybe a crasher-free state dinner triumph will get the ball rolling.

2

JOE & JILL BIDEN The Veep is glad-handing and gregarious, but also gaffe-prone – which adds a certain frisson whenever he is present. Our “Second Lady” teaches English and gets high marks for opening their home to breast cancer benefits and other worthy causes.

3

ROBERT & ELENA ALLBRITTON The Riggs banking heir and his wife are much in demand now that the family’s ever-expanding media empire includes the multimedia Politico news source, WJLAABC7, News Channel 8, and the recentlylaunched TBD.com website.

4 38

MIKE ALLEN The never-ending upto-the-minute e-mail missives from Politico’s reporter who never sleeps are “the first thing the White House

30

wakes up to” and clued-in Washington follows suit. If you’re lucky, his blog about your party might turn up before the crème brûlée and be twice as delicious.

5

YOUSEF & ABEER AL-OTAIBA The United Arab Emirates’ handsome envoy was a social catch even before he married his beautiful bride. We hope they’ll keep things hopping after a spring wedding extravaganza featuring entertainment by Patti Austin and Tony Bennett.

6

SALEM & RIMA AL-SABAH The charmingly brainy Kuwaiti ambassador and his ever-chic sheikha host parties to die-for, featuring exotic blooms, top flight entertainment, and a guest list ranging from presidents, first ladies, and current administration bigwigs to congressional and media heavyweights and sexy Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio.

JAMES & MARJORIE BILLINGTON The Librarian of Congress is a relentless acquisitor, novelist, and Russian scholar who adds intellectual gravitas to any occasion.

13

TONY BLINKEN & EVAN RYAN This attractive and accomplished pair worked for the Clintons before they tied the knot; their teamwork continues in Vice President Biden’s office, where he handles national security matters and she lobbies Congress on health care, the environment, and other domestic issues. A razzle-dazzle duo.

8

15

JEFFREY BADER & ROHINI TALALLA The buzz factor rises along with the conversation level when the National Security Council senior director for Asian affairs and his wife, an exotic indiedocumentary filmmaker, make the scene.

10 81

12

14

ADRIENNE ARSCHT After moving here from Florida, this banking whiz is upping the ante for arts philanthropy and exclusive Sunday brunches that get high marks for a jaunty mix of artists, financiers, writers, socialites, and even a Supreme Court justice or two.

9 25

BOB BARNETT & RITA BRAVER Washington über-agent/lawyer Barnett gets mega-bucks advances for clients that include Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Tony Blair. Braver is a respected CBS correspondent with multiple Emmys and a talent for covering spy stories and political scandals.

7

DAVID & SUSAN AXELROD Obama’s most senior political advisor does dominate a room. ’Tis a pity he’s seldom seen outside the White House.

18

11

MELODY BARNES A passion for politics eventually landed this feisty 5-foot-2 lawyer in Sen. Ted Kennedy’s office, where she was known as the “bankruptcy goddess” for battling credit card companies. Now she’s focusing on education and health care as director of the House Domestic Policy Council.

BEN BRADLEE & SALLY QUINN This nationally-known duo are a tad under wraps of late due to family matters and book projects, but they still turn up at A-list fêtes where they mostly mingle with power players or longtime friends.

Protection Agency administrator now serves as Obama’s energy czarina where her savvy and savoir-faire came in handy while helping coordinate efforts to clean up the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

19

CALVIN & JANE CAFRITZ Thank these generous patrons for their family foundation’s support of local arts causes at a level unmatched by other donors throughout the past 50 years. She adds muchneeded pizzazz to the opera board.

20

WILLIAM & BUFFY CAFRITZ Their host of friends is both nationwide and bipartisan, the main reason why a stellar A-list crowd turns out for their quadrennial Inaugural bash.

21

JAY CARNEY & CLAIRE SHIPMAN A double decade in journalism ended when this former Time veteran hung up his reporter’s hat to help keep Vice President Joe Biden on message with a minimum of slip-ups. His wife, a foxy ABC News “Good Morning America” correspondent, recently co-authored “Womenomics,” a book exploring the redefinition of women in the modern business world.

22

STEVE & JEAN CASE AOL’s co-founder and his wife quietly specialize in using social media to promote everyday philanthropy and engage citizens in public sector efforts. Much sought after but rarely seen.

23

THE INFANTA CHRISTINA & INAKI URDANGARIN DUKE OF PALMA DE MAJORCA Spain’s royal princess keeps a notably low profile, preferring to raise four children quietly in the suburbs while her Olympian handball star spouse tends to his duties as chairman of Telefonica International USA.

24

DAVID & KATHERINE BRADLEY He’s a cerebral and somewhat reserved publishing mogul (The Atlantic, National Journal); she’s as beautiful as she is kind. Together they quietly support the arts and educational causes, mostly through their CityBridge Foundation.

STEVEN & JEAN CHU Don’t be surprised if there’s a burst of electricity when the secretary of energy arrives. After all, he’s the first Cabinet member to be awarded a Nobel Prize (for his work on cooling and trapping atoms). His wife is an Oxford-educated physicist who was Stanford’s admissions director for ten years.

16

25

STEPHEN & JOANNA BREYER The witty and cultivated Supreme Court justice is often sighted at theater and art gallery openings. His wife, the daughter of a British peer, seems to prefer the comforts of home.

17

SCOTT BROWN & GAIL HUFF Heads turn and jaws drop when the handsome Massachusetts legislator and his anchorwoman wife (WJLA/ABC7) enter a room. It’s been that way ever since he blew into town after winning the late Ted Kennedy’s senate seat. A couple to watch.

18

CAROL BROWNER & TOM DOWNEY Bill Clinton’s two-term Environmental

BILL & HILLARY CLINTON He’s hardly here, preferring no doubt to give Hillary a wide berth as she conducts affairs of state in Washington and around the world.

26

ESTHER COOPERSMITH This former representative to the U.N. has long been a presence on the Embassy Row and arts scenes and regularly hosts heads of state and other international bigwigs at large-scale dinners in her palatial Kalorama home.

27

JACK DAVIES & KAY KENDALL One of those glam couples whom lesser mortals strive to emulate. He’s a former president of AOL International with an interest

35

in philanthropy. She’s the Washington Ballet’s ex-chairwoman and likes to dance up a storm. He’d better keep up.

wife rarely go out, preferring to concentrate on raising a family and running their own charitable trust.

28

34

JOHN & DEBBIE DINGELL The longest-ever serving member of the House of Representatives (55 years!) is an institution in his own right. She tends to the flame while working as a consultant on automotive issues and helping numerous worthy causes. Faithful to a fault.

29

THOMAS DONILON & CATHERINE RUSSELL Keep an eye on the deputy national security advisor who may move up another notch at the White House. He knows a few things about transition after helping fill many of the top political appointments at the state department.

30

RICHARD & LORETTA DURBIN The Senate majority whip is a skilled debater and partisan inquisitor credited with advancing strong consumer protection and environmental legislation. Don’t expect this noted anti-smoking advocate to follow suit if his old Illinois colleague lights one up in the Oval Office.

31

ROBERT DUVALL & LUCIANA PEDRAZA Nearing 80 and still going strong in Movieland, Duvall has no trouble keeping up with a much younger (by 41 years) Argentinian wife who shares his love for tango and promoting causes like Pro Mujer, an organization that aids poor women in Latin America.

32

SUSAN EISENHOWER Ike’s brainy granddaughter switched parties to support Obama and still kept all her Republican friends. A primo diplomatic post would be a logical next step. Stay tuned ...

33

RAHM EMANUEL & AMY RULE Top hosts no longer worry about Obama’s chief of staff disrupting their dinner parties with salty repartee. Truth is, he and his

41

DAVID GREGORY & BETH WILKINSON The “Meet the Press” moderator and his wife, a general counsel at Fannie Mae who once helped the U.S. Army prosecute Manuel Noriega, are among the District’s ranking power couples. So well connected it hurts.

JON FAVREAU President Obama is famed for writing many of his own speeches, but he can’t do them all. That’s where “Favs,” his 29-yearold “wunderkind” wordsmith, takes pen in hand to craft sentences that may be enshrined forever. Hardly a regular on the party circuit, you might catch him having a brewski with friends near his Dupont Circle condo.

42

SIDNEY & JANE HARMAN The high-fi mogul recently made headlines when he bought Newsweek from the Washington Post Company. Catch him and his equally hard-charging legislator wife strolling the aisles at the Harman Center for the Arts.

35

ADRIAN & MICHELLE FENTY Even with a recent charm offensive, Hizzoner is all about politics, schools, and getting re-elected. Friendly and fashionable Michelle has pals in every precinct. His best asset by far.

43

ROBERT HIGDON “Higgy” worked for the Reagans and Margaret Thatcher and is now Prince Charles’s Man in Washington. He knows where lots of bodies are buried but swears he will never tell. Really good value.

36

RAUL & JEAN MARIE FERNANDEZ The congenial Fernandez made millions with Proxicom and is a co-owner of the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics sports teams. He and his attractive wife show up to support numerous worthy educational and medical causes.

44

CHRISTOPHER HITCHENS & CAROL BLUE “Hitch,” the quintessential Brit bad boy scribe, has been ailing of late. All Washington is hoping he and his witty, screenplay-writing wife will soon be back to ruffle feathers and keep us amused.

37

AL & FRANNIE FRANKEN This former “Saturday Night Live” funnyman does liven things up, even when he’s trying to be senatorial. Someone please tell him to keep that Blackberry sheathed at the dinner table.

ELENA KAGAN The newest Supreme will be in high demand when the Court convenes in October with three female justices for the first time in history. We’re hoping she loves opera and “dines out” as much as colleagues Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer. The verdict will soon be in!

50

KATTY KAY & TOM CARVER BBC’s gal in Washington, a multilingual diplobrat, lights up the screen with commentary on all things political in the former colonies. Carver, a step-grandson of Field Marshall Montgomery, is former journo who now directs a strategic consultant firm. Veddy charming and oh-so British.

51

VICTORIA REGGIE KENNEDY Though she may yet fulfill her late husband Ted Kennedy’s supposed wish to fill his senate seat, this non-practicing attorney has lived up to clan standards nicely while passionately campaigning for political involvement and heading up the non-profit organization Common Sense about Kids and Guns.

52

ERIC HOLDER & SHARON MALONE Rarely-seen on the social circuit, this A-list duo learned early to balance high powered careers – he is the attorney general and she is a practicing OB/GYN – with raising three children.

JOHN KERRY & TERESA HEINZ With Hillary and Ted both gone, Kerry is shaping up to be the Senate Democrat with the most clout. Will he run for president again or sail into the sunset on that controversial mega-yacht? She runs the gazillion-dollar Heinz foundations and may be the only Washington woman for whom the title of first lady would be a demotion.

46

53

45

38

49

TIMOTHY & CAROLE GEITHNER Burdened with one of the planet’s hardest jobs, the treasury secretary is under withering fire from both sides of the political spectrum as he attempts to extricate the U.S. economy from one of its worst downturns in history. Extra points if you ever see him.

VALERIE JARRETT The supremely connected Chicago businesswoman and lawyer took the Obamas under her wing and the rest is history. Spot the president’s senior advisor at upscale restaurants and the odd Condé Nast party.

39

JULIUS GENACHOWSKI & RACHEL GOSLINS The innovative FCC chairman and his documentary filmmaking wife are among the few top Obama-ites who let loose on the social scene.

47

JIM & DIANE JONES Although he now wears civvies as national security advisor, it’s still stomachs in and chests out when the former Marine Corps commandant enters a room. Not to worry. He and his wife are the most charming of guests.

40

VERNON & ANN JORDAN He’s a major flirt and totally upfront about it; she graciously lets him play the role. With so many corporate board meetings to attend, it’s a wonder this consummately connected couple finds time to attend events for the many causes they support.

JIM KIMSEY The former Vietnam airborne ranger and AOL founding chairman

57

48

JULEANNA GLOVER Dick Cheney’s former press-aideturned-lobbyist was a premiere hostess during Bush II and she hasn’t slowed down a bit since the dawn of Obama. Her frequent fêtes are always jammed with young movers and shakers whom you simply must meet.

now champions various causes while serving as chairman of his own philanthropic foundation. Scoring an invite to one of his McLean mansion pool parties is a major coup in certain bachelor circles.

JACQUELINE MARS Notably private like the rest of her clan, this good natured candy heiress with a $10 billion fortune is a generous supporter of the Washington National Opera.

54

59

RON KLAIN & MONICA MEDINA The Veep’s lawyerly chief of staff and trusted confidant advises his boss on matters affecting all three branches of government. His wife is an environmental law specialist and high-ranking official at the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

55

TED & LYNN LEONSIS When he’s not producing issuesoriented “filmanthropy” flics, AOL’s vice chairman emeritus is busy cheering on his alma mater (Georgetown) or the Wizards and Capitals (which he co-owns). She sets an example with a quiet approach to supporting worthy causes.

56

ED MARKEY & SUSAN BLUMENTHAL The Bay State’s loquacious 17-term congressman gets kudos of late for his hard line on BP’s Gulf oil spill. He and his wife, a professor of medicine and retired rear admiral, get invited everywhere. At least one of them always turns up.

57

DAVID & CARRIE MARRIOTT Word on the street is that the free spirit hotel heir used to be a Grateful Deadhead, but settled down to help run the family empire. His pretty wife is equally blond and low key. One of the capital’s most attractive and generous young couples.

CAPRICIA & ROBERT MARSHALL Taking a tumble down the White House steps in May hasn’t stopped the new chief of protocol from managing official functions without a hitch. Having a handsome physician husband close by is a major plus.

60

CHRIS & KATHLEEN MATTHEWS He may play “Hardball,” but some say he’s really a softie at heart. Who wouldn’t be, when his wife is one of the capital’s most radiant and vivacious women?

61

JOHN CINDY & ROBERTA MCCAIN The 2008 GOP nominee and the ladies in his life make a splash wherever they go. Mama’s a major hoot when she speaks her mind – and it’s generally not off the record.

62

DENIS & KARI MCDONOUGH The National Security Council’s chief of staff is a Mideast expert who has advised the president on the expansion of ground forces in Afghanistan and other strategic foreign policy matters. Suggested chat topics over dessert and coffee also include terrorism, greenhouse gasses, and health care.

63

MIKE & DEBORAH MULLEN The Joint Chiefs chairman receives plaudits for his strategic thinking and rational assessments of complicated deployment and logistics problems in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s probably best not to ask about insubordinate generals or gays in the military just now.

64

JANET NAPOLITANO The low-profile homeland security secretary has bi-partisan cred (she is prochoice and pro-death penalty) and will certainly be in the limelight as the debate over immigration policy heats up.

19

65

WILLIAM NEWMAN & SHEILA JOHNSON She co-founded BET and now runs the Washington Mystics, specialty grocery stores, and

several resorts. He presides as chief judge of the Arlington County Circuit Court during the day. They hold court together at night.

66

BILL & ANN NITZE With all those family connections and a penchant for matchless hospitality, it’s no wonder this cultivated couple meet everyone who’s fabulous first. The rest of us have to wait for an invitation – and it’s often from them.

67

QUEEN NOOR Stylish, regal, pushing 60 and still ravishing, King Hussein’s widow maintains a presence on the social scene despite spending more time elsewhere – perhaps in search of the right consort.

68

NORAH O’DONNELL & GEOFF TRACY Norah talks the talk on NBC and MSNBC and it certainly doesn’t hurt that those big, blue Irish eyes are always smiling. Hubby “Chef Geoff” walks the walk, mostly in and out of his four metropolitan restaurants’ everbustling kitchens.

69

LEON & SYLVIA PANETTA Heads tilt and bodies bend whenever the magnetic CIA director stops by. No eavesdropping permitted!

70

NANCY & PAUL PELOSI The first female speaker of the House is plenty busy keeping her unruly colleagues in tow – and in the majority. She’s also a pretty good sport when it comes to adding luster to friends’ and colleagues’ events – even if it’s only a three-minute “power walk through.”

71

DAVID PLOUFFE & OLIVIA MORGAN Don’t expect to see President Obama’s chief campaign strategist on the party circuit anytime soon. He’s working full time to stave off a massive loss of Democratic congressional seats come November. Keep them on your Christmas party list.

72

JOHN AND MARY PODESTA Podesta helped plan the return of the Democrats in 2008 with years of deft masterstrokes but never took one of the plum positions he no doubt was offered. As head of the liberal Center for American Progress think tank, he continues to advise the Obama administration on numerous matters. A-latter day Richelieu without the cardinal’s hat.

37

68 tonlife.com

COLIN & ALMA POWELL Years after leaving public service, the former four-star general, Joint Chiefs chairman, and secretary of state still turns heads. He and his wife have been somewhat quiet of late, although they turn out occasionally to support favorite arts and education causes.

74

CATHERINE & WAYNE REYNOLDS With loads of lolly from a successful student loan business, this self-made millionaire and her husband maintain a high profile at major events, especially at the Kennedy Center where they are major contributors. She gets points for laughing off a recent roman à clef portraying a somewhat similar character as a latter day Lucretia Borgia.

75

JOE ROBERT JR An incomparably kind-hearted philanthropist, Robert hasn’t let his recent bout with brain cancer hinder his charity work one bit. Bless him.

76

JOHN & JANE ROBERTS The chief justice keeps his own counsel when stepping out to enjoy the odd opera or National Gallery dinner. Hint: Talking about sports or the weather is always appropriate.

77

ROXANNE ROBERTS & AMY ARGETSINGER Who’s In. Who’s Out. The Washington Post’s gossip gals take the pulse of the capital 24/7/365 and they have all the major players’ names on speed dial to prove it. You simply haven’t arrived if they’ve never boldfaced your name.

78

JOHN & SHARON ROCKEFELLER The fourth of the line to bear the world’s most plutocratic name may not be the richest member of the U.S. Senate, but he is one of the most compassionate and hard working. His wife, the daughter of former Illinois Sen. Charles Percy, never lets up in her crusade to foster public television.

79

SELWA “LUCKY” ROOSEVELT The longest-serving chief of protocol in U.S. history (seven years, for Ronald Reagan) is an au courant hostess, stalwart opera supporter, and a former journalist who pens erudite book reviews when the spirit moves.

80

DAVID & ALICE RUBENSTEIN Expect this Carlyle Group cofounder and his wife to set a record as they bestow a nice chunk of their $2.5 billion fortune on the Kennedy Center (where he now serves as chairman). Solid gold verging on platinum.

81

ROGER & VICKI SANT One of the capital’s most generous philanthropic couples and by all accounts the nicest. Their limitless generosity includes eight-figure gifts to the Smithsonian, National Symphony, and World Wildlife Fund, and to protect the Mesoamerican Reef. Can we clone them?

82

ANTONIN & MAUREEN SCALIA The “intellectual anchor of the Supreme Court’s conservative wing” is impervious to backlash among liberals who blame him for every 5-4 defeat and seethe at reports of his sing-alongs and stand-up comedy routines on camping trips. Tra-la-la!

83

KATHLEEN SEBELIUS The secretary of health and human services is key player in the unprecedented overhaul of the nation’s massive health-care system and should be sticking around when the changes are implemented. Her fine-tuning skills – honed as a two-term Democratic governor of Republican Kansas – will definitely come in handy.

84

SIR NIGEL & LADY JULIA SHEINWALD The British ambassador and his wife, a physician and children’s medicine specialist, have a palatial residence, a great new chef, and the occasional royal or prime minister to meet over Champers and Dover sole. Who would dream of saying no?

85

JONATHAN SILVER & MELISSA MOSS He: a venture capitalist who now doles out grants and loans as the energy department’s “money man.” She: a consumer advocate who gets notice for entertaining beautifully in their grand Georgetown home.

86

JULIANA SMOOT Don’t expect the personable new White House social secretary to be swanning around the White House in Jean-Paul Gautier gowns and Manolo Blahniks anytime soon – at least not until two or three state dinners go off without a hitch.

87

DAN & TANYA SNYDER The Redskins’ owner holds court with blonde and beautiful Tanya in his

Olympian skybox, apart from merely mortal fans who hope against hope, and keep on hoping, for a winning season. Keep those thumbs up, folks.

88

Nice Guys Ed Burns makes a difference supporting independent film; Ronald Kessler hasn’t given up on selling his Secret Service exposé to Hollywood. B Y J A N E T D O N O VA N

INDIE FILM EVENT Controversial director and film maker Oliver Stone crossed paths this summer with nice guy Ed Burns. Stone was in town for his latest documentary South of The Border on the epic greed of Wall Street, and Burns was here for his new indie comedy flick Nice Guy Johnny. The two have crossed paths on more than one occasion. “My very first job in the film business was with Oliver Stone,” Burns said.“I was a P.A. on the doors for five days on a shoot in New York. My only contact with Oliver came when I picked him up at JFK to drive him to his hotel in New York. I never got close enough to the action in the next five days. That was it.” Burns was the guest of honor at “An Evening Celebrating Independent Film & Television” hosted by Comcast and Tribeca Enterprises at the Newseum. The laid-back actor strolled into the reception with no intention of taking over the space; instead, he mingled quietly and freely among guests that included “The Newshour’s” Judy Woodruff, Maryland Attorney General Douglas Gansler, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Clad in casual attire that included jeans and boots, he was incredibly handsome and sans attitude. Burns had come to talk about independent films and why he has chosen that path over Hollywood blockbusters. “I have been making independent films for over 15 years and this is my ninth,” he said. “In film school, Woody Allen was one of my early gods. What I got from those filmmakers that I didn’t get from Hollywood was that they were personal storytellers. Summer Surprises Ambassadorial leave-taking and a long-awaited swearing-in BY GAIL SCOTT

ANN STOCK’S GLOBAL ASSIGNMENT It took nine months to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, but Ann Stock is now assistant secretary of state for education and cultural affairs. In the “it’s a small world” category where one thing leads to another, Courtney and Scott were married at the governor’s U.S. exports in the next five years to support mansion in Olympia two years ago and are two million new jobs. Scott is choosing his words carefully. “It’s different now that Courtney has gone big time and is the director of such an important initiative,” he says. “Some people are a little intimidated.” Courtney smiles uncomfortably at the comment, but lets it pass. After spending a semester at American University, Courtney extended her stay in Washington to work with the Domestic Policy Council in the Clinton White House before resuming her undergraduate studies in Oregon. After law school, she returned to the District to become legislative director and chief counsel for Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). being appointed to her present position. Courtney says her focus has always been on public policy and health care issues. Now that she is working for Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco J. Sánchez, her focus is on trade issues and their domestic repercussions for American business. “I need to think creatively to support American jobs and emphasize what exports mean to the U.S. economy,” she explains. She rattles off statistics with the enthusiasm of a new appointee pleased to be getting a handle on her area of expertise. “Only one percent of small and medium [U.S.] companies’ export,” she says, “and of that number, 58 percent export to only one market. Before the recession, the U.S. was seeing a growth in trade, representing 13 percent of GDP [Gross Domestic Product] and supporting 10.3 million jobs.We are trying to educate companies [that] have never looked to export.” As far as working the demanding but important Washington, D.C. social circuit, Courtney admits she has a lot to learn. “We are two kids from Washington State breaking into a more formal life and sometimes I still forget my business cards,” she says. “I’m working on that.”

WA S H I N G T O N L I F E

Courtney has been traveling in the U.S. and anticipates more international travel in the coming year due to her new position. There are trade offices in 129 embassies, she points out, noting that she plans to produce a report in six months that will suggest ways to double exports. “What are the challenges? What are the trade barriers? Where are the emerging markets?” Those are questions she says she will be attempting to answer. Her father, Michael Gregoire (who refers

to himself as “First Mike”), retired as a healthcare investigator in the criminal justice division of the state attorney general’s office when his wife became governor. Courtney’s younger sister, Michelle, will be attending law school at the University of Washington this fall. Coming from a political family, Courtney believes that an electoral campaign could be in her future. “I enjoy politics,” she explains. “There is a pull to have a family back in Washington and to be near them. My mother

balanced those challenges and put family first.” (Christine Gregoire had been the state’s attorney general before running for governor.) “I wonder if I can balance it as elegantly as she does.” Scott also admits to feeling a pull to politics since going to work on Capitol Hill. He has been traveling to Middle East war zones on security and transportation issues. He admits he was skeptical about working on the Hill at first, but that his experiences with the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have stimulated his interest in running for office back home one day. Scott and Courtney describe themselves as athletic – both were soccer players in high school and played intramural soccer in college. They snow and water ski and at the time of their interview said they were planning to spend the August slowdown period climbing 14,411-foot Mt. Rainier in addition to some vacation time with both their families back home. “We will need the relaxation,” Courtney said, “because we do expect the fall to be a professional and a social sprint.”

INNOCENTS AT RISK

Progress in the Fight Against Human Trafficking BY REP CHRIS SMITH R-NJ

his year is a milestone in the fight against human trafficking: the tenth anniversary of the enactment of the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), which I authored, and the U.N. Palermo Protocol. The U.S. has accomplished a lot over the last decade. Among the many tools mandated by the TVPA is the annual Trafficking in Persons Report published by the State Department. This study utilizes a tier system to track almost every country’s progress in a aining the standards for combating trafficking through prevention, protection, and prosecution. We have seen multiple countries move from the worst status, Tier 3, to become Tier 1 countries — the

62

best rating. Tier 1 countries o en plateau when there is a consistent demand for victims, making trafficking lucrative for organized crime, and too prevalent for law enforcement to stamp out. We must increase public awareness and work to end the demand that drives trafficking. I must note the commi ed and compassionate efforts of volunteer organizations such as Innocents at Risk and Airline Ambassadors, many of whom are employed in the airline industry. They have pioneered measures to identify victims being transported via airlines, and report the activities to authorities. Join Innocents at Risk at its fall benefit on Monday, September 13 at the Embassy of Canada.

Summer Sagas A former Miss D.C.’s story, Gertrude d’Amecourt dancing at 100, and a brotherly Michael Jackson tribute BY DONNA SHOR

TRUE FAIRY TALE Once upon a time, two sisters came to Washington, so beautiful that each was named Miss District of Columbia. Marsha Metrinko returned home to win the Miss New York title. Michele Metrinko was crowned Miss USA, earned her degree from Georgetown University, and practiced law. Earlier, she had met John Rollins, a successful businessman, former Delaware lieutenant governor – and 30 years her senior. But this was no “blonde cutie snags rich older tycoon” scenario. They fell in love, and when they married she already knew his fortunes were in meltdown. Hoping to develop a luxury hotel, he had sunk $2.5 million into the dilapidated but historic Rose Hall Plantation in Montego Bay, Jamaica. (A 16,000 acre sugar plantation, Rose Hall was owned in the 18th century by a tiny Frenchwoman, Annie Palmer, the legendary “White Witch,” who subdued her slaves with whips and voodoo, and probably murdered her three husbands.) Rollins’ dream of a luxury hotel wasn’t an easy goal; Jamaican tourism was not yet established. Aided by Michele’s staunch support, (while raising their four children), her hard work and savvy business sense, he got back on his feet, and their efforts were soon rewarded. They finally restored Rose Hall, brought a Holiday Inn, a Wyndham, and a Ritz-Carlton to the property, and built a whole village complete with schools and health care to better the lives of their employees. The Palmyra

BLAZING CANDLES Ge#ing invited to Gertrude d’Amecourt’s 100th birthday party was tantamount to a royal summons, which explains why so many local and international friends (including more than a few titled grandees) joined family members to observe the occasion at best pal Lolo Sarnoff’s art-filled home. “WE COULDN’T KEEP IT SIMPLE” Originally planned as an intimate gathering of friends and relatives, Olga Hirshhorn’s 90th birthday bash soon blossomed into a grand banquet with prominent art world personalities, dancers, singers, and a postdessert disco scene with a live band and flashing lights. VERY SPECIAL LADY Organizers Jim Demetrion, Carole Feld, and Robert Lehrman joined far-flung family members in praising the guest of honor’s compassion, humor, business acumen, arts philanthropy, and ability to keep up at tennis until the age of 85. “As long as I can stand at a cocktail party,” the birthday gal noted with a laugh, “I’m ahead of the game.”

Yearlings and Fresh Greens Hunt Country folk flock to Saratoga Springs for racing and the yearling sales; top-notch produce is major draw at the Middleburg Farmers Market BY VICKY MOON

PA-TAC-U-LAR: As summer sizzled,

S

many from Middleburg migrated to cooler climes for a bit of racing and a lot of partying in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. (a.k.a “the Spa”). It all got off to a grand start when Shelly and Phil Duke co-hosted a cocktail party for friends of the Marion du Pont Scott Equine Medical Center at the fabulous Fifth Avenue home of newspaper heiress Peggy Steinman. Charles Steger, president of Virginia Tech, flew in for the event and was able to reminisce about his days as a Tech undergraduate with his old roommate, Wayne Chatfield-Taylor, who had come with his wife, Susie, to keep an eye on the horse scene. Also attending: Beth and Doug Fout (he trains for Steinman), trainer Barbara Graham, Sharon Maloney, and Joseph Keusch along with wife Jan Neuharth who was in town to sign copies of her new book, The Kill: A Hunt Country Suspense Novel. At the annual yearling sales, celebrity “Iron Chef ” Bobby Flay threw down $625,000 for one filly and $190,000 for another on the opening night of what now resembles a lively lawn party held on the equivalent of the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The sales topper was a colt by A.P. Indy for $1.2 million. And then there was the belle of it all, Mary Lou Whitney, who arrived at her annual “do” along with husband John Hendrickson in a vintage New York taxicab. The theme for the 400 guests was a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” gala at the historic Canfield Casino. The next afternoon they were both in the winner’s circle to present the Whitney Stakes trophy to Adele Dilschneider and Claiborne Farm, the owners of Blame who upset Ned Evans’ big horse, Quality Road, at the wire. Living Small

Glen Ackerman has learned how to live large in a small Washington space

orn in New Orleans, Glen Ackerman lived in the “The Big Easy” until his early twenties. His first job out of college took him to San Francisco, and he has city-hopped through Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Tampa and Clearwater Beach, Fla., until his law practice brought him to Washington on a regular basis. On a hot and humid summer day I met Glen at his new apartment in Penn Quarter. “I am back and forth from Clearwater several times a month,” he says. “It will be much more efficient to travel without having to check in an out of hotels all the time. I’ll have everything I need to conduct business in Washington right here.” The task appeared straightforward: renovate the interior of an outdated, one-bedroom apartment. However, the request was not so simple when it came to providing space for living, dining, sleeping, and storage – not to mention making it uncluttered, comfortable, and filled with light.

88

We quickly learned the space had to work like the mechanism of a watch, so we set some ground rules. No two things could serve the same purpose – but everything had to accommodate more than one – and combine both its functional and aesthetic qualities. In other words, the architecture of the space and the interior design had to be the same. Having so many walls in small spaces only make smaller, darker spaces, so he took down, opened up, and consolidated. Now, the only enclosed area is the bathroom. The rest of the apartment is open to light, which spans the width of the apartment. By move-in day, Washington was Glen’s permanent residence. He decided this smaller, yet efficiently-designed space provided everything he needed to live comfortably. “I live halfway between the White House and the Capitol; the Mall is a block away, and all the amenities of Penn Quarter are right outside my front door. With the city as your living room who needs more space?”
