ur October issue has become an indispensable guide to all things diplomatic in the nation’s capital over the years. Where else can you find so many interesting details about the men and women who serve as their nations’ official representatives here, to say nothing of the essential information you’ll need to contact them at their embassies and places of residence?

There is much more to it than that, of course, and we must thank our contributing editor Gail Scott for helping our team add some special features this year, including a tribute to diplomatic grande dame Esther Coopersmith, essential protocol tips and a look inside a few of the most recent (and exclusive) Embassy Row fêtes.

We visited with some of the most intriguing envoys, including Ambassador of Grenada Gillian M.S. Bristol, whose determination to shine a brighter light on her native land makes her an up-and-comer among her diplomatic peers. In addition, the dashing Mexican ambassador, Arturo Sarukhan, shares observations about his favorite Washington places with our readers.

While our party coverage often takes us to various embassies, consulates and ambassadorial residences, we were fortunate to get an inside look at the marvellously eclectic home of the ambassador of Columbia, one of the carefully selected sites on this year’s acclaimed Woodrow Wilson House Embassy Row Tour. Writer Soo Kim explores the historical and architectural features that make it a special part of the nation’s capital.

While we may have been preoccupied with all things diplomatic, we’ve also managed to keep to our social schedule by making the rounds at some of the season’s most luminous parties. We grooved at the Thelo-

nious Monk Gala, put on our dancing shoes for LUNGevity’s Celebration of Hope, dressed in our black-tie best for the Washington National Opera’s opening celebration and lifted a glass at the second annual Standing Ovation for D.C. Teachers. With gala season in full swing, there’s hardly a minute to rest. Join us next month as we circulate through the Washington Ballet’s Great Gatsby celebration, the Meridian Ball, CharityWorks Dream Ball and many other events of note.

I end on a sad note about a dear friend. Over the years, we covered Kara Kennedy and her best friend, Linda Semans Donovan, at various events, including their 40th and 50th birthday parties.

Kara knew my husband, Soroush, from his college days and she was present the night we met.When we had a baby after years of trying, she wanted to visit us in hospital but in the end the visiting hours conflicted with one of her many volunteer commitments. This defined Kara, who was shy but also lots of fun and one of the most genuinely thoughtful and good-hearted people I have ever known. Linda and Kara’s brother, Ted Kennedy Jr., spoke so eloquently at her funeral and we remember her here with a few excerpts from their eulogies. She will always have a special place in our hearts.

without a liquor license, the much-anticipated Shaw’s Tavern flo closed after only a week. rida av en Dinner: The closing has caused a ue nw nasty back-and-forth over the liquor license acquisition process in D.C. on the local and national stage.The tavern apparently failed to get the special one-day liquor license for a charity event they held before securing a permanent license.

Dessert: Authorities are expected to deliver a verdict on a permanent license within 90 days, but in the meantime, restaurant-hungry Shaw residents just have to wait.

What Is one unexpected thing Grenadians and Americans have in common? With our shared history, Grenada and the United States have more in common than we would think, but it might surprise some Americans to know that one of their national sports, basketball, is also one of the most popular sports in Grenada. Atlanta Hawks center Etan Thomas is a Grenadian national! We just have to get Americans to play cricket and Grenadians to play baseball.

It may be surprisING to some that you are on twitter. How has being an ambassador changed in the digital age? Multitasking has been redefined with digital interface, making communication instantaneous, which in turn means that I can meet deadlines and increase efficiency. But this also raises expectations, significantly increasing the demand on my time. After a few months on the job, I had to learn to use the silent button on my Blackberry, although I still don’t dare turn it off completely even while I am asleep.

What Is the most challenging part of your job? Convincing others that while Grenada is a developing country it is seeking partnership with other nations and investors, not a handout. It is equally challenging educating others about a micro economy (U.S. $750 million) where even a small investment can have a significant impact.

You’re undoubtedly very busy. With several portfolios, a very small embassy staff (two diplomats including myself) and being a single parent, striking a balance between work and my personal life is extremely challenging. Nonetheless I try to find time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

I am an avid reader and fan of the dramatic arts, sports and travel. I also love to entertain at home.

Your personal philosophy.

There are no problems in life, only challenges. With a positive outlook, faith and respect for others we can erase obstacles and achieve even our most improbable dreams.

“Ordered to unfurl the sails in a snowstorm, his hands got so cold that he couldn’t hold on and he fell. But a line caught him and

dropped him gently onto the deck, otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting here talking to you.”

Whom do you admire the most?

So many ideas have been lifted from that book. It’s like the source code for modern science fiction. “King of the Cats” by Wil Haygood about Adam Clayton Powell. It taught me a lot about politics when I was in my early 20s.

Q: You have been actively involved in journalism over the years. You have been a successful TV personality and have written several books. What inspired you to write a play?

A: While I was writing “From Rage to Reason, My Life In Two Americas,” I was casually chastised by a friend for wanting to speak about the past and what my experience has been as a black woman in a white man’s world. She thought such a discussion would be “unbecoming,” given my personal and professional success. I was struck by the irony that she expected me to be sympathetic to her people’s past, while she remained willfully indifferent to mine. “The Diary of Anne Frank” was mandatory reading when I was a young girl and it forced me to confront the Holocaust, a period of European history that

will forever remain an ineradicable stain on mankind. I wanted to know why the horrors of slavery, Jim Crow laws and lynchings, segregation and persistent racism were not worthy of recollection and reflection? I said nothing at the time, but later that night, went home and vented my anger by imagining how Anne Frank might have responded to the question of whether my history was worthy of discussion. In my mind’s eye I saw Anne engaging in a conversation with Emmett Till, a young black boy who was brutally murdered in Mississippi for whistling at a white woman.

Q: The story of the murder of Emmett Till was a flash point in the fight for civil rights in America. It brought the senselessness and brutality of racism in the South into the living

rooms of America. “The Diary of Anne Frank” personalized the horrors of the Holocaust.

How did you come to connect these two historical figures as the main characters of your play, “Anne & Emmett”?

A: While Anne and Emmett couldn’t be more different in their race, ethnicity, location and education, they both became victims of institutionalized hatred. The tactics of the haters in our lives are surprisingly common and quite identifiable. They begin with hateful speech, the dehumanization of any and all who are different, followed by their degradation, domination and destruction. The language of the haters may change, but their message is always the same. They don’t have to wear armbands or white hoods to signal their membership in the ranks of sociopaths. They can cover their true identities with business or

casual suits, use coded language and denounce any who dare to look behind their words and see the villainy that lurks there. The codes of conduct forced upon Jewish people in Europe and those for African-Americans here in America were virtually the same.

Q: What is the message that you are trying to convey to your audiences with this imaginary dialogue?

A: I want everyone, but especially young people, to be aware of the dangers that hateful speech and conduct pose. My older cousin, Jimmy, was lynched for refusing to give up his land to a white man who wanted it. My young niece, Myrna, was murdered by a hate monger while she was singing in a church choir. When my father came home from fighting Hitler’s Nazis and liberating Jewish people from those unspeakable concentration camps, he could not wear his uniform in the South for fear of

being beaten or lynched. And for those who think that racism and anti-Semitism is dead, they should have been at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on June 10, 2009, the date when “Anne & Emmett” was to have debuted. James Von Brunn, an 88year-old, white racist and anti-Semite walked into that hallowed place and murdered Officer Stephen Tyrone Johns, an innocent, black security guard.Von Brunn was dismissed as just a lone wolf, a crazy old man who didn’t reflect the thoughts or actions of a larger segment of society. But he was the same kind of man who was a “Night Rider” who terrorized me as a child when I visited my family in Kentucky. He was part of those who live in the underbelly of society and stir a witch’s brew of poisonous venom and violent hatred.

He was part of those who wrap themselves in the American flag while saluting Hitler’s Nazi flag and the KKK’s burning cross.

Q: For whom did you write this play, and by that I mean which audiences did you try to reach with the message of Anne and Emmett?

A: I wrote the play primarily to touch the consciences of young people, but have found that it resonates powerfully with older generations as well. I want young people, not only to remember our common experiences, but to take action, to stop the haters and the bullies before they take refuge in their numbers or rationalize that they are just exercising their Constitutional rights. The free expression of ideas, however vile and hateful those ideas may be, should be protected. But when speech becomes advocacy and urges others to take violent action or incites others to give form to their words, then I believe it’s important for each of us to stand up and speak out against the Hitlers and the haters who wear the mask of freedom. In essence, “Anne & Emmett” is a call to action.

D

iplomacy is a gypsy profession; those who enter this international army of thinkers and speakers promote their countries while keeping unfriendly nations at bay. When diplomats “join up,” they sign on for duty far from home, for inexact periods that don’t necessarily coincide with their spouses’ career moves, vacations and their children’s school schedules.

These political science wonks and economic whiz kids learn to live like turtles, carrying their homes with them as they repeatedly set up housekeeping on other continents many time zones from home. Bringing up children abroad is a real art; so is finding new friends and appearing to feel instantly “at home” when you aren’t.

When it’s time to leave, sometimes with little if any notice, they pack their bags, gracefully say farewell and move on to create a new life all over again.

As we enjoyed the beach or mountains this summer, many of our foreign friends were packing their bags for good. There was no opporunity to organize the customary farewell parties. Then they were gone. Friendship interruptus!

As we prepared to dive into the fall social season, we were utterly surprised to find that many of our diplomatic favorites had departed … their replacements already in place.

Sometimes we’re the ungraceful ones. After all, it’s hard to

instantly welcome the latest envoy waiting to be credentialed when we are still coping with the loss of dear friends.

This time it was a “sea change.” Many more than usual of the most highly popular and successful ambassadors had left.

After nearly a decade at the epicenter of social and political Washington, Moroccan Amb. Aziz Mekouar and his popular wife, Maria Felice, had only two weeks to pack up! India’s Meera Shankar and her husband Ajay quietly slipped away as did envoys from Germany, Finland, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Croatia and Malta. Now Iceland and Austria are heading home as well.

Our old address books are a crossed-out mess and our hearts are skipping a beat.

Thanks to email, Skype, faster-than-ever international travel and a 24-hour global news cycle, our world is smaller than ever and it’s likely we will see our old friends again, or, at least, be able to follow their lives and continue our friendships as digital pen pals.

Over the years of too many good-byes, I’ve learned from these brave global citizens that it’s harder on us than it is on them. At least, that’s what they think. As one diplomatic wife gently told me, “From the moment we arrive on American soil until the day we leave, we know we are only here for a short time. It is all of you who forget.”

DIPLOMATIC ROCK STARS The ambassador of Indonesia and his glamorous wife follow their destiny to new heights on Embassy Row

A

lready famous in their exotic homeland, Dino and Rosa Djalal arrived in Washington like flash lightening. Rarely do an ambassador and spouse make a splash so fast, especially when they are brand new to diplomacy.

Official Washington was soon buzzing about this highly effective and talented couple, who work hard to represent modern Indonesia, the world’s third largest democracy and the world’s largest Muslimmajority country. Today the expansive Pacific archipelago cuts as wide a geographic swath as the entire continent of Europe. This exotic land of unlimited natural beauty consists of more than 17,500 islands, 33 provinces and three different time zones, with 240 million inhabitants practicing five main religions and speaking hundreds of dialects within one national language.

Back home, “Dino” (as he will immediately request you address him) is a handsome and dynamic rising star, well known as the long-time presidential spokesman for Indonesia’s first elected, and now two-term President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Amb. Djalal’s “inspirational” national bestseller, “Harus Bisa!” (“The Can Do Leadership”), became a TV show and is used in the training curriculum of Indonesia’s foreign ministry, military and national police.This thoroughly modern diplomat, who graduated from McLean High School at 15 when his father was ambassador here, and earned a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, uses an I-Pad for his speech notes, regularly “tweets” on Twitter and maintains his own personal website.

There are more than whispers about the political potential and ambition of this diplomatic son, who got a dishwashing job at the embassy during his father’s era so he could afford a trip to Hawaii with his high school chums. Now, as ambassador, Dino Djalal doesn’t deny his quest to finish his public career in “something other than diplomacy.”

His beautiful wife, Rosa, is the mother of their three young children and a dentist with a master’s degree in Hospital Administration. She remains active in Indonesia despite living here. As founding and managing partner of two all-purpose dental clinics employing nine specialists from orthodontists to aesthetic dental surgeons, she runs her operation via early morning emails (Jakarta is 11 hours ahead) and a two-hour Skype call to Jakarta every other Sunday night from their official residence on Tunlaw Road NW. Rosa Djalal is also the founder of the Al Hamid Foundation which provides free education for 250 elementary school students each year in Banten Province; sits on the board of Mutu Manikam Nusantara, the nonprofit organization that aims to enhance

Indonesia’s jewelry industry; and is one of the founders of Perhimpunan Kebayaku (or My Kebaya Association) which promotes Indonesia’s national dress, the Kebaya, and other traditional cultures and customs of her country.When you meet her, it will not surprise you that this former Miss Indonesia was also first runner-up for Miss World in 1995.

Married only seven and a half years, the Djalal’s have three children: Alexa, 6; Keanu, 5; and Chloe, 4, who enjoyed their first Halloween in America accompanied by their parents who also donned costumes for the annual “Trick or Treat” ritual even though they had to leave the next day for the 22-hour trip back to Jakarta to prepare for President Obama’s visit to the land he once called home.

ay the name “Esther” in VIP circles and everyone immediately knows whom you mean: Esther Coopersmith — the smalltown girl from Wisconsin who started out as a fresh-faced assistant to Sen. Estes Kefauver and wound up serving as President Bill Clinton’s “global ambassador” and representative to the UN and UNESCO. She’s been an under-theradar advisor to numerous U.S. presidents (she’s known every one since Truman), monarchs, world political and religious leaders, Cabinet secretaries and members of Congress, ambassadors and Hollywood stars.

An invitation to Coopersmith’s palatial Kalorama residence for a command performance seated dinner (she “hates” little hors d’oeuvres) is one Washington invitation you don’t turn down. Those so favored have Herbie Hancock, Kevin learned to covet the “Inside Circle” status Euba nks and Wayne Shorter that Esther’s friendship confers. At 80, she’s best known for going around the room and introducing every single guest in a clever, colorful “Esther-esque” sentence or two, summing up each person’s personality and Quntell Woilliams and position without so much as one written note in Robin Carter her hand or sour comment from her lips. A proud Democrat who always has room for everyone at the table, Coopersmith just wishes “everyone would start talking with each other like they used to.” She pronounces this lack of social discourse as nothing short of terrible. “We have real problems to figure out,” she says, “and we can only do that together.”

A former TASS arts and cultural correspondent, this wellcoifed Russian and her husband are ardent supporters of the arts and have hosted many cultural organizations here, but if you really want to make a home run, ask these proud grandparents about their only grandchild Polina, or “Polya” (as her babushka and dedushka lovingly call her).

This 7-year-old used to live with them in the “Pullman Mansion” on 16th Street and play on weekends at the Russian dacha on the Eastern Shore. The conversation can start with Cabbage Patch Dolls and move to Stoddard Elementary.

Dynamic Chileans Make a Difference A new diplomatic family exhibits grace under pressure

O

nly a few months after their midsummer arrival, Chilean Ambassador Arturo Fermandois and his vibrant wife Carolina faced one of the biggest crises in the history of their country. Thirty three Chilean miners were trapped 2,000 feet below the earth’s surface with little prospect of making it out alive.

For the rescue, Ambassador Fermandois had a giant TV set up in his embassy’s own front yard for the live feed from Chile, a move that brought public diplomacy to the sidewalks of Washington. The bold, public viewing not only demonstrated Chile’s transparency, but it also made an early and lasting impression for Chile and the Ambassador himself on those in Embassy Row and beyond.

Yet the young Latin diplomat is far more than his ingenious efforts to bring support and attention to his country; he has varied personal interests and is a veteran of

two rock bands. He charmed everyone with his guitar playing and singing on the State Department’s fall trip to Alaska and became known throughout Washington’s diplomatic corps for his bold decisions under pressure.

While some of his colleagues were said to be envious, others marveled at his instant “star status” and the grace with which he handled difficult decisions early in his ambassadorship.

His wife Carolina, a PTA Mom at Little Flower in Bethesda, thinks often of their first tests in Washington, noting in particular that the miner’s rescue gave this first-time diplomatic family an “instant bonding experience” with the embassy staff, as everyone worked together in crisis mode. She reflects, “We inherited a great team, and we quickly got to know and trust each other. They help me so much in everything I do.”

Arturo Sarukhan, Ambassador of Mexico Washington has a unique place in my life. I obtained a master’s degree here, worked at the Mexican Embassy during the 1990s as chief of staff to the ambassador and then met my wife Veronica (who obtained her B.A. in Washington). I picked up my allergies to pollen here, and now have a daughter, our second, who was born at Sibley Hospital. Veronica and I, in fact, were pioneers of Washington’s urban renaissance, when, after dating for some time, we decided to move into a brownstone at 14th and Corcoran Street NW in 1997.

What is the most important part of your mission in Washington?

Underscoring how uniquely important Mexico and the U.S. are to each other’s prosperity, well-being and security, and that citizens on both sides of the border need to understand that they must become costakeholders of the strategic relationship we are developing.

What do you like best about living in the United States?

The sense of boundless energy and possibility and the Americans’ ability to laugh about themselves. I wish many more societies, including my own, would understand the bracing effects and social, political and philosophical underpinnings of a good roast like the Gridiron Club dinner or the Bill Mahers and Jon Stewarts of America’s public opinion landscape.

2. BRIDGES ON THE POTOMAC AND OVER ROCK CREEK PARK I enjoy the stunning

architecture of the Key Bridge, Dumbarton (or “Buffalo”) Bridge (shown above), Memorial Bridge and William Howard Taft Bridge. Can you imagine the sight if the city were to light them up at night?

How have you been promoting Mexican art and culture here?

Aggressively and continuously, both through traditional mediums like art exhibits, film or gastronomy, and new social media platforms. As the first ambassador to tweet in Washington, I believe cultural promotion is a perfect fit for these new instruments of an interconnected world.

Grace Bender sets a new standard for gala glamour, Lynda Webster’s gathering of the tribe and a dance-worthy Ambassadors Ball

No question, Grace Bender raised the bar for all ball chairwomen when she spearheaded the bold debut of LUNGevity’s Musical Celebration of Hope, which included masses of flowers, a delectable dinner in a ballroom veiled with shafts of soft-colored light and music, music, music everywhere.

It couldn’t have been easy to sell out the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium for a new cause (lung cancer) in this charity-surfeited town.

Really, Grace, you had a lot of nerve! Then to amass $1 million from the newbie event.

Startling! And to create such a lovely evening, with every detail perfection – what are we coming to?

A dozen dinner-jacketed violinists lined the entry stairs with a harpist serenading during cocktails. With dinner came a solo pianist followed by an orchestra that played very danceable but well-modulated tunes that actually permitted conversation, so rare at a gala.

The dinner: crab, lobster and avocado salad, grilled rack of lamb and fresh peach ice cream

cake was served on carefully chosen table settings, with excellent wines in tall Venetian glasses worthy of the Doge’s Palace.

The evening was inspired by the late Pat Stern, a lung cancer victim and a warm and charming woman, dear to many. Her husband, Dr. Paul Stern, and his family, underwrote the evening, so the entire proceeds will fund lung cancer research to save others. Their daughter, Andrea Stern Ferris, CEO and founder of LUNGevity, evoked her mother’s spirit in telling us of the work ahead.

Lynda and Mary’s summer story? These always-elegant women, only a few days before donning skirts and heels for the coffee, were camping out while fly-fishing on a Colorado river, no makeup and hair flying in the wind.

The 33rd Ambassadors Ball honored the diplomatic corps and benefited the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell emceed the program that included performances by two local ethnic dance groups and The Wright Touch dance band. ARPAN Kathak Dance Academy’s lead dancer, Bratati Saha, said the classic Kathak, a story-telling style, came from the nomadic bards, or storytellers, of Northern India more than 1,000 years ago. The Kardelen Turkish Dance Ensemble is named after a tiny Anatolian mountain flower that manages to survive in difficult surroundings. Earnings from the group’s performances sustain its work to help children struggling to survive.

The co-chairwomen were Lisa Collis and Amey Upton, with Esther Coopersmith serving as diplomatic chairman. Sens. Kay Hagan and Johnny Isakson, and Reps. Barbara Lee and Kevin McCarthy received awards.

GLOBAL COOKS AT THE WORLD BANK Philanthropist Irene Pollin created the Sister

to Sister Foundation to spread nutrition information to limit obesity, a major risk factor for heart disease, the number one killer of women around the world.

At the World Bank, chefs from five countries cooked heart-healthy meals on different days as part of the foundation’s program. On the day sponsored by the Royal Thai Embassy, Nuchjaree Klongsungsom, wife of the Thai ambassador, presented Warin Tepayayone, a dancer from the local Somapa Thai Dance Company who entertained with grace and style.

Social Swirls and Charity Chukkers The Hunt Country closes out the season with polo, a garden club brunch and celebrating a local legend’s recent memoir.

T

he last charity polo matches of the season came to pass at Great Meadow for the 25th Annual Commonwealth Cup, presented

by Nespresso, with the usual bevy of gorgeous, globetrotting players from England, Scotland, Argentina and Chile.

There was an even larger flock of fascinating female fans, of course, along with patrons Maite and Kevin Dougherty, Tammy and Juan Salinas-Bentley and Dea and Beau Van Metre (whose daughter Ashley played for the U.S.).

All were gathered in a large white tent on the end of the field for a luncheon catered by Outback Steakhouse (think Bloomin’ Onions) and hosted by Nespresso Grand Cru coffee Vice President Michelle McFaul. The U.S. defeated Great Britain 8-7 with proceeds benefiting the British Forces Foundation, USO and the Wounded Warriors Family Support Mission.

and lecture on “Putting Style in Your Garden” by designer Jon Carloftis who shared anecdotes about his notable clients and signed copies of his book, “Beautiful Gardens of Kentucky.”

Sponsored by the Piedmont Garden Club, the event was orchestrated by club president Nicky Perry and executed by Aline Day, Lynn Wiley, Beth Benhard and Peggy Richardson. The day ended with a tranquil sunset supper by the pool for Carloftis, his partner Dale Fisher and the committee members at Peggy and John Richardson’s Oakwood Farm.

One of the most charming aspects of life in Middleburg is the presence of so many creative people from all walks of life. Octogenarian Burns Robertson is certainly one of them.

Fondly called “Mr. Burns” by local residents, he recently published an eponymously titled book recalling his days growing up at “The Mill” (the old Jay Phipps Estate), attending Boy Scout meetings at the Red Fox and dabbling in the race horse business. For many years he served

such celebrity clients as Isabel Dodge Sloane, Liz Busch Burket, Liz Whitney Tippett, candy mogul Forrest E. Mars and weatherman Willard Scott from his service station in Middleburg and later in Upperville. Now retired and living near Myrtle Beach, S.C., “Mr. Burns” recently returned to hunt country for a signing at Second Chapter Books. “He continues to bring a spark of life to those who know him,” his daughter Suzie Robertson noted.

Another talented Middleburg native, L.A.-based event planner Virginia Fout, briefly settled in at her family’s Cloverdale Farm while orchestrating the Oct. 8 National Sporting Library and Museum Gala. She will create a “sporting look” décor with elegantly tailored touches including pewter linens and centerpieces of roses and hydrangea that will be illuminated by special pin spot lights to make them “pop.” Antique equestrian etchings printed on fabric and sporting and fishing memorabilia shadow boxes will serve as table and bar tops.

Fout is also handling Elton John’s AIDS benefit Oscars party in Los Angeles next year.

Constantly multitasking, she’s also masterminding design aspects of the Environmental Media Awards at Warner Brothers and a memorial service for Elizabeth Taylor just days before she expects to become a first time mother.

Finally, Betsee Parker opened “Huntland” to members of the Middleburg and Piedmont hunts to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the completion of the estate’s palatial stables and kennels. Originally built by Joseph Thomas, a founding member of the American Foxhound Club, master of the Piedmont Foxhounds and author of the definitive “Hounds and Hunting Through the Ages,” the 129-acre historic property was purchased by Parker in 2007 and has since been restored.

resident Woodrow Wilson’s Washington residence perches along the northwest corridor of Massachusetts Avenue next to a collection of over a dozen embassies and ambassadorial residences.

Coincidentally, the American president who encouraged the establishment of a League of Nations and drafted the Fourteen Points for Peace laid his final home in what has since developed into a neighborhood of nation-states.

Woodrow Wilson House, which is located in the heart of Embassy Row and has been preserved as Washington’s first and only presidential museum, now extends the legacy of the deceased president.

Every year, gracious neighbors in the historic Sheridan-Kalorama district allow Woodrow Wilson House to organize an open-house tour, so visitors can admire embassy residences. These intimate views inside the private homes of ambassadors provide a special dimension to the backdrop of international culture and politics in the nation’s capital.

The tour has helped raise nearly a million dollars over almost three decades to maintain the presidential museum. The tour occurs annually on the second Sunday in September. In the past four years, every tour has featured different residences.

This year, close to a thousand people visited the residences of the ambassadors of Costa Rica, Cypress and the European Union. The magnificent jewel of the tour,

however, belonged to Colombian Ambassador Gabriel Silva.

The house on 20th Street NW, constructed in 1901, prefaced an aesthetic movement of building and beautification in Washington. Before residents of the city could have predicted the Great Depression looming in the decades ahead, the streets pulsed with potential. Luxury apartment buildings and downtown office structures reflected a change in economic and social patterns in Washington. Commercial and cultural activities were melding in the nation’s capital and demand for extravagant residences began the evolution of the city into “the Versailles of the new world.”

The aristocratic French lineage of American-raised Jules Henri de Sibour made it highly likely that he would be the primary architect to pioneer the boom. He was Washington society’s stately architect du jour, and the houses along Embassy Row bear his signature. In fact, a walk down Massachusetts Avenue reflects the perfect pairing of French influences and the American dream. He eventually went on to design the current residences of the ambassadors of France, Luxembourg, Portugal and the Canadian Chancery.

The façade of the Colombian ambassador’s red brick manor resembles the 17th-century château de Balleroy in France, which served as its inspiration. Enter the forecourt, however, and the interior reflects a marriage of several styles — not just of different eras but of different

regions as well.

Evident of the Parisian Ecole des Beaux Arts school, where de Sibour studied architecture and design, functional planning and classical structures precede style, a close second. The dark-paneled reception hall welcomes with a monochromatic wood scheme that evokes warmth and richness. A wooden stairwell with ornate scrollwork wraps around the floor above.

In direct contrast with the deep, ornamental tones of the entrance hall, the lighter drawing room is panelled with windows and eggshell-colored walls. It is clear that the original owner was a man of eclectic taste.

A dignified staidness carries over into the dining hall, which features Elizabethan wainscoting and furnishings.

The influences of the Italian Renaissance are present in the room with elaborately carved garnishes, and as a testament to its Mediterranean traces, the hall features a sideboard from an Italian monastery. Symmetrical elements reflected throughout the house are mirrored in the dining hall.

The earnest grandeur of the rooms carries an added dimension when one realizes its practical elements.

Juxtaposing Elizabethan-era adornments of the interior, the residence reflects an open plan of a later era in which one room flows into another and a single room can serve multiple functions. In the sitting room, a moveable wall controls the sunlight emitted into the two-story ballroom situated just on the other side. A skylight caps the dome in the center of the ballroom, which features a carved wooden ceiling with embellished plasterwork.

The hall, also aptly referred to as the “event room,� additionally serves as a dining room, gallery or concert hall, depending on the occasion and has been known to house salsa classes as well — a nod to the inseparable element of Colombian culture and dance.

was unique in today’s world because she was never interested or impressed by your job title. What mattered to her most were your trustworthiness, loyalty and your willingness to share your vulnerabilities and emotional experiences.

She had the ability to put herself in other people’s shoes. I experienced this first hand when we worked together side by side as relief workers with the Red Cross in refugee camps in Somalia, Ethiopia and the Sudan. After three weeks, I became depressed by the despair, death, flies and disease. But Kara had the ability to endure. She developed a bond with an orphan girl named Abeba, whom she bottleand spoon-

fed all day for weeks. I remember her saying, “We have to stay and do this.” We ended up staying for two and a half months and there’s no question in my mind that Kara’s commitment and compassion helped to save that child’s life.

Kara and Dad were always very protective of each other. One Thanksgiving, Kara, Patrick, Dad and I had to sail back to Hyannis from Martha’s Vineyard. It was cold and with no motor we had to hug the coast.

When we ran aground on a sandbar, Dad announced that someone had to get into the freezing water and push. I said don’t look at me because my prosthetic leg will rust. Patrick said not him because it could trigger his asthma.

My dad said he couldn’t because of his back.

Seeing where this was going, Kara said, “all right, I’ll do it but you all have to look away because I am going to take all my clothes off so that I have something dry to change into afterwards.” Well, that was way too much for Dad to deal with, so that’s when he got into the water. Like my father, Kara had a unique understanding of how to motivate people.

and I co-managed our father’s senate reelection campaign in 1988. Kara was in charge of media message. Like many political campaigns, the poll numbers suddenly tightened after Labor Day. Many consultants argued that the only way to impact public opinion was to “go negative.” I remember Kara disagreeing with nearly everyone. She implored Dad to emphasize instead his primary strengths — his compassion and willingness to fight for what he believed in. She reminded him why he was in political life. It was a gusty move and Dad was persuaded. He won that election with a larger margin than ever before and he credited it to Kara.

at least nominally, her best friend. I was always tickled when she introduced me to movie stars or heads of state as “My best friend Bolla,” as though we were little kids. But I also know that there are at least 50 other people who would say that Kara was their best friend, too, and probably a hundred or two on the waitlist. And they are equally right because Kara was the best friend anyone could have.

She paid attention to the smallest details of your life and she took action. She inherited her mother’s sense of wonder and generous hospitality, and her father’s legendary capacity for friendship. Like him, she reveled in her friends’ uniqueness, making them tell that joke, or do that imitation, or sing that song. again This love for friendship and family is what gave her life meaning.

Be honest anyway If you find happiness, people may be jealous.

For you see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.
