dual-degree programs Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science Students complete three or four years at WC and then two years at Columbia, earning a B.S. degree from WC and a B.S. degree in one of Columbia’s engineering disciplines.

Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment Qualified students of environmental science or studies can earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years.

University of Maryland School of Nursing Qualified students earn a B.S. degree at WC while fulfilling prerequisites for entrance into the nursing degree program at UMD, completing both in five years.

University of Maryland School of Pharmacy This program requires a minimum of seven years of study, with the first three years spent at WC. Students typically major in biology and complete prerequisites needed to apply to UMD. Once there, students work to earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree.

Loyola University Maryland Master of Accounting Fast Track

Qualified graduates receive a partial tuition scholarship for any master’s program offered through Biomedical Graduate Education.

WC students can apply for fast-track admission to Loyola after their junior year. Loyola will waive the application fee, GMAT/GRE requirement, essay, and one letter of recommendation. Accepted students who apply by the priority deadline will be guaranteed priority consideration for merit award scholarships.

Johns Hopkins University’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Entry into Nursing Program Students who have majored in a non-nursing discipline and decide to pursue nursing after they complete their undergraduate degree can complete a Master of Science in Nursing at Johns Hopkins in five semesters. They are then prepared to take the nursing licensing exam to become an RN, or to continue studies toward an advanced degree.

Loyola University Emerging Leaders MBA Fast Track WC students can apply for fast-track admission to Loyola after their junior year. video game heroes A new student club is producing an unlikely class of heroes who can bend time, defy physics, and unleash an array of extraordinary powers. And they are annihilating the competition.

During the fall of 2018, it was just a big idea. Now, more than 70 students are involved in one of the biggest organizations on campus— Washington College’s eSports Club, which unites international students, members of fraternity and sorority life, varsity athletes, and campus leaders. Within the eSports Club competitive component, there are four individual teams, each independently led by a student coordinator. Each team is responsible for a different game— Overwatch, League of Legends, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, and Counter Strike: Global Objective. Players meet weekly to practice and talk strategy.

In their first semester, the Overwatch team made history when six of Washington College’s best players shut out Averett University with a 4–0 victory.

The winning streak continued a week later as the League of Legends team, led by computer science major Carl J. Williams ’20, beat Averett University in its first match. Each week, the Hall of Fame Room in Cain Gymnasium is transformed into an uplifting space, full of laughter, encouragement, team-building, and, of course, winning. Synchronously, students like Williams are cultivating leadership skills and building strong and dynamic teams.

Reflecting the speed with which the club is growing, the SGA approved a request for funding for the club to join the Eastern College Athletic Conference, which sponsors intercollegiate esports leagues. And College officials have identified a possible permanent space in Goldstein Hall for the club to use.

“I have never been prouder of a group of students, as a whole, in my academic/ athletic professional career,” notes Steve Kaneshiki, the coordinator of campus recreation. “I have never seen so many students from different cliques come together and embrace each other with no questions asked except for one: ‘Do you like video games?’”

STUDENTS We believe that a liberal arts education gives you the strongest set of lifelong skills you’ll need to navigate, explore, and change the world, however you choose to “do you.” Our multidisciplinary approach is particularly valuable in helping you understand the connections that form the fabric of our society. You might find yourself at the intersection of art and biology, theater and political science, history and economics, or anthropology and music. 65% percent of students conduct an internship, and an additional 14% participate in a practicum or student-teach. Nearly onethird of all students participate in a short-term, semester, or yearlong study abroad program they’ve chosen from offerings in 30 countries.

She is currently gaining handson experience in compounding labs and working on her pharmacy technician certification as an employee at Edward’s Pharmacy, planning her Senior Capstone Experience on antibiotic resistance, and developing her leadership skills through Habitat for Humanity and Alpha Omicron Pi. “It’s nice to see students come together and work toward something that is bigger than all of us. I love how much the faculty and staff want to see us succeed, too. When Samina isn’t exploring the environment of the Eastern Shore, she can be found in Gibson Center for the Arts, shining in theatre and dance productions.

Since then, alongside an impressive roster of campus employment and internships, she has added Cleopatra’s Sisters and the position of treasurer for the English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta, to her extracurriculars. Most recently, Tamia interned for the Library of Congress Publishing Office as part of the Explore America Summer Internship Program.

What gives you the greatest satisfaction about teaching at WC? My greatest satisfaction is having the autonomy and flexibility to customize courses to meet my students’ individual needs. I combine my expertise in teaching writing, literature, and culture to help students become more aware and engaged in society.

What is your favorite class to teach, and why?

Naming a favorite class is like picking a favorite child. All of them are my favorite, albeit for different reasons. I recently taught an interdisciplinary course where students learned how to read African American literature to the tunes of different musical genres, including the blues, jazz, and rap. I enjoyed watching my students discover they could think and write critically about contemporary culture and still have a good time.

Describe your approach to teaching.

I approach teaching as an opportunity to do “consciousness-raising work.” Sometimes this is quite visible, like when students in my Black Men course gave their final presentations off campus at Sumner Hall, engaging in meaningful discussions about pervasive stereotypes in our culture.

Introduction to Fiction is more subtle, using only stories that deal with some form of social difference (e.g., racial, ethnic, gender, ability, sexuality, religious, etc.). The exchanges I have with students in class are designed to help them analyze literature and also be more aware of how they deal with difference themselves.

What gives you the greatest satisfaction about teaching at WC? Helping students develop a “strategic story” approach to their time in college—linking their studies and endeavors, in and outside the classroom, to a career area they care about, and helping this story come alive through the choices they make about majors, minors, internships, travel, service, and their LinkedIn profile.

What is your favorite class to teach, and why?

BUS 302 Organizational Behavior. It’s a course about people working together—what goes wrong and how to get it right. Partly politics, partly sociology, partly psychology, partly anthropology, partly imagination. We read everything from the story of how Moses learned to delegate, to Henry Ford’s assembly line, to why Google reorganized into Oxygen and how Wikipedia works.

Describe your approach to teaching.

I took 18 students to visit London, Brussels, Antwerp, and Amsterdam to better understand and experience the global dimension of business. We explored European businesses, the role of the EU in shaping the legal and regulatory framework, and the impact of Brexit on business in Europe.

We also saw theater and had a parkour lesson in London, ate chocolate and visited an EU session in Brussels, and went on a canal cruise and a country bike ride in the Netherlands.

What gives you the greatest satisfaction about teaching at WC? I absolutely love engaging students in the process of hands-on research through experiential lab activities and in my research lab. It’s so much fun to hear from students after they graduate and to learn how the experiences they gained at WC have helped them in their jobs or graduate school career paths.

What is your favorite class to teach, and why?

This is a really hard question because I get excited about each of my classes! I love teaching General Zoology because I get to talk about the evolution of so many strange and exciting animals. Wetlands Ecology is wonderful to teach; each week we visit a different wetland type and learn field and lab skills that are fun and valuable for the job market. I’m also partial to Wetlands Ecology because we visit wetlands during amphibian breeding season, study frogs and salamanders in the context of their ecological significance in wetland ecosystems.

Describe your approach to teaching.

Along with Jennie Carr, a fellow Associate Professor of Biology, I’ve taken students to Nicaragua and Brazil to study tropical ecology in rainforest habitats. During the academic year, my students travel to our River and Field Campus (RAFC) or to various field locations throughout Maryland to immerse students in local ecosystems. It’s one thing to read about science in a textbook, but it’s a game changer when you are given the opportunity to experience and apply scientific concepts in the lab and field firsthand.

alumni We’ve been awarding college diplomas to promising young upstarts for 238 years. They’ve been makers, doers, and innovators in everything from astrophysics to zoology. One alumnus, a 19th-century pharmacist, developed the skin cream “Dr. Bunting’s Sunburn Remedy,” now known as Noxzema.

Another, a commanding officer during the airborne landings in Normandy, led his battalion in defending the town of Sainte-Mére-Église despite having broken his ankle on landing. John Wayne portrayed him in the WWII film The Longest Day. One alumnus led the research team at Bell Labs, making advances in both communications science and computing and aerospace technologies…and leading the way for another alumnus to participate in the Apollo Space Missions.

One alum is a staff scientist investigating DNA-binding proteins in human breast carcinomas at Berkeley National Laboratory. Another oversees the biological programs at Mystic Aquarium, a division of Sea Research Foundation and one of the nation’s leading aquariums.

Grant Twilley ’14 is mapping coastlines from planes using LIDAR. The former GIS analyst is an aerial sensor operator for Woolpert, a national architecture, engineering, and geospatial firm.

Stephen Spotswood ’99 Playwright Stephen Spotswood ’99 is the 2017 recipient of the Charles MacArthur Award, one of the annual Helen Hayes awards for Outstanding New Play. His debut novel, Fortune Favors the Dead, is set to release this fall.

chestertown Established in 1706 as a colonial port of entry on the Chester River, Chestertown offers plenty of history and plenty to do. Grab a coffee at Play It Again Sam’s, head downtown for First Friday, or visit the Farmers’ Market in Fountain Park on Saturday mornings.

With locations such as the Center for Environment & Society (CES), the Starr Center, the Eastern Shore Food Lab, and the waterfront campus right downtown, students get to know Chestertown just by walking to class. Yearly events like the Chestertown Tea Party, Downrigging Weekend, and the Chestertown HP Festival bring the College and Chestertown communities together for a whole lot of fun.

Nature lovers are never bored on the Eastern Shore. Walk or bike nearby trails, check out a kayak from the Hodson Boathouse to explore the Chester River, or get involved with CES for a chance to explore the 4,700-acre River and Field Campus.

The “Do This” List There are a million ways to have fun at Washington College, but a few stand out as “must dos” for our students. Here is a sneak peek at the activities on our campus and in the surrounding community that you won’t want to miss!

Drive to Eastern Neck Wildlife Refuge in Rock Hall and hike the birdwatching trail.

Go to 98 Cannon, sit on the back deck, and watch the tall ships come in for Downrigging Weekend.

Volunteer to dress as WC mascot Gus the Goose or George Washington, and see how it feels to be the person (or bird) behind the costume!

Venture to the Book Plate in town to search for a first-edition copy of your favorite classic novel.

Get a group of friends together and float a boat in the Cardboard Boat Race.

Dress as your favorite character (or muggle) and head downtown to play a game of Quidditch at the annual Chestertown HP Festival in October.

There’s butterbeer!

Explore the shores of the beautiful Chester River up close and personal with a kayak or paddleboard from the Hodson Boathouse.

Come back to Chestertown in late May to witness the pageantry of the Chestertown Tea Party Festival. Don’t miss the reenactment, complete with redcoats, muskets, and cannon fire. Huzzah!

Take in a play or musical performance at The Garfield Center for the Arts at Prince Theatre, originally opened in 1909.

Visit the Farmers’ Market in Fountain Park on a Saturday morning. Throw a penny into the second tier of the fountain. (That’s where Washington College wishes come true.)

Hands-on Learning During the 2018-2019 academic year, the College distributed close to $350,000 to assist students with expenses associated with experiential learning. WC is one of just 16 institutions invited to send student interns to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Internship Program, and one of 12 invited to apply for internships, scholarships, and security clearance with the National Security Scholars Program affiliated with the National Security Agency (NSA).

I worked in every department, from book production to fundraising, marketing, editing, publicity, reader engagement, and whatever else came my way.”

JADA ARISTILDE ’21 MAJOR: Sociology; triple minor in Hispanic Studies, Justice Law and Society, and Public Health INTERNSHIP: National Museum of African American History & Culture “This internship was an opportunity provided and funded through the Starr Center’s Explore America Summer Internship program. I digitized, preserved, interpreted, and made accessible African American history in Kent County.”

Sean garin ‘20 MAJORS: Biology and Chemistry INTERNSHIP: Naval Research Lab “This was my second summer doing biochemical research in the Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering Division. I found this opportunity through a professor at Washington College and have been able to use the skills I learned though my courses for practical research.”

KAYLA ZAPCIC ‘21 MAJOR: Human Development; Psychology minor INTERNSHIP: Sudlersville Elementary School “When it came time to find my placement for elementary school field experience, my professors were very diligent, making sure I had everything I needed. I love bringing the values and concepts we learn at Washington College to real life in the classroom.”

Cater Society of Junior Fellows The Cater Society offers high-achieving students unparalleled opportunities to pursue independent research projects all over the world. By developing a project and then writing a grant to earn financial support for the travel and research, Cater Society Fellows are able to pursue their passions, travel domestically and internationally, and explore other cultures, no matter how distant.

TEGAN McBRIDE ’22 As a Cater Fellow, Tegan spent four weeks in Durango, Colorado, researching the effects of climate change on tourism. While in Durango, she created memorable experiences rafting the San Juan and Animas Rivers, trekking through the ruins in Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon, exploring Arches National Park, hiking part of the Colorado Trail, and riding through an Aspen forest on horseback!

Starr Center for the study of The American experience The Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience seeks to bridge the divide between the academic world and the public at large through educational programs, scholarships, public outreach, and a special focus on written history. It also offers programs such as StoryQuest, an oral history project available to students from all majors.

Rose O’Neill Literary House The Rose O’Neill Literary House offers programming across disciplines, professional mentorship and guidance for students, and training in new and antique printing technologies. The Lit House helps students grow as artists and supports them in envisioning their futures as writers, editors, and publishers. It offers internships in literary editing, journalism, and publishing, and it hosts a year-round salon of writers of international caliber, including Neil Gaiman, Toni Morrison, and Claudia Rankine.

Center for Environment & Society The Center for Environment & Society offers internships and fellowships in areas related to environmental protection and preservation. The Center works out of our Living Building Certified Semans-Griswold Hall which is a regional hub for hands-on research along the Chester River. CES oversees the 4,700acre River and Field Campus and is home to the Chester River Watershed Observatory, and the Foreman’s Branch Bird Observatory.
