Shakespeare's comedies provided great material for a compilation of scenes that loosely came together as CrossDressers, Drunks, and Fools, staged by the Department of Theatre and Dance in early October. Drama professor Dale Daigle says he “cherry-picked all the scenes that I loved” from plays including The Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Romeo and Juliet. colleague recently suggested that I’ve been at Washington College perhaps longer than any other woman on campus today—faculty or staff. Gee, thanks for reminding me. My art director was four when the first Washington College Magazine hit alumni mailboxes. But what I’ve learned over the course of the past 30 or so years is that women get the job done. And we approach every task, every opportunity, every transition with heart and courage.

I’ve had the privilege of working with some strong and wondrous women—too numerous to mention here. But you know who you are.

We’ve juggled the responsibilities of work while raising children and caring for aging parents.

We’ve buoyed each other in times marcia c. of crisis. We’ve managed to run landskroener faster, lift more, and fly higher m’02 with each passing year, carrying Washington College aloft on our shoulders. We achieve the impossible every day. We are resilient. We are strong.

The Glass Ceiling in Finance: Barely Cracked by sheila c. bair

W

omen working in finance are often overlooked for promotions to management levels and appointments as board directors. A number of studies, and my own decades of experience, suggest that women have a lot to offer the finance industry—differences in perspectives and life experiences that would enrich any firm where they are allowed to rise to the top.

Women can be just as analytical and strategic as men, but we are typically more risk-averse. Instead of looking strictly at the bottom line, we also tend to view things on a human level. We’re more attuned to social and cultural dynamics as economic factors, and are more sensitive to the impact of banking practices on individuals and families—probably something to do with our maternal instincts. Overall, women tend to be more careful and compassionate— important traits in building sustainable services and customer relationships.

Yet hiring women is still viewed as a matter of social obligation rather than

smart business practice, notwithstanding a growing body of research showing that diversity is good for profitability. For instance, a recent report by Morgan Stanley concluded that financial companies with more women in their ranks had superior shareholder returns and lower stock volatility.

In the past, a common excuse for the lack of women being promoted to senior positions was that there simply weren’t enough women in finance to promote. When I first entered the industry in the late 1980s working for the New York Stock Exchange, firms could perhaps legitimately argue that case. But that is certainly not true today. Indeed, 59% of all finance graduates are women, and women now make up 40% of students at top MBA programs. At Washington College, 66% of our finance students are women, including 31% in our Brown Advisory Student-Managed Investment Fund. For financial institutions that are serious about adding more women to their teams, there should be no problem in finding qualified candidates.

Women can and should help each other as well. Washington College has graduated a number of women pioneers in finance who are now helping younger students enter the field. For instance, there is Rebecca Corbin Loree, a 2000 graduate who became the youngest vice president of Thomson Reuters and currently manages her own investor relations advisory firm. She mentors and sponsors an internship for our students, including Audrey Utchen, a star analyst for the student-managed fund. Given the fact that only 10% of all U.S. fund managers are women, running only about 2% of industry assets, asset management firms should be scrambling to hire talented young women like Audrey.

Yet even when women are hired, progress in promoting them has been glacial. A 2016 report by Oliver Wyman found that women globally comprised only 20% of financial firms’ board members, and only 16% of executive committee members, up from 18% and 14% respectively in 2013. At that rate of growth, women on executive committees wouldn’t reach 30% for another 30 years.

It’s time that financial institutions in America recognize the value that women can bring to the executive suite and boardroom.

So to the CEOs who may be reading this column, I can only say: Look around you, guys (and you are almost exclusively guys). Yours would be a better firm if there were more female faces around your conference table. With greater gender balance, drawing from the best that both men and women have to offer, the finance industry will become a safer, more stable, and compassionate industry.

That’s good for the country and good for the long-term health and profitability of your business.

Reinterpreting Medieval Lit An exploratory exhibition suggests Chaucer’s keen perception of bird biology.

T

he SANDBOX space echoed with birdsong and Middle English during the opening of its newest exhibit, Parliament of Fowls. A cross-disciplinary collaboration between Jennie Carr, assistant professor of biology, and Courtney Rydel, assistant professor of English, the exhibit examined Chaucer’s poem Parliament of Fowls in regard to the biology of the birds embedded in the literature, commonly seen by scholars as symbolic of human characters.

Together, Rydel and Carr examined the poem through the lens of bird biology and came up with a different conclusion. “Scholars typically focus on everything except the birds; they think the birds are just allegories for human beings, and they talk about how the birds are not at all birdlike—which it turns out is inaccurate, in my opinion,” says Rydel.

After closely examining the birds in the poem, Carr and Rydel began to see that in many cases, bird behavior was just that—bird behavior. “For example, Chaucer says that sparrows are lecherous and they’re always cheating on one another, and a lot of sparrows do that! They find extra mates; the females seek out other mates to increase genetic diversity. So they are kind of lecherous, in that way,” says Carr. “A lot of scholars interpret Parliament of Fowls as groundbreaking in the sense that it’s giving power to women, when it could just be that Chaucer was looking at bird behavior

and writing about it. It’s totally a legitimate possibility.”

The SANDBOX exhibit, which ran through the end of October, was divided into two sections, starkly contrasting the literature and the biology.

With the help of a couple of Rydel’s Chaucer students, the literary side showcased the major players in the poem, along with medieval artwork depicting the poem. Viewers could use QR codes to look up the Middle English versions of different poem verses as well as translations.

The biology side of the exhibit, built by Carr and students from her class on evolution, used a fabricated tree to represent the current evolutionary tree of birds. Built of cardboard and bark, the tree extends from floor to ceiling in the SANDBOX space on Cross Street, along with feathers and audio of the calls of the birds mentioned in the poem, as well as photos. “It was just great to see how much the students loved the exhibit,” says Carr. “It was a lot of fun.”

Making Maryland Roads Safer The federal government has awarded Washington College’s Geographic Information System program a grant of more than $350,000 to support law enforcement.

hen the Maryland Highway Safety Office needs to better understand why Maryland roads are more treacherous than ever, it turns to Washington College’s Geographic Information System program. Here, in a nondescript business park a few blocks from campus, seven GIS staff members and fifteen student workers will spend the next twelve months analyzing and interpreting traffic safety data that can inform new lifesaving initiatives.

The grant of $354,441 is part of a $12.5 million federal grant awarded this fall to police departments and road safety advocates throughout Maryland to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries caused by inattentive, aggressive, or impaired drivers. It also sustains a working relationship the GIS program has had with Maryland’s law enforcement agencies over the past five years.

According to GIS operations manager Erica McMaster, the team draws data from the Maryland State Police (MSP) and the State Highway Administration that they then use to map high-density 8

areas for risky driving behaviors. In addition to supporting the State Police Impaired Driving Effort (SPIDRE), they have also devised a way to share information with other state agencies.

“We’ve developed a new web application known as RAVEN (Risk Analysis of Vehicles and Environment Network) that shares data about impaired driving. It’s a risk terrain model that combines a series of datasets: Where in the state is the highest risk for impaired driving? Where are people getting pulled over? Some law enforcement agencies don’t have the access or the capability of using GIS software for risk terrain, so that’s where we come in. It’s really about improving accessibility to complete and accurate highway safety data.”

It’s also about career readiness for Washington College students. “These students are acquiring on-the-job training, cleared to work with sensitive data. They could easily go on to federal jobs as data analysts,” notes GIS project manager Luis Machado ’13. “They already have some enviable data analysis skills.”

It Pays to Save Washington College’s latest initiative toward making college more affordable will reward families who have saved money for their children’s education. Called the Saver’s Scholarship, the pilot program will match the amount that families contribute from a 529 college savings plan or an Educational Savings Account, up to $2,500 per year, to pay for their student’s tuition.

“While we understand the need for some students and families to borrow responsibly to pay for college, Washington College also wants to support those who have set aside money for higher education,” says President Sheila Bair.

“This new scholarship is designed to reward that foresight and to encourage more such savings.”

The Saver’s Scholarship joins two other major affordability initiatives that President Bair has launched in the last year, in addition to freezing tuition: Dam the Debt, which helps graduating seniors by reducing their federally subsidized loan debt; and George’s Brigade, which provides full tuition, fees, room, and board for high-achieving, high-need, first-generation students.

“We recognize that not all families have the resources to save, so we are working to make more scholarship aid available to low-income families,” President Bair says. “For those who can set money aside, we want to encourage that savings ethic, since it helps students avoid unsustainable borrowing and the burden of student loan debt after graduation.”

Qualification for the Saver’s Scholarship begins in academic year 2016-17, and the first scholarships will be credited to the students’ financial aid awards in 2017-18. To receive the Saver’s Scholarship, a student must maintain continuous full-time enrollment, and must use funds to help pay for tuition from a 529 or ESA plan that has been established at least three years before enrollment. The College will match the previous year’s contribution, up to $2,500. Students who qualify for the Saver’s Scholarship can still pursue other types of scholarship aid, both from Washington College and elsewhere.

Leading the Way: Women Helping Women When it comes to establishing goals and building careers, mentoring can make all the difference. Now, alumnae are invited to share their professional success stories so students can discover new ways forward.

H

ow do you design a career that entails protecting African civilians from violent warlords, leverage an English degree into a successful business venture, or find an outlet for compassionate leanings in law school?

Washington College alumnae will tell students how they did it as panelists at LEAD: A Women’s Leadership Symposium on Nov. 4 at the Gibson Center for the Arts.

LEAD is co-sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations & Annual Giving and the Center for Career Development, with Christine Wade, associate professor of political science and international studies, serving as emcee. While the event welcomes all students, organizer and alumni volunteer coordinator Jenny Hutton says women still face unique hurdles in their professions, “between [encountering] income gaps, balancing families, and other challenges. Being diverse means helping women to find their path.”

Nine alumnae working in business, government, and advanced-degree careers will share how they navigated the twists and turns of their professional lives to arrive where they are today, working as attorneys, authors, and educators, to name a few. Moderators include College trustee Ann Horner ’80, former director of Borne Leisure and former managing director at DuPont; Suzanne Fischer-Huettner ’95, publisher of The Daily Record; and Hilary Badger ’14, special assistant to the executive vice president for policy at The Center for American Progress. The event will culminate in a special President’s Forum, a public segment with President Sheila Bair telling her own story and taking questions from students in the audience.

“Students will get career information, networking opportunities, and LinkedIn connections,” Hutton says. “Maybe they need help with grad school decisions or mentorship. We’re

putting experts in front of them, to inspire and to help.”

LEAD supports the College’s strategic goals for meaningful job placement after graduation, internships, and job shadowing experiences.

Having notable graduates visit campus and meet with students also reflects the school’s commitment to cultivating and activating invaluable alumni networks.

“Study after study shows that the inclusion of women in leadership positions improves a range of outcomes in both the public and private sectors,” Wade says. “But we know that girls and young women are less likely to think of themselves as leaders or be encouraged to enter leadership positions, and have fewer mentors who are women.

Programs like LEAD are designed to help young women overcome these barriers.”

With its wealth of resources and role models, Hutton hopes LEAD will become an annual event.

“Seeing someone who’s ‘made it,’ and being able to follow their example, is amazing.”

The Structure of Symmetry Who knew math could be so beautiful? Certainly, Susan Goldstine, professor of mathematics at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, knows. For a campus speaking engagement in October, she came outfitted with an armful of bead crochet bracelets, eager to share her knowledge of geometry, number theory, topology, and abstract algebra, and how it all relates to the beautiful beadwork and patterns involved in crocheting beaded bracelets.

The mathematics behind these pieces of wearable art is almost as stunning as the bracelets themselves. Creating the unique patterns for the bracelets involves knowledge of how geometry and modular arithmetic intersect in bead crochet, the structure of symmetry, and the aesthetic principles of jewelry design.

Goldstine’s recent book written with colleague Ellie Baker, Crafting Conundrums: Puzzles and Patterns for the Bead Crochet Artist, tackles not only the artistic finesse but also the mathematical approach to creating the incredible designs that set these bracelets apart.

From the Archives Seven decades after a young woman earned her Washington College diploma, another alumnus makes a coincidental discovery that proves the interconnectedness of our community.

ick Brocato ’84, a history teacher and varsity lacrosse coach at St. Paul’s School in Baltimore, has been living in his house in Towson for 17 years. Recently, he and his wife, Tracy started a home renovation project, and uncovered a little piece of Washington College history in the process. In a little-used basement crawlspace, Brocato came across the diploma of a fellow alumnus, 1943 graduate Elizabeth James.

“We got it out in the light, and I looked at it and I realized, oh my gosh, that’s a Washington College diploma,” he recalls. “It really is an incredible coincidence.”

Brocato had no idea about this alumna’s connection to the house. He and Tracy bought the house from a young

couple moving to Dallas. “Mrs. James had to be one of the original owners of our house,” Brocato says. “The house was built in either 1955 or ’57.”

When Brocato got in touch with Washington College about his discovery, he learned that the diploma’s recipient, now 95, lives close by in a retirement community.

Staffers reached out to James, who was surprised to hear the story. She had no recollection of how the diploma had ended up in the crawlspace of the home she had lived in for more than 20 years.

She agreed to donate her diploma to the College Archives.

“It’s nice to know it’s back at Washington College,” James says. “It’s a good ending to an almost impossible story.”

Pointed Gender Politics Sparks fly at a talk about women’s role at the polls.

New Directions for Kohl Gallery When Katherine Markoski was hired last May as director of Kohl Gallery, she recognized its intrinsic value as a teaching venue as well as an exhibition space. In addition to using art exhibitions to engage members of the College community with topics of social relevance, she also wants to make the gallery a more integral part of campus life.

“Kohl Gallery provides a wonderful opportunity to show works of art that the College community might not otherwise be able to see,” Markoski says. “With our exhibitions, we hope not only to introduce entirely new ideas but also to provide fresh perspectives on ideas or issues that are already on the minds of our audience— to come at them from a different vantage point. I want to demonstrate the ability of art to engage productively with pressing topics across disciplines. And for that reason, I’d like to get more classes into the gallery.”

A

n especially contentious presidential election battle set the stage for a colorful exchange on Oct. 19 in Hodson Hall tackling the topic of Women and the Vote. Melissa Deckman, department chair and professor of political science, steered a lively conversation with award-winning journalist Rebecca Traister about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump, and the role of gender in the 2016 election. The public event was part of a series of talks titled “Who’s Choosing the President?” with experts weighing in on this election year’s pressing issues.

When Deckman cited a survey indicating 83 percent of Republican women intending to vote will choose Trump, Traister added context. “There have always been women who continue to support policy that disenfranchises them. I do think it’s possible that some women are telling their husbands they’ll vote for Trump but won’t.”

Asked how sexism became a primary campaign issue, Traister said, “I’m not at all surprised we’re seeing misogyny.

I am surprised at how crass it’s been, how open and cartoonish it is. I think we’re looking at four to eight years of sexist and racist backlash based on what Clinton and Obama represent.”

Lending balance, Traister also said Clinton is far from an ideal candidate.

“She’s not an inspiring or uplifting speaker. She’s naturally a workhorse, which is what [Americans] like. But then we put her up on a podium and say, ‘lift us up, inspire us!’ And she’s not good at that.”

Both Deckman and Traister agreed that the historic significance of this election is being lost in sometimes shocking rhetoric. “This election is going to be viewed as an outlier, because one is a woman and the other is a dumpster fire.” Traister said. “We’ve been missing that there have been nearly 240 years without a woman president.”

“For millennial women, gender issues aren’t as apparent,” Deckman said.

“They see women leaders all the time.

But for the older generation, it’s much more important. Some of them had tears in their eyes when they learned of [Clinton’s] nomination.”

Other discussions in the series addressed The Changing American Voter, 2016; The Republic of Spin; and Politics as Performance. The series was co-sponsored by the Louis L. Goldstein Program in Public Affairs and the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience.

The first show of the semester featured the work of Nara Park, a young artist from Washington, D.C. whose sculptures evoke ruins or sacred spaces. “In conjunction with this exhibition, we hosted a roundtable discussion with James Hall of the English department and Julie Markin of the anthropology department that addressed the notion of ruins. The aim was to tease out the ways in which what we have on display might be relevant to faculty and students in other departments.”

In addition to directing the work of four paid interns who are responsible for the upkeep of the gallery, Markoski hopes to engage one or two students next semester for an academic internship at the gallery. Interns will help plan and execute exhibitions, she says, while also gaining an understanding of museum practices and the scholarship that underwrites the display of art objects and the organization of exhibitions.

Markoski, who specializes in 20th-century art, holds a PhD in art history from Johns Hopkins University.

A Better Way to Pay

“Too little attention has been given this election season to the skewed economic incentives built into the current federal-loan programs. Some want to layer more expensive and complex aid options onto the system and make public colleges free for a large swath of the population.

“But young people would still end up paying for these programs, as future taxpayers, if not as student borrowers. And they would undermine a core strength of our higher education system—choice—by giving a heavy advantage to public schools over independent, private institutions. New government programs would also require more government regulation, making college even more expensive than it is today.

Nicaraguan Narrative Christine Wade’s newest book, a sixth edition of Nicaragua: Emerging from the Shadow of the Eagle, is ready for college classrooms and beyond, just in time for November’s presidential election.

s the U.S. prepares for the upcoming election, the citizens of Nicaragua are readying for their own trip to the polls, with incumbent Daniel Ortega the assumed victor. This will be his third consecutive term as president, and his fourth as president of Nicaragua.

In 2014, Nicaragua’s legislature passed more than 90 Constitutional reforms including one abolishing term limits, one of many new topics addressed in Nicaragua: Emerging from the Shadow of the Eagle.

This edition, co-authored by Thomas W. Walker, also addresses myriad social and political changes the country has undergone since the book’s last edition in 2011, such as the Ortega administration’s record on gender equality, and the controversial interoceanic canal project. The changes to the book, though, are not all socio-political, as the text needed some major revision for ease of reading and use as a teaching tool.

“As the editions passed, it made more sense to restructure the book from a thematic narrative into a chronological one about Nicaragua’s development, which meant blending lots of bits from different chapters together. My editor called it ‘Frankensteining’ the text,” Wade says. “So the first challenge wasn’t actually figuring out what would go in the new edition; the first challenge was figuring out how to restructure the book so it would be not only easier for students to read, but easier for instructors to use.”

Another obstacle Wade faced was how to give Nicaragua a more inclusive feel throughout, and not just as an occasional sidebar. “One of the challenges of the book was to go back and make it more inclusive and representative of all of Nicaraguan society. That meant paying additional attention to indigenous issues, which often get overlooked in Nicaragua, and to women as well,” Wade says. “The goal was to integrate women into

the various stages of Nicaraguan history rather than just saying ‘this is how many women were in parliament.’”

Wade’s research on the book began in 2014.

She spent a lot of time in Nicaragua speaking with government officials as well as listening to the stories of the Nicaraguan people and how their reality reflected the current political dynamic there. “To me, it’s always amazing that people will welcome you into their homes or communities and talk about their projects and decision-making, and the changes that they’ve seen,” Wade says. “It is an honor to hear about people’s concerns—what isn’t going well, what they’re worried about, their various hopes and so forth and so on. And the challenge is to not allow anecdotes to tell the story for you, because I’m a political scientist, but to think about what those anecdotes tell us about the broader narrative that we see.”

Environmental economist Brian L. Scott told the audience gathered for Fall Convocation that the pivotal moments in his life and teaching were largely shaped by two principles: bravery and ignorance. Offering the keynote address as the 2016 recipient of the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the wry Scott shared several anecdotes that proved the point: deciding to run the Chicago Marathon without properly training, working in a small-town bank whose vault was encased in drywall, and giving up banking to earn a PhD so he could teach.

Bravery and ignorance, he says, compelled him to love. Love of his profession, his family, and this place where his students adore him.

Scott has held a joint appointment in the Department of Economics and the Department of Environmental Science and Studies since his arrival in 2007. He teaches introductory and advanced courses in microeconomics and environmental and natural resource economics. He is currently the Adrian Reed Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and Economics, and is co-chair of that department.

The Writing Life Richard Striner, professor of history, has released Love in the Afterlife, a follow-up to his 2011 Supernatural Romance in Film. Both examine the theme of romance that perseveres after death. “I noticed that a lot of these movies were produced during World War II, and culturally the reason was obvious,” he said. “What better way to cope with all the death?”

Striner wrote this latest book after realizing that there was more to be said on the broader literary patterns of the films. When his publisher would not agree to a revised second edition of Supernatural Romance in Film, he took it upon himself to write Love in the Afterlife. “This book came out much better,”he says. “I was able to stand back and see broader patterns in the development of this genre. I looked at patterns of this Hollywood tradition over time, and I’m much more pleased with this book.”

Striner has written books on a range of subjects. “I wanted to write because there were certain subjects that I was on fire about. It just started coming so easily,” he says. “Long, long ago I used to be a perfectionist, but those neurotic tendencies fell by the wayside. The more you do something, the easier it gets, and you achieve more and more momentum.”

mily Chamlee-Wright, whose passion for the empowering nature of the liberal arts education has defined her tenure as Washington College’s provost and dean, will become the new president and CEO of the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University.

Chamlee-Wright, who earned her BA, MA, and PhD in economics from George Mason, will return to Virginia in November to assume her new role at the non-profit institute, which is dedicated to advancing research and education in the classical liberal tradition. Founded in 1961, the institute is devoted to interdisciplinary inquiry on human affairs and the principles of a free society, with the belief that such inquiry will foster peace, prosperity, and social harmony.

“Among the things that I find most inviting about this opportunity is IHS’s core value of curiosity,” Chamlee-Wright says. “IHS is dedicated to the life of the mind, valuing learning and growth, no matter its source. Believing that humility and mutual respect are the keys

Chamlee-Wright assumed her role as Washington College’s dean and provost in 2012. Until her successor is hired, Associate Provost Patrice DiQuinzio will serve as interim provost, while Andrea Lange, assistant dean for academic initiatives, will step in as associate provost.

“Few people on campus are as valued and respected as Emily ChamleeWright, whose energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to this institution have been evident in every element of her work here,” says College President Sheila Bair. “While we will miss her, we congratulate her on this wonderful opportunity that will allow her to share her leadership, expertise, and passion for the emancipating power of education with the rest of the country.”

atching the muddy tide come and go on the Chester River, few people realize that setting foot on a well-found boat right from Washington College’s waterfront boathouse can lead you just about anywhere. And while they didn’t cross an ocean or circle the globe, the adventure that Theo Aris ’17 and Zee Ali ’17 undertook this past summer on a 27-foot sailboat they bought for $31 had everything to do with that belief in all that’s possible, if you’re just bold enough to take the first step.

The two—both members of the College’s men’s rowing team and accomplished students and mentors—sailed with Aris’ longtime sailing buddy Nathan Arndt from Chestertown to Southport, Connecticut, about 500 miles, to challenge themselves, to 16

witness things that a rare few are privileged to see, and to achieve a dream.

“The trip for me was life-changing, and I was humbled by the ocean and the power of everything around you,” says Ali, captain of the rowing team and a biology major with a minor in physiology and organismal biology.

“I have never seen a better canvas of the night sky.”

“When I was preparing for this trip, it really hit me that I was responsible for two other lives on the boat. The preparations were not only for myself, but also my crew,” says Aris, an economics major and mathematics minor who’s been sailing since he was nine years old and is a U.S. Sailing Level 2 certified instructor for small boats. (The trip’s ostensible purpose

was to deliver Aris to the Housatonic Boat Club in Stratford, Connecticut, where he’s been a summer instructor since 2013. Also, he had more resources there to continue making improvements to the boat.) Any trip on the ocean “is still risky, but we knew that we could take fewer risks with certain preparations. We were always aware of the things that could go south. We had the life raft on board, and checked weather reports and navigation readings at the top of every even hour.”

Aris says he had always dreamed of finding a little boat, fixing it up, and taking it sailing. Through Sailing Associates in Georgetown, on the Sassafras River, he and Ali bought a Cal 27 in January. They named her Navigant, after the Latin for “they sail,”

and spent several months with the help of Ben Armiger, the College’s waterfront director, prepping her for an ocean passage.

The trip north—up the Chesapeake, through the C&D Canal, down the Delaware Bay, through the Cape May Canal, up to Atlantic City, then offshore around the eastern tip of Long Island to Block Island, Rhode Island, and then Pequot Harbor in Southport—took ten days. Among other marvels, they saw a zillion stars, a mola mola (also known as an ocean sunfish), and a grey whale that surfaced nearby. They also got blown east by a squall off Atlantic City, and had a long, violent, stormy night in Long Island Sound that drove them into the protection of Port Jefferson, New York.

On the way back, Arndt and Aris traveled the inshore route, down Long Island Sound and through New York City, then back down the coast to Cape May and up through the Delaware and C&D Canal. Ali, who’s a resident assistant director, had to be on campus for training and missed the return voyage.

In addition to multiple American Sailing Association certifications, Aris is a performance sailing graduate of Colgate’s Offshore Sailing School, and is CPR/ AED certified. Ali brought his lifesaving and lifeguard certifications; during the summers, he’s a lifeguard at the Atlantic City Beach Patrol. Arndt is also a lifelong sailor.

Armiger credits the students’ attention to detail in preparation, and Aris’ and Arndt’s sailing backgrounds, with helping them succeed. But he notes that it takes something more to embark on this kind of singular adventure—and it’s that something more that makes such a journey a much larger life experience.

“There are two elements to being prepared for an offshore voyage,” Armiger says. “The first is knowing how to sail.

The second element, equally important, is something that is not taught, but it’s something all three young men possess, and that is having a strong character, the mental fortitude to do a journey of this scope, smart and safe, and to be responsible for all of your actions.

“These same characteristics are what’s required to be successful at top levels of leadership,” Armiger says. “I’m extremely proud of these students and what they’ve accomplished.”

For the next adventure, Aris and Ali are looking at charts for going south, sailing down the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida.

Teaching in Tanzania The term “life-changing” gets bandied about quite a bit at Washington College, but for Marie Wrenn ’17, a human development major who spent two weeks teaching English to young schoolchildren in Tanzania this summer, her experience was truly that powerful.

“

W

hen people say there’s little opportunity for young people in America, they have no idea of what it’s like in places like Arusha,” says Marie Wrenn’17v, an aspiring elementary school teacher. “These children have so little in the way of material possessions, and they want to learn, but most of them won’t go past their eighth year of schooling. Education isn’t considered necessary to the way they live. Some will go on to secondary school, but the rest will go home and help the family.”

Taking part in the College’s annual summer seminar in Tanzania, which also included a weeklong safari, Wrenn and a classmate, Melanie Klein ’17, prepared lesson plans in English covering parts of the body, time, insects, animals, fruits, verbs, colors, counting, and other subjects of interest to the 10- and 11-year-olds in the classroom.

The children responded so enthusiastically that they created additional lesson plans on the fly. Before the trip, they raised $700 for the school and filled duffle bags full of books and supplies to take along.

A human development major pursuing elementary education certification and a minor in studio art, Wrenn says the experience made her realize how much teaching means to her, and how important it is to use the resources available to her to the best of her ability.

“This trip meant the world to me,” she says. “It really touched my heart.”

School, says she used to take things for granted. Now she cringes at the carts of damaged goods being thrown away at the local big box store, mindful of how useful and appreciated those goods would be not only to the children of Arusha, but to the children in American school systems that struggle to provide adequate resources.

“I want my students to have the same right to education I have. I want my students to have the same wonderful experiences I have had. Now I know that I can have an impact.”

Student Intern Shines at the Smithsonian When a dream internship turns into a dream job, students usually point to their Washington College connections. It happened for Bethany Palkovitz ’16, an art history major who spent her summer as a curatorial research intern at the Smithsonian American Art Museum under the expert guidance of Eleanor Harvey, the senior curator there who happens to be a Washington College parent.

“The Smithsonian is fortunate; we get our pick of interns who are at colleges from all over the country and, in fact, from around the world,” says Harvey.

“I can say without exaggeration that the three Washington College students who have worked for me held their own and outperformed students from universities whose names may carry a little more weight. It is quite clear that the research and critical thinking skills that these kids are being taught at Washington College vault them to the top when it comes time for them to do more than just chase down my ideas, but actually bring their own ideas to the table.”

Impressed with Palkovitz’s research skills, Harvey offered her a year-long position as a curatorial research assistant to continue her work on the Alexander von Humboldt exhibit, which Palkovitz happily accepted.

Palkovitz was given the opportunity to work under Harvey through the Comegys Bight Summer Internship Program, which places up to ten students each year in fields related to American history and culture.

Goal-Oriented The women’s soccer team gets the job done in the classroom as well as on the field. For academic year 2015-16, the Shorewomen boasted the fifth-best team grade-point average in the nation, among all divisions, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

To qualify for the distinction, a team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player’s GPA, then dividing by the number of players. The Shorewomen easily cleared that bar, finishing the academic year with a team grade-point average of 3.75.

In addition to their fifth-place national showing, the Shorewomen were second in the NCAA Division III, just behind Washington and Lee (3.77), which tied with NCAA Division II Drury University for third place overall. Grace College was second at 3.79, and Embry-Riddle University led the nation with a gradepoint average of 3.85.

A Golden Opportunity Jen Tordella ’17 helped spread the Olympic spirit this summer when she interned as a hospitality guide for NBC Universal in Rio de Janeiro. by Catalina Righter ’17

T

hat communications workshop last fall at the Center for Career Development? It paid off handsomely for Jen Tordella. The double major in Hispanic studies and business management was selected to spend three weeks in Brazil, meeting celebrities and media CEOs, attending Olympic events, and watching the operations of a major media company unfold on an international stage.

The opportunity came about when Lisa Moody, interim director of the Center for Career Development, toured the NBC offices in New York City. She met an NBC executive who, impressed with the communications workshop program, invited Washington College students to apply for the Olympic hospitality guide position.

Last January on her way home from the gym, Tordella got the call. “I was so ecstatic,” she says. “That was probably one of the coolest moments ever.”

Tordella already had a family connection to the Olympics through her cousin Kevin Barnett, a member of the 2000 and 2004 Olympic indoor men’s

volleyball team. He was also in Rio this summer, working as a commentator.

Home base for hospitality guides was the Belmond Copacabana Palace, one of the top luxury hotels in South America.

Tordella’s job was to greet guests of NBC and offer activities so they could experience Rio. A typical day for her often included taking an open-air jeep full of media executives out to Corcavado (site of the famous Christ the Redeemer statue), then lunch in a treehouse restaurant, followed by an event at the Olympic swimming park. “The days were long,” Tordella says, “but it was all so much fun.”

She quickly gained confidence in a corporate environment, and was inspired to pursue job opportunities in the media field. “I think it definitely pushed me ten steps forward, to be more proactive about getting into those cool positions,” she says. “Going to the Olympics was incredible, but meeting the NBC Universal guests and hearing their stories was probably one of the most beneficial things about the experience for me.”

All the World’s a Campaign A season of travel with this year’s presidential candidates proved that democracy is still a live event.

T

he room is upstairs in a town hall that was built in 1924.

The room is a converted metal factory from 1891.

The room is a theatre that used to house a market, then the Masons, then the Shriners, and then the movies.

The room is an arena that hosts ice hockey and indoor football.

The room is in a former railroad station that was converted into a hotel in 1983.

The room is the lobby of a sports arena at a Division I university.

In a time when historic characters sing about being in “the room where it happens” onstage, the common perception is still that politicians are making policies in back rooms somewhere, far away from the nosy public eye. That may be the case, but the road to the Oval Office is very public, paved in arenas in towns and venues across the U.S. Campaigns choose towns for demographics,

or in the belief that an impressive crowd can be drawn, and venues are selected because decades of advance teams have shared contact information or because of one staff member’s familiarity with the area.

What is less clear are the other choices made on the campaign trail: Who picks the music? Why does one candidate use a chandelier while another uses house lighting? Is there meaning to be deciphered in the decision to place a bottle, glass, or pitcher of water on the podium/stool/dais?

What about those homemade signs? And finally, what does this level of theatricality say about our political process in 2016?

Despite the (often incorrect) overuse of words like “kabuki drama” and “political theatre” by pundits, the message conveyed to what Aristotle called “the polis” relies on the medium of theatre. If the selection of a candidate comes down to who makes the better argument to the American voters—the

script, if you will—there are also decisions to be made about everything that goes into presenting the script: lights, sets, costumes, sound, text, directing, and, perhaps most of all, acting.

It’s not “just” theatre, of course. As I followed six candidates on the campaign trail through the primaries last spring and summer—John Kasich, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, and Hillary Clinton—what I found most compelling was the tension between what was presented live on the stage at events and what was designed exclusively for audiences elsewhere: social media, radio and television, print, and other outlets. It became apparent that the latter was of primary concern to the campaigns, though those audiences/voters who were actually in the room (myself included) certainly found ways to connect with the candidates.

If the selection of a candidate comes down to who makes the better argument to the American voters—the script, if you will— there are also decisions to be made about everything that goes into presenting the script.

As anyone working in live theatre is aware, the audience is part of the performance. Staged events, from “town halls” to “public conversations” to “rallies” to large-scale arena events (there is no clear definition or delineation among them), rely on a candidate connecting emotionally and commanding the room. In a political season in which authenticity and straight talk have seemed to be unusually determinative forces, in-person audiences allow a narrative about “approachability” to emerge. Voters in 2016 no longer want to have a beer with the candidate; they want to take a selfie with them. Spending time live and in person with a candidate certainly appears to sway voters; Iowans and New Hampshirites have proven this since 1972 and 1920, respectively.

What follows are my reports from the trail on how candidates used that quality time with audiences—both the ones in the room and the ones on the other end of the cameras.

The gathering was clearly designed to be personal; what was seen by spectators in the room was nearly identical to photos in the press. The overall impression was of a candidate wanting to be seen as a transparent, common-sense option—and, like a lot of common-sense options, not all that dynamic. His message and his style where best summed up by his peculiar conclusion: “I need your help. Please vote for me. And if you didn’t like my presentation, don’t tell anyone.” At press time, Kasich had yet to endorse his party’s more flamboyant nominee, despite suspending his own campaign the first week of May.

It’s Only Rock and Roll, But I Like It Brown Band, John Fogerty, and Mumford and Sons). He chose a bright and open historic town hall, set up with seating for 235—a stark contrast to the larger spaces of other campaigns. Kasich’s event, according to a seasoned advance team member, was designed to appeal to the older, potentially swing-voter audience, who’d been polled for their thoughts on the theatrics of the rest of the field. Emphasizing jobs, family, and security, Kasich said, “A president has the moral duty to create jobs because they will secure kids and build better neighborhoods,” while evoking local heroes Tom Brady and Paul Revere, plus Republican patron saint Ronald Reagan. The audience, invited to ask questions, brought up Common Core, veterans’ issues, gay marriage, and religious liberty.

In contrast to Kasich’s staid audiences were the raucous and youthful supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose campaign I witnessed in Reading, Pennsylvania, on April 21. (Total manbuns observed: seven.) He was clearly on their wavelength. He led his audience in roaring “$27!” when asked how much his average campaign donation was. While other candidates appeared tailored down to their socks, Sanders didn’t attempt to tame his frizzy white hair or his slightly oversized blue suits. Sanders outsider status was also apparent in his music choices: songs about revolution and change by Tracy Chapman, Neil Young, and Bruce Springsteen (all appropriately licensed) played alongside, curiously, at least three songs by Diana Ross and the Supremes.

Down Home With Kasich Ohio Gov. John Kasich exploited his personal style as a way of separating himself from the rest of the field, particularly Trump. Kasich was the folksy candidate who refused to join in the usual mudslinging, a point he made at the start of his remarks on Feb. 29 in Plymouth, Massachusetts: “I would rather lose than degrade myself… kids are watching this.” His tie loose and his shirt unbuttoned, he shed his jacket when he started engaging with the audience, which he did after speaking for 15 minutes. It was clear why Sanders engaged so many first-time voters: His message was direct and targeted at them, whether he was offering solutions to crippling student debt or pairing the legalization of marijuana with an income-inequality message. He was equally responsive to the other side of his support base—people who recalled the “Food Not Bombs” movement that began in the 1980s.

Sanders 2016 version became “Jobs and education, not jails and incarceration.”

It was at the Sanders rally where the differences between what the audiences in the room saw and the public watching or reading the news, became apparent.

A member of the Sanders advance team described planning events with “the vibe and energy of a Bernie concert,” aiming to reach as many people as possible. Creating this was a delicate balance that involved deciding what the lighting in the room should be: adjusted for television—historically “hot”— or, as the candidate preferred, less bright so he could better see his audience? The Sanders campaign also wanted to make sure that all venues were signatories with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (both the Clinton and Sanders campaigns have contracts with the union).

In other words, the Sanders campaign, like others on the trail in 2016, worked to marry the message (pro-union) with the medium (a theatre with enough light to be able to point out the members of striking Verizon workers in the audience).

In addition, of the 58 individuals seated behind the candidate (in the shot for the cameras in the back row of the theatre), 14 percent were people of color—a much higher percentage than was evident in the 1,700seat theatre. The campaign acknowledged that the selection of background faces was intentional, as the message it wanted to

present to the audience outside the room was about immigration. Polling at the time suggested that it would be advantageous to court Latino voters; that’s why three of the four individuals who spoke prior to Sanders spoke in Spanish to the crowd. The campaign succeeded in conveying the message: Though only a small part of the live event, these pre-Sanders speakers were forefronted in broadcasts on national and local media outlets.

The Final Curtain When a campaign is clearly in its last throes, as was the case with U.S. Senators Marco Rubio of Florida and Ted Cruz of Texas in mid-March and late April, respectively, the room takes on a completely different atmosphere. All the blue suits, white shirts,

and red ties become nearly interchangeable.

Rubio’s farewell took place at Florida International University in Miami on the day of the state’s primary. The polls predicted a Trump victory, and as a result, the event, originally planned to take place inside the arena where the Panthers play, was moved to the lobby instead. Two American flags were draped on either side of the podium touting MarcoRubio.com, and a banner hung behind him with “New American Century, New American Jobs, New American Leadership” printed on it. The atmosphere among the crowd felt like a mini family reunion; there was a lot of hugging and welcoming, but with a somber air.

There were also a lot of reporters, who at times seemed to be roaming around the room looking for anyone who was a supporter and not a fellow member of the media. Two screens airing Fox News hung on the secondfloor balcony, with the audience looking up frequently and expectantly. At 7:25 p.m., chants for “Rubio!” began, but they died quickly. At 8 p.m., polls closed and Trump was declared the victor.

Rubio’s appearance was received warmly, but the candidate was subdued. After noting that he had called Trump to congratulate him (which the crowd booed), he observed: “There is nothing more that you could have done… America is in the middle of a real political storm, a real tsunami, and we should have seen this coming.” He commented on the political climate, adding, “The politics of resentment against other people will not just leave us a fractured party, they are going to leave us a fractured nation,” and sounded frustrated as he talked through the rise of the Tea Party, lamenting that while it “gave Republicans a majority in the House, nothing changed.” This refrain, FALL 2016

vocal audience. To the audience member who agreed, “It’s disgusting,” when Cruz said, “Grown men should not be allowed to go into the little girls’ room,” the candidate did not respond. Similarly, he did not turn to look at the voter who shouted, “Israel is our friend,” to his observation, “For seven years, we have seen a leader alienate our allies and appease our enemies.”

He also offered the most pointed punch lines, taking shots such as, “Let’s hear it for the Democrats: a wide-eyed socialist whose ideas are dangerous to America and the world. And also Bernie Sanders,” and, “Do you know the quickest way to clear out a Sanders rally? Tell everyone there they need to go and get a job.” Those in the room cheered, but Cruz’s campaign was effectively over.

“Nothing changed,” was clearly his message for the evening, though he concluded on a note of optimism: “We are a hopeful people.” He ended by quoting a passage from Corinthians. It was unclear to the dramaturg in the room what the intention of this was, but it appeared to salve a deeply wounded audience. The event was over by 8:35 p.m.

Cruz would ultimately suspend his campaign on May 3, but on April 22, he was in a small ballroom at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Unlike the Trump, Sanders, and Clinton campaigns, security for Cruz was light. There were no visible signs of the Secret Service, no airport-style screening machines, and only a handful of state police.

The line to enter was only 40 people deep, but they were adamant in their commitment to the candidate; they were not interested in 24

the eventual Republican nominee. The room itself was generic, with a thrust stage set up in the middle and seats for roughly 300. The press pool, which took up large areas at other events, was limited to six cameras and four tables on risers.

An official from a local foundation introduced Cruz, and the presenter responded to chants of “Cruz Cruz Cruz” with the statement: “He will stand up and fight for us no matter what the Washington cartel says.” Cruz himself responded, “We are here because our country is in crisis… and I am here today with a word of hope and encouragement. All across Pennsylvania and all across this country, people are waking up and help is on the way.” This was a candidate who didn’t waver from his message of jobs, freedom, and security, even at his campaign’s twilight—and in the face of a

There is anticipation that something will happen, and there is definitely the sense that an audience member is in experienced hands, as with Ibsen. Or Tracy Letts.

In Philadelphia in late April, Clinton was close to securing the nomination, and the crowd assembled was certainly enthusiastic about this fact. Though the event was scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (and the candidate herself didn’t come on until 7:46 p.m.), lines started forming at 3:30 p.m., and campaign workers took advantage of a captive audience, moving among the crowd to secure volunteers and approval for other

candidates, and to talk about issues ranging from Social Security to gender equality.

Hillary’s Spotify list is highlighted by songs from female artists about joy, happiness, and celebration, feelings that were enhanced by a live band called the Sermon.

As was the case with Sanders, the frame behind the candidate was heavily curated.

“Hand-lettered” signs were handed to audience members (“Clinton Country,” “I’m With Her,” and “Rise Together”) along with small American flags, and staffers were seen teaching proper clapping techniques. At 7:33 p.m., another staff member poured water into a glass and placed a cough drop next to it.

Clinton’s appearance, from her suit to her message, was refined and specific. Though she was losing her voice, she appeared relaxed in the wake of a successful debate appearance six days earlier and a wellreceived speech in New York City the day before. In Philadelphia, her message, “I have a plan,” and her assertion, “It’s not enough to diagnose the problem, you’ve got to know how to solve the problem,” were cheered each time she said them, proving that repetition can be as effective a campaign tool as a wellworded tweet.

Clinton, who has faced criticism for a purportedly inauthentic tone and style—even the way she smiles has been scrutinized—was rumored to have been coached by an actor to improve her breath control. Coaching or not, it’s apparent that she is a seasoned performer; she moves through the world as though it were her own proscenium stage.

the architecture and acoustics were designed to focus the audience’s attention on the actors, Trump routinely scheduled events that took place in arenas made for sports and crowds of more than 10,000 people. Such choices made for a yuge (sorry) challenge in connecting with the individual voter. While Trump certainly captivated many with his provocative rhetoric (“I am 100 percent committed to waterboarding,” “The border is letting in Syrians; we don’t know if they are ISIS,” and, “In the good old days, this didn’t used to happen, because they used to treat them very rough”), at times his audiences appeared to be more interested in their phones. None of the large video screens familiar to fans of hockey or basketball were used, leaving many unable to actually see his facial expressions and gestures. Bright fluorescent lighting provided little nuance, and his self-curated playlist—ranging from the Alan Parsons Project to Luciano Pavarotti—provided little context or point of view.

Of course, both campaigns climaxed with televised conventions that were stagemanaged within an inch of their lives for viewers at home, and while there was the usual range of speeches from brilliant to dull, also as usual the real drama emerged from the unexpected, like Ted Cruz’s pointed non-endorsement of Trump at the RNC or the passionate, often tearful protests of Sanders supporters at the DNC. After looking at several months of campaign events, I got a genuine sense that politics are being performed for the electorate rather than with us. There was never a dull moment. But perhaps there should be. Our republic, if we can keep it, is predicated on the notion that we be well informed. But are we? Do we want to actually

engage with policy, or are we content with a two-dimensional democracy?

Alexis de Tocqueville, observing both our theatre and our politics in 1840 while touring America, noted: “The democratic audience listens in the theatre but does not read plays. Most of the spectators are not looking for pleasures of the mind, but for lively emotions of the heart. They want to see a play, not discover a fine work of literature and, provided the author writes his native tongue well enough to be understood, and his characters excite curiosity and arouse sympathy, the audience is satisfied. They ask no more of fiction, and go back immediately to real life.”

If this dramaturg could implore readers, voters, citizens to do one thing based on what was experienced in 2016, it is this: Get in the rooms. All it takes is an RSVP of “yes.” You’ll inevitably grow tired of the song “Roar,” and perhaps not be able to unsee John Boehner dancing. But the real election is taking place live on stages around the country, not just on your screens.

Hillary Clinton’s Historic Nomination Matters

illary Rodham Clinton is not the first woman to run for President of the United States. That honor belongs to Victoria Woodhull, who ran for president as a suffragette on the Equal Rights ticket in 1872, well before women even attained universal voting rights in 1920. Nor is Clinton the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s nomination for president—an honor held by Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress from Brooklyn, who would go on to secure a handful of delegates at the 1972 Democratic National Convention. Sen. Margaret Chase Smith was the first Republican woman seeking her party’s nomination for president in 1964; like Chisholm’s, her bid was viewed as symbolic and quixotic, although she did secure a few delegates.

University of Notre Dame shows that girls are more likely to state an interest in politics and to envision themselves as politically active in the future when they see women run viable campaigns for high-profile political offices. The presence, then, of Hillary Clinton as her party’s nominee for president is likely to yield a strong “role model” effect.

Moreover, Clinton’s success in securing her party’s nomination may help inspire more women to run for political office by dispelling the notion that women are not successful when they throw their hats into the political ring. Women’s representation to elected office has frustratingly remained stagnant for the past two decades: roughly 20 percent of members of Congress are women, as are one in four state legislators. (In fact, these dismal statistics inspired Washington College’s Christine Wade, Goucher College’s Mileah Kromer, and me to develop Training Ms. President, a program geared at giving college women a leg up in planning future runs for political office. (See sidebar.) Simply put, women express less political ambition than men and are also less confident about their abilities to hold political office—often second-guessing their qualifications in ways that men do not.

The good news is that when women do run for political office today, they are just as likely as men to win; voters typically don’t penalize candidates based on their gender.

Unlike these efforts, however, Hillary Clinton’s run for the 2008 Democratic nomination represented the first serious attempt by a woman to secure a major party’s nomination. With almost universal name recognition and an impressive fundraising capacity, Clinton was assumed by many to be the likely nominee, but of course ran into a formidable challenger in Barack Obama.

Her near-success in the 2008 presidential primaries, her subsequent term as Obama’s first Secretary of State, and her long-term popularity within the Democratic Party all but assured Clinton front-runner status in 2016, making her nomination this year as the first woman for president by a major party seemingly uneventful. Yet, her nomination to stand as the Democrat’s nominee for president represents an important milestone in America.

For one thing, in breaking the ultimate glass ceiling in American politics, Hillary Clinton sends a powerful message to America’s next generation that women are just as capable as men of holding powerful political offices. This message may be particularly important to America’s girls.

Political scientists have long known that women express less interest in public affairs than men and are less likely than men to participate in all forms of politics except for voting. However, research by Christina Wolbrecht and David Campbell of the

Voters care far more about a candidate’s party label than her number of x chromosomes.

While not all gender stereotypes held by voters have gone the way of manual typewriters, recent research by political scientists such as Jennifer Lawless and Danny Hayes demonstrates that women candidates no longer face the sort of gendered bias they had to endure in decades past, especially from the news media. Nonetheless, Lawless and Hayes find that many Americans still perceive an unfair electoral environment for women. In this respect, then, Hillary Clinton’s historic achievement as her party’s presidential nominee—especially if she wins in November—may potentially alter Americans’ perceptions about gender bias in our elections and may ultimately inspire a new generation of women to consider running for office.

Clinton’s historic nomination as the first female major party presidential nominee also helps strengthen our democracy. Political theorists have long recognized the importance in a democracy of having multiple voices at the decision-making table. When that table is the purview of a privileged few—and make no mistake, our political leaders are still likely to be white men—important perspectives that can shape our political priorities and policies are missing. No one group in society holds all of the answers to our most pressing

problems, so excluding voices from the conversation, particularly those voices that have been historically underrepresented, calls into question the legitimacy of our decisionmaking process.

Regardless of whether Hillary Clinton wins the White House in November, her selection as her party’s standard-bearer sends a powerful message that women’s views and experiences matter at the highest level of office in America. This is not to suggest that women are politically monolithic in their attitudes about public policies. My own research, in fact, focuses on conservative women who will likely never vote for Hillary Clinton because their priorities and solutions to political problems are very different from hers. These women, in fact, were the first to celebrate Sarah Palin’s historic nomination as the Republican vicepresidential nominee in 2008. Americans of all political persuasions should celebrate the fact that the possibility of a woman president or vice-president from any party is no longer an abstract goal. Hillary Clinton’s acceptance of her party’s nomination for president reminds us that women are increasingly welcome to participate fully as leaders in all arenas of public life and in the private sector.

As Clinton said in her acceptance speech, “When any barrier falls in America, it clears the way for everyone. After all, when there are no ceilings, the sky’s the limit.”

ast fall, Washington College hosted the first annual Training Ms. President: College Women’s Candidate Training Program on its campus to address the underrepresentation of women in public office. Developed by political science professors Christine Wade and Melissa Deckman of Washington College, along with Professor Mileah Kromer of Goucher College, the summit brought together ten female students from both campuses to inspire them to think about running for political office and to learn the first steps necessary to achieve that goal. Washington College’s Goldstein Program in Public Affairs and the Sarah T. Hughes Politics Center at Goucher College generously underwrote the program.

Over the course of two days, students networked with more than a dozen women officeholders, political professionals, and journalists—all of whom generously donated their time and expertise. In numerous panels

and over several meals, women students learned about campaign messaging, effective communicating, candidate recruitment, and perspectives on running for office from a variety of women from both sides of the political aisle. Among our panelists was Hannah Marr ’12, who got her political start directing social media for Larry Hogan, at that time a candidate for Maryland governor. Marr’s success in this position led the governor to hire her as his deputy press secretary in his new administration in 2015.

Marr shared not only her expertise in using social media in political campaigns, but also her advice for launching a career in politics shortly after graduating from college. Other panelists, including Fox 45 news anchor Jennifer Gilbert, stressed the importance of communicating effectively as political candidates, while others emphasized the need for grit and tenacity as women candidates run in a male-dominated field.

Students left the program inspired about

their political possibilities and impressed with the panelists. Wrote Molly Igoe ’18, “The diversity of the panelists’ backgrounds was inspiring and eye-opening, because I see clearly now that passion and strong convictions can lead you to places you may not have planned to go, whether that be in public office or somewhere else. All the women who spoke agreed that young women need to run for office to bring a different dynamic to a field so heavily dominated by men.”

The second annual Training Ms. President event will be held this year at Goucher College in Baltimore, on November 17 and 19, and is open to any female student—regardless of major—who wants to learn more about running for political office.

with President Sheila Bair On the one-year anniversary of her inauguration, Sheila Bair reflected on her first year in office and shared her vision for Washington College. by Marcia C. Landskroener M’02

Previous presidents have called for Washington College to take its rightful place “among the best liberal arts colleges in the country.” You have a very specific target in mind. What will it take for Washington College to break into the top 50 liberal arts colleges?

This is a great college. It’s got great bones. We have a rich history and tradition. So I think we have the opportunity now to enhance our national reputation and to increase our rankings by building on our strengths and leveraging our location here on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. I hope over the next five years to elevate us into the top 50. I don’t want to suggest that we’re leading this college based on what ratings agencies say, but I do think that a lot of the things they look at are things that deserve our attention.

One is graduation rates. We do pretty well, but we need to do better, and I’d like to get our graduation rate to 83 percent, which will be more consistent with a top 50 school.

Secondly, I want to get our first-to-second year retention rate above 90 percent. When students leave Washington College, they typically complete their degrees at other schools. Every student who leaves our campus is a real loss. We want them to have a strong attachment to this place. A vast majority of our students do, but there are some students we lose, and I really want to correct that.

Another is alumni participation, and this is really two things. One is the number of alumni who give, and the second is how much they give. We have a very dedicated and loyal alumni body, but they don’t give as much as alumni at our peer institutions.

One of the ways they could demonstrate their affection for Washington College is to donate to The Washington Fund. Here again, we want alumni to give as generously as they can. Those funds are really important to supporting our operations. The more we can raise from alumni and others through annual giving, the less we have to rely on tuition increases, which can lead to more student borrowing. As it stands now, 90 percent of all students receive some form of need-based financial aid or merit-based scholarship award.

about us. I think our alumni have not fully appreciated the importance of participating in annual giving. This year, with a little encouragement, we were able to increase our alumni participation rate by four percentage points. I’d like to repeat that next year to get us to 25 percent. Ideally, we’d be in the top 30s. Schools in the top 50 achieve that level, and sometimes more.

But beyond the dollar amount, it’s important to give something. The alumni participation rate is very important. The raters look at it. Donors look at it. It says something about our college and how our alums feel

Beyond supporting their alma mater financially, how else can alumni become more engaged?

is through internships, and those alumni connections are key. Having an advocate in a company to alert us to job opportunities and to be an advocate for our students when they apply is very, very important.

Congratulations on a record year for fundraising, particularly in support of Dam the Debt and George’s Brigade. But I have a feeling you are just getting started.

How do you imagine these programs will evolve?

The student response to Dam the Debt has been very good, and we will continue to raise money for that program. It has gotten a lot of press attention, as well. I’ve seen other schools starting to pay down their graduating seniors’ debt through operating surplus. We’re trying to accomplish the same thing through philanthropy, and it’s resonated with donors. They understand we’ve got a national problem with heavy student debt. Every dollar raised goes directly to pay down debt for the benefit of the students. I hope we can continue our efforts here; it will be a fundraising priority for me personally this year.

The same with George’s Brigade. This is a scholarship program for very high achievers who also have very high financial need. It’s important for them to rely on scholarships, not debt, to finance their education, given that their family resources will not be anywhere close to meeting the cost of a liberal arts education. That’s also resonated with donors. This type of education should be broadly accessible. Particularly for first-generation college students, being part of a small environment like ours, where you have a lot of eyes on you, where you can work one-on-one with your faculty, is so important to their academic success, and donors have agreed. We are not alone here. There are a lot of schools that have launched first-generation programs. It really is a part of who we are as a nation. I

think George Washington would be smiling.

In endowing Washington College, he recognized the need for a quality education to be broadly accessible. That was his whole purpose in helping us—to make education accessible to the agricultural community.

Working families, and children of working families, need to be able to access this kind of education. That’s really what George’s Brigade is all about.

What else are you looking forward to in the year ahead?

We’re thrilled about a new communications major we’re preparing to launch next fall.

We’re also eager to explore additional strategic partnerships with other institutions, such as dual-degree programs and articulation agreements with graduate programs, so we can help create a smooth pathway for our students pursuing advanced degrees in the environment, public health, and other disciplines.

Center for Career Development to help our students with career mentoring, internships, and job placement. I’m committed to doing everything in my power to make sure our students are prepared both academically and financially for the world they enter after graduation.

And we’re preparing to publicly launch a campaign in May that will support scholarships as well as our academic programs, particularly for environmental research. A waterfront campus and a new home for the Center for Environment & Society will likely be the centerpiece of the campaign. Stay tuned for more on that!

Thinking long-term, where do you see Washington College in five years? If we are to become one of the nation’s top 50 private liberal arts colleges, how do we get there?

I believe Washington College will be widely recognized as a game-changer in terms of college access and affordability. We’ll be known as that small liberal arts school on Maryland’s Eastern Shore with a stunning waterfront campus supporting one of the strongest environmental programs in the country. And we will have a robust alumni network that works hand-in-hand with the

How do we move the needle? Stronger graduation rates, higher alumni participation rates, the size of our endowment, greater donor support, and the academic strength of our incoming classes are all factors that can help us break into the top 50. Programs like George’s Brigade that help students who are very strong academically, but who otherwise don’t have the financial wherewithal to afford a private liberal arts education, also have a positive impact on our rankings.

I think we’ve made tremendous progress already in several areas. First-to-second year retention is up three points to 86 percent. Alumni participation is on the rise. Our incoming class is one of the most academically strong and diverse in College history. And, with just under $23 million on the books, we had a record year in fundraising. These are challenging times for private liberal arts colleges, but Washington College’s upward trajectory is bucking the trend. I think we’re gaining momentum, and I’m very optimistic about the future of Washington College.

The Homecoming Queen of Green Chemistry In October, the University of Toledo’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics honored Professor Anne Marteel-Parrish as its outstanding alumna of the year.

W

e at Washington College know that Anne MarteelParrish— chemistry professor, deputy chair of the chemistry department, and the Creegan Chair in Green Chemistry— is a rock star. Turns out, her alma mater, where she earned her PhD, has realized it too.

“I have the distinct pleasure to congratulate you on your academic accomplishments and successes, and especially for all your important contributions to green chemistry research and education,” Karen Bjorkman, professor of astronomy and the founding dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the University of Toledo, wrote to Marteel-Parrish. “Your experiences, accomplishments, and research efforts are numerous and impressive.”

Marteel-Parrish was invited back to the Ohio campus for the university’s homecoming celebration, where she was recognized with other alumni award winners at a gala dinner and reception, followed by a ride the next morning in the homecoming parade.

Marteel-Parrish grew up in northern France in a small town on the North Sea where, she says, “My shoes were always full of sand and my ears full of wind.” She completed her undergraduate studies and an engineering degree in France, then came to the U.S. to study for her PhD in chemistry with a concentration in materials science.

Her passion for using “green chemistry” to help create more sustainable solutions for the world’s environmental problems is what drives her teaching. In 2010, she received the Washington College Alumni Association Award for Distinguished Teaching, and upon receipt of the award from UT, she thanked Washington College and the support of former Dean Emily Chamlee-Wright “for your leadership and for giving me the tools to succeed in my professional endeavors.”

But she also deflected the honor from 32

herself and onto others: Those women, she said, out there in our world, who are never in the spotlight, who have accomplished wonders for others, deserve to be recognized.

“This outstanding alumni award may be a good reason for me to give a big shout out to the super mothers who are living behind the scenes and who don’t get the opportunity to be in the spotlight, not even just once.

“When I learned that I won this award, my mom was next to me. I was at my parents’ house in France and I was checking my email on my cell phone. I started to read the email and I kept saying: ‘Oh, whoa, oh, whoa…’ I re-read it thinking, I am not reading this correctly. My mom kept asking me what was going on and I was so surprised that I couldn’t even find a way to translate what this award was all about. My brother came to the rescue. My dad was still confused after many explanations, but what I will never forget is the big embrace my tiny mother gave me that evening before going to bed. She

hugged me with all her strength and told me something I will never forget: ‘Mon Nanou speedy (this is what my parents call me) cherie, you will never cease to impress me.

What else will you be able to accomplish? I am so proud of you.’ This meant the world to me. I wasn’t raised in a family who celebrates our accomplishments with great fanfare.

Humility is a driving force. So comments like this one, from my mum, mean everything to me because they are rare.

“I dedicate this award to the amazing women, the super women in my French and American families: my Mamie, Eugenie, who taught me and my brother to always have confidence and faith; my Meme Suzanne, who made the best handmade pizzas in the world; my mother-in-law, Doris, who is the most driven person I know; my stepmotherin-law, Stephanie, who always finds the right words to make me feel better; and finally, my mom, Sabine, whom I admire for her strength and her unconditional love.”

Charlotte Hignutt is “still alive” and living in Palenque, Mexico. At 91 years young, she still cleans her large house, still cooks all her meals, and still walks about a mile each day. She mentions this not out of pride, but because otherwise, in her own words, “rigor mortis would arrive before death, and I can’t have that happening.”

June Walls Tassell and her husband, Harold, have relocated to a retirement community in Orlando. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a memorable family reunion.

June says they are enjoying the sunshine and “being kids again.”

Henry Biddle retired as an educator in 2009. Since then he and his wife have enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Europe. Maryland Miles Massey is nearing her 30th year as proprietor of Maryland’s Herb Basket, located on Hazel Lane in Millington, Md. She retired as Deputy Health Officer of Kent County in 1998, and previously served as the Director of Nursing for Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital (now Shore Medical of Chestertown) from 1968-1973.

Kathryn Simshauser Oplinger has been recognized by Who’s Who of Science and Engineering.

Joseph Getty was appointed to the Maryland Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, by

Governor Larry Hogan on June 1, 2016. Getty joined the Hogan administration as chief legislative officer in 2015 after serving in the Senate. “It is a great honor for me to be appointed to the court and to have the faith and confidence of Governor Hogan in my abilities to serve Marylanders in that capacity,” Getty told the Baltimore Sun. Larry Israelite retired from Liberty Mutual in August 2014, going to work for a startup company that was acquired shortly thereafter. Larry worked through the integration, retiring in January 2016. He recently published his third book More Lies About Learning (ATD Press). Luckily, his wife, Wendy, still enjoys his company.

They spend their winters in Naples, Fla., and would love to hear from other alumni in the area.

Jan Rosenthal teamed up once again with Ty Cook ’75 to coach Franklin High School of Baltimore County to a record 10-2 regular season. After running on the same midfield unit of the ’73 and ’74 lacrosse teams, coaching together was great fun and brought back a lot of memories – but both admit they’re not as fast as they used to be!

John Nevers sold his helicopter business and residential rental units and is now enjoying semi-retirement. In his spare time, he manages an investment portfolio with TD Ameritrade. He and his family will be relocating from Princeton to Chestnut Ridge, NY, where his son will begin high school and his daughter will enter sixth grade.

Thomas A. Adams was inducted into the Manhasset, New York Lacrosse Hall of Fame in May 2016. He was honored for 25 years of coaching youth lacrosse. Also in attendance that evening were former classmates and teammates Jesse Bacon ’82, Richard Grieves ’83, Paul Hooper ’82, Peter Jenkins ’82 and Charlie Curtis ’81, who all surprised TA that evening by attending the celebration in his honor.

Rose Brown M’87 works as a psychotherapist and social worker. She previously taught elementary school for 18 years, and was licensed by the Maryland State Police as an expert witness and investigator for 25 years.

John Buettner has been named vice president of marketing and digital communications at Stevenson University. The former director of media relations at Washington College, John joined Stevenson’s Office of Marketing and Digital communications in February 2009 as the assistant vice president of public relations. Arian Ravanbakhsh will be hosting “War on the Shore: Preserving the History of Maryland’s Eastern Shore,” at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference on November 5 in Annapolis. The session joins two institutions with a storied rivalry, Washington College and Salisbury University, to discuss student engagement at their archives and special collections. Archivists and students from both colleges will be in attendance to share their own experiences.

Peter Maller was recently named one of The Daily Record’s 2016 Most Admired CEOs. Peter is founding president of Maller Wealth Advisors, Inc. in Hunt Valley, Md. arla Hayden H’12, the executive librarian who shepherded the venerable Enoch Pratt Free Library into the modern age, is President Barack Obama’s pick to lead the Library of Congress. The former member of Washington College’s Board of Visitors and Governors has been widely hailed for her leadership in Baltimore, where she restored library facilities, updated digital technologies, and launched bold initiatives that addressed the public’s need for information, inspiration, and safe haven.

In recognition of her advocacy for libraries “as pillars of democracy and centers of community,” Hayden received the honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Washington College in September 2012.

“Dr. Hayden has devoted her career to modernizing libraries so that everyone can participate in today’s digital culture,” Obama remarked in making the nomination. “She has the proven experience, dedication, and deep knowledge of our nation’s libraries to serve our country well and that’s why I look forward to working with her in the months ahead. If confirmed, Dr. Hayden would be the first woman and the first African American to hold the position — both of which are long overdue.”

On September 14, 2016, Hayden was sworn in as the 14th Librarian of Congress, charged with overseeing the largest library in the world. Among her goals is to move aggressively to digitize precious material in the library’s collection of 162 million items.

Making Movies As a visual effects producer for Sony Picture Imageworks, Carey Smith-Rivara ’92 creates fantastical worlds that delight moviegoers across the country. by Meghan Livie ’09

W

ashington Post’s Stephanie Merry described the visual effects in Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass as “spectacular” and “wondrous.” For fans of visual effects, it’s just another fine example of the stunning VFX work Carey Smith-Rivara ’92 and her team have produced during her 15-year career at Sony Imageworks, the company Disney hires to make the magic happen.

Smith-Rivara has worked on the VFX for three iterations of Spider-Man, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Men in Black 3, and Edge of Tomorrow. While the Men in Black film was a personal favorite, Spider-Man 2 was the most critically acclaimed. “We won the Academy Award for best VFX for SpiderMan 2 in 2005,” she says. “That whole night was pretty unforgettable.”

over the last two decades, she says. “When I started in VFX there were very few women working in the industry, and if you had 100 shots in a movie it was considered a big VFX film. Now there are almost as many women as men in the studio, and I don’t flinch at 1,000 shots. On Alice Through the Looking Glass we were responsible for more than 1,600 VFX shots.”

Smith-Rivara’s journey into visual effects began at Washington College. “As a double major in English and drama, I loved all my professors and classes, but the drama department has a special place in my heart.

There wasn’t a class I didn’t enjoy, from Japanese theater, to set design, to directing,” she recalls. “Being a drama major was such an intense and immersive experience. When I wasn’t studying, I was acting or building sets. There wasn’t much time for anything else, but I wouldn’t have changed that for anything.”

She says her liberal arts experience taught her how to face challenges head-on. “I learned how to problem-solve, compromise, interact with people, lead, and collaborate,” she says. “I learned how to take care of myself and how to stand up for myself, and I did it in a supportive and nurturing environment with role models who were there to guide me along the way. Those things were the building blocks for everything else in my life.”

Her children, Logan 8, and Lila, 3, whom she considers her “biggest accomplishments,” would agree. “What I am most proud of is my family. I have two wonderful children and a husband I adore.

A day doesn’t go by without me using my theater training with them. Logan especially loves how well I can read a book, and Lila loves going to plays with me. She’s a huge Midsummer fan.”

Yvette Hynson began working as the coordinator of association services for the American Dance Therapy Association in Columbia, Md. Jude Pfister M’93 has published a new book, Charting An American Republic: The Origins and Writing of the Federalist Papers (McFarland, September 2016). Dr. Pfister is a public historian working for the National Park Service in Morristown, New Jersey, with experience in many of the most important historic sites in the U.S.

A

s the Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President of Policy at the Center for American Progress in the nation’s capital, Hilary Badger ’14 spends her days enmeshed in policy, watching political change happen from the inside. She has met with major political players involved in CAP’s progressive policy practices (think New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro, as well presidential candidate Hillary Clinton), to see how policy is made, and to make connections with other young politicos.

At the progressive think tank, analysts develop new policy ideas and challenge the media to cover major issues such as climate change, immigration, and genderbased income inequality—all topics Badger explored as a political science major. “So many professors made a huge impact on me,” Badger says. “Jennifer Hopper ignited my passion for inequality policy that I consider the bedrock of my career, while Melissa Deckman created a ‘safe space’ for political learning that demanded respect for our ideas and for one another, and made opposing opinions exciting and invigorating.

She welcomed a political junkie into her Chick Playwrights class full of experienced dramaturgs.

“My experience allowed me to begin my career with a baseline understanding of the political arena in Washington, the intersectionality of the important issues, and how to effectively analyze and communicate,” she says. “Washington is complex, and having a liberal arts degree prepared me to thrive here.”

She also understands the importance of life-work balance. “WC stands out for its population of highly involved and multitalented students who are always juggling school, sports, and a long list of activities and projects,” Badger says. “I thrived because I was able to be a full-time student, swim on a Division III team, serve on the Alumni Board, work on political campaigns, complete a thesis, and manage an online magazine all at once. Now I am able to handle a demanding job and make space for passion projects on the side — serving on the Executive Leadership Board of Lean In DC, volunteering on campaigns, and running.”

Ann Hymes, a retired real estate broker and active international volunteer teacher, has written a debut novel about a woman who escapes a suffocating marriage to uncover the family secrets buried in Chatham, Massachusetts.

With the unexpected inheritance of a bizarre oceanfront house called Whimsy Towers, the protagonist sets out to unravel family stories about her mother’s tragic death at sea and her dead grandmother’s strange house.

“Count Me In” E ach year, alumni engage in a little friendly competition in which they challenge their classmates to support today’s students, paying it forward through support for the same kinds of scholarships and programs that changed their lives.

At Fall Convocation in September, the Classes of 1947, 1968, 2011, and 2015 were recognized for their philanthropic support, measured in both percentage of class participation and in overall dollars.

The Class of 1947 raised $1,050,510, which qualified as the largest gift raised by a class beyond their 50th reunion, and earned them the coveted Chesapeake Cup. The William Smith Trophy,

awarded to the class with the highest participation rate, went to the Class of 1968, which achieved an enviable giving rate of 40 percent on its way to raising more than a half million dollars. In recognition of its gift of $505,128, the Class also took home The George Washington Trophy.

For the third year in a row, the Class of 2011 won The Victory Bell trophy, given in recognition of the largest gift from a class of the last decade. With an 18 percent participation rate generating a total of $17,446, The Class of 2011 also tied with the Class of 2015 to win the Golden Goose award.

In Memoriam Bennett Lamond, Professor of English Emeritus

Bennett Lamond, a beloved English professor who taught medieval and Victorian literature, died August 15, 2016. He was 77. Professor Lamond joined the faculty in 1965 as a young graduate from Fordham University.

He retired “at 39,” he liked to say, having devoted 39 years to teaching. As devoted as he was to the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Bennett was more committed to his students. The lifelong friendships forged in his classroom formed the core of his extended family. He dedicated much of his time and effort throughout his career to promoting the Sophie Kerr program. A former chair of the Department of English, he received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1992.

Garry E. Clarke, professor of music emeritus, former Dean of the College, and one-time Acting President, died suddenly July 3, 2016. With a master’s degree from Yale University, Garry joined the faculty in 1968 when the Department of Music was in its infancy.

Over the course of his 44-year career, he defined the music curriculum, built performance groups, 44

ran a concert series, gave piano recitals, and introduced two generations of Washington College students and professors to opera.

Professor Clarke was a longtime faculty advisor to members of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and was inducted into the brotherhood in 1999. When the Gibson Center for the Arts was under renovation, former music students, fraternity brothers, and friends raised more than $150,000 to name the music library for him. When he retired in 2012, several former students created an endowed fund to support the music program.

Molly Burrell Salisbury ’43, of Huntington Beach, Calif., died February 18, 2016. She was 95.

At WC, Molly was president of the Glee Club and, as a member of the Girls Trio, was known to be a spontaneous warbler. She was also involved in the Historical Society and the Mount Vernon Literary Society.

She loved coaching, and led girls’ athletic teams to victory for nearly 20 years. She became a guidance counselor at Federalsburg School and subsequently at Colonel Richardson High School, and remained there until 1966, when she became supervisor of pupil services for Caroline County.

Retiring in 1982, she remained involved in education, serving terms at the appointment of two governors on the Caroline County Board of Education. Among her survivors is Michelle Gibbons-Neff ’95. The family suggests that memorial donations may be made to Washington College.

Mary Lou Bartram ’48, of Baltimore, passed away February 21, 2016. She was 89. Mary Lou pursued studies in history and political science at WC. She was an editor for The Elm and played on the women’s basketball team.

Dorothy Lucille Little Martin ’46 passed away April 21, 2016.

She was 90. Dorothy became a nurse after graduating from Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She went to work for US Cushman Indian Hospital in Tacoma, Wash., where she met her husband, Robert, in 1950.

She retired from nursing to raise a family. She enjoyed traveling, flower arranging with her garden club, knitting, and entertaining.

Anne Elizabeth Burris ’48, of Rock Hall, Md., passed away June 16, 2016. She was 88. At WC, she was vice president of Zeta Tau Alpha, worked as librarian, and played badminton and field hockey. She remained devoted to her alma mater, serving as a Class Agent and a member of the Alumni Council, Women’s League, and the President’s Circle. She was honored with the Alumni Service Award in 1997. Anne was also a member of the Kent County Historical Society.

Ruth Nichols Mink ’46, of Federalsburg, Md., died August 13, 2016. The retired schoolteacher was 91. At WC, she majored in history and was a member of the Alpha Omega Pi sorority. Mrs. Mink taught English, history, and physical education for 37 years at Federalsburg High School.

Warren J. Rowe ’49, of Ocean City, Md., died March 29, 2016.

He was 92. Mr. Rowe was a U.S. Navy veteran. After college, he owned and operated an insurance agency. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, former member of the Towson Lions Club, and an avid Orioles and Ravens fan.

Virginia Miller Blocher ’51, of Hanover, Penn, died June 18, 2016. She was 87. After college, she was a secretary for Montgomery Junior College. She was married for 64 years to her husband, Charles M. Blocher, who survives her. Virginia enjoyed golf and playing bridge with her family.

Frank W. Brower Jr. ’51, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., passed away March 9, 2016. He was 87. Like his father, major league baseball Hallof-Famer Frank ‘Turkeyfoot’ Bower, he was an incredible athlete. He turned down the opportunity to play for the Washington Senators after graduating magna cum laude from WC, choosing to become an enlisted officer in the Navy. Frank went on to a career selling medical supplies, eventually forming his own business, Mission Companies, in the late 1970s. Frank was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame at Washington College in 1984.

Elizabeth Messer Wegener ’51, of Preston, Md., died May 11, 2016, at the age of 85. In 1955, she graduated from Goldey-Beacom College, and taught there until she was married. She then moved to New Jersey and opened the Wegener Silk Screen Service. Betty returned home to Caroline County in 1980, and graduated from Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in 1987. She was active in the Denton unit of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of Easton Memorial Hospital.

Col. Edgar L. Stephenson Jr. ’52, of Fairfax Station, Va., passed away March 5, 2016. He was 84.

Ed joined the Air Force shortly after graduation, becoming a colonel before retiring to a civilian career in 1979. He fully retired in 1998, and spent much of his time traveling with his wife.

Margaret Wilding Reuling ’54, of Green Valley, Ariz., died June 9, 2016. She was 83. She was active in nursing for many years.

His beloved wife and college sweetheart, Mary Lou Verdon ’58, died eight months earlier.

They met at WC in 1956, and were married in November of that year.

After college, Ebe returned to Smyrna to teach math, becoming the head of the math department.

He coached the high school basketball team from 1960-1969, and was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1983. Following his retirement, Ebe and Mary Lou enjoyed traveling the country.

Robert F. Altmaier ’55, passed away March 21, 2016. He was 84. After graduation, Bob joined the textile fibers department of DuPont, transferring to the advertising department five years later. He handled the advertising for a number of the company’s products, but was particularly proud of his work for DuPont’s “Stren” fishing line products. He retired in 1990, and spent many hours researching the life of his great-grandfather, gunsmith Peter Altmaier.

Kenneth R. Boum Jr. ’55, of Bel Air, Md., died March, 5, 2016. He was 84. Ken received his Master’s in Education from Loyola. While teaching at Middle River Junior High in 1958, he met his wife, Jean. By 1968, Ken oversaw the Reading Department of Essex Community College, and taught additional classes at Loyola. He would remain at Essex until he retired in 1993. Ken authored several children’s books and works on local history, and developed innovative methods to teach literacy to adults. He was active in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Harford County, and pursued volunteer service in many arenas.

Ebe Lynch Joseph Jr. ’56, of Smyrna, Del., passed away of a broken heart on July 6, 2016.

Emily deWaal Dryden Russell ’56, of Chestertown, died April 21, 2016. She was 81. Emily met her future husband, William R. Russell, Jr. ’53, at WC, where she was valedictorian of her class and president of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She and Bill were married February 16, 1957, and had two children, William “Bill” R. Russell, III ’80, and Sean E. L. Russell. In 1970, they moved to Kent Island.

Emily was active in the Episcopal parish, the local schools, and numerous charitable causes. In 2007, Bill and Emily moved to Heron Point in Chestertown.

Elizabeth Ann Cleaver ’57, of Chestertown, died April 6, 2016.

She was 81. In the year after graduation, Ann began teaching in Stevensville, Md., and married her college sweetheart, Robert Cleaver ’58, who survives her.

They were married for 58 years.

Together they relocated several times for Bob’s career. Upon retirement Ann and Bob returned to Chestertown, where she was active in the Kent & Queen Anne’s Alumni Chapter of WC. William R. Hitchens Jr. ’60, of Fort Myers, Fla., passed away February 27, 2016. He was 78. Bill graduated from Dickinson College School of Law in 1964. He was a member of the Delaware, Florida, and American Bar Associations.

Russell Q. Summers Jr. ’62, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., passed away May 13, 2016. He was 80.

Russell was a varsity athlete at

WC and a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. Russell was the district manager of Willamette Industries for 15 years; after retiring he started his own small business – Palm Tree Printing.

Russell was active in the Episcopal Church throughout his life and was an active member of country clubs both in Baltimore and Ponte Vedra Beach.

Patricia A. Coleman ’63, of Chestertown, died on April 26, 2016. She majored in English and spent many hours sailing on the Chester River. Patricia became a flight attendant with United Airlines, traveling to many of the world’s capital cities. She was part of a landmark case that eventually awarded female flight attendants the right to work past marriage and childbirth. After 9/11, Patricia volunteered to fly with grieving relatives of passengers of Flight 93 - a flight that was part of her own working route.

Jesse James Hinson Jr. ’65, of Baltimore, died May 25, 2016. He was 73. Jesse was a member of the Washington Players, the Canterbury Club, and the Washington Forum. He also worked on The Elm and played intramural sports.

Michael T. Tucker ’68, of Stamford, Conn., died July 9, 2016. He was 69. After graduation, he went on to earn his MBA and DBA at Boston University. For nearly 30 years he was a finance professor at The Dolan School of Business at Fairfield University. He retired last December as Professor Emeritus. He recently moved to Seattle, where his wife survives him.

Walter R. Lewis ’71, of Doylestown, Penn., passed away May 7, 2016. He was 67. Walt and his wife recently celebrated a milestone of 40 years of marriage.

He is deeply missed by his family and those close to him, but they take great solace in knowing he spent his life living true to himself.

Mary Jo Scheck Atwood ’79, of Mount Washington, Md., died February 17, 2016. She was 57.

She most recently managed Handbags in the City, a boutique in Harbor East. Mary Jo was an accomplished cook, specializing in French dishes. She was also fluent in French, traveling to the country numerous times.

Peter V. Hamill, Jr. ’80, of Annapolis, Md., died July 17, 2016.

He was 61. Very athletic, Pete was co-captain of the soccer team.

He also played lacrosse and was a member of the wrestling team.

He served in the U.S. Army and recently celebrated five years of sobriety. Pete enjoyed fishing, soccer, and the University of Michigan Wolverines.

Joanne “Jodee” Baccala ’81, of Severna Park, Md., died March 29, 2016. She was an accomplished singer, musician, teacher, and writer. She studied piano and voice at the Peabody Conservatory. Jodee recorded lead vocals as Jodee Valentine for the English rock band, “Thunderstick.” After returning to Maryland, she passed the baton to her private students.

Marilyn Krampf McMahon II ’89, died June 27, 2016. She was 48. Marilyn worked for the National Institutes of Health for nearly 20 years. Prior to that, she worked for the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Sol R. Schwartz ’92, of Pikesville, Md., passed away March 16, 2016.

John E. Littleton ’93, of Chestertown, died February 14, 2016.

He was 60. John graduated from Pittsville High School of Parsonsburg, Md. After college, he spent most of his life in Chestertown.

College Dedicates Cromwell Hall to Alumni Donors A gift from Barbara Townsend Cromwell ’55 and the late George T. Cromwell ’53 marks their longstanding love affair with Washington College.

B

arbara Cromwell’s memories of her time at Washington College are as clear and warm as the air on that beautiful Saturday morning in late September, when former classmates, friends, and family poured onto the front lawn of Barbara and George Cromwell Hall to celebrate the couple’s special affinity for Washington College, and to officially dedicate the academic building that now bears their name.

The couple attended Washington College in the days of study halls, women’s curfews, GIs in the classroom, and the waning tradition of football. With just 450 undergraduates on campus, they formed particularly close friendships that lasted a lifetime. George was an economics major and a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity; Barbara majored in history and was active in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

The couple began dating in George’s senior year. George graduated from Washington College in 1953 and then from Naval Officers Candidate School. He was on active duty aboard a Navy destroyer based in San Diego while Barbara completed her college degree.

The couple were married July 31,1955. And in the years that followed, Washington College was their bedrock.

“For Barbara and her late husband George, Washington College became part of their DNA—the glue that held together lifelong friendships, built relationships, and forged a strong allegiance to their alma mater,” President Sheila Bair remarked before the ribbon-cutting. “For them, Cromwell Hall is a valentine to Washington College, and a promise that this generation, and future generations, will also experience all the joys and the benefits associated with a Washington College education. Barbara, your entire Washington College family is eternally grateful.”

“George and I had four wonderful years here,” Cromwell told the crowd of wellwishers. “Just as there is today, there were great faculty and staff who were always accessible. We received an excellent education and forged friendships that have spanned a lifetime. I’m so grateful to have some of them here today to share this moment. George and I graduated, but we never really left the College. We continued to be active in alumni affairs and to lend our support in whatever way we could. We felt it was important to give back to the College that had given so much to us and to help ensure that future generations could have the same wonderful experiences we had.”

Historian Endows Internship Program at C.V. Starr Center This summer, Washington College and the C.V. Starr Center found a new friend in Jane Nevins, who made a commitment to the College for a $100,000 endowed fund to provide support for the summer intern program at the Starr Center.

The Founding Fathers Fellowship will support internship experiences for two students studying the American founding era, the Constitution, and our founders.

A recent newcomer to Chestertown, Nevins grew up in Southern California and worked there as a news reporter and editor covering California politics. A writing project that took her to Washington, D.C., in 1980 led to a new career when Ronald Reagan took office. Like several other Californians, she joined the Reagan administration, working in the first term with the U.S. Information Agency and, in the second, as a speechwriter for Secretary of Labor Ann McLaughlin. In the subsequent administration of George H.W. Bush, she was a speechwriter for HUD Secretary Jack Kemp. At the time of her retirement in 2013, Nevins was editor-in-chief of the Dana Press division of the Dana Foundation.

Working in the government, visiting the many historic sites in the region, and a serendipitous encounter with a biography of Alexander Hamilton turned Nevins’ liking for politics into a passion for the political brilliance of our nation’s founding fathers. She wrote a book about the Constitutional Convention, Turning 200: A Bicentennial History of the U.S. Constitution, published in 1987, and has been reading, writing, and learning about our nation’s founding ever since.

This year, she turned to Washington College to find a way to encourage and support the study of early American political history.

Nevins’ gift will help the Starr Center continue to partner with organizations like George Washington’s Mount Vernon, the Library of Congress, the National Constitution Center, and others.

Two More Banks Join the Brigade President Bair continues to court colleagues in the financial industry to support George's Brigade scholarships.

ver the summer, M&T Bank and Bank of the West pledged their financial support to George’s Brigade. The scholarship initiative, launched by President Sheila Bair in 2015, will improve college access for high-need, high-achieving, firstgeneration students by covering the full costs of their tuition, fees, room, and board. With these latest commitments, total support for the project surpassed $4 million in less than a year.

A significant fraction of that support has come from banking and financial institutions— including Avant, Inc., Thomson Reuters, PNC, and Morgan Stanley—that President Bair has persuaded to join her cause.

In July, M&T Bank committed to a four-year investment in the program, totaling $160,000. The bank is one of the oldest regional banks in the mid-Atlantic and one of the 20 largest commercial

bank holding companies in the U.S. “Supporting quality education is a key part of M&T’s commitment to strengthening the communities we serve,” says Nick Lambrow, Regional President.

Bank of the West announced its own $80,000 contribution in August.

Founded in 1874, the financial institution provides a wide range of banking services at more than 600 branches.

“The bank’s belief in education, as well as financial literacy, as the primary means to enable young people to move forward without excessive student debt fits perfectly with what we are working to achieve with George’s Brigade,” President Bair says.

The first group of 16 George’s Brigade students matriculated into Washington College as part of the class of 2020.

Growing up in Liberia during a civil war, Minty Abraham Wade ’04 understood from a young age the importance of protection for refugees in times of crisis. Now as a senior analyst with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Wade implements strategies to protect civilians and appropriate much-needed resources for struggling refugee populations in the Middle East and Asia.

During her time with USAID’s Office of Strategic and Program Planning, Wade has revisited the nightmare she endured as a child through the intense violence of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a dangerous rebel sect that waged a campaign of terror. “As a survivor of a brutal civil war who spent a significant portion of my life as a refugee, I know all too well the plight of women and children affected by the atrocities committed by the LRA,” Wade says. “As their strongest ally and advocate, I have successfully lobbied to have civilian protection considerations factored prominently into all military operations, which helped lessen reprisal attacks against civilians.”

She says she now speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves. “Because of instability in Africa and the Middle East, global leaders are now confronting the worst displacement crisis since World War II,” Wade says. “I would like to capitalize on my past experiences to inform and shape U.S. foreign policy related to conflict in Africa as well as the global migration crisis.”
