News from the Head of School

Greetings Alumni, Parents and Friends,
This fall, the reality of our rapidly shrinking world came even closer to home with the credit collapse, ensuing stock market instability, and the drastic drop in the price that lobstermen were receiving for their catch. In our own little corner of the world, we became even more aware of the interconnectedness of these institutions and even nations.
Like fishermen, Washington Academy has become ever mindful of the impact of global, state and local economies. We rely on enrolling students from our community, the state of Maine, the United States and around the world, in order to maintain and expand programming. At the State and local level, the Commissioner of Education has warned that school subsidies to our communities may be frozen for the 2010 and 2011 school years reducing the subsidy that would have gone to schools by $170,000, that state subsidy for this school year may be curtailed by $27,000,000 and that Insured Value Factor payments to Town Academies like Washington Academy will be reduced by $130,000 annually.
Despite the immediate challenges, we are confident, that as in the past, Washington Academy will continue to educate students in the same tradition of excellence that it has for over 216 years. As I scan back through the yearbooks of those who weathered the recession of the late eighties and even the Great Depression, I realize that the Academy provided students with a thriving academic and social community even during hard times. Within the walls of WA, life was still about learning, making friendships, and wins and losses on the athletic fields. Through academic rigor and a strong sense of community, WA prepared these students to contribute toward a more prosperous future.
Today it’s a balancing act between giving students a global perspective and instilling in them a real sense of traditional Downeast values. Globally, we are making great strides by offering Chinese language, teaching sustainable forestry and agriculture, and coastal ecology. Locally, we are also allowing students to participate in the community through internships, Students Teaching About Respect (STARS), Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG) and other service learning opportunities.
Outside of the school, WA is assisting our community by offering junior high band and industrial technology at no cost. Our high school coaches and athletes provide youth programs in soccer, basketball and wrestling to area elementary students. The Board of Trustees committed $80,000 from this year’s operating budget to area towns assisting with their loss in state subsidy for Insured Value Factor.
Alumni, parents and friends are doing their part to ensure these opportunities continue as well. Through last year’s annual campaign over $126,900 was raised to be reinvested in the lives of WA students. We are grateful for each and every gift and thank you for being part of the WA community.
Sincerely,

Judson McBrine Head of School

National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist
Judson L. McBrine, Head of School at Washington Academy, announces that Alice McBride, a senior at WA, has been named a semifinalist for the National Merit Scholarship. Over 1.5 million students in more than 21,000 high schools nationwide entered the 2009 National Merit Scholarship program by taking the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). The 16,000 Semifinalists represent the highest-scoring students in each state and represent less than 1 percent of each state’s high school seniors.
Alice is the daughter of George and Lee McBride of Machiasport. While at WA, Alice has been involved with chorus, STARs, National Honor Society, swimming, soccer and tennis. She plans on attending college to study biological sciences after graduation. National Merit Scholarship Finalists will be named in early Spring of 2009.

Judson L. McBrine, Head of School, announced Washington Academy’s Students and Teachers of the First Quarter on November 26. Selection for this recognition is based on academic achievement and citizenship. Two students from each grade are chosen each quarter to receive this award. In addition, four faculty members are selected.

PINK Stands up to Bullying with STArs
A group of WA students that participate in the STARs program traveled to Bay Ridge Elementary in Cutler to spread the message about preventing bullying. The kids enjoyed a puppet show and magic tricks. Pink is this year’s color worn by every Bay Ridge student and staff in support of bullying prevention, a central mission of the STARs program.

WA’s commitment to embrace and meet the education challenges of providing the highest quality of education to its students is heart warming to say the least. Congratulations to the Board of Directors for its ability to attract and maintain administrative staff so that the Board’s educational objectives can be achieved.”

Four WA generations

June 4, 2008
Dear Mr. McBrine,
I am a grandson of Ralph S. Hayward, once a teacher at your school around the 1950-1960’s. My father, Harold Dale Hayward, Sr., was one of his sons. I have three sisters and two brothers.
My granddad was a person I always admired for his writings, his songs, and his love of family. We only saw them, him and my grandmother Edna, once or twice a year. The last time I saw them was in 1967 when my wife and I took our honeymoon trip to Machias just to see them.
I have a booklet of some of his writings. Some stories bring back some very pleasant memories and some bring tears of their lives together, and some are great food for thought.
I am wondering if you could put a note into one of your issues of the Academy newsletters to ask any former students if they could send me a short note about their memories of my granddad that I could, in turn, put together and share with my siblings.
If you would like a copy of the booklet I have made, please let me know.
I thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Dale Hayward

canoe Donation
Ken Smith ‘58 donated a 13 foot stream canoe mold to WA’s Vocational Program. He built his first canoe in the mid 1960’s and continues to build molds and canoes as a hobby. Ken, who is now retired, likes to spend his days hunting and fishing.
Dear WA,
Regrettably, as you may have heard, my father Lewis Huntley passed away on October 15th. Dad really felt strongly about WA. He graduated in 1942 and each of his sons also graduated from WA. My younger brother and I had perfect attendance for four years and he often bragged about that. He felt that the accomplishments reflected the values that WA stood for. Even during the last days of his life, he was hoping that the Academy was “going to be okay” in terms of getting the candy that they needed. He really tried hard to take care of the Academy as the Academy had helped his family over the years. One of Dad’s wishes was for any donations in his memory to be given to a select few organizations of which WA is one. This donation has been given by my co-workers at the Minute Maid Business Unit of the Coca-Cola Company and by the Chinese and Thai Baptist Church, both located in Houston, Texas. Thanks for working so closely with my Dad. His work was his life and you certainly brought him a lot of joy.
Thanks,
