The Individual Student We know, respect, and support each student.

Washington Academy is a school that embraces new adventure. Since John Hancock, then the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, signed the charter founding the school in 1792, WA has moved locations, constructed new buildings, and opened its doors to students from around the world.

One of the characteristics I enjoy most about Washington Academy is the fact that we honor its history and tradition while embracing progressive and comprehensive academic programs that prepare students for any career path they choose in the future. Caring and expert teachers introduce students to a wide variety of courses, while sharing a passion for their subject in the hope that students will discover their own passion.

Today Washington Academy welcomes boys and girls, about 50% of each gender. WA has over 325 day students and about 80 residential students— representing more than 20 surrounding communities and more than 15 countries. This makes WA truly a global campus located in the easternmost corner of the United States.

CORE VALUE

The Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship & Health Occupations will be a game changer for WA students. We have been about preparing students for the future for over 225 years and in fact it is the very premise of our existence. The important distinction is that we are not tasked with actually building the future. We simply need to prepare students that will build the future here in Washington County and around the world.

The Student Union, which will house a new cafeteria and a rec center will allow us to provide a better student experience.

It will also help reduce food insecurity in our community by aiding us in providing free breakfast, free lunch, free after school snack, the free summer meals program and our distribution of food through the Good Shepherd Food Bank and our Community Garden.

The positive impact our teachers and students make on our community every day is tremendous. WA is looking forward to continuing to partner with community members and organizations as we strive to make an even greater impact!

Community Partnerships/ Community Engagement

Dedicated and Diverse Faculty

We bring teachers and students together in relationships that challenge, inspire, and nurture each student’s intellect, confidence, and determination.

Students and staff at WA participate in Community Service days throughout the year and hold two school-wide Community Service days each year. Students and staff fan out across Washington County, covering a geographic area twice the size of Rhode Island, to serve their own towns in any way they can.

Amount of Financial Assistance provided for local scholars over last four years: Alumni commitment to leadership and education is apparent in the classroom. However, outside of the classroom consistent support from WA friend Frances Robinson Mitchell has been overwhelming. Frances is the niece of John Tyler Robinson a WA graduate of the Class of 1905. Throughout the years Frances has shared many fond memories of her uncle and his years at WA. This fall Frances tied the past to the future by establishing the John Tyler Robinson Scholarship. This scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2018. The Robinsons’ commitment to Washington Academy education is over one hundred years old and will continue in the name of John Tyler Robinson.

We prepare students for successful and responsible global citizenship.

WA’s Jobs For Maine Graduates students proudly display the recognition at Thomas College for their outstanding commitment to community work.

Inspiring innovation and discovery through community partnerships The Washington Academy Trustees are committed to innovation and entrepreneurship, as is our administration and faculty. We are excited to introduce the Maker Space, our idea laboratory, where students and faculty can exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, and curricula can more easily be integrated to achieve true applied learning. The IEHO Center will also provide space for the New Media Lab, the Entrepreneurship Incubator, and dedicated space for WA’s long-running Certified Nurse Assistant program, and the introduction of our NEW Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy classes. The space will support the Computer Programming, Video Game Design, Robotics, as well as CADD, Digital Art & Animation, ShopBot Engraving and 3D Printing areas. The Modern Day Apprenticeship program and Applied Engineering add to the enormous opportunities students and faculty will have to integrate curricula across the many departments and course offerings at Washington Academy. The IEHO Center allows us to build on the partnerships that we have established with small business and local organizations with a goal of preparing students to enter the workforce with skill sets that our local economy can benefit from.
