Hello,Raiders!
It’sbeenacelebratoryyearfilledwithmanyreasons tobeaproudRaider!Iamquicklyapproaching thirtyyearsatWashingtonAcademyandstill amazedatthespiritoftheRaiderfamily.Everyyear, wewelcomeexcitednewfamilymembersfromlocal townsandaroundtheglobe.Theiradditionto campusbringsnewenergy,newfriendships,andthe creationofnewmemories.
Thejoyofmemoriesandtheirabilitytounifyand createspiritwasapparentthissummerwhenover onehundredalumsgatheredintheGardner Gymnasiumforthefirsttimeinfiveyears(page6). Beingtogetheragain,tellingstories,andcelebrating theOldAcademy’sbicentennial(1823-2023)with songandcakecreatedasenseofbeinghome.
ThecelebrationcontinuedintothefallwhentheBoardcelebratedandhonoredDr. JohnGaddis‘65.JohnretiredfromtheBoardwithoverthirtyyearsofserviceto WashingtonAcademy(page8).HispassionforbeingaRaiderandhiscommitmentto leadtheschoolintothefuturehasbeenextensiveandimpressive.Johnhasleftbehind alegacyofservicetoensuretheRaiderfamilycontinuestogrow.
RaiderspiritpeakedduringHomecomingweekendwhenthe2023Classwasinducted intotheWashingtonAcademyAthletic HallofFame(page4).Friends,family members,andalumscelebratedtheinductionofthirteenindividualRaiderathletes andthe1990CheerTeam.Thirty-threeyearshadpassedsincethememorablestate championshipwasclinched.However,watchingtheCheerTeamseemedlikeitwas yesterday(page3).Tableswerepushedtogether,photosweretaken,andlaughterwas heardastheTeamreunitedtoaccepttheirhonor.
Thisfall,facultyandstaffalsocelebratedMrs.Maker’sselectionasWashingtonCounty TeacheroftheYearandfinalistforMaineStateTeacheroftheYear(page10).Mrs. Makermakesteachinglookeasywithhands-onlearning,citizenscienceprojects,and communityandstudentcollaborations.Outsidetheclassroom,theRaiderfootball teamwontheMaineIndependentLeagueChampionshipandreturnedtocampuswith acelebratorymotorcade(page11).
IamproudandhonoredtocelebratetheClassof2024'sTop10students(page12). TheseyoungRaiderswillattendvariouscollegesinthefall,pursuingimpressive majors.Theyinspireusall.TheNationalMeritScholarshipProgramhasselected ValedictorianDakodaDavisasaNationalMeritScholarFinalist.Heisoneof16,000 studentsnationallywhohavereceivedthishonor!
PerhapsthegreatestshowofRaiderPrideoverthepastyearwastheextensivework theWAstaffandfacultymembersspentonre-accreditingWashingtonAcademy.The processtooktwoyearstocomplete,andaNewEnglandAssociationofSchoolsand CollegesCommitteevisitedcampustwiceforevaluation.Thenewsarrivedthisfall thatourre-accreditationwasapproved,andtheworkofourRaiderfamilywillallow formanymoreRaidercelebrations!IhopeyouenjoythisspiriteditionofWAToday, pausetoreflectfondlyonyourWAmemories,andcelebratebeingaRaider!

CheeringforChampions
ItwasthefirstweekendinOctober 2023,andthecampuswasbuzzing withhomecomingactivitiesandthe thirdannualAthleticHallofFame InductionCeremony-itwastheperfect timetohonorandcelebratethe memorablespiritofthe1990Raider CheerTeam.Althoughthemembers nevercheeredintheGardner Gymnasium,theirteampresencewas immediatelyfeltastheypushedtables togetherinthefrontrowtoreuniteand dowhattheydidbest:cheerforhall inductees.
ThereisnodoubthowtheseRaiders clinchedtheClassCStateCheerleading Championshipin1990.JustasHead CoachKathyQuimbyHarmon‘74 mentoredtheirfloorroutines,Kathy retookcenterstagetohighlightand honortheteam’saccomplishmentsas champions.Proudly,Kathysharedthe team’spreparationjourneyforthat championshipcompetition,including yearsofsummercampparticipation, endlesspractices,andthesteadybuild ofschoolspirit!
TheTeamwasuniqueinitspreparation, astheircompetitorswerehavingtheir routineschoreographed,theseRaiders weredeterminedtocreatetheirown routinesastheycontinuedtoscorehigh increativity.Partnerstuntsproved challengingintheseroutines,soboys wereaddedtotheteamforthefirsttime. causingAthleticDirectorMr.Gardnerto tellmeto putalidonit!”
InFebruary1990,attheBangor Auditorium,theTeamperformedatits peak,winningfirstplaceoutofforty-one competingcheerteamsandbecoming statechampions.Itisanunforgettable memoryforfourteenRaiders,andtheir inductionintotheHallofFamewillbea historicalmemoryforever.






AthleticHallof Fame2023
TheWAAthleticHallofFamewas createdin2018withtheintention tohonorthoseRaiderstudent-athletes whohavedemonstratedexceptional athleticperformancewhilemaintaining importantlifelongcharactertraits,such astheabilitytobeagoodteammate, solidindividualcommitment,andthe desiretostriveforexcellence.
Homecomingweekend,October6-7, 2023,wastheperfectweekendto celebratetheHall’sthirdclassof inductees.
Campuswasalreadyspirited;however, theGardnerGymnasiumwasfilledwith warmmemoriesofRaiderathletesand competitionsfromoverseventydecades. Severalcoachesandteammatestookthe stageafterasit-downdinnertoreminisce andbringthecrowdtogetheronceagain withRaiderathletics.Thirteenindividual Raiderathletesandoneteamwere inductedintotheWAAthleticHallof Fame. Mr.McBrineremarkedaboutthe evening,“It’ssuchanhonortobeinthe sameroomwithalloftheseoutstanding Raiderathletes.”

The27thannualTrusteeTeawasheldoncampus, August 5,2023.Theeventprecededthealumni reunionintheGardnerGymnasium,whichmany communitymembersattended.WAfriendsandfamilyof thehonoreeswereinattendance.Formany,itwasasmall reunion,asguestscelebratedthe2023Distinguished Educator,William“Bill”Holmes‘61,andtheDistinguished CommunityServiceHonoree,theWesleyFoundation.

Appropriately,RichardGardner‘57introducedBilland broughtwarmthandlaughtertotheroomashetalked abouthislong-timefriend.BillHolmeswasanengaged student,aRaider,andawell-roundedWAathlete, participatinginbasketball,baseball,andvolleyball.After graduatingfromWashingtonAcademy,hebecamea teacherandultimatelyfulfilledhisdreamofmentoring andeducatingyoungpeople.Hewasabelovedteacherat WashingtonAcademyfortwenty-sixyears.Hisstudents describedhimasateacher,coach,andfriend.
WABoardofTrusteeDeanMcGuire‘99 introducedthe WesleyFoundationastherecipientoftheCommunity ServiceAward.TheFoundationhasgenerouslyimpacted youthswithintheareawithdonationstoLittleLeague teams,schoolathleticprograms,student-athlete recognitionawardsandprograms.Theirgrowthasa foundationhasenabledthemtoacquirelandinMachiasto buildayouthrecreationcenter.ThenewsoftheCenter wasannouncedattheTea,makingtheeventevenmore memorable.Mrs.BeckieHennesseyacceptedtheawardon behalfoftheFoundation.

2023AlumniReunion
TheWAAlumniAssociationspent the pastyearplanningthefirst in-personcampusreunioninoverfour years.TheReunion,heldonAugust5, celebratedbeingtogetheragainand includedabirthdaypartycelebrating theOldAcademy’sbicentennial.Alumni AssociationPresidentMichael Hinerman‘69hasbeenhostingmonthly meetingsoncampuswiththe Associationofficerstoplansocialevents andfundraisersandimprovealumni communication.
Thefirstreunionafterpost-pandemic yearswasasuccess!Michaelopenedthe eventwithalumninewsasguests enjoyeddinner.AlumniAssociation TreasurerKathyHarmonspokeabout thefirst200yearsandthesignificance oftheOldAcademytoWashington Academyanditsalumni.Kathy remarked,“Myfather,mybrothersand sisters,myhusband,ourchildren,andI haveallbeeneducatedwithinitswalls andclimbedanddescendedthestairs goingtoandfromtheclassroomsas thousandsofothershave.Someday,I hopetotakemygreat-grandchildren insideandthattheyenjoythehistoryas muchasIandmanyothersdo.Ithink it’stimetopaytributetoWashington Academy’soldestbuildingbylighting thecandlesandsinging,Happy Birthday.”Atthattime,theGardner Gymnasiumeruptedinsong,andthe HeadofSchoolMr.McBrinecutacake incelebration.


Theeveningalsoincludedastudent updateontheexperienceofbeinga Raider.ColetonWhitney‘24spokeabout theopportunitiesheenjoysasa student-athleteandhispost-secondary aspirations.Coletonshared, “Ibegan myjunioryearwiththeexperienceof beingapartofaverycompetitivevarsity soccerteam,whichendedtheseasonas theNorthernMaineFinalists.My academicyearwasjustasbusy.Iam interestedingoingtocollegefor engineering,somyclasseswere weightedwithscienceandmath.Itook honorsphysics,engineering,honors precalculus,andtwoearlycollege classes.Ihavebeenbusy!”
NoahRoos‘23,waspresentedwiththe 2023AlumniAssociationScholarship andspokeaboutattendingthe UniverisityofMaineinMachiasand pursuinganengineeringdegree.The Associationawardsthescholarship annuallytoadeservingRaiderpursuing post-secondaryeducation.Throughout the2023-24schoolyear,theAssociation hasbeenfundraisingforthe2024 scholarshipandrecognizesthe importanceoftheaward.
TheAssociationplanstoannounce alumnisocialdateslaterintheyearand looksforwardtocelebratingtogether againin2025.

WashingtonAcademycelebrates theremarkablejourneyand unwaveringcommitmentofoneofits mostbelovedalumsanddedicated trustees,Dr.JohnGaddis,D.O.Forover threeandahalfdecades,Dr.Gaddis'65 hastirelesslyservedWashington Academy,leavinganindeliblemarkthat resonatesintheheartsofmany.
HisrelationshipwithWashington Academybeganasastudent,graduating in1965.Dr.Gaddis'timeattheAcademy wasmarkednotonlybyacademic excellencebutalsobyactive engagementandleadershiprolesthat foreshadowedhisfuturecommitmentto theschoolandtheEastMachias community.Asastudent,heheld positionssuchasclasstreasurerand president,exemplifyinghisearly dedicationtoserviceandleadership.He alsoparticipatedasaRaiderathleteon championshipcrosscountryand basketballteams.
Dr.Gaddis'commitmenttoWashington Academyextendedbeyondhisstudent years.Hemadesignificantcontributions asanalum,servingontheBoardof Trusteesfrom1987to2023.Inthisrole, heplayedapivotalpartinshapingthe Academy'spolicies,vision,andgoals. invaluableassettotheBoard.Rhoda Hodgdon‘68isaWAalumandlocal businessownerwhoservedontheWA BoardofTrusteesalongwithDr.Gaddis formanyyears.Ms.Hodgdonreflects, "Throughmeagerbudgets,lessmeager budgets,expansions,andnoexpansions, fromdoingthings'theoldway'vs.doing things'thenewway,'Johnhasremained asteadfastinfluencefortheBoard."
Hisachievements,bothasastudentathleteandadedicatedtrustee,area testamenttoDr.Gaddis'commitmentto hisalmamater.Throughouthislife,he embodiedtheschool'smottofromhis graduatingclassof1965:"Withfond memoriesofthepast,welaunchsteadily ahead."
Hispassionforservicewasnotonly demonstratedbyhisworkontheBoard butalsothroughhisactiveinvolvement inthecommunity.Dr.Gaddishasbeen knownasabelovedfamilydoctorinthe communitybeforerecentlyclosinghis practice.Asapracticingphysician,he servedastheWAschoolphysician, providingschoolphysicalstostudents.
In2016,hewasrecognizedbytheWA BoardofTrusteeswiththeDistinguished CommunityServiceAward.
Mr.McBrinestates,"Dr.Gaddisloves WashingtonAcademyandcaresvery muchforthepeopleinourcommunity. Inmyearlyyearsasheadofschool,itwas notunusualforhimtostopinduringhis lunchbreak,eventhoughhehadahectic schedule,toseehowIwasdoing.Even thoughheisnolongerontheBoard,he continuestostopintoofferhelpand encouragementfortheschoolheloves."




WelcomingNew BoardMember

BrianBragg‘96 isacommercialairline pilotwithUnitedAirlines.After graduatingfromWashingtonAcademy,Brian attendedtheUnitedStatesAirForceAcademy andgraduatedin2000withabachelorof sciencedegreeinenvironmentalengineering. Afterlivingawayfortwentyyears,hereturned toEastMachiasin2020.
AsaRaider,Brianwasastudentleader participatinginStudentCouncilandNational HonorSociety.Hewasalsoathree-sport RaiderathleteandDACAll-Star.
Brian'sreturntotheareareignitedhispassion forWA.Heremarks,“Iwashumbledtobe invitedtositontheBoardandaccepted becauseIhaveagreatrespectforWAand wanttobesuremychildrenwillbeableto havethegreateducationIdid.”Brianbelieves educationisalifelongendeavor,andheis proudtobeinvolved.
HissonBrendan‘25,isacurrentRaiderand engagedstudent.Herecentlyperformedasa soloistattheWAPopsNightandhadamajor roleintheWAPlayer’sdramaproduction, MurderattheBookClub.
BrianlooksforwardtohisworkontheBoard andsendingfourmoreRaiderstoWashington Academy.

AmeriCorpsComestoCampus WashingtonCountryTeacherof
Duemainlytothededicatedeffortsofour AmeriCorpsmembersAshleyKromerandMikaela Taylor,thespiritofserviceisflourishingintheRaider family.SupportedbytheirAmeriCorpstrainingandWA mentors,theseyoungchange-makershavebrought boundlessenergy,passion,andcommitmenttoourschool, enrichingthelivesoftheWAstudentsandstaff.
MikaelaTaylorservesasayouthmentortostudentsduring 4th-periodstudyhallandalsoextendshersupportto studentsfromPassamaquoddyschoolsofSipayikand IndianTownship.Meanwhile,AshleyKromerisnurturing growthinourschoolthroughtheSustainableGardening& AgricultureclassandherdedicatedeffortsintheWA CommunityGarden.AstheliaisonbetweentheWA Administration,theScienceDepartment,theCareer TechnologyDepartment,andHealthyAcadia,Ashleyhas beeninstrumentalinensuringourstudentspractice environmentalstewardshipwhilecultivatingfoodand caringforourgardenfacility.Ashleydevotesasignificant portionofherdaytohands-onengagementwithstudents, ensuringadirectimpactontheireducationaljourneyand anopportunityformentorship.
JenniferCravenandSophiaDoremus,AmeriCorps employeeswhosuperviseAshleyandMikaela,expresstheir joyatWA'scommitmenttotheAmeriCorpsexperience.WA isproudtobeaGoodwillofNorthernNewEngland AmeriCorpssitewherethespiritofAmeriCorpsflourishes, participatinginitsmovementandcreatingalastingimpact onthelivesofourstudents.

Ascienceteacher,Mrs.ColleenMaker,wasnamed bytheMaineDepartmentofEducationasthe2023 WashingtonCountyTeacheroftheYear.Shewasoneofeight educatorschosenbytheDepartmenttomoveforwardinthe 2023MaineStateTeacheroftheYearprocessandwas ultimatelychosenasoneofthetopfoureducatorsinthe state.
Mrs.Makerteacheswithasmileandisneverseenwithoutit! Sheworkstirelesslytofind“out-of-the-classroom”learning opportunitiesforherstudentsandbelievesinbuildinga studentcommunitythatcollaboratesincitizen-science education.
Mr.McBrine,describesMrs.Maker,“Herkindnessand passionarebalancedwithexpertiseinscienceeducation. Shehasmadesustainabilityofmarineresourcesrealfor students,anddemonstratedhowimpactfulitisfortheir familiesandcommunities.”
Mrs.MakernowbelongstothiselitegroupofMainestate educatorsandmeetsoftenwithherpeerstoexpandher currentcurriculumandteachingstyle.Thissummer,shewill travelwiththegrouptoaprofessionaldevelopment workshopinColorado.
Forateacherpridingherselfonstudentandcommunity collaboration,Mrs.Maker’scommunityhasnowbecome muchwider.
RaiderFootballIndependent LeagueChampions
ThisfallRaiderfootballcelebrateditssecondyearas MaineIndependentLeagueChampions.Theteam wascoachedbyIanPratt,LupeSoto,andJasonDelleGatta. ThecompetitionfortheteamtookthemalloverMaineand intoNewHampshire.
TheTeamhadaregularseasonrecordof5-1anda2-0 playoffseasonrecord.TheRaidersbeattheGladiatorsof Berlin,NewHampshire,fortheleaguechampionship.
The2024-25schoolyearwillseeRaiderfootballreturningto statehighschoolcompetitioninthesmallschooleight-man competition. WashingtonAcademyhasn’tplayedatthis levelsince2019.Theseasonwillconsistofeightregular seasongamesandtwoplayoffgames.AthleticDirectorJustin Crosman‘95remarksaboutthereturntotheMaine Principals’Associationcompetition,“SinceWAistheonly schoolinWashingtonCountyofferingfootballasasport,I amhappytohavetheprogramplayingMPAteamsasit continuestodevelopcompetitively.”
ThefirsthomegameispreseasonandscheduledforAugust 24againsttheEllsworthEagles.

TheNationalMeritScholarshipProgramnamed WashingtonAcademyseniorDakodaDavisasa semifinalistatthebeginningoftheschoolyear.The69th annualNationalMeritScholarshipProgramannounced 16,000semifinalistswhowillcontinuetothecompetitionfor 7,140NationalMeritScholarshipsworth$28million.
Dakodaisawell-roundedandengagedWashington Academystudent.HeisveryactiveinWashingtonAcademy studentleadershipasaclasspresident,studentcouncilcopresident,andathree-yearmemberoftheprestigious NationalHonorSociety.Dakodahasbeenahighhonor studentthroughouthisyearsatWashingtonAcademy. Inthesummerof2023,hespentaweekattheConsider EngineeringProgramattheUniversityofMaineatOrono. ConsiderEngineeringisacompetitiveprogram,withonly halftheapplicantsconsidered.Dakodawasoneoftwo WashingtonCountystudentschosentoparticipate.Healso spentanadditionalweekattendingtheUniversity'sCohen InstituteHighSchoolLeadershipProgram,honinghis leadershipskillsandpassionforcivics.
DakodahasrecentlybeenannouncedastheClassof2024 ValedictorianandselectedasaNationalMeritScholarship Finalist.Heisnoweligiblefor2024NationalMerit ScholarshipAwardconsideration.
