On a sunny, summer day, surrounded by some of the best fishing in Northwest Wisconsin, it is easy to see why Birchwood is known as the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin. First stop? Take a picture with the giant bluegill at the edge of town, of course! The area offers endless fishing opportunities. A local favorite for fishing, canoeing or just a day of exploring is the Sawmill Park area just to the north of Birchwood. The area offers a high density of glacial lakes, primitive camping and two canoe portage routes. In addition to the fishing opportunities, Birchwood is also well-known for their vast ATV and snowmobile trail systems. Easy trail access to lodging, dining, and gas make Birchwood a great entry point for exploring the area trails.

From a quaint downtown, rich with railroad history that paved the way for Spooner, to one-of-a-kind festivals and events, and must-see attractions. Not to mention the town is the home of the Spooner Rodeo, Washburn County’s only brewery, eclectic shopping, Railroad Park & the Railroad Memories Museum, recreation of all sorts, the World’s Largest Musky & Walleye Fish Hatchery, and so much more... there’s a little something for everyone to enjoy in the Spooner area year ‘round.

Imagine a downtown just a block away from a sparkling 2,600-acre lake, public beach, park, bandshell, and campground that is the enchanting community of Shell Lake. SPRINGBROOK & TREGO
Located along Highway 63 between Spooner and Hayward, the towns of Earl, Springbrook and Trego offer incredible opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. The Namekagon River: Wisconsin’s Moving National Park flows right through all of these communities. The river offers excellent paddling even for those less experienced, fishing, camping, hiking and a peaceful escape into the natural northwoods beauty.
MINONG
If you’re looking for a secluded Northwoods vacation, be sure to check out the Minong area. Well-known for its vast ATV and snowmobile trail systems, the area offers access to lodging, dining and gas directly from the trails. Minong also offers many fishing opportunities in the area lakes, including a Kids’ Fishing Pond on the east end of town. Home of the Jack Link’s Aquatic & Activity Center, there’s always something fun happening in Minong!
Located in both Washburn and Sawyer counties, Stone Lake is a small treasure with a big heart. Stone Lake’s unique shops, incredible restaurants and sparkling lakes welcome visitors throughout the year with their Northwoods hospitality. This is especially evident in the fall when Stone Lake hosts their annual Cranberry Festival with marsh tours, arts & craft vendors, krate box derby, parade, and delicious cranberry treats. While Cranberry Festival might be the most popular time of year in Stone Lake, you won’t want to miss exploring the beauty of the area lakes year ‘round. From its namesake, Stone Lake, located right near the downtown area, to Big Sissabagama and Sand Lake, both well known by local anglers, there are plenty of fun days on the lake to be found.

Long Lake, which stretches 19 miles and reaches depths of over 70 feet, is known as the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin. One of the Sarona area’s featured attractions, Long Lake offers several resorts, bait shops and restaurants. The clear, spring-fed water keeps visitors coming back to Long Lake year after year, generation after generation. Sarona is also home to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, a 600- acre nature preserve, with 13 miles of hiking trails, including the famous “Bog Trail.” Hunt Hill offers nature programming for the whole family and provides the perfect location to explore the beautiful wildlife habitats of Northwest Wisconsin. The Long Lake & Sarona area also offers excellent golfing, miles upon miles of ATV & Snowmobile trails, and incredible fishing opportunities.

Here are some fun facts about the waterways of Washburn County: • Washburn County is home to the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin, Long Lake and the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin, Birchwood. • There are a total of 964 lakes in the county with 30,000 acres of water surface. • Rivers and streams are abundant. There are roughly 700 miles flowing through the county. • Washburn County is home to the Namekagon River: Wisconsin’s Moving National Park. • There are 21 Class I trout streams in the county and another 13 streams classified as Class II and III. • There are two oversized tributes to the fish of Washburn County. You’ll find a giant bluegill as you enter Birchwood and a two-tailed Walleye near the beach at Shell Lake. • The Spooner Fish Hatchery, also known as the Governor Tommy Thompson Fish Hatchery, is the world’s largest hatchery of its kind and raises stock that supplies much of Wisconsin’s lakes.

WHAT MAKES A REAL FAMILY VACATION? Family vacations are fun. Traveling in the car with the kids yelling “are we there yet”, is worth it when you pull up to your cabin, walk down to the lake and feel the stress of “real life” melt away. Let the fun begin. THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS WE DON’T EVER WANT TO CHANGE. One of those things - our favorite lake. We want it to be as clear as the first time we dipped our toes into that sparkling water. We want the fishing to be as good as we remember it from our childhood. We want to feel good about our kids jumping into the lake feet first. In order for our lakes to be “just how you remember them,” we need your help. Protecting our lakes is up to everyone. Every local. Every visitor. Every person. Here are some tips to help keep our waters clean: • Clean boats. Clean water. Use the decontamination stations and follow all DNR recommendations for keeping Aquatic Invasive Species out of our lakes. • If you brought it to the lake, take it with you when you go. • Keep chemicals away from the water. The lake isn’t a bathtub and shampoos and soaps contain ingredients that can be harmful to the delicate ecosystem. • Make sure your bait is non-toxic and most importantly, lead free. Lead can harm loons, trumpeter swans and other waterfowl. • Go slow near shorelines. Large wakes can cause erosion.

SPOONER MURAL - At the corner of Walnut and River Street in Spooner stands a mural where for more than 80 years a two-story wooden building stood. The mural depicts the Corner Tavern and the redhead in the front is none other than one of the owners, Aggie, commonly referred to as “that redhead.”

The most exciting part of the renovations are a new display in the lobby that will change yearly. NAMEKAGON RIVER: WISCONSIN’S MOVING NATIONAL PARK
Flowing through the heart of Washburn County you’ll find the Namekagon River. A true treasure - one that seeps into your soul just minutes into your journey. While it isn’t far off the beaten path, there’s something about spending time on the Namekagon that simply can’t be replicated.
Washburn County is home to approximately 45 of this nearly 100 mile long waterway. With nearly half of the river located in the county, it’s no wonder the Namekagon was voted “Top Attraction” in the Best of WashCo. A northern tributary of the St. Croix, the Namekagon is protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The Washburn County stretch of river begins between Hayward Landing and West River Landing and continues through Trego to Fritz Landing. Most of the Namekagon is undeveloped, offering a genuine wilderness experience to kayak, canoe, tube, or fish. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons, while overhead, eagle and osprey can often be seen. The river is classified as Class I-II rapids. Washburn County offers six outfitters, over 30 river-access campsites, and several resorts & campgrounds along the river. BIRCHWOOD AREA CANOE ROUTES Hidden gem. Serene. A mini boundary waters. The Birchwood Canoe Routes are all that and more. A trip to this little known primitive area is just what you need to unplug from the stresses of “the real world.” With its high density of glacial lakes, the Sawmill Primitive Area offers two marked canoe portage routes as well as a primitive campground. Located just six miles north of Birchwood, you’ll feel like you’re a hundred miles away from any town.

If you’re looking for something a bit more filling, stop into Marie’s Hideaway where you’ll find some of the best italian food in Northwest Wisconsin. Two of the crowd favorites are Frankie’s Spaghetti or the mouthwatering Italian Beef. • Dinner: Minong is calling your name - and you’ll be so glad it did! You won’t want to miss stopping into the Longbranch Smokehouse & Grille where you’ll not only find amazing barbeque, but their special Grimble Rings and house-made ginger ale. If you’re in more of a seafood mood, head over to TR Club Northern where you’ll find Charleston Style Crab Cakes, Crab & Shrimp Dip, and even a Seafood Pizza (did we mention they make it in a brick oven?!). DAY 1 • Breakfast: Start your morning off right with breakfast at The Roost of Sarona. What’s good here? Well, just about everything, but a couple of local favorites are the Tenderloin Hash and the Katty Cake, a supersized pancake which is best served with chocolate chips. • After your stop at The Roost, head over to Perlick Distillery where you’ll find a century-old, family farm serving up some incredibly tasty drink specials. The Perlick Farm has been in the family for five generations. The distillery produces fine spirits distilled from grains grown right on site. • Lunch: Long Lake offers some great dining options for lunch. If you’re looking for a large menu with great offerings, check on The Landing on Long Lake. A few of the delicious options you will find on the menu are The Landing Burger which is thick cold smoked bacon, Monterey beer cheese sauce, onion rings, and topped with smokey BBQ sauce or a Shrimp Po’Boy, a pile of nachos, or even delicious Walleye. • Dinner: End your day with a visit to another farm with lots to offer, Pine Brook Farm that is! If you’re looking for a great farm to table option, this is the place. “The Pork” comes from Chickadee Hills Homestead, located about two miles down the road. A rather unique menu item that Pine Brook offers is “The Tatanka”, for those of you that don’t know, that means bison. Even the bison is raised locally! North Star Bison is located just south of Spooner in the Haugen area. DAY 2 • Begin your morning in beautiful Birchwood, Wisconsin where you’ll find The Birchwood Cafe. You won’t want to miss out on their “Almost” World Famous Hashbrowns. If you’re a sausage gravy fan, you’ll want to try Bubba’s Hashbrowns, which are topped with their homemade gravy recipe. • The Shell Lake area offers some great lunch options. Grab a bite at The 715 Food & Spirits, enjoy lunch overlooking Shell Lake at Lakeview Bar & Grill, or grab a bite at The Potter’s Shed cafe if you’re looking for lunch and a cup of amazing coffee. • Visit the only travel green, certified organic winery in the midwest, Clover Meadow Winery. Clover Meadow serves up a variety of wines as well as spirits from the White Wolf Distillery, also located on site. This winery is located in the beautiful north woods of Wisconsin and creates their own energy.
