Located between Trego and Hayward, Earl & Springbrook are great destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. Paddlers and floaters alike will be drawn to the area as the Namekagon River, part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, flows through both communities. Tubes, canoes, and kayak rentals, as well as shuttle services, are available in Springbrook.

Rentals and shuttle service are available in Trego. In addition to the water fun, Trego is in the heart of the vast ATV and snowmobile trail system. Riders have access to everything in Trego, including trails that connect to hundreds of miles of state-funded, groomed trails. K

Sarona is home to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, a 600-acre nature reserve, with over 13 miles of hiking trails, including the famous “Bog Trail”. Hunt Hill offers nature programming for the whole family and provides the perfect location to explore the beautiful wildlife habitats of Northwest Wisconsin. Arts: Northwoods Style Our scenery isn’t the only beautiful thing you’ll find in Washburn County. Everywhere you turn in the area, you’ll find incredible art in the form of mosaics, wood carvings, pottery, jewelry, and so much more. As you travel gallery to gallery, you’ll find a remarkable amount of talented artists who call the north woods their home. As you wander around the beautiful lakefront community of Shell Lake, you’ll want to take a look at the stunning mosaics throughout town. The mosaics are the creative masterpiece of local artist, Mary Dosch, and many students and community members. Each mosaic depicts different things that the Shell Lake area offers from nature scenes to the Shell Lake beach. Mosaics can be found at the Shell Lake Post Office, Shell Lake Public Library and City Hall, Shell Lake Public School, Shell Lake Arts Center and the Shell Lake Lakefront Information Kiosk. A brochure is available at the visitor center in Spooner to guide you on your tour.

Sometimes art is even more fun when you get to take it home. Luckily for you, we have many great galleries throughout the county where you can do just that. From Barronett to Spooner and many great stops off the beaten path, you’ll find galleries featuring dozens of local artists. A full list of galleries is available on our website, but you’ll find several throughout the guide as well.

Speaking of galleries, did you know that Washburn County has a gallery where you can make your own art? If you’ve never visited the creative area at The Potter’s Shed in Shell Lake, you’ll definitely want to check it out. Not only do they offer paint-your-own pottery in functional and raku styles, but you can also make your own wooden sign. The best part, you don’t have to be an artist to do it!

F Beaverbrook Wildlife Area & Artesian Well A 1,964 acre wildlife area located southeast of Spooner, Beaver Brook is an excellent area for wildlife enthusiasts to explore. Remnants of old homesteads and a logging camp built in 1870 are still visible at the mouth of Beaver Brook. An artesian well is located north of County B (between 53 and 253) and provides excellent drinking water.

11 Things your Kids will
LOVE in the Northwoods That’s right, we couldn’t stop at just ten things for you and your kids to enjoy in Washburn County. We finally narrowed it down to eleven great ways to enjoy some family time.

Grab some sunscreen and a tube to spend the day floating the Namekagon River. The most popular stretch of river to tube is the Earl to Trego stretch. Before you go, head to the Namekagon River Visitor Center to hear about the wildlife you may see along the river. They have some really cool displays including a full-sized replica sturgeon and a diorama featuring the animals of the Namekagon.
Speaking of bluebirds, if you want to venture out on your own with your loved ones, be sure to stop by the visitor center and pick up a birding backpack. The backpacks are free to borrow and include binoculars and bird books to identify all of the feathered friends you see along your hike.

Zoooooom. Head to Bulik’s Amusement Center in Spooner for some good old fashioned go-karting fun. Challenge each other to a race, then head over for a round of mini golf or take a few swings in one of the batting cages.

Take a wander through downtown Spooner and you might just stumble upon a number of tiny doors that seem to have something magical about them. As it turns out, the fairies have taken up residence in town and there sure are a lot of them! Maps are also available at the visitor center to find all of the fairy doors of Spooner!

As you’re enjoying all of the fun things to do in Washburn County, be sure to take along the Kids Scavenger Hunt brochure. Check off the great things you’re doing in the area and bring it back to the visitor center where the kids can claim their awesome prize.

Especially on a rainy day, you’ll want to head over to Jack Link’s Aquatic & Activity Center in Minong. Built in 2017, the facility offers day passes for their swimming pool which includes a stateof-the-art play structure. While you’re in town, be sure to also check out the Minong Center for the activities and events they have planned.

If you’re looking for one of the sandiest beaches in northern Wisconsin, look no further than Shell Lake Beach. The sparkling water and sandy shores of Shell Lake aren’t the only reason that spending a day at the beach is so great. There are also a few ice cream shops within walking distance. A day at the beach just wouldn’t be complete without an ice cream cone!
If you’re looking for more great ideas to do with your family, be sure to head to our blog page on our website and keep an eye out for Ainsley’s blog. Ainsley is a curious and happy six-year old who loves what Washburn County has to offer her creative and growing mind. She also loves the different recreational and outdoor activities that can be done in the area because, “exercise makes you healthy! ”

For the bigger kids, there’s no better way to explore the forests of Washburn County than by taking a horseback ride at the local riding stable. Riders are paired with well-trained horses for a leisurely trail ride.

Enjoy a hands-on art experience with your kids in the Creative Zone at the Potter’s Shed in Shell Lake. Choose from a variety of pottery items ranging from dinosaurs to piggy banks and show off your best painting skills. Pottery is fired and available within 48 hours for pick up.

When the train whistle blows, you know what that means; time to take a ride on the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad! The sightseeing and family pizza train rides are great options for a family outing. Check out the schedule for a full list of train rides and times. With over 600 acres and 13 miles of trails to explore, Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary is the perfect place to spend a day or even a week. Be sure to check the events calendar to find out what Hunt Hill programs are coming up during your stay in the area. A northern tributary to the St. Croix River, the Namekagon is a 95-mile long river protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Most of the Namekagon is undeveloped, offering a genuine wilderness experience to kayak/canoe/tube enthusiasts. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons, while overhead, eagle and osprey can often be seen. It is classified as a Class I-II rapids. Primitive campsites are numerous along the Namekagon, many of which can only be accessed from the water. Stop into the Namekagon Visitor Center, operated by the National Park Service, to learn more about this true treasure.

Hearing the train whistle blow and seeing the puff of smoke roll by, you know you’re getting the full northwoods experience when the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad sightseeing excursion starts chugging down the track. As you venture through the backwoods of Washburn County toward the Namekagon River, the bright yellows and fiery reds will be exploding out your window. We’re certain it will have you peering out the whole time.

So maybe you want to venture out on your own...well let us give you a little direction. Since there are many country roads that could take you off the beaten path, Washburn County has created a Fall Color Routes brochure for you to use as a guide - unless of course you want to get a little lost. Pick which part of the county you want to venture through and let the route lead the way. The routes range anywhere from 39 to 61 miles weaving through Northwest Wisconsin forests, around the beautiful lakes, and through some great small towns.

If rolling down the windows of the car or putting the top down isn’t enough to give you the full outdoor fall experience then hop on your ATV (or rent one!) and follow the ATV Scenic Tour. This Washburn County specialty map was created to highlight points of interest to riders along the 100 miles of ATV trails. From natural to historical and man-made sights, you will see lots of Washburn County’s beauty and hidden gems.

As you will quickly notice in the northwoods, there’s plentiful wildlife to admire. With over 100 miles of hiking trails you will be sure to see some feathered or furry critters scurrying around. Washburn County is even home to National Park trails that roam along the Namekagon River. If you are heading toward the southern part of the county, Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary is a must-stop destination. Their 600 acres house over 13 miles of hiking trails, including the famous bog trail.

For the trail enthusiasts, get out the snowshoes, cross country skis, and even the fat bikes. Here in Washburn County there are 70 miles of expertly groomed trails. You will find yourself winding deep into the backwoods and the views of wildlife and natural scenery will leave you blown away. So maybe biking, skiing, and snowshoeing isn’t for you… There are hundreds of miles of expertly groomed snowmobile trails just waiting for you to get out riding. The trails are well marked and offer easy access to lodging, gas and restaurants. The trails are welcoming for riders of all experience levels; rentals and guided tours are even available for those new to the sport.

For the indoorsy folks, Washburn County is home to many specialty shops that keep their doors open year round. Wander down the cozy main streets and find your own hidden treasures to take home with you. If you love to see history preserved, look up while in downtown Spooner; over a dozen of the downtown businesses have exposed their original tin ceilings. Pick up a brochure at the Washburn County Visitor Center to read about the history of each building.

Washburn County is home to nearly 1,000 lakes and some of the best water recreation available. The pristine lakes offer many species of fish including panfish, bass, northern pike, trout, walleye, and even the famous musky.
Fishing is a popular pastime throughout the year. Fishing opener kicks off the first Saturday in May and excellent fishing continues through the summer and fall. TRAILS: Silent Sports enthusiasts will find a peaceful scenic trail in the Birchwood Area to pursue their outdoor experience. Great options for hiking start in Birchwood with the Ice Age trail. Any season you can enjoy the trails south of Birchwood at Murphy Flowage or the Green Lake/Lil Sis trails between Birchwood and Edgewater. The Birchwood School Forest has a trail system that is tracked in the winter for x-country skiing. Low use country roads are an option for miles of biking.
GOLF: Enjoy a great round of 18 holes at one of the many courses in the area. RESTAURANTS: Birchwood has many fine restaurants with a wide variety of cuisine.
THE TUSCOBIA TRAIL: The famed Tuscobia Trail runs through Birchwood. The network of trails in Washburn, Barron, Sawyer and Rusk counties provides hundreds of miles or riding pleasure for snowmobile and ATV enthusiasts.

Washburn County Trout Streams
CLASS I - High quality trout waters that have sufficient natural reproduction to sustain populations of wild trout, at or near carry capacity. Consequently, streams in this category require no stocking of hatchery trout. These streams or stream sections are often small and may contain small or slow-growing trout, especially in the headwaters. There are 5,400 miles of Class 1 trout streams in Wisconsin and they comprise 41% of Wisconsin's total trout stream mileage.
CLASS II - Streams in this classification may have some natural reproduction, but not enough to utilize available food and space. Therefore, stocking is required to maintain a desirable sport fishery. These streams have good survival and carryover of adult trout, often producing some fish larger than average size. There are 5,911.6 miles of Class 2 trout streams in Wisconsin and they comprise 45% of Wisconsin's total trout stream mileage.

Washburn County has two primitive canoe/kayak routes in the Birchwood area, six miles north of Birchwood. Both routes are in a primitive area with little to no development and provide a unique opportunity for a quiet, back country experience. Many refer to this area as their “mini boundary waters� due to the amount of glacial lakes and the solitude that they find when exploring this little-known gem. The canoe/kayak route areas lie within heavily forested, rolling topography with a high density of small glacial lakes. These lakes are land locked deep soft water lakes with steep banks and wooded shores. Bass and Panfish are abundant. A canoe portage and trail system has been marked to guide canoeists. Kayak/Canoe Route: This kayak/canoe route begins at the Sawmill Lake campground. The portage trail accesses 9 separate lakes, with most portages less than 100 yards. The lakes along this route are relatively deep, with maximum depths of up to 40 feet. Bass and Panfish are abundant, however many of these lakes are prone to winterkill. Of particular interest is the presence of Green Sunfish.
Loyhead Lake Primitive Canoe/Kayak Route: This canoe/kayak route is located 7 miles north of Birchwood. The route begins at Loyhead Lake at the boat landing on the Birchwood Fire Lane. The portage trail accesses 7 separate lakes with most portages less than 200 yards.

Antiques, Art & Local Treasures Abound in Washburn County
While there’s plenty of fun to be had on the lakes in Washburn County, you won’t want to miss hitting the many unique shops throughout the area. If antiques are what you are looking for, you’ll want to check out the 3,000 square foot antique shop in Shell Lake. Scattered throughout the county, you’ll find several antique shops including a variety in downtown Spooner, a big, red barn on the north end of Spooner and a historic schoolhouse in Earl, all full of great treasures. While you’re out on your antique treasure hunt, you’ll want to pop in to some of the many art galleries as well. From glasswork to woodworking, you’ll find some great galleries along Highway 63 stretching from Barronett to Spooner. Along your path, you’ll find many stores offering a variety of local treasures as well. If you’re looking for anything cranberry, Stone Lake is a great stop to find cranberry goodies. Many of the downtown stores offer a variety of local honey, wild rice, baked goods, maple syrup and so much more. Of special interest as you shop in downtown Spooner, be sure to look up when you walk in the stores! Why? Many of the businesses located in the downtown area have refurbished the original tin ceilings and they are a sight to see. In addition to the great shopping, you’ll also find many stops on your trip to enjoy a glass of wine, a steaming espresso or indulge in hand scooped ice cream.

The Music Scene is
Alive in the Northwoods From open mic night at a coffee shop to a small town festival with incredible talent, you’re going to be thrilled with the musical offerings in Washburn County. Our calendar of events is constantly being updated to include new concerts. Take a look at the calendar and you’re bound to find a “Music at the…” series. Sometimes it’s a park or patio, other times it’s a farm, and frequently it’s at The Shed. So, what is The Shed, you ask? It’s The Potter’s Shed in Shell Lake. They offer a variety of musicians in their incredible outdoor garden stage area every Friday night in the summer and various dates throughout the year.

Showcase your talent whether it be at a quaint coffee shop in downtown Spooner or a popular restaurant hidden off the beaten path, all of the venues welcome artists with open arms.
Washburn County is home to the longest continuous running jazz camp in the United States, the Shell Lake Arts Center. The Arts Center brings in musical faculty and students from all over the country to teach and perform in our area. A wide variety of concerts are held throughout the year at the Shell Lake Pavilion overlooking the lake and at the Aderman Auditorium. Concerts include big band, show choir, jazz, and many more.
