MINONG - If you’re looking for a secluded Northwoods vacation, be sure to check out the Minong area. Well-known for its vast ATV and snowmobile trail systems, the area offers access to lodging, dining and gas directly from the trails. Minong also offers many fishing opportunities in the area lakes, including a Kids’ Fishing Pond on the east end of town. Home of the Jack Link’s Aquatic & Activity Center, there’s always something fun happening in Minong!
SHELL LAKE - Imagine a downtown with a sparkling 2,600-acre lake, public beach, park, bandshell, and campground and you have the gorgeous town of Shell Lake. Now add a historical museum, art gallery, live music and a community theatre, all making Shell Lake the perfect small town to spend time with loved ones taking in the arts and enjoying the beautiful surroundings.

LONG LAKE - Long Lake, which stretches 19 miles and reaches depths of over 70 feet, is known as the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin. Several resorts, bait shops, and restaurants make this a great lake for planning your family’s Northwoods vacation. The clear, spring-fed water keeps visitors coming back to Long Lake year after year, generation after generation.
SARONA - Sarona is home to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, a 600-acre nature preserve, with over 13 miles of hiking trails, including the famous “Bog Trail”. Hunt Hill offers nature programming for the whole family and provides the perfect location to explore the beautiful wildlife habitats of Northwest Wisconsin. Sarona also offers excellent golfing, miles upon miles of ATV trails, and wonderful fishing opportunities.

EARL & SPRINGBROOK - Located between Trego and Hayward, Earl & Springbrook are great destinations for outdoor enthusiasts. Paddlers and floaters alike will be drawn to the area as the Namekagon River, part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, flows through both communities. Tubes, canoes, and kayak rentals, as well as shuttle services, are available.

BIRCHWOOD - On a sunny, summer day, surrounded by some of the best fishing in Northwest Wisconsin, it is easy to see why Birchwood is known as the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin. In addition to the fishing opportunities, Birchwood is also well-known for their vast ATV and snowmobile trail systems. Easy trail access to lodging, dining and gas make Birchwood a great entry point for exploring the area trails.

TREGO - Flowing through town, the Namekagon River (part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway) provides 252 miles of tubing, canoeing, and kayaking fun. Rentals and shuttle service are available in Trego. In addition to the water fun, Trego is in the heart of the vast ATV and snowmobile trail system. Riders have access to everything in Trego, including trails that connect to hundreds of miles of state-funded, groomed trails.

Washburn County is home to approximately 45 of the nearly 100 miles of the Namekagon River: Wisconsin’s Moving National Park. With nearly half of the Namekagon flowing through Washburn County, it's no wonder why the area is a popular stop for folks visiting this little known national park. A northern tributary to the St. Croix River, the Namekagon is a 95-mile long river protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The Washburn County stretch of river begins between Hayward Landing and West River Landing and continues through Trego to Fritz Landing. Most of the Namekagon is undeveloped, offering a genuine wilderness experience to kayak, canoe, tube, or fish. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons, while overhead, eagle and osprey can often be seen. The river is classified as Class I-II rapids.

For those who want to get out on a trail and just enjoy the peace and serenity of the northwoods, there are over 100 miles of hiking trails throughout Washburn County. Family Fun activities
we’re sure that everyone will love! Take it from the ones who have littles… we have figured out some of the best ways to enjoy an afternoon while you’re in Washburn County. There’s a lot of fun to choose from, so here are just a few of the many great things families are sure to love!
1.
Grab your sunscreen & arm floaties and head over to Shell Lake Beach. The sparkling water and sandy shores of Shell Lake are the perfect place to splash and play. Not to mention, there are a few ice cream shops right across the street and who doesn’t love ice cream?
2.
Speaking of ice cream, let us give you a little inside tip on where you can find ice cream shops around the county. If you’re in Spooner, The Dock Coffee or the Treat Depot are yummy options. Jack’s Canoe in Trego serves West’s Dairy (of Hayward) ice cream. Minong has the classic A&W but don’t forget about The Scoop on Main Street. Long Lake is lucky to have The Hive serving up a bunch of local favorites right off of the lakeshore. If you’re down in Birchwood, check out Ed’s Pit Stop and in Stone Lake head over to The Last Frontier. And, Shell Lake has the Scoop N Brew, Matt’s Ice Cream Truck, and you’ll even find some flavors at The Potter’s Shed.

If you’re stopping in for ice cream at The Potter’s Shed, you might as well stay for the fairy door hunting or the creative zone. When hunting for the fairy doors, you will get to wander through the beautiful garden area searching high and low! Or, if it’s more of the hands on fun you’re looking for, choose a piece of pottery, anything from a dinosaur to piggy banks or coffee mugs, and let your creative juices flow. Your pottery will be fired and ready for pick up within 48 hours.

We all know that sometimes you just have to let them run and get out those wiggles, so why not head to one of the beautiful hiking trails? Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary is the perfect place to spend a day or even a week. This 600 acre nature preserve has 13 miles of trails to explore. Be sure to check the events calendar to find out what Hunt Hill programs are coming up. They offer a variety of programming including a summer solstice canoe paddle, cakes at the lake, bluebird hike and so many more!

If you’re outdoors, picnics are always fun and we know just the spot (or spots) that you can adventure to. There are over 40 riverside campsites that you can boat into along the Namekagon River: Wisconsin’s Moving National Park that would make a great place to go for an unplugged, nature loving kind of picnic. In fact, why not make it an overnight camping experience? There are multiple outfitters in Washburn County that can help you get on the river.

For the bigger kids, there’s no better way to explore the forests of Washburn County than by taking a horseback ride at the local riding stable – Hoofbeat Ridge Ranch. Riders are paired with well-trained horses for a leisurely trail ride.

Zoom around in the beautiful weather by heading to Bulik’s Amusement Center in Spooner for some good old fashioned go-karting fun. After you’ve finished your laps on the track, enjoy a round of mini golf or take a few swings in the batting cages.
As we all know, the weather can be a bit unpredictable, but there’s plenty of indoor fun to be had. You can take the whole family aboard the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad for a train ride. During the summer months you can enjoy the family pizza train or make your reservations to hop on board when the snow starts to fly so you can visit with Santa.

Splash and play your days away with more indoor fun at the Jack Link’s Aquatic & Activity Center. The pool has lap lanes, a play structure with slides and water fun, and a swimming area with a basketball hoop.

A vacation wouldn’t be complete without finding some souvenirs, right?! You might find yourself shopping in downtown Spooner and the kiddos are losing interest, but not for long… send them on a fairy door hunt! Many of the downtown Spooner shops are home to intricate, little fairy doors, all unique to the shop they are at. If you’re looking for a map to make the hunt a little easier you can stop by the Washburn County Information Center; you could even do a little souvenir shopping while you’re there.

Washburn County is home to nearly 1,000 lakes and some of the best water recreation available. The pristine lakes offer many species of fish including panfish, bass, northern pike, trout, walleye, and even the famous musky.
FISHING is a popular pastime throughout the year. Fishing opener kicks off the first Saturday in May and excellent fishing continues through the summer and fall. If you love ice fishing, some of the best fishing can be found in the winter months. Guide services, bait shops, public access, fishing piers, boat rentals, and incredible lodging and dining make Washburn County the perfect fishing destination. WATER SPORTS are a great way to enjoy the clear waters of Washburn County. Whether you are trying your hand at stand up paddle-boarding, hitting the water on a jet ski, or being pulled on a tube or skis, you will find plenty of water fun on the many area lakes. Please help us keep our waters clean! Washburn County boaters are required to use a decontamination station, if available at a landing, to clean off their boat, trailer and equipment. This measure helps prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other potentially invasive species which have been found in Northwest Wisconsin lakes. We recently renovated all six of our housekeeping cabins
to beautiful rustic cottages with 1, 2 & 3 bedrooms! The cabins now have air conditioning and include TVs receiving broadcasts of all the new digital channels! WASHBURN COUNTY TROUT STREAMS
CLASS I - High quality trout waters that have sufficient natural reproduction to sustain populations of wild trout, at or near carry capacity. Consequently, streams in this category require no stocking of hatchery trout. These streams or stream sections are often small and may contain small or slow-growing trout, especially in the headwaters. There are 5,400 miles of Class 1 trout streams in Wisconsin and they comprise 41% of Wisconsin's total trout stream mileage.
CLASS II - Streams in this classification may have some natural reproduction, but not enough to utilize available food and space. Therefore, stocking is required to maintain a desirable sport fishery. These streams have good survival and carryover of adult trout, often producing some fish larger than average size. There are 5,911.6 miles of Class 2 trout streams in Wisconsin and they comprise 45% of Wisconsin's total trout stream mileage.

SAWMILL PARK PRIMITIVE AREA
BIRCHWOOD AREA CANOE ROUTES Washburn County has two primitive canoe/kayak routes in the Birchwood area, six miles north of Birchwood. Both routes are in a primitive area with little to no development and provide a unique opportunity for a quiet, back country experience. Many refer to this area as their “mini boundary waters� due to the amount of glacial lakes and the solitude that they find when exploring this little-known gem. The canoe/kayak route areas lie within heavily forested, rolling topography with a high density of small glacial lakes. These lakes are land locked deep soft water lakes with steep banks and wooded shores. Bass and Panfish are abundant. A canoe portage and trail system has been marked to guide canoeists.

Sawmill Lake Primitive Kayak/Canoe Route: This kayak/canoe route begins at the Sawmill Lake campground. The portage trail accesses 9 separate lakes, with most portages less than 100 yards. The lakes along this route are relatively deep, with maximum depths of up to 40 feet. Bass and Panfish are abundant, however many of these lakes are prone to winterkill. Of particular interest is the presence of Green Sunfish.
Loyhead Lake Primitive Canoe/Kayak Route: This canoe/kayak route is located 7 miles north of Birchwood. The route begins at Loyhead Lake at the boat landing on the Birchwood Fire Lane. The portage trail accesses 7 separate lakes with most portages less than 200 yards.

While there’s plenty of fun to be had on the lakes in Washburn County, you won’t want to miss hitting the many unique shops throughout the area. If antiques are what you are looking for, you’ll want to check out the 3,000 square foot antique shop in Shell Lake. Scattered throughout the county, you’ll find several antique shops including a variety in downtown Spooner, a big red barn on the north end of Spooner and a historic schoolhouse in Earl, all full of great treasures. While you’re out on your antique treasure hunt, you’ll want to pop in to some of the many art galleries as well. From glasswork to woodworking, you’ll find some great galleries along Highway 63 stretching from Barronett to Spooner. You know this art stop will be good when even the outside of the building is a work of art. This art gallery is home to over 100 artists and Spooner Creek Designs, a wholesale art manufacturer. Not only is the gallery a must-see, but a stop in their garden is also a treat to wander around...be sure to pick up a map to find all of the hidden fairy doors! Speaking of treats, inside the other building is the cafe which has a special twist; in the back, there’s a creative zone where you can paint your own pottery or create your own wood sign. EXTRAS
At the corner of Walnut and River Street in Spooner stands a mural where for more than 80 years a two-story wooden building stood which was built in 1892. The mural depicts the Corner Tavern and many of the area’s earlier residents. This well-known Spooner attraction in its day gained notoriety due to one of the owners, Aggie, commonly refered to as “that redhead.” Aggie had flaming red hair, bright make-up and a flamboyant style of dressing. Aggie was remembered by her family as a quiet woman who firmly commanded her customers’ respect and didn’t allow any bad language in her tavern.
Downtown Spooner Galleries As you wander Spooner’s downtown area, you’ll find several art galleries including Gypsy and the Frog, Purple Pelican Gallery and the Arts in Hand Gallery, just to name a few. Arts in Hand is a showplace for member artists from 13 counties in Northwest Wisconsin. They offer art from over 20 local artists including paintings, weavings, glass, purses, yarn and much more! While you’re shopping, be sure to look up as you walk through the downtown shops. Many of the businesses have exposed the building’s original tin ceiling and they are truly a work of art! ART & CRAFT FAIRS
You can’t get much closer to great art than at one of the local arts & craft fairs. What’s so great about an art fair? Not only do you get to look at and purchase amazing pieces, but likely you’ll be able to meet the artists themselves and learn about how the piece was made. It seems like a piece has so much more meaning when you have met the artist who created it. Some of the more popular art & craft fairs in the area are the Shell Lake Fine Arts Fair, the arts & craft fair at Jack Pine Savage Days, and the Stone Lake Cranberry Festival. Birding in Washburn County With its diverse lands and waters, Washburn County is home to an assorted population of birds, both migrant and resident. This makes every season in Washburn County an adventure for birding! While a lot of bird species leave Washburn County once the snow flies, visitors can still enjoy birding by observing the hearty Chickadee who is a yearround resident, listen for the hoots of a Barred Owl, or join the masses who go in search of rogue Snowy Owls who occasionally make their way South when the winters get long. Once spring arrives, Washburn County becomes a pathway for a variety of migrants. Some of the species to watch for include: the Eastern Bluebird, Common Loon, and Osprey. When summer finally arrives, the woods, waters, and open lands are bustling with colorful species like the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Indigo Bunting, Scarlet Tanager and a large variety of warblers. During the fall, it is nearly impossible to miss the sight of a Wild Turkey, migrating Sandhill Cranes or observe flocks of Dark-Eyed Juncos gathered on the ground around a bird feeder. Birding can be done anywhere, but a few notable places in Washburn County to observe birds include: • Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, in Sarona, where visitors can explore 13 miles of trails around glacial lakes and through meadow, forest, bogs, and marsh. Notable species at Hunt Hill include the Golden-Winged Warbler and the 20-house Bluebird trail. • Namekagon Barrens, in Minong, is a globally significant property composed of pine/oak barrens. The Sharp-tailed grouse, a native prairie bird, is found only in isolated areas of the state including the Barrens. Get up before dawn and head to the Barrens in the spring for a chance to observe the entertaining mating dances of the Sharp-tail. • Trego Nature Trail, in Trego, is a 3.5 mile trail that wanders through forest habitat and along the Namekagon River, a National Wild and Scenic River. This trail offers opportunities to hone your birding by ear skills as many of our forest birds are heard more than seen. • Other great locations for Birding: Stone Lake Wetland Park, Beaver Brook, and the Ice Age Trail Birding is a great activity for all ages and abilities.
