STONE LAKE

CranberryFestival

When the first Saturday of October rolls around, it’s time to make your way to the charming community of Stone Lake to celebrate Wisconsin’s official fruitthe cranberry! This festival has celebrated the seasonal cranberry harvest for over 40 years. It started as a small group of Stone Lake ladies getting together to have a craft fair & sell locally harvested berries. Now you will find nearly 300 vendors along the streets of Stone Lake selling a variety of homemade items, antique-type treasures, and so much more. The day also includes a good ole fashion pancake breakfast at the fire hall, a krate box derby & parade down the "big hill" (if you have been to Stone Lake, you know exactly where it is). Mark your calendar for the first Saturday of October so you don't miss out on one of Washburn County's largest events.

Spooner TIN CEILINGS

Downtown Spooner is home to some incredible architecture and history. While visiting, you’ll find seventeen buildings with their original tin ceilings from the early 1900’s. Tin ceilings became a popular trend in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Businesses used them as an inexpensive substitute for the more laborintensive fancy plaster option. The tin was also a fire barrier between the first and second floor apartments. At one time there were about 45 companies in America making tin ceiling tiles, however the tiles became obsolete during the depression. Unless otherwise noted, most of the two story brick buildings in Spooner were built in either late 1904 or 1905 after a fire in the summer of 1904 destroyed most of the business buildings on the south east side of Walnut Street. You can follow along on this tour of the Spooner Tin Ceilings. Be sure to pick up a brochure from the Visitor Center in Spooner for this self guided tour.

WISCONSIN’S MOVING NATIONAL PARK

Flowing through the heart of Washburn County you’ll find the Namekagon River. A true treasureone that seeps into your soul just minutes into your journey. While it isn’t far off the beaten path, there’s something about spending time on the Namekagon that simply can’t be replicated.

Washburn County is home to approximately 45 miles of this nearly 100 mile long waterway. With almost half of the river located in the county, it’s no wonder the Namekagon was awarded “Top Attraction” in the Best of WashCo.

A northern tributary of the St. Croix, the Namekagon is protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The Washburn County stretch of river begins between Hayward Landing and West River Landing and continues through Trego to Fritz Landing. Most of the Namekagon is undeveloped, offering a genuine wilderness experience to kayak, canoe, tube, or fish. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons, while overhead, eagle and osprey can often be seen. The river is classified as Class I-II rapids.

Washburn County offers six outfitters, over 30 river-access campsites, and several resorts & campgrounds along the river.

While in the area, stop into the Washburn County Visitor Center for:

• Namekagon River trip planning assistance

Hiking at Hunt Hill: Looking to immerse yourself in some gorgeous northwoods scenery? Look no further than Hunt Hill where you’ll find seven miles of trails where dogs are welcome on a leash. Your pup will love exploring this 600 acre nature preserve!

Spooner Dog Park: This is such a treasure of a dog park. Located just north of Railroad Park, along the Wild Rivers State Trail, this dog park offers the opportunity for you to let them off the leash to play a bit. There are play structures and even a little plastic pool you can fill up for them to cool off a bit.

Swimming: If your pup loves to make a splash, there are plenty of boat landings throughout the county where they can cool off in the water. Most public beaches don’t allow dogs on the beach, but there typically aren’t any restrictions at the “Class B” boat landings unless otherwise noted.

Pontoon-ing!: Does your pooch love to feel the wind in their hair? There’s no better way to explore the Washburn County lakes than on a pontoon ride. It’ll be like sticking their head out the car window on a beautiful day.

Canoeing at Sawmill: If your dog is just as much of an adventurer as you, be sure to grab your canoe and head to Sawmill Park. There you’ll find two canoe portage trails that follow some incredible glacial lakes. The primitive campground offers lots of room for you and your pup to play and enjoy the great outdoors.

Camping: What better way to spend the weekend than camping with your dog? There are many great public and private campgrounds, most of which welcome well-behaved dogs, on a leash. Spend the night under the stars along one of Washburn County’s beautiful lakes or rivers and you’ll be glad you brought your four legged friend to take in the sites with you.

SUP Ride: Feeling adventurous? If you have a little calmer dog, why not try introducing them to riding on your stand-up paddleboard with you? It can be a super fun way to explore the lakes and spend some quality time with your dog.

Spooner City Park: A trail near Spooner’s downtown worth exploring is Spooner City Park where you’ll find about a mile paved trail which connects to miles of other wooded hiking trails. There is also a playground for the kids and picnic pavilion. Dogs are welcome on a leash.
