BIRCHWOOD | DiscoverBirchwood.com

On a sunny, summer day, surrounded by some of the best fishing in Northwest Wisconsin, it is easy to see why Birchwood is known as the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin. First stop? Take a picture with the giant bluegill at the edge of town, of course! The area offers endless fishing opportunities. A local favorite for fishing, canoeing or just a day of exploring is the Sawmill Park area just to the north of Birchwood. The area offers a high density of glacial lakes, primitive camping and two canoe portage routes. In addition to the fishing opportunities, Birchwood is also well-known for their vast ATV and snowmobile trail systems. Easy trail access to lodging, dining, and gas make Birchwood a great entry point for exploring the area trails.

LONG LAKE | DiscoverLongLake.com Long Lake, which stretches 19 miles and reaches depths of over 70 feet is known as the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin. This pristine lake offers several resorts, bait shops, restaurants, and attractions making this a must visit area in Washburn County. The clear, spring-fed water keeps anglers and visitors coming back to Long Lake year after year, generation after generation. Not far from the lake is the small community of Sarona, home to Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary, a 600-acre nature preserve, with 13 miles of hiking trails, including the famous "Bog Trail" and the "Discovery Trail." The Long Lake and Sarona area also offers excellent golfing, miles upon miles of ATV and snowmobile trails, and incredible fishing opportunities for any season.

MINONG | DiscoverMinong.com

If you’re looking for a secluded Northwoods vacation, you'll be in awe of the forests, lakes, and trails surrounding the Minong area. If you're looking for top notch fishing opportunities, you'll find them on the Minong Flowage as well as hundreds of other smaller bodies of water. If you're an ATV or Snowmobile enthusiast, you'll find some of the best trails in Northwest Wisconsin with access to lodging, dining and gas directly from the trails. Minong also offers great family-friendly activities like the Kids' Fishing Pond located right in town. Don't miss Totogatic Park where you'll find an incredible county campground with a great swimming beach. On a rainy day, you'll want to spend some time at the Jack Link’s Aquatic & Activity Center.

SHELL LAKE | DiscoverShellLake.com Imagine a quaint downtown just a block away from a sparkling lake with a public beach, park, bandshell and campground - that is the beautiful small town of Shell Lake. To add to their mix is a booming arts culture with The Potter's Shed, Brickyard Pottery & Gallery and the longest running jazz camp at Shell Lake Arts Center. While in Shell Lake one could enjoy their one-of-a-kind mosaic tour with stops at the information kiosk near the beach, Shell Lake Public Library, the post office, Shell Lake Arts Center, and Brickyard Pottery, just to name a few of the stops. Sprinkle in their amazing restaurants and it all comes together to give you the perfect community where things are just a little bit slower paced than the big city lifestyle.

SPOONER | DiscoverSpooner.com From the quaint downtown rich with railroad history that paved the way to make Spooner what it is today to one-of-a-kind festivals, events, and attractions and an abundance of recreational opportunities – the town offers a little something for everyone regardless of the season. Calling Spooner ‘home’ is the 68th Annual Spooner Heart of the North Rodeo, the World’s Largest Musky & Walleye Fish Hatchery – Governor Tommy G. Thompson Fish Hatchery and Washburn County’s only brewery – Round Man Brewing Co. The trails, whether you’re a powersport fan and enjoying hitting the ATV or Snowmobile trails or enjoy a little slower pace during a peaceful hike or pedaling through the beautiful northwoods on your mountain bike, Spooner’s trails have got you covered.

STONE LAKE | DiscoverStoneLake.com

Located in both Washburn and Sawyer counties, Stone Lake is a small treasure with a big heart. Stone Lake's unique shops, incredible restaurants and sparkling lakes welcome visitors throughout the year with their Northwoods hospitality. This is especially evident in the fall when Stone Lake hosts their annual Cranberry Festival with marsh tours, arts & craft vendors, krate box derby, parade, and delicious cranberry treats. While Cranberry Festival might be the most popular time of year in Stone Lake, you won't want to miss exploring the beauty of the area lakes year 'round. From its namesake, Stone Lake, located near town, to Big Sissabagama and Sand Lake, both well known by local anglers, there are plenty of fun days on the lake to be had.

We simply can’t think of anything better than a good old fashioned family vacation. You know that feeling when you pull into “the cabin.” It’s a feeling you long for the rest of the year. Maybe you’ve gone there for generations or maybe this is your first time. It really doesn’t matter, the feeling is similar. LAKES

A THOUSAND LAKES

Welcome You

A stunning sunrise over Long Lake. An evening cruise along the shores of Shell Lake. A trophy Northern caught on the Minong Flowage. Washburn County’s nearly 1,000 lakes are calling your name. There’s nothing quite like waking up to the sound of a loon from your cabin or teaching your granddaughter to fish on the lake that your grandpa taught you. It’s the memories of your time at the lake that you take home with you. Here are some fun facts about the waterways of Washburn County:

• Washburn County is home to the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin, Long Lake and the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin, Birchwood. • There are a total of 964 lakes in the county with 30,000 acres of water surface. • Rivers and streams are abundant. There are roughly 700 miles flowing through the county. • Washburn County is home to the Namekagon River: Wisconsin’s Moving National Park. • There are 21 Class I trout streams in the county and another 13 streams classified as Class II and III. • There are two oversized tributes to the fish of Washburn County. You’ll find a giant bluegill as you enter Birchwood and a two-tailed Walleye near the beach at Shell Lake. • The Spooner Fish Hatchery, also known as the Governor Tommy Thompson Fish Hatchery, is the world’s largest hatchery of its kind and raises stock that supplies much of Wisconsin’s lakes.

THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS WE DON’T EVER WANT TO CHANGE. One of those things - our favorite lake. We want it to be as clear as the first time we dipped our toes into that sparkling water. We want the fishing to be as good as we remember it from our childhood. We want to feel good about our kids jumping into the lake feet first. In order for our lakes to be “just how you remember them,” we need your help. Protecting our lakes is up to everyone. Every local. Every visitor. Every person. Here are some tips to help keep our waters clean: • Clean boats. Clean water. Use the decontamination stations and follow all DNR recommendations for keeping Aquatic Invasive Species out of our lakes. • If you brought it to the lake, take it with you when you go. • Keep chemicals away from the water. The lake isn’t a bathtub and shampoos and soaps contain ingredients that can be harmful to the delicate ecosystem. • Make sure your bait is non-toxic and most importantly, lead free. Lead can harm loons, trumpeter swans and other waterfowl. • Go slow near shorelines. Large wakes can cause erosion.

What makes a real FAMILY VACATION? Family vacations are fun. Traveling in the car with the kids yelling “are we there yet”, is worth it when you pull up to your cabin, walk down to the lake and feel the stress of “real life” melt away. Let the fun begin. Burned s’mores, tipped canoes, dad belly flopping off the end of the dock, little Lucy kissing a fish... This. This is how memories are made. Watching the sunset while the kids try to catch frogs together. A peaceful cup of coffee with the sound of a loon on the lake. This is why we vacation in Washburn County. ARTS

THE POTTER’S SHED You know this art stop will be good when even the outside of the

building is a work of art. Enjoy the gallery, live music or even create your own masterpiece in the creative zone.

BRICKYARD GALLERY Brickyard is housed in a historic brick schoolhouse, just south of Shell Lake. This gallery features a variety of art created by the owner and other local artists. The charming schoolhouse and incredible art make this a “must stop”.

SHELL LAKE MOSAICS As you wander around the beautiful lakefront community of Shell Lake, you’ll want to take a look at the stunning murals around town. A mural walk brochure is available.

ART & CRAFT FAIRS You can’t get much closer to great art than at one of the local arts & craft fairs. What’s so great about an art fair? Not only do you get to view and purchase amazing pieces, but likely you’ll be able to meet the artists themselves.

SPOONER MURAL In Spooner stands a mural where for more than 80 years a two-story wooden building stood. The mural depicts the Corner Tavern and the redhead in the front is one of the owners, Aggie, commonly referred to as “that redhead.”

DOWNTOWN SPOONER GALLERIES Several art galleries call downtown Spooner their home. As you’re wandering through the galleries, be sure to look up at the ceiling as many of the original tin ceilings have been exposed and they are truly a work of art!

DINING

Wisconsin THE STATE OF CHEESE.

Also known as the state of Friday Fish Fry, the brandy old fashioned, bloody marys and deep fried goodness. This. This is how food was meant to be. Welcome to Washburn County where we know how to delight even the most distinguished palate. Picture this...you boat up to a courtesy dock and stretch your legs after a long day on the lake. You wander up to a restaurant with a stunning view of the lake. The food comes to the table and you see fresh Walleye the size of your plate. That’s a great start to your trip in Washburn County. This is just one of the amazing culinary experiences you’ll encounter when visiting. From menus with no less than a dozen delicious, deep fried appetizers to craft brews paired with tantalizing specials at the local brewpub, your taste buds will be thoroughly impressed. For dining specials, a Friday Fish Fry Guide, and more: WashburnCounty.org.

THE QUEST FOR THE BEST

Bloody Mary

The quest for the best bloody mary seems to be never ending, not that we mind, really. We asked our locals and visitors “Who, in Washburn County, has the best bloody?” It led us to a very important question. What makes a great bloody mary? Some will argue that in order for the drink to be “the best”, it has to have a mountain of scrumptious food attached to it. Others would contend that the best bloody is simple, but, the recipe is key. Even with the differing opinions as to what truly makes the best bloody, one thing is for certain, we love our bloodies in Washburn County!
