Area Rivers NAMEKAGON RIVER: A northern tributary to the St. Croix River, the Namekagon is a 95-mile long river protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Most of the Namekagon is undeveloped, offering a genuine wilderness experience to kayak/ canoe/tube enthusiasts. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons, while overhead, eagle and osprey can often be seen. It is classified as a Class I-II rapids. Campsites are numerous along the Namekagon, many of which can only be accessed from the water. Stop into the Namekagon Visitor Center, operated by the National Park Service, to learn more about this true treasure.

Enjoy Washburn County’s incredible ATV & Snowmobile Trail System!

TOTOGATIC RIVER: The Totogatic, dedicated in 2009 as a Wild River, is a beautiful, undeveloped river crossing the northern portion of Washburn County. The Totogatic River flows from Bayfield County all the way to Burnett County where it meets up with the Namekagon River, a tributary of the St. Croix River. Most of the river is wild and remote, making this river a beautiful path for canoe and kayak enthusiasts. However, some areas are dangerous and not recommended for paddling, please check with area experts prior to paddling the river.

Over 150 miles of Washburn County’s trail system maintained by Rolling Hills Snowmobile & ATV Club. FOR TRAIL CONDITIONS: www.washburncounty.org/tourism

Remember…Riding the trails is a privilege, not a right!

YELLOW RIVER: The Yellow River was called the “River Juane” by early French explorers because of the bright yellow sand on the bottom of Yellow Lake, through which it flows. There is excellent canoeing/kayaking on the Yellow River as it flows out of Spooner Lake in Washburn County, into Burnett County, where it joins the St. Croix River in Danbury. It offers a slow-to-moderate current and a few gentle rapids. Access to the Yellow River is available at numerous road crossings and public landings. Wildlife, including the White-Tailed deer and numerous varieties of waterfowl, are abundant along its shores.

Help us keep our trails by respecting the land and the other riders you meet along the way.

Play on the trails; work on the trails – New members are encouraged! For more information on Rolling Hills, contact

A Short Drive Woods, water and wildlife – not a dream, but a reality. You need only travel to the southern tip of Douglas County, bordering on Washburn County, to experience what others may only dream of. With miles of well-groomed recreational trails with recreational parking areas, over 100 pristine lakes to fish, swim and boat, and thousands of acres of forest land where visitors may hunt and hike, it is no wonder that people head “up north” to relax! This is UP NORTH at its best. Wascott is a community of volunteers where clubs, organizations and individual citizens work together to get the job done. One such effort is the annual Wascott Area Children’s Christmas Party held at the Town Hall on the afternoon of December 24th. Everyone is welcome to come and join in the excitement which brings out the “child” in all of us. Not here during the winter? Then plan to attend the annual Food and Fun event held at the Wascott Ball Park on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Meet our friendly residents and other visitors for an afternoon of food, drink, prizes, games and camaraderie. You may come as a stranger, but you will leave as a friend. During your stay, stop at any of our area businesses. Members of the Wascott Tourism and Development Association will offer you the finest that there is in food, beverages and lodging. You will be planning your next visit before leaving!
