Washburn County Recreation ATVing: Over 100 miles of ATV trails linking to an ever-growing Northwest Wisconsin ATV Trail system, make Washburn County a premier ATV destination. Multiple loops throughout the county, linking to the Wild Rivers & Tuscobia State Trails, create an ATV experience like no other. Ample ATV parking areas and access to lodging and restaurants make planning an ATV vacation easy. ATV trails open the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and stay open through the winter. Fall is an especially enjoyable time to explore the area trails and take in the breathtaking fall colors. ATV trail conditions are available on our website or by calling 1-800367-3306. See ads pages 9, 18 & 23.
Biking: Whether you are looking for a challenging mountain bike trail or an abandoned railroad grade to spend the afternoon on, Washburn County has a bike trail for you. For mountain bike enthusiasts, be sure to check out the Wildcat Mountain Bike Trail. Road biking is also a popular past time due to the many quiet, country roads in Washburn County. Stop by the information center for a road map and route ideas. Maps of the trails are also available on our website.
Canoeing/Kayaking/Tubing: Washburn County offers many opportunities for kayakers, canoeists and tubers. The Namekagon River is part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway managed by the National Park Service and is excellent for tubing, kayaking and canoeing. Canoeing and kayaking opportunities exist on the Totogatic and Yellow Rivers as well and also on the many lakes in the area. Birchwood offers two unique primitive canoe portage routes in an area with many glacial lakes. Rentals and shuttle service are available. See ads pages 17, 23, 24 & 35 or take a look at the recreational rentals on page 22.
Cross Country Skiing/Snowshoeing: Washburn County is known for its excellent ski trails, but you’ll want to be sure to check them out for yourself! This area boasts over 84km of groomed ski trails ranging in length and difficulty. There are also numerous trails designated for snowshoe enthusiasts. Maps and trail conditions are available on our website. For snowshoe rentals, go to page 22.
Fall Color Tours: Washburn County bursts into brilliant color in September and October, luring visitors and residents alike onto the highways and trails. Along with the spell-binding scenery, you’ll also want to check out the colorful local festivals that celebrate the harvest. While you’re here, be sure to sample our unsurpassed fall produce — the world’s finest cranberries, apples, pumpkins, wild rice and honey. If you’re looking to do a self-guided auto tour to view the colors, stop by the Washburn County Visitor Information Center for information on Rustic Roads, Fall Color brochures and road maps.
Fishing: With nearly 1,000 lakes in Washburn County, you are sure to find the perfect lake to make those fishing stories a reality! Washburn County is home to Birchwood, known as the Bluegill Capital of Wisconsin and Long Lake, known as the Walleye Capital of Wisconsin. Not only are our lakes great for fishing, but our rivers are excellent too! For a list of lakes, public accesses and types of fish you can catch, check out page 30. You can fish for muskies, northern, bass, walleye, bluegill, crappies, panfish and trout on over 30,000 acres of water. If you didn't bring your boat, don't worry! There are many locations in the area that you can rent a boat. A list of boat rentals is available on page 22. See ads pages 3, 18, 23, 31, 35 & 38.
Geocaching: A high-tech treasure hunt, geocaches are hidden outdoors and their coordinates posted online. Anyone can obtain the coordinates, find the hidden containers and share their experiences online. Though there are many different variations of caches, the traditional cache is hidden in plain sight, although some are very cleverly camouflaged. In Washburn County, there are approximately 200 hidden caches to explore. Check out our website for more information.

The road and access plan provides areas for those needing motorized travel to access hunting areas. Be sure to check with the DNR and the Forestry Department prior to hunting. Ice Fishing: As the snow falls and the lakes freeze over, the fishermen take to the frozen water with augers in hand in search of the “big one”. Ice fishing is a very popular activity to break up the long winter months. Winter brings numerous fishing contests for families to enjoy together. If you don’t have your own equipment, there are many sport shops who sell or rent equipment. For a list of sport shops, visit our website or take a look at the Recreational Rentals on page 22.

A 95 mile long river which is a tributary to the St. Croix River and is protected under the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. The Namekagon Visitor Center is operated by the National Park Service. Most of the Namekagon portion of the riverway is entirely undeveloped, offering kayakers/canoeists a genuine wilderness experience. The riverbanks are abundant with deer, muskrat, beaver, turtles and blue herons. Osprey and bald eagles are also seen. Canoeing, kayaking and tubing are great ways to experience the beauty of this scenic river. The river is classified as Class I-II rapids. There are numerous campsites along the river, some of which are only accessible by water.
TOTOGATIC RIVER: The Totogatic, dedicated in 2009 as a Wild River, is a beautiful, undeveloped river crossing the northern portion of Washburn County. The Totogatic River flows from Bayfield County all the way through Burnett County where it meets up with the Namekagon River, a tributary of the St. Croix River. Most of the river is wild and remote, making this river a beautiful path for canoe and kayak enthusiasts. However, some areas are dangerous and not recommended for paddling and you should check with area experts prior to paddling the river.
YELLOW RIVER: The Yellow River was called the “River Juane” by early French explorers because of the bright yellow sand on the bottom of Yellow Lake through which it flows. The Yellow River offers stream and lake canoeing with a slow to moderate current and a few gentle rapids. Access is available at numerous road crossings and public landings. There is excellent fly fishing, canoeing or kayaking on the Yellow River as it flows out of Spooner Lake in Washburn County, through Burnett County, which then meets the St. Croix in Danbury. Wildlife is abundant along the Yellow River; most common is the white-tail deer and numerous varieties of waterfowl.

A Thousand Lakes Are Waiting for You! If you are looking for some great places to take the kids fishing, check out the following list. These are recommendations from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Fish Biologists. Please keep in mind that the locations on this list are merely suggestions; there are many other great places for kids to fish as well.
Minong Kids’ Pond Located at the Minong Ranger Station on Highway 77, on the east side of Minong, WI. The pond is stocked with trout and panfish for kids only. Adults may assist small children. Catch and release is encouraged, but kids may keep a few to eat. Best fishing is in May to early June. Flowage, Northeast of Minong, WI off County Highway I. Panfish, bass, northern pike and carp are most frequent catches. There are picnic, beach & boat landing facilities. Located on the West side of Spooner on the South side of Highway 70 at the Governor Thompson Hatchery grounds. Fish for panfish, trout, bass, northern, walleye and other species from the bank or several fishing piers on the flowage or the river below the dam. Guided hatchery tours are subject to change, please contact the hatchery for tour information. 715-635-4149

A Short Drive Woods, water and wildlife – not a dream, but a reality. You need only travel to the southern tip of Douglas County, bordering on Washburn County, to experience what others may only dream of. With miles of well-groomed recreational trails with recreational parking areas, over 100 pristine lakes to fish, swim and boat, and thousands of acres of forest land where visitors may hunt and hike, it is no wonder that people head “up north” to relax! This is UP NORTH at its best. Wascott is a community of volunteers where clubs, organizations and individual citizens work together to get the job done. One such effort is the annual Wascott Area Children’s Christmas Party held at the Town Hall on the afternoon of December 24th. Everyone is welcome to come and join in the excitement which brings out the “child” in all of us. Not here during the winter? Then plan to attend the annual Food and Fun event held at the Wascott Ball Park from 2:00 to 6:00 pm on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Meet our friendly residents and other visitors for an afternoon of food, drink, prizes, games and camaraderie. You may come as a stranger, but you will leave as a friend. During your stay, stop at any of our area businesses. Members of the Wascott Tourism and Development Association will offer you the finest that there is in food, beverages and lodging. You will be planning your next visit before leaving!
