Participants in the WVCC’s 2015 Operation Clean Sweep beautify Railroad Green.

Every year, the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce sponsors an official roadside cleanup event throughout the entire town of Warwick. Grab your trash bag and join in the fun the weekend of Friday to Sunday, April 29, 30 and May 1, 2016! Operation Clean Sweep Committee Co-Chairs Jean Beattie and Ryan Hansen will coordinate the event along with Michael Johndrow, Executive Director of the Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce and Warwick Valley High School student Julia Vargas.

Various groups, clubs, and individuals take part by pre-registering their routes in order to ensure garbage pickup by DPW. (Please note that this is for roadside refuse, not homeowner garbage.) Please call (845) 986-2720 to register your road in advance, or come in person on Saturday, April 30 from 8-12 to the Caboose at South Street to register your road and enjoy free refreshments. Garbage bags and gloves will be available to anyone who registers and can be picked up at the South Street Caboose at any time.

There are several scheduled programs this year! Kevin Brand from The Computer Guy will be collecting electronic equipment for recycling at his business location, 14 West Street between 9am and 3pm. The Warwick Valley Coalition will be sponsoring an unused prescription pill drop-off in conjunction with the DEA between 10am and 2pm. Used cell phones will be collected for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence from 8am to 12pm.

Also, the Warwick Lions Club will host

old eyeglass and hearing aid collection as well as a shredding truck in the South Street parking lot on Saturday, April 30 between 9am and 12pm. There is a suggested $5 donation per box or bag. Make sure to check the Chamber’s website for updates of Operation Clean Sweep programs closer to the weekend of the event.

What and who is “The Warwick Valley Chamber?”

What is it? The Warwick Valley Chamber of Commerce is a local association that exists to promote and protect the interests of the business community in Warwick. Its ongoing mission is to encourage economic opportunity through business and community leadership and to enhance the social and civic environment of Warwick Valley. Our Chamber has been in existence since 1939 and today is an organization of just under 600 members representing numerous individuals who believe in the importance of creating a sense of community among local businesses. Our members represent just about every industry, large and small, old and new, from the home-based business just starting out to very large businesses with thousands of employees.

The Chamber also promotes and delivers a robust roster of events, programs and initiatives to boost business and economic success. As I’m writing this article, the current temperature is 77 degrees…in the middle of March! (certainly an indicator that our retail stores may have an earlier opportunity to show off new merchandise, and that, of course, is good for all of us). I’ve heard no complaints about the winter weather, not so bad, right?

Mark your calendars—we are proud to sponsor our 9th Annual Community Showcase on Saturday, April 2nd. Always a draw and a big promotion for “shop local”, this event is to be held at the Warwick Valley Middle School. It’s a terrific opportunity for our vendors to have a professional presence on “Main Street” for a day.

Our new member’s luncheon for month of January was at the beautiful club house of Warwick Grove, located at 6 Hudson Street, Warwick. This year Subway celebrates their second year of operation at the Fairgrounds Shopping Center, 148 Route 94 South, Warwick. Michele Schiffrin, owner and manager of the store, is looking forward to a busy spring and summer season. Eat healthy and look for new and exciting menu items to be introduced. Our combined months of February and March luncheon was hosted by G’s Restaurant located at 32 Main Street in Warwick. G’s Restaurant is a family-friendly restaurant. It’s a Key Time to Convert to EMV Chip Technology

It’s time for merchants to move to EMV chip card processing. Many retailers still cannot accommodate EMV chip cards, although the deadline for U.S. merchants to convert to this technology has passed.

Non-compliant retailers are now liable for losses resulting from credit or debit card fraud at point of sale. Consumers need to believe their transactions and personal data are secure, and research shows that 53 percent of consumers prefer to shop with a merchant that accepts chip cards. Remember: if it’s important to consumers, it’s important to your business. Contact your merchant services provider for implementation details. Retirement Plan Vital to Confidence

Retirement confidence is highest among workers with a retirement plan (e.g. 401K, IRA), according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI). Their 2015 Retirement Confidence Survey found those with a retirement plan had more than twice as much confidence in their ability to afford retirement, than those without a plan. Community Active Bank

Recently Greater Hudson Bank hosted a breakfast mixer at the Main Street branch in Warwick which proved to be a well-attended event with a variety of businesses in attendance. Delicious catering was provided by the Tuscan Café.
