It’s been quite a journey! ...but we’re coming back with a bigger and better offer than ever before and with a new mission to bring more people together through arts and culture. We’re frustrated to have been away for so long, especially during a time when finding new ways to connect, create togetherness and build community has been more important than ever before. The arts have always been a source of wisdom, support, connection, understanding, joy and inspiration for each and every one of us. In our ever more fragmented world, we know that the arts are one of the few places we can all meet, a place to share our experiences, a place to find common ground and understanding, a place to connect, to transform and explore new possibilities together. The biggest redevelopment in our history sees your arts centre completely transformed, with a spacious welcoming foyer and three top-of-the-range cinemas. Later in the season our new restaurant will open, and finally, in January 2022 we will complete the project with the opening of the first exhibition in the new Mead Gallery. We hope you’ll enjoy our Autumn season, and look forward to welcoming you back to your arts centre for live arts and entertainment you’ll feel and never forget! CORAL AVENUE Fri 1 - Mon 4 Oct Air Giants presents Coral Avenue, a group of joyful interactive inflatable robots, who will entice you into the new Warwick Arts Centre building. Inspired by undersea life, these creatures move both individually and collectively in response to passers-by. Inspired by the idea of an intelligent life form emerging from beneath the surface of the arts centre and reaching out to communicate, these otherworldly beings will delight and entertain in equal measure in an installation that celebrates life, resilience and togetherness.

BECKETT’S ROOM Sat 4 – Tue 7 Dec 7.30pm The UK premiere of a startlingly innovative production by Dead Centre, the Dublin-based theatre company behind the hit show Hamnet, which visited Warwick Arts Centre in 2018. Beckett’s Room tells the story of the apartment in Paris where Samuel Beckett lived with his partner Suzanne during the Second World War and considers their place within the French Resistance. But it also speaks to us about the millions of other lives across Europe which are changed by conflict. Told without live performers on stage, we hear the characters’ voices through headphones and watch their story unfold as objects miraculously move and dance around the stage. The absence of bodies focuses us more intently on their stories, on the world changing around us, changed by us. This is a biography of a room, and an invitation to bear witness to a world as it disappears. This is sure to be a highlight in the Coventry 2021 UK City of Culture year. It brings to life a series of digitally animated characters and objects inspired by the folklore both of the University of Warwick campus and from our surrounding region. Ancient legends such as Coventry’s elephant and castle and Warwickshire’s bear and ragged staff, meet contemporary icons such as Rolf the campus cat in this alternative reality. As you navigate the experience, you can read the story of each character you meet.

Wed 8 – Thu 9 Dec 7.45pm A journey through the last 20 years of Korean history told by a bunch of talkative rice cookers. One day when his electric rice cooker informed him that his meal was ready, Jaha Koo experienced a deep sense of isolation. ) is an untranslatable Korean word ‘Golibmuwon’ ( expressing the feeling of helpless isolation that characterizes the lives of many young people in Korea today. 20 years ago there was a major economic crisis in South Korea, comparable to the financial crash in the US and Europe in 2008. This crisis had a huge impact on the young generation of South Korea, and artist Jaha Koo witnessed many endemic problems including youth unemployment and socio-economic inequality. In a bittersweet and humorous dialogue, Jaha and his clever rice cookers – hacked and reprogrammed to make them speak – take you on a journey through recent Korean history, combining personal and political with reflections on happiness, economic crises and death. In this spirited evening of cabaret and discussion, The Cocoa Butter Club will ‘decolonise & moisturise’ the stage, redistributing the narrative of bodies of colour, providing agency and autonomy in celebrating our capabilities. The Cocoa Butter Club was born as a protest and challenge to the performing arts landscape. Frustrated with the lack of diversity, cultural appropriation and lack of visibility for people within the Queer Trans Intersex Black People and People of Colour community, they set out to fill a cultural void. Providing a voice for ‘The Other’, The Cocoa Butter Club exists to promote and celebrate the multitude of mediums artists create.

The show is performed directly to each audience member through headphones with original sound and digital design. I Stand For What I Stand On draws on autobiographical experiences, a love of Harry Styles and Abba, an extraordinary understanding of the climate crisis and features cardboard protest signs, sharing the young international casts’ thoughts and fears about the impending climate crisis. I Stand For What I Stand On explores the reality of being a teenager and growing up in the shadow of the climate emergency.

DAWINDER BANSAL’S CURIOUS OBJECTS OF WOMEN’S INDEPENDENCE Warwick Arts Centre has commissioned award-winning artist Dawinder Bansal to make a new exhibition that celebrates the lives, voices and curiosity of the fierce, fabulous and courageous women of Coventry and the ways in which they have attained independence. We are looking for 150 women to be part of a major new exhibition at the Mead Gallery in May 2022 entitled Curious Objects. We want you to tell us about your significant object – why does it mean freedom to you? Is it a bag of groceries that reminds you of living independently and choosing your own meals for the first time? Is it a custom-made wheelchair, an exam result, the hiking boots that took you on your first solo adventure? Or is it something as small as a packet of seeds from which you grew your very first vegetables? Whatever it is, we’d like to hear your story. Get in touch to find out how to get involved. OUT OF WHACK ELDER’S DANCE CLASSES Tue 5 Oct – Tue 7 Dec “I’m not interested in how people move but what moves them…” Pina Bausch Out of Whack is a new opportunity for Coventry residents and aims to challenge the notions of how older people engage creatively with dance by bringing together a company of people over the age of 60 who share a love of contemporary dance and who want to explore different contemporary dance styles. The first of two performances in our 2021-2022 season from the ever-inspiring RPO begins with Franz Liszt’s symphonic poem, Hamlet - a dramatic character study of Shakespeare’s avenging prince. Completing the programme is Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.3, and the second symphony by Finland’s Jean Sibelius, which is audibly influenced by his 1901 Italian trip. The RPO is joined by lauded Hungarian violinist, Barnabás Kelemen, whose numerous accolades include Liszt and Kossuth Prizes and Prima and Gramophone Awards. Anu Tali is at the forefront of an exciting generation of international conductors characterised by an energetic freshness and ingenious creativity. Since cofounding the Nordic Symphony Orchestra in 1997, she has appeared with major orchestras the world over.

Conductor Sergey Smbatyan founded the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra in 2005. From the beginning, the orchestra has been home to bright and energetic musicians, assembled around a shared vision based on the elevatory power of music, and a desire to amplify Armenian culture. Hence the inclusion of renowned Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian’s Masquerade in the programme. Beethoven’s confident and assertive ‘Emperor’ concerto is complemented by Tchaikovsky’s personal Symphony No.4 in an evening that also sees the return to the venue of the ever-popular Freddy Kempf. Freddy is one of today’s most successful pianists, performing to sell-out audiences all over the world.

CAMILLA GEORGE QUARTET Sun 31 Oct 7.45pm MOBO-nominated Camilla George brings her own critically acclaimed band, showcasing stars of the new UK jazz scene. Growing up inspired by the sounds of Fela Kuti, Jackie McLean and Charlie Parker, Camilla’s African roots and Caribbean ancestry shine through in her precise and playful style. She brings together jazz with calypso, afrobeat and hip hop. Dubbed “the golden girl of jazz” by the Evening Standard, Camilla’s debut album, Isang – pronounced ‘e-sang’, meaning journey in Ibibio, her native language – received huge critical acclaim. Her follow up album, The People Could Fly, explores stories which slaves passed onto their children through generations. Bringing together the University of Warwick’s academic researchers with artists and the people of Coventry to answer the question: what does the future of Coventry sound like?
In collaboration with Warwick Arts Centre, the Resonate Festival brings you a two-day festival of ideas, culture, talks and provocations, exploring what freedom means to different people in different contexts.
We’ll be working together to create sound compositions, films and performances, using field recordings of the city and its surroundings.
Don’t miss this mix of high-profile speakers and artists curated by Warwick Arts Centre, alongside contributions from our own academics!
Words & Voices Roadshow Join us for poetry, life stories, language learning, spoken-word performance, writing, and more.
