From Fringe First winner Inua Ellams comes a new story about two foster brothers building a global T-shirt brand. On their journey from a market in Nigeria to a sweatshop in China, Matthew and Muhammed are forced to reconsider what brotherhood means and discover the consequences of success.

Poet and performer Inua Ellams was born in Nigeria in 1984, and moved to the UK as a teenager. He merges visual art, spoken word and theatre, to tell stories encompassing iconic imagery, humour and beauty.

Accompanied by a live sound and light score, the piece is performed for both a human audience and for a bank of silent, all-seeing pinhole cameras. Throughout the performance, from which audiences are free to come and go at any point, images are exposed, developed and displayed, to show glimpses of bodies moving slowly in the light.

Each image bears witness to dances that have already been and gone, durations of time captured in a single image.

Three Cardinals in crimson robes are on a mission, touring a puppet show to tell their history of the world. With scenery but no puppets, they enter the stage themselves to act out a beautiful, naive and unwittingly hilarious journey from Creation, through The Crusades to contemporary Middle Eastern politics and, ultimately, The Apocalypse.

Backstage things are frantic and fractious. The cardinals are assisted by a young Muslim Stage Manager, she is overworked and their scripts aren’t exactly the same. They are all doing the best, but they are only human…

From Stan's Cafe, a visual play about faith and belief, The Cardinals is playful, thought provoking and very funny.

To escape the harsh realities of his imprisonment, Molina fantasises of a world based on movies.

Molina’s refusal to confront reality is suddenly challenged when Valentin, a revolutionary with a focus on the real world, is thrown into the same cell. As the prison walls close in on their hopes, the two must learn to co-exist alongside one another.

Through every one of Molina's fantasy movies, there is one actress who is ever present; Aurora. Despite Molina's admiration for her, there is one role that terrifies him; The Spider Woman, who kills with her kiss, and who Molina believes he sees, stalking the prison.

Warwick Student Arts Festival Sun 24 – Wed 27 Jun One of the largest student arts festivals in Europe, this is an entirely student-run, four day festival of over 100 free events ranging from beat-boxing to Brecht and covering all art forms from theatre to music via film, visual arts and dance. It has been a fantastic staple of Warwick's history since 2004 and this year it’s better than ever!

This year’s festival will include a Community Day to celebrate the talent of the local area, the excitingly revamped Society Awards, as well as a range of artistic events ranging from fun to thought-provoking, right at the heart of the Warwick campus, including large visual arts pieces that everyone can leave their mark on for future years to enjoy.

Human beings are stupid. They always fall foolishly in love, knowing full well that the separation they will no doubt experience will crush them. More moronic than ever, however, they set off madly in search of tenderness.

As the dancers leap with primal urgency, or lie crumpled and defeated on the ground, a narrator leads the audience on a moving journey towards a breathtakingly beautiful and graceful finale.

Award-winning choreographer Dave St-Pierre, branded the ‘enfant terrible’ of his generation, has been a major force on the contemporary dance scene for over five years and has provoked comparisons with Pina Bausch’s theatre of cruelty.

Described by one critic as "truly remarkable and not to be missed"; and by another as "a heap of ordure so ripe you could fertilise your petunias with it", this outrageously funny show has certainly provoked debate.

New Adventures

Matthew Bourne’s Early Adventures Tue 19 & Wed 20 Jun 7.30pm Theatre £18 (£16), £21 (£19), £24 (£22) Under 26s £10 2hrs (two intervals) As part of New Adventures 25th Anniversary celebrations, Britain’s favourite choreographer (Swan Lake, Edward Scissorhands, The Car Man, Nutcracker!) presents a triple bill of acclaimed early works that launched his career.

Spitfire ‘An advertisement divertissement’ was Bourne’s first hit in 1988 and hilariously places the most famous 19th century ballet showstopper in the world of men’s underwear advertising.

Town and Country from 1991, gave Bourne and his company their first Olivier nomination. Remembered as the piece that crystallized the Bourne style; gloriously witty and ironic, but also strangely moving and heartfelt. It explores notions of national character from a bygone era through the evocative music of Edward Elgar and Noël Coward amongst others.

The Infernal Galop was inspired by icons of France in the 30s and 40s. This is France as seen by the uptight English imagination, with all the traditional clichés joyously paraded for our entertainment and climaxing in Offenbach's inevitable Can-Can! “Matthew Bourne has utterly changed the landscape of dance forever.”

Verdi’s enduring work, adapted from La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, tells the tragic story of a young courtesan and her lover, who battle society’s conventions and the morality of the day in an attempt to be together.

Persuaded by others to return to her former Parisian life, Violetta ultimately sacrifices herself for the man she loves. With soaring melodies and high drama, La Traviata remains one of the world’s most popular operatic works.

English Touring Opera English Touring Opera returns to Warwick Arts Centre with a season of two of the most popular operas in the repertoire – Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin (last performed at Warwick Arts Centre in 2007) and a new production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

The ever resourceful barber, Figaro (Cozmin Sime), lends a hand to an ardent young count (tenor Nicholas Sharratt) in his courtship of an intelligent beauty (Kitty Whately, winner of the 2011 Kathleen Ferrier Award) who is being forced to marry her miserly guardian (Andrew Slater).

Eugene Onegin is a powerful, nostalgic opera about youth, and the effect of youthful decisions and feelings. First love, lost love, jealousy and regret are all there – there is no opera more tender, more essential.

Though the weather – and the plotting – gets very stormy indeed, the youthful and cunning prevail; their victory celebrated in music of pure joy, with ETO’s acclaimed orchestra conducted

Trembling Bells play, sing and duel with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, performing a new collection of songs from their forthcoming album The Marble Downs. Lead vocalist Lavinia Blackwall will sing in duet with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, whilst drummer and chief songwriter for the Trembling Bells, Alex Neilson, is joined by Simon Shaw on bass and Mike Hastings on guitar to make up the pack. Matthew Herbert’s One Pig

Matthew Herbert was present, microphone in hand, as the animal emerged into the world and continued to document its life in audio as it grew to adulthood. Although he was prevented from recording One Pig’s death, the process includes the recording of its butchery, cooking and consumption and the use of almost every part of the animal to make diverse products. The result is an elegy to an otherwise anonymous farm animal’s life, a beautiful and compelling account which prompts questions and insight into the presence of an animal so commonly underestimated, under appreciated and unacknowledged in our society.

Using a brand new musical instrument – the StyHarp – to manipulate the samples of the animal, along with instruments made from his One Pig, Matthew and his band will retell One Pig’s story in a live show complete with audio-visual composition and on-stage cookery.

Robert Glasper has long kept one foot planted firmly in jazz, and the other in hip hop. His latest project is no exception. Following two sell-out shows at the 2011 London Jazz Festival, Glasper now marks the launch of Black Radio, a future landmark album for Blue Note that boldly stakes out new musical territory, drawing on jazz, hip hop, R&B and rock, but refusing to be defined by any one genre.

Duane Eddy, the “King of Twang”, has been strumming across America and the world since 1958. During his illustrious career he has notched up numerous UK Top Ten hits, and collaborated with artists such as Paul McCartney, Ry Cooder and Hans Zimmer. In 2011, 25 years after his last record, Duane Eddy released his new album Road Trip to widespread critical acclaim. Produced by former Pulp guitarist and long time fan Richard Hawley, the album finds Duane Eddy as mesmerising a performer as ever, and was voted one of the best albums of 2011 by Mojo magazine. Small format movie cameras were the liberating technology of the mid 20th century, giving ordinary people the chance to capture everyday events.

Cipher (Theo Travis and Dave Sturt) have collaborated with visual artist Anthony Hatton to produce a thought-provoking and engaging cinematic and live music experience using previously unseen archive footage from the Media Archive of Central England, including local images of the Midlands from the 1930s to 1970s and with music composed by Cipher.

In Feature Film, a cinema-scale projection offers mesmerizing close-ups of Conlon conducting an unseen orchestra. Gordon fractures the normal filmic relationship between image and sound. Herrmann’s soundtrack and Conlon’s gestures, ridden with tension and suspense, take centre stage while Hitchcock’s film plays out in synchronized time on a small monitor in the corner of the space.

Also presented – for the first time in the UK – is the multi-screen installation of Zidane, made

by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno. A multitude of monitors shows real time footage of the footballer playing in a match between Real Madrid and Villareal.

The artists have explained that ‘you see things in this film that you never see on TV, like his hands and gestures’. The cameras never leave

Family Art Workshops

Maestros brings together two acclaimed moving image installations by the Turner Prizewinning artist Douglas Gordon. Exhibited for the first time together at the Mead Gallery, both works offer a compelling portrait of virtuoso talent.

In Feature Film (1999) the camera hones in on conductor James Conlon as he leads the Paris Opera Orchestra in a performance of Bernard Herrmann’s famous score for Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo (1958). Zidane (2006) zooms in on a different kind of orchestration, following French footballer Zinedine Zidane through the course of an entire match. In both works the maestros are immersed in their own space, performing with and at the same time abstracted from the players around them.

It took Johannes Brahms ten years and a shattered heart to write his First Symphony, and when it was finally complete, the papers dubbed it ‘Beethoven’s Tenth’. Yet when audiences heard the anguished heartbeats of its opening, they suspected they were in the presence of a genius on the Shakespeare scale – and when they heard the magnificent tune with which it finishes, they knew it.

With this performance, the Philharmonia and the acclaimed young Swiss conductor Philippe Jordan re-live that incredible adventure. Beethoven’s stirring Leonore overture gives the call to action, and then Simon Trpceski takes centre stage in Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto – an outrageously difficult showpiece written by and for the greatest piano virtuoso of all time. That won’t worry Trpceski. If you’ve been following the career of this astonishing young Macedonian pianist, you’ll know to expect some truly breathtaking keyboard fireworks.

Ludwig van Beethoven was the ultimate musical revolutionary, and he wrote his Third Symphony as a tribute to the ultimate revolutionary warrior – Napoleon Bonaparte. So when Napoleon betrayed his radical ideals, Beethoven tore up the score in an explosion of rage. There’s never been a symphony like the Eroica; two centuries later, music is still reeling from the shockwaves.

With the right conductor and orchestra, it’s one of music’s most electrifying experiences, so we’re in luck tonight: the veteran Swiss conductor Mario Venzago has this music in his blood, and no orchestra is more drenched in the German tradition than the Berlin Symphony.

That should make for some suitably demonic thrills in Weber’s spooktastic Freischutz overture, too. First though, youth meets tradition as the remarkable 20 year old piano virtuoso Kit Armstrong brings all his freshness and imagination to Mozart’s best-loved piano concerto.

They say that string quartets are ‘the music of friends’ – so why not share the joy?

Antonín Dvorák did exactly that when he invited a double bass to join in his Quintet Op.77, and the result is thirty minutes of Bohemian sunshine, pounding dance-tunes and melodies that you just can’t get out of your head. Earlier on, it’s as if the happiness rubbed off on Dmitri Shostakovich; certainly, he never wrote a more optimistic string quartet than his brilliant First. Meanwhile, Schubert’s darkly romantic Rosamunde quartet, distils pain into ravishing poetry.

Well, what did you expect from the greatest songwriter of all time?

In conversation with Alonso Cueto, Efraín Kristal and Maria Luddy Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the world’s greatest contemporary novelists, a playwright of distinction and a leading public intellectual.

He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010.

He will be discussing his latest novel, The Dream of the Celt (Faber, June 2012), which deals with key moments in the life of the Anglo-Irish diplomat turned Irish nationalist, Roger Casement - his denunciation of human rights abuses in the Congo and in the Peruvian Amazon, participation in the Easter Rising and his arrest, prosecution, and conviction for treason by the British in 1916. If you like harmony, then let the 200-strong choir wow you with their rendition of songs such as Killing Me Softly, Moon River, Copacabana, My Fair Lady, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, Bright Eyes. This is the choir’s 6th concert in the Butterworth Hall with the wonderful Midland Voice Orchestra providing the accompaniment. An enjoyable evening for all music lovers.

Tickets can be exchanged for another performance or for a credit voucher valid for 180 days. However, you must return your original tickets to the Box Office at least 24 hours before the performance (14 days for groups of 9+).

There is an administration fee of 50p per ticket. Tickets purchased as part of a subscription or package deal cannot be exchanged for credit vouchers. The booking fee is not refunded. Any credit not used after 180 days have elapsed will go to the Warwick Arts Centre Development Fund.
