DANCE TOURING PARTNERSHIP PRESENTS FABULOUS BEAST DANCE THEATRE

The Rite of Spring & Petrushka Tue 29 & Wed 30 Apr 7.30pm

The two halves of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s thrilling dance theatre double bill are a contrast in light and dark that mirrors the Stravinsky music of the same name.

The imagery in The Rite of Spring is dark, shocking, violent and sexual. The rhythmic elements of the music are played out in scenes of a pagan fertility rite, as age is sacrificed and mother earth is worshipped. By contrast Petrushka is bright and light. Elements of folk dances and warmer days are conjured as the company dances for approval from their ancestors.

The Rite of Spring is about dark elemental forces, about power and violence while Petrushka is about aspiration, salvation and spiritual enlightenment. Performed by an international cast of 14, both works are theatrical interpretations of the original music that created such outrage and excitement in the early 20th century.

And of course, putting a gun to my head is exactly what I’d expect someone like you to do.

Confirmation is a show about the gulf between beliefs that we can’t talk across. About our knee-jerk dismissal of the opposing viewpoint. About the echo chamber of agreement and validation we live in. About the way we only choose to see the evidence that proves we’re right.

Working with research into the phenomenon of Confirmation Bias, and a conversation with political extremism, Confirmation is an attempt to have an honourable dialogue, real and imagined, across that gulf. Not to debate the viewpoints, but to find out how we come to believe what we believe, and how, from a common starting point, we can end up so far apart.

RSC Live Following his production of Richard II in October 2013, RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran continues his exploration of Shakespeare’s history plays with Henry IV Parts I and II, an epic, comic and thrilling vision of a nation in turmoil.

RSC Associate Artist Antony Sher returns to the Company to play the infamous comic knight Falstaff.

He is joined by Jasper Britton as Henry IV and Alex Hassell as Prince Hal.

Henry IV Part II Wed 18 Jun 6.45pm King Henry’s health is failing as a second rebellion threatens to surface. Meanwhile, Falstaff is sent to the countryside to recruit fresh troops. Among the unwitting locals, opportunities for embezzlement and profiteering prove impossible to resist as Falstaff gleefully indulges in the business of lining his own pockets. As the King’s health continues to worsen, Hal must choose between duty and loyalty to an old friend in Shakespeare’s heartbreaking conclusion to this pair of plays.

Jeremy Deller curates All That Is Solid Melts Into Air A Hayward Touring Exhibition In All That Is Solid Melts Into Air, one of the UK’s leading artists, Jeremy Deller, takes a personal look at the impact of the Industrial Revolution on British popular culture, and its persisting influence on our lives today.

Deller combines contemporary music, film and photography with 19th century objects, approaching this material like a social cartographer to reveal the ley lines of cultural history. The radical transformation of the landscape in the early industrial era is powerfully evoked in Victorian images of factories ablaze at night, shown alongside John Martin’s apocalyptic painting The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (1852). Industrial folk music, the incessant rhythms and racket of the factory floor, heavy metal and glam rock, also permeate the exhibition in sound installations and film.

ARTIST’S TALK Jeremy Deller in Conversation Fri 2 May 4pm Having studied Art History at the Courtauld Institute and at Sussex University, Jeremy Deller began making artworks in the early 1990s, often showing them outside conventional galleries. In 1993, while his parents were on holiday, the artist secretly used the family home for an exhibition titled Open Bedroom. Since then, Deller has exhibited widely around the world and in 2013 was selected to represent Britain in the Venice Biennale.

A free return bus service for attendees will be provided from the Herbert Museum & Art Gallery to the Mead Gallery in time for the exhibition’s opening party at 6pm. The talk is free but places are limited so please book early by calling Box Office.

Pete Chambers is curator of Coventry Music Museum and an expert on Coventry music.

Peter Walters and Pete Chambers join forces to take visitors on a journey through Coventry’s industrial and musical past. The tour begins and ends at the Mead Gallery and includes refreshments at Coventry Artspace: one time rehearsal space for The Specials.

You’re standing on the Golden Gate Bridge when a huge supertanker suddenly rears up from the water and shoots into the air like a rocket.

Wagner’s Parsifal plays softly - but just keeps turning into Mahler. And against a starry sky, a medieval mystic chatters away to a Californian baby.

Those are the visions that inspired John Adams’ Harmonielehre. It’s been called a homage to German romanticism; it’s been called the greatest American symphony of modern times. But whatever you do, don’t call it ‘minimalist’ – because there’s nothing small about this huge, vibrantly colourful and utterly unique masterpiece from one of the world’s foremost living composers.

The Soviet censors described it as an ‘optimistic tragedy’. For Shostakovich, it was simply his Tenth Symphony. Grand, tormented and featuring at its heart a terrifying musical portrait of Stalin himself, what’s certain is that Shostakovich’s Tenth is one of the most powerful of all 20th Century symphonies.

Philip Glass himself acknowledges Dennis Russell Davies as one of his greatest living interpreters of his work. Nothing matches the experience of hearing this hugely accessible music performed live, and you’ll never hear it done better.

Tonight, Yuri Botnari leads the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra through its dark corridors. It’s one of those pieces that everyone needs to hear for themselves – and these players have this music in their very souls. This will be a thrilling conclusion to our season, and an overwhelming finish to a concert that begins with the truly imperial melodies of Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty, before Botnari and the MPO welcome Natasha Paremski for Rachmaninov’s Second Concerto. Paremski has been hailed as ‘flawless’ by the critics; so this should be rather more than just a brief encounter with the world’s favourite piano concerto.

Around the time George Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess became a hit on Broadway, Britten wrote his own folk opera Paul Bunyan, which is about as close to being a musical as opera gets.

Probably the world’s favourite opera, Mozart’s The Magic Flute has enchanted music and theatre lovers of all ages for hundreds of years.

Set in a lumberjack camp peopled with a cast of colourful characters, including singing geese and cats, dancing Swedes, bad chefs and blues singers, it tells the story of America’s mythical giant lumberjack and his daughter Tiny as they explore the American frontier.

Lewis Smith is a 21 year old singer-songwriter from Leeds who studies at the University of Warwick. Citing influences such as Iron & Wine, The National, Leonard Cohen and Gillian Welch, his music combines a lyrical and melodic subtlety with a deep-rooted story telling tradition, bringing together an eclectic array of inspirations and instruments to create a sound that has been described as “hauntingly beautiful rootsy old folk”.

The Fall formed in Manchester in 1976 and has existed ever since.

Essentially built around its founder and only constant member, Mark E. Smith the group’s music has gone through several stylistic changes over the years, but is often characterised by an abrasive guitar-driven sound and frequent use of repetition, always underpinned by Smith’s distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics.

In his Technicolor sonic scope are all kinds of sounds, from rock to country to soul to pop. Nothing is off limits, as long as it has a groove and goodness based in reality. The musician has been performing for 40 years, but is as fresh today as the first time he stepped on stage. There are no tricks or short cuts here. Far from it. His songs are as solid as the earth, yet carry no lingering hype or heaviness.

The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show with Smoove and Turrell Live Fri 9 May 8pm Legendary actor, host and broadcaster Craig Charles of Red Dwarf, Robot Wars and Coronation Street fame is also one of the UK’s best loved Funk and Soul DJ’s. Broadcasting for over 10 years on BBC 6 Music with the primetime Saturday night Funk & Soul show, Craig Charles has gone from strength to strength. He’ll be hosting a live Funk & Soul Show from behind the decks in the Butterworth Hall as part of a 2 DJ hour set, alongside 7-piece live funk band, Smoove and Turrell.

Smoove and Turrell feature one man raised on the soulful roots of American blues ‘n’ soul music, and one entrenched in hip-hop music & latin jazz funk flavours. Together the two form part of a 7-piece band who put the Northern back into soul with an added touch of funk. Toumani & Sidiki Diabaté Sun 1 Jun 8pm Two time Grammy®-winning kora sensation and arguably Africa’s finest instrumentalist, Toumani Diabaté makes his debut at Warwick Arts Centre alongside his 22 year old son, rising star Sidiki Diabaté. The pair have recently recorded a kora duet album together, which is due for release in April 2014, and together, they will perform music from the Malian griot tradition of storytelling. Their collaboration fixes and preserves a form of musical experience that’s almost seven centuries old whilst renewing and refreshing it at the same time. Sweet Baboo Sat 7 Jun 8pm A native of the North Wales countryside, Sweet Baboo aka Stephen Black is a single minded, idiosyncratic singer possessing an ear for sparkling melody and a gift for a deft lyrical turn – from darkly funny to piercingly tender, twinkling boastful to deliciously self-deprecating.

Reservations We can reserve tickets for 4 days – tickets not paid for within this time will be released for sale.

Tickets must be paid for a minimum of 30mins before performance starts.

Exchanging tickets Tickets are not normally refundable. Tickets can be exchanged for another performance or for a credit voucher valid for 180 days. However you MUST return your original tickets to Box Office at least 24 hours before the performance (14 days for groups of 9+). There is an administration fee of 50p per ticket. Tickets purchased as part of a subscription or package deal cannot be exchanged for credit vouchers.

The booking fee is not refunded. Any credit not used after 180 days have elapsed will go to the Arts Centre Development Fund.

Postage We charge 75p to post your tickets to you at a UK billing address (if booked one week in advance, otherwise we will hold them for collection at Box Office on the day of performance).

Discounts

Groups On select events we offer a discounted rate for groups of 10 or more. This is the price listed in brackets plus every 10th ticket FREE, and no booking fee. Check Box Office for availability – not available online.

Under 26s

Warwick Arts Centre is committed to upholding the Data Protection principles of good practice.

When processing your booking (whether over the phone, in person or online) we will ask you for your name, address, email and telephone number. This is essential for non-cash bookings.

We will also ask you if you would like to be kept informed about forthcoming events and campaigns at Warwick Arts Centre or other arts organisations. You can update your account online at any time at warwickartscentre.co.uk

Corporate Sponsors

As part of our access policy of introducing performance to young people, a limited number of tickets for under 26s is available on some events. This ticket price is to encourage independent attendance and so is not available to groups. This offer is available online.

Spaces reserved for Blue Badge holders in Car Parks 4 and 7. On busy nights, i.e. for Concerts, Parking Stewards are positioned at key drop off points to assist you.

Wheelchair access at ground level to Hall, Studio Theatre, Café Bar, Box Office, Cinema, Woods-Scawen Room, Helen Martin Studio and Bookshop.

Car parks 7 and 4

By bus

SAT NAV – CV4 7AL Approaching Coventry, simply follow brown signs for Warwick Arts Centre. Once on the University of Warwick campus, head for car parks 4, 7, 8 or 15.

These are the nearest car parks to the Arts Centre. Car Park 7 uses an environmentally friendly token machine at all times, although parking is FREE after 6pm (retain your token to exit). Please be prepared that at the end of a busy night it can take some time to exit from the upper floors of Car Park 7.

Regular bus services from Coventry, Leamington Spa and Kenilworth stop right outside Warwick Arts Centre.

Car parking Parking is FREE after 6pm. Please always allow plenty of time for parking when you visit us.

We have plenty of parking on campus, but to ensure you get into one of the closer car-parks we advise arriving at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

Advantages of arriving early: • Ensure your car parking place • Enjoy a pre-concert meal in Le Gusta Oven & Bar or a drink or snack in the Café Bar or in the Theatre Bar

Car parks 8 and 15 Car Park 8 is approx. 7 mins walk from Warwick Arts Centre but because there is no barrier it can be quicker to exit at the end of a busy night. Car Park 15 is approx. 10 mins walk from Warwick Arts Centre and also uses a token machine and exit barrier.

By train Coventry station is just a short taxi or bus ride away. Services run regularly via Birmingham and London to Coventry.

The number 11 or 12 bus brings you to Warwick Arts Centre. There is also a taxi rank opposite Warwick Arts Centre.
