WARWICK 20:20 PROJECT Warwick 20:20 is a project to refresh, renew and redevelop Warwick Arts Centre to create an updated larger space where we can continue to provide our distinctive, creative, artistic and cultural programme.

by Enda Walsh Fri 4 – Sat 5 May 7.45pm “There is a town where angels from Heaven come to visit Earth.”

Misterman tells the story of Thomas Magill, a marginalised member of a small Irish town called Inishfree, who re-enacts a day in his life through a series of tape recordings. This is clearly routine for Thomas – he knows the nuances of the conversations, the timings of responses. But witnessing the town’s sins becomes too much for Thomas and with one desperate act, the cycle is complete.

Warwick University Drama Society and Tech Crew present an innovative reimagining of Enda Walsh’s play.

Doctor musicians from all over Europe join together under the direction of conductor, Simon Wright, in aid of their chosen charity OHMI – a charity enabling music-making for the physically disabled.

Both Kodaly and Dvorák had it in their blood, and you can feel the passion – and the rhythm – in every note of these two enchanting, rarely-heard string quartets.

Marking the centenary of the end of the First World War, soloist Nicholas McCarthy, who was born without a right hand and who became the first left hand only pianist to graduate from the Royal College of Music, performs the Ravel Concerto for the left hand. He will also talk about his personal journey and the work of OHMI.

The Coull Quartet adore this music. Together with the unbuckled ardour and tender romantic poetry of Schumann’s lovely second quartet, it’ll make for a wonderfully high-spirited finish to their musical adventures in Coventry this season.

The remarkable young musician, Jess Gillam, who was the first saxophonist to win the Woodwind final of BBC Musician Of The Year, will play a transcription of the lovely Baroque C minor Oboe Concerto, accompanied by members of the orchestra. Then to the mystery of Elgar’s Variations.

Tue 1 May – Thu 21 Jun, Mon – Sat 12 – 9pm, Sundays and Bank Holidays 12 – 5pm FREE ENTRY John Piper (1903-1992) was a major contributor to the artistic and cultural landscape of twentieth-century Britain.

Through landscape paintings and collages, photographs, abstracts, theatre designs and relief constructions, Piper expressed a sensitivity to the physical characteristics and atmosphere of his native land while drawing influence from Paris-based abstract artists including Jean Helion and Alexander Calder. In particular, the artist was drawn to English churches and monuments. In this, the first major exhibition of John Piper’s work since 2003, is presented a selection of works starting with the artist’s

idyllic images of rural Britain in the late 1920s and 1930s through to the depictions of bombed out churches made during the Second World War as Official War Artist, as well as his romantic landscape paintings which were a preoccupation after the 1940s.

On 15 November 1940, the day after the Coventry Blitz, Piper visited Coventry and made a series of drawings of the ravaged city, in particular of the cathedral and other gutted churches.

He returned to Coventry in the 1950s when Basil Spence commissioned the artist, with Patrick Reyntiens, to design

a huge stained glass window for the city’s new cathedral, which was consecrated in 1962. This exhibition, presented as Coventry prepares to become City of Culture in 2021, makes direct reference to Piper’s significant contribution to the city.

The Creative Learning sessions will be available for all key stages and groups in formal and informal education. During their exploration of the exhibition, students will have the opportunity to create a sketch book in response to Piper’s work using collage, drawing, graphic design and painting for glass.

You might also want to combine your visit to the exhibition with a visit to Coventry Cathedral. John Piper not only painted the ruins of the original medieval cathedral in 1940 but was commissioned to make the Baptistry window of the new cathedral. See our website for more details.

Warwick Arts Centre is excited to launch our new programme of workshops for young people keen on developing skills and understanding of the world of moving image.

Moving Image Lab will focus on the wide variety of moving image that is now a part of our everyday life. You will explore and interpret a variety of sources while developing skills including video capture, online apps and animation, amongst many others.

The Lab will be led by Dom Breadmore of Ludic Rooms and a regular guest artist.

Sessions will run for 2 hours and there will be an opportunity to share what is created at the end of each term.

We’re shaking things up with this year’s film-making summer school and offering a wider variety of opportunities and art forms for young people, so they can choose a specialism more akin to how the industry works.

Working alongside artists, each specialist group (either acting, music, or film-making) will focus on their preferred role while gaining a greater understanding of how all the elements come together to create a film. The week will end with a screening of the final films, with a live musical accompaniment and performance that celebrates everyone’s hard work.

You will be able to choose at the time of booking whether you’ll be in the acting, music or film-making group for the week.

The event showcases a diverse selection of the most boundary pushing films of the decade including: Victim (1961), Darling (1965) and Performance (1970). These films, featuring iconic stars of the period including Dirk Bogarde, Julie Christie and Mick Jagger, explore the changing culture of Britain through the lenses of sexuality, gender and rebellion. This is a rare opportunity to experience these ground-breaking films once again on the big screen, with enriching introductions and panels to provide an enlightening viewing for audiences.

Booking fee

We include a booking fee in the published price of all tickets. The booking fee applies to all tickets, whether purchased by phone, online or over the counter (excluding schools, group bookings & Concert Series subscriptions). The fee is £2 on Comedy and Music events in the Butterworth Hall and £1 on all other events. The sum is invested back into the organisation, helping to maintain the programme, services and activities you experience during your visit to Warwick Arts Centre.

Reservations

We can reserve tickets for four days – tickets not paid for within this time will be released for sale. Tickets must be paid for a minimum of 30 minutes before performance starts.

Exchanging tickets

Tickets are not normally refundable. Tickets can be exchanged for another performance or for a credit voucher valid for 365 days.

However you MUST return your original tickets to Box Office at least 24 hours before the performance (14 days for groups of 9+).

There is an administration fee of £1 per ticket.

Tickets purchased as part of a subscription or package deal cannot be exchanged for credit vouchers. The booking fee is not refunded. Any credit voucher not used after 365 days will be deemed to have lapsed and will go to the Arts Centre Development Fund.

Ticket collection Print at home

Save time and print your tickets at home before you arrive. Select ‘Print at Home’ on selected events when booking online. Just print the email attachment, bring it with you and show it to a steward to enter the auditorium. Proof of ID may be requested.

Postage

We charge 75p to post your tickets to you at a UK billing address (if booked one week in advance, otherwise we will hold them for collection at Box Office on the day of performance).

Car Park 6 is at the bottom of Health Centre Road, located between The Oculus and Rootes Grocery Store. It is an open car park and 5 minutes walk from Warwick Arts Centre. Barriers open for Warwick Arts Centre customers on evenings after 6pm and all day on weekends.

Coventry station is just a short taxi or bus ride away. Services run regularly via Birmingham and London to Coventry. The numbers 11, 11U, or 12X buses bring you to Warwick Arts Centre. The taxi rank is at the side of the Arts Centre next to the bus interchange.

Our cover image features actor and writer Sukh Ojla in a dressing room before performing in her own play, Pyar Actually, one of the first professional productions staged in our temporary Goose Nest Theatre in Autumn 2017.

Sukh Ojla is part of the RIFCO Associate programme, set up to provide support and guidance to British Asian artists in creating original and new work. RIFCO are an award winning touring theatre company that develops and creates vibrant, accessible and high quality theatre which reflects and celebrates the contemporary British Asian experience, and a company that Warwick Arts Centre has supported and partnered over many years.
