Book Club

Hello, There is something very satisfying about symmetry (except where tygers are involved according to William Blake!). When I opened the Film Theatre in 1986, it was with Paul Schrader’s dazzling biopic, Mishima. Now, as we approach our temporary closure, I can offer you First Reformed, his best movie in a decade. Later that year, the Mead Gallery opened with an exhibition and residency from Andy Goldsworthy. As it closes, we have a new documentary about the artist and his spectacular environmental art, Leaning Into the Wind.

Over the summer holidays, there are plenty of films for the whole family, including Patrick, with Jennifer Saunders and an upstaging mutt, Incredibles 2 and a British Second World War charmer, Zoo, set in Belfast and demonstrating how to hide an elephant from the authorities.

Other national treasures are on display in The Bookshop, where Bill Nighy and Emily Mortimer challenge the petty-minded establishment in 1950s Britain, and Rob Brydon and Rupert Graves find liberation and self-expression in Swimming with Men. There is a thoughtful exploration of unconventional life choices in the Sundance Film Festival favourite, Leave No Trace, contrasted with the risqué but compassionate comedy, Ideal Home, starring Steve Coogan and Paul Rudd.

Cannes prizewinning thriller In the Fade and Icelandic comedy Under the Tree are a couple of excellent European options, and returning screen classics include Mel Brooks’ The Producers, now 50 years old but still mischievously provocative and, in his centenary year, two Leonard Bernstein scored treasures that demand to be seen on the big screen, West Side Story and On the Waterfront.

The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited. A nightmare vision of a domestic breakdown, this family tragedy transforms into something ominous and deeply disquieting.

This quirky comedic war film focuses on Scottish soldier Charles Plumpick (Bates), who is sent to a French town on a mission to disarm a bomb left behind by the retreating German army.

On arrival, he discovers that the area has been deserted with the exception of the inmates of a local asylum. The patients playfully take over the town and pronounce Plumpick their King but, despite being charmed by the locals, he must stay on task and find the bomb “A RAW HORROR MASTERPIECE FROM A before it detonates.

In 1959, free-spirited widow Florence Green (Mortimer) tries to put grief behind her by opening a bookshop – the first of its kind in the sleepy seaside town of Harborough. By exposing the conservative locals to the best literature of the day, including Nabokov’s Loilta and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, she initiates a mini cultural awakening.

Her efforts bring her a kindred spirit and ally in Mr Brundish (Nighy), who is sick of the town’s stale atmosphere, but she also makes fierce enemies, including the embittered Mrs Gamart (Clarkson).

Sarah Francis (Edmondson) is a young teacher who hasn’t quite got her life together; the last thing she needs is someone else to look after.

However, when her grandmother bequeaths Sarah her prized possession, a spoilt pug named Patrick, she is forced to step up to the plate. With the help of a kindly vet (Skrein) and a fellow dog walker (Bennett), Sarah finds her feet and discovers that Patrick might very well change her life for the better.

Warwick Arts Centre 20:20 is a 3 year project to refresh, renew and redevelop our building to create modern, updated, larger spaces where we can continue our distinctive, creative, artistic and cultural programme.

As we embark on Stage 2 of the project this autumn, our cinema will be closing for two years in order to commence the new build. We will be building three new cinemas, moving the Mead Gallery to the ground floor; and creating a spacious new-look foyer and restaurant, offering a more welcoming and comfortable environment for our visitors.

Warwick Arts Centre will be open throughout – please follow updates on our website regarding digital screenings, outdoor exhibitions and other events happening during the project.

We apologise for this disruption – but please bear with us because on re-opening in Autumn 2020 our building and facilities will be fit for the 21st century.
