The Tiger Lillies’ genre-defying brand of other-worldly vocals and unnerving performance style have carved them a unique niche in the cabaret and music theatre scene.

The character of Lulu is one of the great creations of 20th century fiction, and one of its most disturbing. Her unbridled sex appeal, her youth, and her self-destructiveness combine to make her dangerous, unpredictable and tragic. With the men (and the women) who circle her, Lulu’s journey from the streets to the toast of society and back again is told as a hypnotic and kaleidoscopic dance of death. Journey with her from Berlin to Paris, to the dark London streets of Jack The Ripper.

The band’s flamboyant live performance is enhanced by a projected immersive and richly atmospheric environment. Across the night, the ballad of Lulu unfolds as an uncompromising musical and visual melodrama.

Karaoke

A heartfelt story about survival.

UK Premiere

Putting into the words the utterly unspeakable, two performers have a difficult story to tell.

Karaoke is a performance about love and rockets for two performers and an autocue.

This performance fills an empty space with gypsy-inspired music and 400 fresh flowers. It transforms you too, your sense of what it is to be a mother, a father, a child. And you’ll leave feeling more alive than ever.

Playing out as an actual karaoke, the text and action read from screen and projected for the audience to see, the show is an exercise in manic anti-theatricality that’s either brazenly cynical or pathetically honest (depending on how you want to look at it). When the chorus kicks in we can all sing along.

Tue 4 & Wed 5 Mar 7.30pm Candoco, the renowned contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled performers, is twisting perceptions of what dance is, who can dance and who enjoys it. This triple bill features a new full-company piece by award-winning choreographer Thomas Hauert, as well as American contemporary dance pioneer Trisha Brown’s iconic Set and Reset/Reset, and Two for C, Javier de Frutos’ newest Mexicana-inspired duet for the company.

Thomas Hauert’s new piece challenges the dancers’ habitual ways of moving, creating patterns by swirling, pushing, jittering and side-stepping in and out of formations, shifting and changing like a flock of birds.

A Candoco highlight is the restaging of one of Trisha Brown’s signature works. Set to the original upbeat, contagious Laurie Anderson score, Set and Reset/Reset is a fluid, joyful work of pure dance.

Two for C is inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real. Set to traditional Mexican Ranchera music, the performance takes place in an intimate domestic world in which the use of Mexican wrestling masks suggests the deeper, darker forces at work.

The two halves of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s thrilling dance theatre double bill are a contrast in light and dark that mirrors the Stravinsky music of the same name. The imagery in The Rite of Spring is dark, shocking, violent and sexual. The rhythmic elements of the music are played out in scenes of a pagan fertility rite, as age is sacrificed and mother earth is worshipped.

By contrast Petrushka is bright and light. Elements of folk dances and warmer days are conjured as the company dances for approval from their ancestors.

Performed by an international cast of 14, both works are theatrical interpretations of the original music that created such outrage and excitement in the early 20th century.

This breathtaking new play explores the fascinating experiences of real people who see the world in a radically different light.

Discover the woeful tale of Benjamin Barker, self-christened Sweeney Todd, who returns to 19th Century London after 15 years to avenge the death of his wife and abduction of his daughter by corrupted and lustful Judge Turpin. With the help of eccentric pie-mistress Mrs. Lovett, the unstoppable pair vow revenge on the Judge and, later, the whole world. Customers soon discover Sweeney’s shaves are the closest they’ll ever receive, disappearing with only pie crusts for evidence.

Land Art in Britain 1966-1979

Uncommon Ground is the most comprehensive exhibition of British Land Art to date. Vaughan Williams’ Sixth is a firestorm of a symphony, forged amidst the carnage of the Second World War, and ending with an apocalyptic vision of a world in ashes. Is this the greatest British symphony since Elgar? Decide for yourself after the young British conductor Nicholas Collon conducts the Philharmonia in two 24-carat British classics: Britten’s salty East Anglian seascapes, and Elgar’s memorial to a different conflict, the haunting, hugely popular Cello Concerto.

Warwick Arts Centre is a charity and if you’ve booked recently you’ll have heard about donations supporting our artistic commissioning work and our pioneering education work in the local community. Your contribution, however small, really does help us make a difference. Here are a couple of recent examples:

Education work Donations have enabled us to offer, for FREE, expert artists to intrigue and inspire the school children participating in our Sculpture and Colour Trails. This will be continued throughout the year.

Donations are also helping support workshops in schools with professional companies performing at Warwick Arts Centre.

Artistic commissioning This season we have collaborated with Opera North and West Yorkshire Playhouse to coproduce a new version of Frank Wedekind’s Lulu by The Tiger Lillies.

Led by Matt Burman, Head of Programme and Audiences and produced by our Associated Producers China Plate, we are triggering a new digital work for children by choreographer Tom Dale called Ragbones (see pg 17). Also returning this season is Contender Charlie’s unforgettable Macbeth Blood Will Have Blood, originally developed through triggered@warwick (see pg. 16). It’s already been seen by over 3,000 young people and this season we’ve brought back the production for hundreds more local school children to be introduced to Shakespeare, alongside a performance for the public.

Last season the widely acclaimed Bank on It, installed in an empty office in Coventry city centre, delighted families and schools. The project came out of This_is_Tomorrow, a residency at Warwick Arts Centre and the University of Warwick that brings together artists and academics, which Theatre-Rites’ Artistic Director Sue Buckmaster was part of. Inspired by the economists she met Sue conceived Bank on It, which was subsequently co-produced by Warwick Arts Centre and the Barbican.

Booking fee We include a 50p per ticket booking fee in the published price of all tickets over the value of £5. The booking fee applies to tickets whether purchased by phone, online or over the counter (excluding schools and group bookings). The sum is invested back into the organisation, helping to maintain Warwick Arts Centre and the variety of services that are enjoyed all year round.

Reservations We can reserve tickets for 4 days – tickets not paid for within this time will be released for sale.

Tickets must be paid for a minimum of 30mins before performance starts.

Exchanging tickets Tickets are not normally refundable. Tickets can be exchanged for another performance or for a credit voucher valid for 180 days. However you MUST return your original tickets to Box Office at least 24 hours before the performance (14 days for groups of 9+). There is an administration fee of 50p per ticket. Tickets purchased as part of a subscription or package deal cannot be exchanged for credit vouchers.

The booking fee is not refunded. Any credit not used after 180 days have elapsed will go to the Arts Centre Development Fund.

Postage We charge 75p to post your tickets to you at a UK billing address (if booked one week in advance, otherwise we will hold them for collection at Box Office on the day of performance).

For selected events, an allocation of tickets with no booking fee can be purchased at reduced prices for teacher-led school / college groups.

By bus

SAT NAV – CV4 7AL Approaching Coventry, simply follow brown signs for Warwick Arts Centre. Once on the University of Warwick campus, head for car parks 4, 7, 8 or 15.

These are the nearest car parks to the Arts Centre. Car Park 7 uses an environmentally friendly token machine at all times, although parking is FREE after 6pm (retain your token to exit). Please be prepared that at the end of a busy night it can take some time to exit from the upper floors of Car Park 7.

Regular bus services from Coventry, Leamington Spa and Kenilworth stop right outside Warwick Arts Centre.

Car parking Parking is FREE after 6pm. Please always allow plenty of time for parking when you visit us. We have plenty of parking on campus, but to ensure you get into one of the closer car-parks we advise arriving at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

Advantages of arriving early: • Ensure your car parking place • Enjoy a pre-concert meal in Le Gusta Oven & Bar or a drink or snack in the Café Bar or in the Theatre Bar

Car parks 8 and 15 Car Park 8 is approx. 7 mins walk from Warwick Arts Centre but because there is no barrier it can be quicker to exit at the end of a busy night. Car Park 15 approx. 10 mins walk from Warwick Arts Centre and also uses a token machine and exit barrier.

By train Coventry station is just a short taxi or bus ride away. Services run regularly via Birmingham and London to Coventry.

The number 11 or 12 bus brings you to Warwick Arts Centre. There is also a taxi rank opposite Warwick Arts Centre.
