Awards season is upon us once more. Bill Murray’s FDR and Laura Linney’s Margaret will draw attention in one of the most charming films of the year in Hyde Park on Hudson, but the film also boasts an immensely strong supporting cast of Brits. Daniel Day-Lewis takes on another presidential role in Steven Spielberg’s biopic, Lincoln. If there is a braver performance than that of Helen Hunt in The Sessions, I would be amazed. The film will shock as many as it impresses but John Hawkes and William H Macy must also surely figure in the nominations.

There are some extraordinary screen classics back on the big screen. It Always Rains on Sundays is an arresting slice of post-war life from the Ealing Studios. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, Babette’s Feast (for Valentine’s day – the way to a man’s heart...) and a couple of Polanski classics: Chinatown and Repulsion will brighten the dark nights of the bleak midwinter.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

In among the juggernauts are smaller gems which should not be overlooked. In Bruges writer-director, Martin McDonagh returns with an equally smart and shocking comedy thriller, Seven Psychopaths. You Will Be My Son is a surprise package, like a contemporary Jean de Florette, set in the wineries of Bordeaux.

Starbuck is the best Canadian picture in the last five years (with, perhaps, the exception of Midnight’s Children) following the ‘fallout’ of a student sperm donor. No recounts how an advertising campaign destroyed the regime of General Pinochet in Chile.

Each session lasts 1.5 hours and start at 2pm every Wednesday from Wed 9 Jan to Wed 13 Mar, subscription includes admission to the 4pm screening on the day and all for a modest £80.

The special effects stand-off will be between The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Life of Pi, both pushing the boundaries of filming unfilmable books. The two will surely be in the running for best film probably along with the extraordinary eco fantasy Beasts of the Southern Wild – quite literally like nothing you have seen before.

Following the success of the pilot course last autumn, Sue Porter returns to lead participants through a wealth of contemporary movies, providing context and insight and giving you the chance to talk about what you have been seeing. Films under discussion in this season include Untouchable, The Sessions and Hitchcock.

Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Tue 15 Jan 6.30pm £5 The regular showcase of short films from the region returns with a new harvest of delights including Marc Presdee’s Titanic Love.

The Death & Life of Sherlock Holmes

Korean cinema is one of the most dynamic, diverse and exciting national cinemas in the world today, with internationally revered productions ranging from action movies to costume dramas, physical comedies to nerve jangling horror and some arresting contemporary social dramas.

Professor Jinhee Choi of Kings College University, London guides us through the origins and spectrum of new Korean cinema, the work of directors such as Kim Ki-duk and Park Chan-wook and introduces a complete screening of Joon-ho Bong’s 2009 drama, Mother.

Sat 26 Jan 11am – 3.30pm In this illustrated talk, Dr Paul Cuff, Dr Nicolas Pillai and Dr Michael Pigott (Film and Television Studies, University of Warwick) examine the relationship between Conan Doyle’s master sleuth and ideas of national identity, gender politics and advancing technology. From the films of the silent era to the television of the present day, this event will introduce you to romantic Sherlocks, cartoon Sherlocks, even Russian Sherlocks – the game’s afoot!

The talk will include screenings of the rare silent The Final Problem starring Eille Norwood (1923) and The Reichenbach Fall (2012) from the recent BBC series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the great detective.

Film historian Paul Duncan explores the making of this and other Polanski films, illustrated with behind-the-scenes images and anecdotes from his films, followed by a screening of Cul-de-Sac (1966), winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
