Their parents are firm but loving, and when they get things wrong they admit it, and say they’re sorry. Yep, Hoke’s Bluff is pretty ordinary. Could be anywhere, really. Just another town. With a whistful yearning for a world that never really existed, Hoke’s Bluff uses high school storylines, inspiring locker room speeches and sentimentality to tell an underdog story that’s been told a million times before, shifting and re-arranging the trite conventions and narratives of American teen movies to talk about what it means to be a winner on the inside. The dark pasts of three dishevelled travellers lost in a forest are untangled in this seamless and beguiling performance of grown-up fairytale and myth.
Since becoming Liberty’s Director in 2003 she has written, spoken and broadcast widely on the importance of the post-WW2 human rights framework as an essential component of democratic society. Drawings from the collection of mima John Ruskin described drawing as the “pictorial expression of thought”. In this exhibition of works from the collection of mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) are presented drawings by several key artists of post war America including Robert Smithson, Michael Heizer and Robert Gober. The drawings use evidence of the artists using drawing to develop their ideas, consider the use of space and to mark time. Shown alongside Aeneas Wilder’s Untitled #162, the works compel us to consider the continuing importance of drawing to artists’ practice in making the transition from a concept to its realisation in three dimensions.

Illustrated Talk by Aeneas Wilder Fri 12 Oct 6pm FREE Aeneas Wilder began implementing his system for creating artwork at his Edinburgh sculpture workshop in 1998, placing one stick of wood upon the ground and repeating the process until a vertical structure was created. By using the bare minimum of material within a strict framework, the artist has calculated that an infinite field of creativity is possible. In this talk, the artist will be discussing the inspiration for and development of his work since his student days up to his most recent installation at the Mead Gallery.

He is known as the father of Ethio-jazz, a unique blend of pop, modern jazz, traditional Ethiopian music, Latin rhythms, Caribbean reggae, and Afro-funk. Mulatu’s music crosses borders and the ‘Ethiopiques’ series exposed a new audience to his ‘Ethio-jazz’ experiments. Not until Jim Jarmusch’s film Broken Flowers, which heavily features Mulatu’s music, did the momentum start to gather and a young generation of urban artists began sampling his work. The most wellknown example of this is undoubtedly Nas & Damian Marley’s sample of Yegelle Tezeta on their hit As We Enter. Joined by a cast of very special guests, Mulatu will be playing old favourites as well as tracks from his new EP. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the father of Ethio-Jazz live.

Ondatrópica Tue 4 Dec 8pm Butterworth Hall £15 Conceived by Colombian musician Mario Galeano, the force behind the band Frente Cumbiero, and English producer Will ‘Quantic’ Holland, Ondatrópica brings together an all-star cast representing both the classic and modern styles of la musica Colombiana. For the recording Will and Mario invited musicians that they felt had made a particularly important contribution to the history of tropical music in Colombia. Michi Sarmiento, crowned the Godfather of Ondatrópica during the recording process, sounds as at home playing on the drunken Black Sabbath cover Iron Man as he does on El Caiman y Gallenazo, a song penned by his father.

christmas Family Weekend Get ready for Christmas Sat 1 Dec 10am – 6pm Sun 2 Dec 10am – 4pm Our Family Programming team are putting together a whole weekend for families to get into the Christmas spirit at Warwick Arts Centre. As well as performances of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt we’re also presenting The Incredible Book Eating Boy – the best 5 minutes of theatre going (see across for details). To add to the fun there’ll be craft stalls for those Christmas essentials, music, films in our Cinema (including the 50s classic Scrooge – a version of A Christmas Carol), art workshops, story-telling, food and surprises! The Big Draw: Make your own knock-down sculpture Thu 25 & Fri 26 Oct 11am – 4pm Tickets: £3 The Big Draw is the world’s biggest celebration of drawing which has grown into a month-long festival running throughout October in all parts of the UK. This year’s theme is ‘taking a line for a walk.’ The Mead Gallery joins the celebrations by offering visitors the opportunity to take linear sections of wood for a walk in space - making their own kick down sculptures as inspired by Aeneas Wilder’s Untitled #162. We have four groups for children and young people aged 8 – 18 that meet during University term time. Three groups meet on Saturdays between 11am and 1.30pm – for 8-11s, 11-14s and 14-16s. Each group is led by two experienced University students and members take part in drama games, invent plays, use scripts and show their work throughout the year finishing with a big production in the theatre in June.
