welcome Welcome to the new look Schools and Colleges brochure from the Warwick Arts Centre Education Department. Inside you’ll find full details of what we have to offer children and young people from Nursery to A level, from Reception to HND. You’ll find special ticket rates, workshops, post-show discussions, thought-provoking talks and exhibitions, performances and screenings that will stimulate, provoke and inspire. We are always looking for new ways to add value to young people’s visits to Warwick Arts Centre. If you have ideas of things we might try, feel free to contact myself or Carly to talk them through. 2011 was Warwick Arts Centre’s first year as a partner venue for youth groups taking part in the National Theatre’s Connections programme. Our Festival in early May was a great success with 10 groups of young people performing new plays in our theatre. We want to build on that success and will be welcoming groups again next year. Applications to join NT Connections 2012 are now open. If you are a youth theatre or school/college group with young people aged 13 - 19 and are interested in taking part you can sign up at www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/connections Who knows, you could be on our stage next spring! Student access to Warwick Arts Centre As part of their studies, it is often very useful for students to visit Warwick Arts Centre without seeing a performance. In the past we have welcomed students from Theatre Studies, Performing Arts, Business, Leisure & Tourism and Creative & Media Studies – and those who are simply interested in what goes on behind the scenes. We are happy to arrange visits at mutually convenient times. We can offer many types of visits from straightforward venue tours (generally free of charge) to half or whole day active learning events with access to Warwick Arts Centre staff (a charge will apply). He received an OBE in 2004 for services to literature and drama. A new production by DV8 Physical Theatre about freedom of speech, censorship and offence. From the 1989 book burnings of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses, to the murder of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh and the controversy of the ‘Muhammad cartoons’ in 2005, DV8’s production will examine how these events have reflected and influenced multicultural policies, press freedom and artistic censorship. In the follow up to the critically acclaimed To Be Straight With You, this documentary-style dance-theatre production will use real-life interviews and archive footage. Kevin Crossley-Holland is a prize-winning writer for children. His works have been awarded the Carnegie Medal, the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, The Smarties Prize Bronze Medal and the Tir na n-Og Award. His Arthur trilogy won worldwide acclaim and has been translated into 25 languages. As a young boy, Kevin was spellbound by the folk tales and myths that his father told and sang to him. Young students can find out how the themes and images of these traditional songs and his fascination with the Middle Ages have come to underpin his own writing, including his latest book Bracelet of Bones.

A remaking of Georg Buchner’s famous play with the lead character transposed from a soldier in 19th century Europe to a migrant worker in mid 20th century South Africa. The story is one of poverty, jealousy, murder and the struggle of an individual against an uncaring society which eventually destroys him. This new telling brings together rod-manipulated puppets and animated films in one of the most celebrated productions from Handspring Puppet Company, the internationally renowned, multi-award-winning company from South Africa. Their name has become even more known since their puppetry for the National Theatre’s War Horse has brought them to huge audiences in the West End and on Broadway.

Al is the co-founder of Gecko Theatre Company and began his connection with Handspring as puppet operator in over 300 performances of War Horse. After years of avoiding anything like narrative and plot and instead tinkering with the mechanics of theatre they present the story of Kim and Jackson – two hapless individuals in a dystopian nightmare. Their flat is repossessed, they escape an armed SWAT team by swimming through sewage, they’re attacked by killer bees and stowaway in a van of offal – and it just gets worse from there… The cast perform the story as if it were a radio play, sitting at tables, turning the pages of the script, doing the voices and adding sound effects. Simultaneously the stage is dominated by a series of projected images, a storyboard for an impossible movie-version of Tim Etchells’ unsettling text. Take your seat inside the Capsule - a theatre auditorium which seats just 6 people - and experience, through sounds heard and actions glimpsed, the performance happening on the outside, all around you. It’s often dark, and you’ll need to rely on your senses as the Capsule takes you on a journey through air, space and sea. Oh, and halfway through there’s a twist, but we can’t say too much about that... During Capsule, Talking Birds will be testing their digital access tool, the Difference Engine, which delivers subtitles and audio description to smartphones and other mobile devices. Tom Hunter Unheralded Stories Internationally renowned for his photographic portraiture, Tom Hunter won the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award in 1998 and in 2006 was the first artist to have a photography show at the National Gallery, London. Hunter lives and works in Hackney, London. For twenty years his work has portrayed and documented the communities he knows as neighbours and friends in East London. Unheralded Stories, a new series of pictures, explores the small everyday stories that arrive without fanfare, shaping the social fabric of a community and lending colour to the locality. In these pictures the bounds of a London borough offer up a whole wider world evoking images of lofty heavens, subterranean hells, verdant jungle, continental plains and mighty rivers.

Send us your photographs and we’ll show them!! Tom Hunter’s work is inspired by the people and events in his part of London as well as classic works of art – especially from great tableaux painters. He recreates familiar images with a local and contemporary twist via photography. We’d like to invite you to follow in Tom Hunter’s footsteps. Look at your own home town its history, its people, its daily life and recent events, mundane or magnificent. Taking an inspiration also from art history, compose a scene that refers to your chosen painting and tells the story of your town all in one piece. Take your photograph and send it into the Mead Gallery for inclusion on our public display wall just outside the Mead’s main entrance. The restaging of historical painterly tableaux in a contemporary setting for which Tom Hunter is perhaps best known is treated in these new works with a precise and focused attention to fragments or details of paintings containing an evocative gesture or specific painterly handling of the human form. Parking at Warwick Arts Centre
How to find us On approaches to Coventry, simply follow the signs for The University of Warwick and the brown signs for Warwick Arts Centre.
Daytime parking on campus can be difficult. Please aim to arrive 30 minutes before your event starts. Coaches Coaches now drop off and pick up on Library Road. Please follow the signs for the short walk to the Arts Centre. Please inform our Box Office if you are arriving by coach so that effective and safe arrangements can be made with campus security. Cars: Charges now apply for all University of Warwick car parks during the day. The nearest to Warwick Arts Centre is CP7 (free after 6pm). Please note CP7 has no lift. Minibuses CP4a (2hrs max) and CP5 (1hr max) are not height-restricted. Daytime charges apply – and please note that paper exit tickets are no longer available. After 6pm please use CP4, 4a or 5 all of which are free.
Disabled Access Wheelchair users are advised to book in advance so we can readily provide any assistance. Disabled patrons may also bring a companion FREE of charge. Contact Box Office for details. Spaces reserved in Car Park 7 ground floor. Wheelchair access at ground level to Hall, Studio Theatre, Helen Martin Studio, Café Bar, Restaurant, Box Office, Cinema, Conference Room, Music Centre and Bookshop. Lift access to Theatre, Theatre Bar, National Grid Room and Mead Gallery. Guide dogs are welcomed and can be cared for during performances, by arrangement. Receivers for our Sennheiser infra-red facility are available from Box Office free of charge. Toilet facilities accessible on all levels.
