HELLO The awards season is upon us once more and as ever, biopics feature strongly in the lists with studies of great men and momentous events.

Idris Elba’s Nelson Mandela is epic but a moving and compelling performance.

Solomon Northup was the victim of appalling injustice and cruelty as the eponymous slave in 12 Years a Slave, grippingly realised by Chiwetel Ejiofor and dazzlingly directed by Steve McQueen. Meanwhile, Cecil Gaines’ unusual perspective on contemporary American history comes from inside the White House where he served as The Butler for 30 years. Eric Lomax seeks to banish the ghosts of his imprisonment on the Burma Railway during WWII in The Railway Man. Llewyn Davis is entirely fictional but allows the Coen Brothers to explore the world of the New York folk scene circa 1961 in the evocative and playful Inside Llewyn Davis.

Remarkable women are also represented with Felicity Jones making her mark as Nelly Ternan, a young actress who finds herself the object of the affections of the greatest writer of the age, Charles Dickens, in The Invisible Woman. French cinema focuses on teenage female sexuality in a clutch of contrasting but provocative movies. Blue Is the Warmest Colour won the Palme d’Or at Cannes for its study of the sexual awakening and first serious relationship of Adèle with Emma.

François Ozon’s Jeune et Jolie begins like an exploitation pic but develops into a far more searching study of what drives a 17-year-old to go looking for thrills as a call girl in Paris and Daniel Auteuil brings Marcel Pagnol’s lovelorn Fanny back to the screen. In contrast, the feminine love and affection that Theodore encounters is of an entirely different form, a digital creation in Spike Jonze’s charming offbeat romance, Her. There is enough here to guarantee you get your money’s worth from your Film Membership.

Serving eight presidents in over 30 years, Gaines witnesses the birth of the civil rights movement, the impact of the war in Vietnam, JFK’s assassination and the Watergate scandal.

With Robin Williams as Eisenhower, John Cusack as Nixon and Alan Rickman as Ronald Reagan, this film captures a defining era of US history as seen through the eyes of an African-American, whose own fortunes change as society progresses.

When retired alcoholic Woody (Dern) receives a letter to say that he’s won a million dollars, he becomes determined to get his money. Unable to convince his ageing father that it’s a mail scam, son David (Forte) agrees to take him on the 800-mile trip to Nebraska to claim his prize.

Along the way, more and more people from Woody’s past find out about his supposed fortune, revealing some uncomfortable family truths.

Tue 7 – Thu 9 & Sat 11 Jan Dir: Abdellatif Kechiche France/Belgium/Spain 2013 180mins subtitled Cast: Adèle Exarchopoulos, Léa Seydoux This year’s winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival is a passionate French film about two young women who fall in love.

The film follows 17-year-old Adèle (Exarchopoulos) as she negotiates her first sexual experiences and relationships. After a difficult break up with a boyfriend, Adèle meets Emma (Seydoux), a blue-haired art student and soon they begin an intense love affair.

Although Abdellatif Kechiche’s (Couscous) film is sexually explicit, it is first and foremost a story about love. The brave and natural performances by the two female leads means that the physical scenes never feel gratuitous but instead accentuate the emotional turmoil that Adèle suffers.

Philomena 12a Fri 10, Mon 13 – Tue 14 & Thu 16 Jan Dir: Stephen Frears UK/USA/France 2013 98mins Cast: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan Judi Dench delivers another Oscar-worthy performance in this real life story based on the book by former BBC journalist Martin Sixsmith (Coogan).

Philomena

Philomena is an Irish woman now in her late 60s, who was forced to give up a child she had 50 years ago.

While living at a convent for unmarried mothers, her child was sold to an American couple, and she never saw him again. Sixsmith decides to take on Philomena’s story, and helps her track down the son she never knew.

The second instalment of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy sees Bilbo, Gandalf and the thirteen dwarves trek across Middle Earth to the Lonely Mountain, in a bid to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon, Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

As the back story of this perennial family favourite is retold in Saving Mr. Banks, there’s no better reason to bring Mary Poppins back to the big screen! With well-known and wellloved songs, this classic musical tells the story of a magical nanny who turns up at the home of the Banks family.

Expect the usual jaw-dropping visuals and set pieces as well as the return of some familiar faces such as Orlando Bloom as Legolas and the new face of Stephen Fry as the Master of Laketown.

Based on Mandela’s autobiography, this epic new film chronicles his early life, education and 27 years imprisonment before his election as South Africa’s president and his work to heal the country’s once-segregated society.

Newcomer Marine Vacth shines as Isabelle in this coming-of-age story about sexual awakening, from director François Ozon (In the House). Reminiscent of Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour, Ozon’s provocative film doesn’t succumb to straightforward answers, instead leaving the audience to make their own moral conclusions.

Managing to repair the damage, but with his navigational systems down, he soon finds himself in the middle of a storm, and begins to confront the very real notion of his mortality.

A chance to spend the day exploring particular themes in film guided by a specialist in that field.

A string of popular American television dramas such as The Sopranos, The Wire and Breaking Bad, have been singled out as possessing certain narrative and stylistic characteristics that elevate them above ‘ordinary television’ to something more akin to cinema, using actors, directors and writers whose primary domain is film.

This talk by Dr Richard Wallace (University of Warwick) will explore this recent phenomenon, tracing the history of these programmes on US television and its impact on film and the perception of film.

What is a film wave? A catch phrase for critical evaluation? A clever marketing device for selling a certain kind of film to audiences? A loose collection of filmmakers with certain common goals? Or a clearly defined set of films that reflect specific cultural values or a certain style?

This talk by Ian Haydn Smith (Editor of the International Film Guide) will offer an overview of how certain film waves, from the popular (Italian Neo-realism, French New Wave) to the lesser known (Japanese New Wave, Cinema Nuovo), have developed and shaped contemporary cinema. It will be followed by a screening of Thomas Vinterberg’s Dogme debut Festen.

by Vaughan Williams.

Themes from this score were later incorporated into his seventh symphony, Sinfonia antartica.

Mon 27 Jan 5pm A special one-off screening of Burning Patience (Ardiente Paciencia, 1983). This rarely seen poetic gem was remade a decade later as the Oscar award-winning Il Postino (1994). Set in the Chilean coastal village of Isla Negra, it tells the story of Pablo Neruda’s friendship with his young postman, who asks his help in writing love poetry to win over the local innkeeper’s daughter.

Set against the backcloth of Chile’s ‘road to socialism’ in the 1970s, the personal and the political intertwine in this tender, moving film.

The screening will be prefaced by an Introduction to Neruda by Gerald Martin (University of Pittsburgh) and Edwin Williamson (University of Oxford) with selected readings from Neruda by Julie Christie.

The Stuart Hall Project 12a Tue 28 Jan 1pm Dir: John Akomfrah UK 2013 103mins Documentary film-maker John Akomfrah (The Nine Muses) delves into the life and work of cultural theorist Stuart Hall. A pioneer of cultural studies, Hall explored culture through identity, race, gender and class.

Combining family photos, television excerpts and a soundtrack by Hall’s favourite musician, Miles Davies, this is a fascinating portrait of a key British thinker.

Protective of her literary creation, Travers travels to America at the request of Disney, who charms her into begrudgingly selling the rights to her book. As production begins, Travers soon finds herself affronted by the attempts of the American team to “jazz up” her characters, and begins to dig her heels in as the movie moves beyond her control.

Based on the best-selling autobiography of Eric Lomax, The Railway Man tells the story of a 22-year-old British Army officer and train enthusiast captured by Japanese forces in Singapore in 1942. Forced to work on the Burma Railway as a prisoner of war, Lomax was subjected to torture when they found him in possession of a radio.

Based on the novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, this 1961 psychological thriller returns to the big screen. Deborah Kerr stars as a governess who becomes convinced that the children in her care are possessed. Largely dismissed at the time of its original release, the film has since been declared one of the great British films of all time.

The film itself begins some years after the ordeal with Lomax (Firth) now living in Berwick-Upon-Tweed and married to Patti (Kidman).

Soon after the honeymoon, Patti realises that her new husband is still haunted by his past. Unable to get him to share his experience, Patti discovers the truth from his former comrade, Finlay (Skarsgård).

In an unnamed war-torn MiddleEastern country, a young woman tends to her comatose husband, who has been wounded by a bullet to the neck. Able to talk to him for the first time in their ten-year marriage, she unburdens herself, telling him of her suffering and frustrations.

As such, her husband becomes a symbolic “syngué sabour”, which according to Persian mythology is a magical stone that absorbs the strife of those who speak to it. As she talks, the young woman begins to break free from her emotional shackles.

Inside Llewyn Davis 15 Fri 14 – Thu 20 Feb Dir: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen US 2013 105mins Cast: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake The Coen Brothers’ new film centres on a struggling folk musician in 1960s New York.

Oscar Isaac gives a superb turn as Llewyn Davis, a young, angry, penniless musician always asking for favours from his dwindling circle of friends. Trying to forge a solo career, Llewyn drags his guitar across New York looking for gigs and couches to sleep on.

With echoes of their earlier works such as O Brother, Where Art Thou? and A Serious Man, this film has garnered a host of five star reviews for its wonderful cast (including great cameos from Adam Driver and John Goodman) and its melodic soundtrack in which folk songs are performed in full.

Adapted from the Pulitzer-winning play of the same name, Meryl Streep delivers a barnstorming performance as Violet, the mouthy matriarch of the extended Weston family.

Coming together for the funeral of Violet’s husband Beverley, simmering family tensions are brought to the fore as Violet’s relationships with her three daughters reach breaking point, and their significant others try to avoid getting caught in the cross fire.

Ralph Fiennes’ directorial follow up to 2011’s Coriolanus explores the little-known relationship between the young actress Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens. From their first meeting during the first staging of Wilkie Collins’ (Tom Hollander) The Frozen Deep, the film follows Nelly and Dickens as they embark on a reticent but inevitable love affair.

Director David O. Russell’s reteams with his Silver Linings Playbook stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in this highly anticipated crime drama inspired by Abscam, the American government sting operation in the 1970s and 80s.

Alongside strong lead performances from Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones is a terrific supporting cast, including Joanna Scanlan as Catherine Dickens and Kristin Scott Thomas as Mrs Ternan. With a script by Abi Morgan (Shame, BBC’s The Hour), this is an accomplished and involving period drama.

Cooper stars as an FBI agent who hires con artist Irving (Bale) as well as his wife (Lawrence) and his girlfriend (Adams) to get information on gangsters and corrupt politicians.

Anxious and borderline anti-social, he finds himself falling in love with his computer operating system, the artificially-intelligent Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson, who won the Best Actress award at the Rome Film Festival).
