hello The big banner titles are here: Les Mis, Django Unchained and the return of Lawrence of Arabia but let me tell you about some of the other gems coming up.

Cloud Atlas takes a complex and wide ranging novel and applies the technical genius of the Wachowskis (The Matrix) with the dramaturgy of Tom Tykwer (Perfume) to make a faithful adaptation of the text alive with the sensational visual impact of cinema.

Out in a league of his own is Ken Loach. The Spirit of ‘45 is a reflection of the hopes and aspirations which drove the post-war regeneration and the establishment of the Welfare State. There’ll be a national simulcast of the film on Sun 17 Mar after which you can take part in an interactive Q&A with the director Ken Loach.

There’s also three highlights from the London Film Festival: Robot & Frank finds Frank Langella growing old disgracefully in a comedy which is tender and touching, Good Vibrations is an exhilarating account of the man who brought punk to Belfast, bridging the sectarian divide and giving us all Teenage Kicks, and In the House, my pick of the festival, is François Ozon (Potiche) playing Hitchcock with Fabrice Luchini and Kirstin Scott Thomas (both reason enough to see any film) being mischievously playful.

A Late Quartet, (not to be confused with Quartet) is a feast of classy acting about an ageing string quartet. Trance sees Danny Boyle return from Olympics duty to deliver a sizzling London-based noir thriller. If you liked Memento, you will like this heist movie with psychological gymnastics.

Matteo Garrone’s Reality is a scathing satire on Berlusconi’s Italy, which has resonances way beyond Italy and, looking at corporate greed and corruption, Richard Gere is, again, sensational playing the plausible and charming villain of Arbitrage.

Taking place in the summer of 1939, with Europe on the brink of war, both parties realise Anglo-American relations hinge on the success of this trip, and cultural differences must be overcome to ensure the special relationship endures.

Featuring powerhouse performances from Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren, Hitchcock focuses on the relationship between the Master of Suspense and his wife Alma Reville (Mirren) as they make the genredefining Psycho. Rejected by the big studios, Alfred and Alma are faced with mortgaging their house in order to finance the film.

Directors Tom Tykwer (Perfume) and the Wachowskis (The Matrix trilogy) team up to tackle David Mitchell’s epic novel, where 6 stories set across different continents and generations entwine, starting with a 19th century sea voyage and ending with a post-apocalyptic tribal village.

From neo-realist masterpieces like Rossellini’s Rome, Open City through Fellini’s La Dolce Vita and Moretti’s cinematic wanderings on his Vespa, the city of Rome has played a defining role within some of the world’s canonical works of film.

After the financial and critical success of Repulsion in 1965, and under the spell of Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter, Roman Polanski embarked on Cul-de-Sac, his madcap gangster hostage farce set on an island. Film historian Paul Duncan explores the making of this and other Polanski films, illustrated with behind-the-scenes images and anecdotes from his films, followed by a screening of Cul-de-Sac (1966), winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.

There will also be screenings of Tess (Sat 23 & Sun 24 Mar), Roman Polanski’s adaptation of Tess of the D’Urbervilles. See p07 for details.

In this Film Talk, Dr Lesley Caldwell (UCL) and Dr Dom Holdaway (University of Warwick) will offer a comprehensive overview of Rome on film, focusing on shorts and sequences from the great Italian ‘maestri’ and mapping out Rome’s cinematic quarters.

This will accompany a screening of Michelangelo Antonioni’s L’eclisse.

But when Marion is taken ill, Arthur is forced to find his own singing voice, and compete in the local choir competition in place of his wife. A hilarious, life-affirming journey of musical self-discovery.

The Spirit of ‘45 U Les Misérables 12a Tess 12a

This documentary written and directed by Ken Loach (The Angels’ Share) focuses on 1945, a pivotal year in British history in which the unity that carried Britain through the Second World War led to the formation of the Welfare State.

Combining film from regional and national archives with sound recordings and contemporary interviews, Loach creates an absorbing political and social narrative about one of the most important periods in British history.

The screening on Sun 17 Mar will be a live simulcast broadcast from London along with an interactive Q&A with Ken Loach.

The enduring West End musical makes its way to the big screen, from The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper.

Winner of three Academy Awards, Roman Polanski’s seminal film is an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s classic tale of the corruption of innocence, Tess of the D’Urbervilles.

An innocent country maiden, Tess Durbeyfield is sent by her poor family to ask for help from their rich distant relatives, the D’Urbervilles. But her new ‘cousin’ Alec D’Urberville takes advantage of her, and his actions threaten the course of her life, and the stable relationship she craves with the morally upstanding Angel Clare.

Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, Les Misérables tells the tale of Valjean (Jackman), who has been hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. Now a factory owner, he agrees to care for worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) daughter Cosette, and in doing so changes their lives forever.

At Beecham House, the annual fundraising concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean (Smith), an eternal diva and the former wife of one of the residents.

Sat 30 & Sun 31 Mar Dir: David Lean UK / US 1962 228mins Cast: Peter O’Toole, Alec Guinness, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Omar Sharif The seminal David Lean epic returns to the big screen in this new digital print in honour of its 50th anniversary. The film made a star of lead actor Peter O’Toole and won seven Academy Awards in 1963, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Cinematography. Recounting the life of the infamous and enigmatic military man T.E Lawrence, the film takes in his exploits in the desert, where he led attacks on Aqaba and Damascus. This screening will include an interval.

Pi sets out from India with his family on a freighter full of their zoo animals bound for America, but a treacherous storm hits and leaves Pi stranded on a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean with a vicious tiger called Richard Parker for company. A remarkable story of survival and belief.

Django Unchained 18 Fri 5 – Sun 7 Apr Dir: Quentin Tarantino US 2012 165mins Cast: Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson Quentin Tarantino returns with another stylishly violent piece of pop-culture, concerning a freed slave on a quest to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner.

Robot & Frank

It is 1858 in the American Deep South, and Django (Foxx) is a slave bought by a German bounty hunter Schultz (Waltz) who intends to use him as his accomplice before granting his freedom. As part of their agreement, Schultz travels with Django to the Mississippi plantation belonging to Calvin Candie (DiCaprio) who has Django’s wife in his possession.

by Peter Sarsgaard), programmed to cook, clean and improve his wellbeing. Initially resistant to the android’s attempts to engage him in gardening and cooking, Frank soon learns to exploit the robot’s lack of morality and they develop an unlikely friendship.

Written and directed by Michael Haneke (Hidden), Amour has provoked an outpouring of emotion from critics and audiences alike, winning the 2012 Palme D’Or at Cannes. Taking place almost entirely in their small flat, Georges (Trintignant) and Anne (Riva) are a blissfully happy couple in their eighties. When Anne suffers a series of strokes, Georges is left struggling to care for the wife he promised he would never put in a home. An absorbing and intimate portrait of love and ageing, and the unrelenting sadness of losing the one you love.

After the success of the 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony, director Danny Boyle returns with Trance, a psychological thriller set in London’s underworld. James McAvoy stars as Simon, an art auctioneer who gets amnesia following the theft of a valuable Goya painting. In an attempt to locate the missing painting, coldblooded gangster Franck (Cassel) hires a hypnotherapist to unlock Simon’s memory.

With echoes of Christopher Nolan’s Memento, Boyle has created an unsettling art heist film that explores how memory can be manipulated.

Richard Gere takes a rare central role in this tale of greed and duplicity set in the upper echelons of New York’s moneyed classes.

Gere plays Robert, a hedge-fund magnate hiding both an extramarital affair and major financial fraud before a desperate sale of his business to a stalling bank. As he juggles between business and the women in his life (the mistress, the wife and the daughter), things begin to unravel and Robert’s glamorous world falls apart.

In 1970’s Belfast, the city is traumatised by the Troubles, but one man is more concerned with musical matters. Believing that the country’s burgeoning punk scene is not getting enough recognition, record shop owner Terri Hooley sets up his own label and begins signing bands, including an unknown act called The Undertones. When BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel plays their track Teenage Kicks on his show twice in row, he cements Hooley’s place in rock and roll history. An entertaining biopic that depicts an Alternative Ulster set apart from sectarian violence.

Germain (Luchini) is a weary literature teacher who discovers a talent for prose in 16 year-old student, Claude. When Claude hands in essays detailing the private life of a school friend, Germain is at once disturbed by Claude’s audacious intrusions but also enamoured by his new role as critic and mentor.

The BFG U Sat 20 Apr 1.30pm UK 1989 87mins Dir: Brian Cosgrove Cast: David Jason, Amanda Root, Angela Thorne Unable to sleep during the witching hour, orphan Sophie is snatched from her bed one night by the BFG, the world’s only benevolent giant.

Whisked away to Giant Country, Sophie meets unfriendly giants like the Bonecruncher, the Manhugger and the Gizzardgulper. With the help of the BFG, Sophie comes up with a plan to defeat the mean giants.

Lore

Based on Rachel Seiffert’s Booker-shortlisted novel, The Dark Room, the film is set in Germany in the aftermath of World War Two. Lore is a teenage girl who is left to fend for herself and her four younger siblings when her Nazi parents are imprisoned.

Oblivious to the historical turn of events and their Nazi indoctrination, Lore and the children embark on a trek across Germany to join their grandmother in Hamburg. On their way they encounter Thomas, a young Jewish survivor who confronts Lore’s unwavering ideology.

A world-renowned string quartet struggle to maintain equilibrium when their oldest member Peter (Walken) announces he must retire due to a Parkinson’s diagnosis. The revelation brings longburied resentments to the surface, and threatens to derail the group on the eve of their 25th anniversary concert. A small but perfectly formed ensemble piece from some of Hollywood’s finest actors.

Reality 15 Wed 1 & Thu 2 May Dir: Matteo Garrone Italy / France 2012 116mins subtitled Cast: Aniello Arena, Nando Paone, Loredana Simioli Following the success of 2008’s Gomorrah, Matteo Garrone’s new film is a dark tragi-comedy that satirises Berlusconi and the Italian obsession with reality television.

Centring on Luciano, a wheeling-dealing fishmonger whose obsession with becoming a contestant on ‘Big Brother’ leaves him increasingly paranoid and on the brink of financial and emotional ruin.
