Weekend@Wilson Session I Friday 1:00 - 3:00 SUMMER SKY FUN! How did ancient people think up those constellations? Come make a constellation of your own and share star stories from around the world.

In our second hour, we will look at some heavenly visitors-- meteorites from space-- and learn how to find our own micrometeorites.

HANDCRAFTED JEWELRY Learn basic stringing and finishing techniques while making both a necklace and a pair of earrings. Design tips will be given to create jewelry designs that are comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and well made. A selection of genuine stones will be available to choose from.

Instructor: WWC Farm Crew and John Showalter

The Farm Crew will lead a tour of our mixed -crop and livestock operation which continues an agriculture tradition dating to 1894. Pigs, piglets, chickens, sheep, cows are attractions as well as ride in an Amish Wagon provided by John Showalter.

JOURNAL-MAKING Embellish a composition book using a variety of materials such as scrap paper, cards, fabrics, and notions. Each journal will be unique through artistic choices in materials. Keep it for your travel notes, sketches or give it as a special gift. Easy, fun, and no experience required.

Whether you have never stepped foot on a yoga mat or are a seasoned yogi, join this all levels class for a gentle practice of the basic yoga postures (asanas) and breath work (pranayama) to stretch, strengthen, and energize the body, and to calm the mind. Mats will be provided. Wear loose fitting comfortable clothes that you can move in easily (jeans and other restrictive clothing discouraged).

This is a one hour session.

RAISING CHICKENS

Farm fresh eggs from your own backyard? If you are a new poultry owner or just thinking about raising poultry, this workshop is for you. The class will include an overview on how to properly care for chickens, how to provide appropriate food and shelter, specifics of raising poultry for production of eggs or meat, and the benefits of specific breeds.

Live chickens will be on hand to demonstrate proper handling techniques. Chickens are great additions to a backyard. They are entertaining to watch, provide nutrient dense eggs, create wonderful fertilizer and are an excellent way to reduce the population of pesky insects and ticks in your yard.

Weekend@Wilson Session II Friday 3:30 - 5:30 pm MAKE A COBWEB BROOM Explore this traditional Appalachian craft and the basics of broom making while making your very own cobweb broom. The cobweb broom is designed to access hard to reach areas, including those pesky cobwebs. Broom corn can be irritating for those with sensitive skin, so please wear long pants and sleeves. Please bring a towel.

Explore the herb cabin and herb garden, blueberry and raspberry patches, veggie productions and hoop houses, chicken coop and the garden cabin.

Discuss the process of growing fruits, herbs and vegetables and sample certain edible things. Take time enough for the kids to ask questions they may have about our food growing system and spend time with the chickens.

Ages 3 and up Class limit: 20 YOGA FOR HEALTH AND HAPPINIESS

You will leave the workshop understanding basic yoga techniques and foundation poses to help you feel confident in a scheduled group class. The workshop will end with a discussion on nutritional and spiritual wellness.

Star Gazing

Dr. Warren J Gaughan teaches courses in classical and jazz music. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Maryville College, a Masters of Music degree from UNC-Greensboro, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University as a classical musician he has performed as a member of the Asheville Symphony, played live on WCQS (the local public radio station), and given solo recitals at Warren Wilson and other local colleges. His jazz performances are as a member of the "The Asheville Gentleman" and "Picante." Both groups perform locally and in public schools throughout North Carolina, teaching the history and styles of jazz and Latin Jazz. Currently in his 33rd year of teaching at Warren Wilson, Dr. Gaughan enjoys the challenge of teaching and performing in two different genres.

THE ART OF PIE Let’s play with pie! In this class we will discuss the art, logistics, and flavor potentials when creating your very own from scratch pies. Each participant will have the chance to create two of their very own mini-pies (one savory and one sweet). Bring an apron if you so desire! We will also send you home with helpful tips, recipe cards, and plenty of pie inspiration.

Dance is not only healthy for children physically, but it can also help them manage their moods and their stress, express their anger, frustration and fear, and bring themselves back into balance in a fun and creative way. This workshop for children will integrate my Nia速 training and life-time history of ballet, modern, creative dance and yoga for a fun, interactive workout. No dance experience required.

This workshop introduces the low elements of the Team Challenge Course.

No ropes or harnesses but plenty of fun and challenging problem solving activities for all. Wear comfortable clothes to be active in the outdoors.

We will walk around campus taking notes on different tree species and learning their scientific names (Impress your friends!) and interesting characteristics (ecology, habit, flower, fruit, leaf shape, bark etc.) about each to aid in identification. We’ll then work on creating our own tree guides, which you will keep.

ENERGY PSYCHOLOGY & TAPPING Tapping or EFT (the Emotional Freedom Technique) is a simple way to overcome fears, phobias, stress and even reduce chronic pain!

In this class you will learn a sequence of EFT points to tap and also points on the body to tap to reduce fear, enhance the immune system and even a spot to tap to reinforce joyful experiences and memories!

PEN TURNING This pen turning workshop will appeal to the beginner as well as advanced turners. All aspects of how to turn a pen using a lathe will be covered. Using blanks from wood found on Warren Wilson College’s campus, each participant should complete two ball point pens.

Teams of participants will create their own original five-minute plays based on plot clues given by their director - a graduate of the Wilson theatre program. Join us for three short student-made films that were made in a new dual course approach where students engage in content one course and filmmaking in another course. The documentaries look at traditional Appalachian fiddling, local sorghum molasses making, and historic tobacco farm. Join us in Canon for a once in a lifetime experience as Lloyd Arneach, renowned Storyteller, weaves an evening of magic for all ages.

Weekend@Wilson Lloyd Arneach An enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, Lloyd Arneach was born, reared and currently lives on the Cherokee Reservation in Cherokee, North Carolina. He learned his first legends from two storytelling Uncles on the reservation.

He has told stories at the Kennedy Center (Washington, D.C.), National Folklife Festival (Washington, D.C.), the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian (Washington, D.C.), the Winnepeg International Storytelling Festival (Canada), the Discovery Channel, festivals, schools, universities, Pow-Wows, theaters, and other venues throughout the United States. His CD Can You Hear the Smoke? features stories and legends adapted

by Lloyd.

In 1992, Children's Press published his book, The Animal's Ballgame, based on one of Lloyd's favorite Cherokee animal stories. Lloyd wrote a book of Cherokee stories, Long-Ago Stories of the Eastern Cherokee, that was released in early 2008 and is now in its fifth printing (2014). He was included in an article on storytellers in the 2010 Winter issue of the American Indian Magazine produced by the National Museum of the American Indian. He received the Mountain Heritage Award from Western Carolina University in 2011 and he was included in a Cherokee Edition of The Foxfire Magazine, 2012.
