WPR YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND WPR believes all youth should have the opportunity to participate in recreation activities and not be restricted due to finances. The Youth Scholarship FUNd is funded by the Johnson County United Way and donations from businesses and organizations. Scholarship applications are available at the Wa r r e n s b u r g Community C e n t e r.

WHEN CAN I REGISTER? You may register online as early as November 30 from the comfort of your own home! Beginning December 12, you may also call or come by the Community Center to register. Programs, classes, and leagues must meet a minimum enrollment one week prior to the start date unless otherwise noted.

(Physicians note required) Membership Passes - Refunds may be given for injury or illness (physicians note required). Refund will be prorated based on the remaining days/punches remaining on the pass. Unused punches may be transferred to another pass or program. Nassif Aquatic Center Season Passes, Employee Wellness Fitness Passes, and Employee Wellness Pool Passes are NOT eligible for credits, refunds or transfers. Facility Rentals - Refunds are given for injury or illness (physicians note required), requested cancellation 30 days or more prior to rental or inclement weather conditions. General Information

WARRENSBURG COMMUNITY CENTER (WCC) 445 E Gay Street, Warrensburg, MO 64093 Whether you want to get in shape, stay in shape, have a swim, hold a business meeting, family reunion or birthday party, or just hang out with friends and have FUN, the WCC is a great place for you! Make sure to stop by our Front Desk where our friendly community center attendants can check you in, help you register for activities and answer any questions you might have about all the great things your Center has to offer. The Fitness Center has been named Best Fitness Center in the Burg 2 years in a row for good reason, with a wide variety of fitness equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, bikes (recumbent and upright), weight machines, free weights, kettle and exercise balls and much more! Daily exercise and fitness classes for all ages are held daily in the state-of-the-art Aerobics Room. The Fitness Center opens at the same time the WCC does and closes 15 minutes before the building closes. A Walking Track that circles the Community Center on the 2nd level and overlooks the WCC Indoor Pool area is free to use with Check-In at the Front Desk. 11-1/3 times around the track equals 1 mile. Children 13 & younger must be accompanied by an adult. The Walking Track is open the same hours as the Fitness Center. The WCC Indoor Aquatic Center features a lap and leisure pool, a hot tub, and a zero-entry splash pool with 2 slides, a mushroom fountain and pool FUN! The 7 WCC Reservable Rooms can accommodate meetings, special family events and programs of all shapes and sizes. Whether hosting a small event or one for 200, Warrensburg Parks & Recreation (WPR) can help! See details on Page 5. The WCC Gymnasium features 1 regulation size court or 2 full courts with 6 basketball goals, 2 volleyball courts, bleachers, and 3 Pickle Ball courts. The Warrensburg Senior Center is located on the west end of the WCC. See Page 29 for more information.

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR BOTH AQUATIC FACILITIES If Nassif is unable to open due to inclement weather, the WCC Indoor Pool will be open 1 - 5 pm unless the building is closed due to special hours. On those rain days at Nassif, Nassif Pass holders can use their passes at WCC. Non-pass holders will pay WCC admission prices at the WCC indoor pool. If Nassif opens and later closes due to inclement weather, the WCC Indoor Pool will not open.

Aquatics

SWIMMING LESSONS These swim lessons are held at the Warrensburg Community Center's Indoor Pool. Classes are taught by WPR Staff. Water Babies and Preschool Swim Academy classes are 30 minutes long and all other levels are 45 minutes. Register early, classes fill up quickly! Fee: $50; Register by Wednesday prior to session start date and fee is reduced to $40!

Two sessions available - Each session has eight classes. Session 1: Tuesday's Jan. 23-Mar. 13 Session 2: Saturday's Jan. 27-Mar. 17 LEVELS

MILESTONES NECESSARY FOR SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION

Entering and exiting the water safely; submerging in a rhythmic pattern; gliding on the front and back with Waterbabies assistance; performing combined stroke on front and back with assistance; changing body position in the water; and Suggested Ages: experiencing wearing a life jacket in the water. Each child 6 mon-3 yrs must be accompanied by a participating adult and wear a swimsuit and swim diaper. Entering the water independently using ladder, steps

or side and travel at least 5 yards; submerging mouth Preschool Swim Academy and blowing bubbles for at least 3 seconds; exiting the

water safely; gliding on front for at least 2 body lengths; Suggested Ages: rolling to back and floating for 3 seconds; and recovering 3-4 yrs to a vertical position. (All skills are demonstrated with assistance.) Entering the water independently using the ladder, steps or side; traveling at least 5 yards; bobbling 3 times then safely exiting the water; gliding on front supported at least Suggested Ages: 2 body lengths; rolling to back float for 3 seconds with 4-6 yrs support; and recovering to a vertical position with support. (Most skills are demonstrated with assistance.)

Level 1

Entering and exiting; moving into a front float for 5 seconds; rolling to back; floating for 5 seconds then Level 2 recovering to a vertical position; pushing off and swimming using combined arm and leg actions on front Suggested Ages: for 5 body lengths; rolling to back; floating for 15 seconds; 5-7 yrs and rolling to the front then continuing to swim for 5 body lengths. Entering and exiting; jumping into deep water from the slide; swimming the front crawl for 15 yards; maintaining position by treading or floating for 30 seconds; and Suggested Ages: swimming the elementary backstroke for 15 yards. 6-10 yrs

Entering and exiting; swimming the front crawl for 25 yards; swimming the elementary backstroke for 25 yards; swimming the breaststroke for 15 yards; swimming the Suggested Ages: back crawl for 15 yards; and open turns on the front and 8-10 yrs back.

Snowball Hunt Come hunt snowballs with WPR! Who knows what the weather will bring this winter, but we can guarantee there will be snow on January 21st! Come out and watch thousands of ping pong balls fall from the sky just like a snow shower! There will be prizes for those who attend, some big, some small--it all depends on the snowball. Mother & Son Olympic Night Hey boys! Bring your mom and join us for a fun-filled evening of games, sports, and food! Everyone is asked to dress in their favorite athletic teamâ€™s attire and be ready for an active evening. There will be music to pump you up and a photographer to capture the memories! This special night will include organized gym games, fun competition, pizza, and prizes! This is an ideal event for moms to spend time with the young man(men) in their lives. All participants will receive a Tiny T’s clinic T-Shirt.

Home School PE This program is intended for all Home School families; participants will take part in weekly activities in the Community Center Gym, Grover Park tennis courts, Buford Ballpark, and indoor swimming pool. Each session will focus on activities and sports to develop foundational physical skills in all age groups. SPORTS WOW! What an “off”season! At the end of the 2017 Baseball/Softball season, myself, key staff members, the Recreation Committee, and Parks and Recreation Board set out to answer some very hard questions about the state of our program. When we began this process we started with the idea of making small tweaks to improve the quality of our program. The actual result has taken us on an amazing journey in which we worked very close with a group of volunteer community members whom took on the herculean task of a fresh start! Staff started the evaluation process at the end of June, with a Postseason Commentary meeting with parents, coaches, and family members. During that meeting participants expressed praise as well as concern with how the season went. It was at this meeting staff and members of Recreation Committee determined that we had some work ahead of us! After the Postseason Commentary concluded, staff developed and distributed an end of season survey to further identify the core issues which needed addressed. Once the survey closed, staff went to work on analyzing the data from the survey participants. Then in early September, Staff invited over 300 parents, coaches, and community member to take part in a focus group. At the focus group staff presented data from the survey and the Postseason Commentary. It was at the focus group, the Recreation Committee selected eight individuals to serve on the Baseball/Softball Steering Committee. The Steering Committee is made up of parents, coaches, and community members. Its purpose was to evaluate and make recommendations to ensure the Parks and Recreation baseball and softball programs fit the current needs of the community. After a month of hard work and dedication, on Wednesday, September 27th, the Steering Committee presented the framework of its plan to the Parks and Recreation Board. At this meeting the Parks and Recreation Board voted unanimously to leave the current baseball and softball league it participates in, called the Shippy League, and to task the committee to finish developing the new program it had been working on creating. The new program was designed to better serve their patrons and address the greater needs of the youth in the community. The newly formed Warrensburg Parks and Recreation Baseball and Softball Organization initially includes two leagues – (1) Recreational Developmental League (RDL) and (2) Next Level League (NLL), with plans to add a third league for elite level competition in the future. The new Warrensburg Parks and Recreation Baseball and Softball Organization has adopted the USSSA Baseball & Softball rules as a governing body and developed a tier system for skill advancement. The new RDL is designed to create and/or improve skill sets and build a foundational knowledge for the sport. The goal of the new NLL is to help those with an increased level of skill participate in a semi-competitive league while elevating skill sets and personal improvement. I am extremely proud of the dedication and passion of the Baseball/Softball Steering Committee, and what they have accomplished in such a short time-frame. I am convinced the program they have developed for the youth in Warrensburg will be positive change and will better serve our patrons well into the future! Respectfully,

Recreational Developmental League (RDL):

This baseball and softball league lays the groundwork for Next Level League play. Teams will be formed from the results of the skills assessment. The RDL teaches players the fundamentals of the game, basic skill sets, and an emphasis on team work. All players bat, all players have equal play opportunity. Games will be played in the local area and possible travel to other communities. Good sportsmanship will be required of all players and coaches at all times. This league is an excellent opportunity to introduce children to the game. The RDL is designed to create and/or improve skill sets as well as learning to work as a team and build a foundation for the sport.

Next Level League (NLL):

Baseball and softball teams will be formed from the results of the skill’s assessment. Players not selected for the NLL would have the opportunity to play in the Recreational League. The NLL will have an emphasis on game strategy, elevating current skill sets, and increased expectations of the players to attend practices and games. The NLL play will take place locally, as well as other opportunities outside of the area. Good sportsmanship will be required of all players and coaches at all times. The goal of the NLL is to help those with an increased level of skill keep striving for personal improvement while bring able to participate in a competitive and local environment.

Mandatory Skills Evaluations: All participants MUST attend the skills evaluation day. Please bring a glove to participate. These evaluations ill be used to evenly distribute team talent. Times and dates will be handed out at a later date.

Fifty Plus (50+)

FIFTY PLUS 50+ FITNESS This group exercise class helps individuals maintain strength, flexibility, mobility, endurance, and cardiovascular ability. Participants use weights, resistance, bands and more. This is the most intense of the Gold Plus classes. AQUACISE This class is designed as a high intensity water aerobics class. All levels are welcome and you may go at any pace you prefer. Water resistance provides muscular strengthening and endurance as well as a great cardiovascular workout. Go easy on yourself or make it a double time session. Whatever the case may be, you will find your perfect speed in this class. Water shoes recommended.

ZUMBA GOLD A low-impact, moderate-intensity exercise program using Latin and other music rhythms to provide a super cardio workout. This Zumba class is suited for beginners and older adults with less intense, lower impact dance moves that can have you dancing the day away!

FIFTY PLUS CLASSES

HYDROEXERCISE This class is great for those who want a gentle workout that includes stretching and toning. Your body will be 50% -90% in the pool. All abilities are welcome.

For those who are fifty-plus but not yet sixty-five, we offer reduced rates for our Fifty Plus classes! If you are age 65 or older, you may be eligible for FREE classes (see below).

SILVER SNEAKERS CLASSIC Have fun, and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a Silver Sneakers ball are offered for resistance. A chair is used for seated and/or standing support.

Fifty Plus classes are group exercise classes specifically designed for ages 50+. Each class has varying levels of difficulty. A schedule of class days and times can be found on pages 20 & 21, on our website and at the Community Center.

SILVER SNEAKERS YOGA You will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing yoga poses. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity. Pickle Ball This program is designed to teach and develop pickle ball skills for adults of all ages interested in getting exercise, socializing, and having fun. Similar to racket ball and tennis, pickle ball is a paddle sport, played in pairs that is quickly spreading across the country. This 4-week program will feature instruction and game play each week, plus a mini tournament on the final evening of the session. Please enter the name of your registered partner at checkout. Inclusive Playground-For-All Project What started as a dream is about to become a reality, thanks to a lot of hard work, effort, and dedication. The Inclusive Playground, a joint project between Warrensburg Parks and Recreation (WPR) and Johnson County Board of Services (JCBS), began in 2016 as an idea to create a family-friendly, all-inclusive recreation space where everyone - of all ages and abilities - can play to the greatest extent possible. A location in Cave Hollow Park was chosen for the playground, and a major fundraising effort was underway. The total cost of the project was estimated to be around $400,000. Warrensburg Parks & Recreation Director Dodee Matthews, who helped spearhead the project along with JCBS Executive Director Scott Holmberg, was able to secure a $150,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources, along with the promise of another dollar for dollar matching grant through the Missouri Parks & Recreation Association (MPRA) in partnership with Game time and Playcore. The WPR Board has promised $20,000 for the project, and JCBS and a volunteer committee has established a capital campaign to raise funds for individual playground equipment, as well as a fundraising project called “Pennies For Play”, where jars are located throughout the community for donations. At print they have raised a total of $85,000. Ground-breaking for the playground is planned for 2018. WPR is very excited about this project and is looking forward to helping provide this wonderful recreational space for the community. The city of Warrensburg’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force has written in support of the project: “We know that inclusion is not simply acceptance or access, but is instead a commitment to transforming the way we as a community construct and support public spaces of all kinds. The inclusive play area will provide not only a place to play, express joy, be in nature, and spend time with family and friends, but also a place where barriers are brought down, and community is built. We thank JCBS for their efforts to bring inclusive play to Warrensburg, and helping our community to continue and strengthen its commitment to welcoming and respecting all people.” We couldn’t have said it any better.
