Celebrating

Class of 2025 Hall of Fame

Incarnate Word Academy proudly recognizes alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends who have made extraordinary contributions to their communities and to the IWA mission. The Hall of Fame celebrates those whose faith, leadership, service, and accomplishments embody what it means to be a Woman (or Man) of the Word.

This year’s Hall of Fame class is an inspiring group whose impact spans education, athletics, parish life, healthcare, philanthropy, and community outreach. From classrooms to volleyball courts, from ministry to medicine, each honoree reflects the core values that define Incarnate Word Academy.

Honoring Lifelong Dedication and Service

Two beloved members of the IWA community were recognized in the category of Education: Deb Fink Murphy ’68 and Carol Joller James ’58 (posthumous). Both women dedicated decades of service to Incarnate Word Academy, shaping the lives of students and supporting the mission with compassion and grace.

Deb’s 21 years as Administrative Assistant were marked by professionalism, kindness, and unwavering commitment to students and staff. Carol’s 40 years of service to IWA left an indelible mark on the Academy, as she welcomed generations of Red Knights with warmth and joy. Together, their legacies represent the heart of IWA—faithful service and genuine love for the community.

Leaders of Faith and Outreach

In the category of Parish Ministry, Kay Carter Dieckmann ’86 was honored for her decades of service to her parish and community. From leading ministries and fundraising efforts to supporting her alma mater, Kay exemplifies stewardship and faith in action.

Recognized for Community Outreach, Christin Benbow Simpson ’05 has dedicated her career to transforming healthcare through trauma-informed practices and equitydriven leadership. As a nurse practitioner, nonprofit founder, and consultant, Christin’s work uplifts others and creates lasting change across Missouri and beyond.

For her commitment to Philanthropic Outreach, Erin Hendrickson Milton ’02 was celebrated for her years of service to IWA as an alumna leader, event chair, and advocate for scholarships and student opportunities. Her spirit of generosity and leadership continues to strengthen the IWA alumnae network.

Champions of Excellence and Perseverance

In recognition of her outstanding athletic achievements and professional success, Erin Waller Meredith ’05 received the Red Knight Distinguished Alumna award. From leading IWA’s volleyball teams to back-to-back state titles in 2004 and 2005 to competing at Stanford University and later playing professionally in Switzerland, Erin’s drive and discipline have continued in her career as Director of Clinical Operations at Nurix Therapeutics.

Bianca Beck Latham ’08 was honored as a Red Knight Great for her accomplishments as a collegiate and professional

basketball player and for her continued leadership as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant. Her dedication to helping others achieve excellence through resilience and mindset reflects the true Red Knight spirit.

The Red Knight Team Award was presented to the 2004 and 2005 Volleyball Teams, whose back-to-back State Championships under Coach Lisa Patterson Orlet ’87 remain among the most celebrated moments in IWA athletic history. The 2004 team’s undefeated season (38–0) and the 2005 team’s come-from-behind state final victory exemplified teamwork, grit, and the legacy of excellence that defines IWA volleyball.

Joe Schwent, a longtime supporter and parent, was named Red Knight Champion for his years of service to the IWA community. From chairing the annual golf tournament and emceeing the auction to cheering on countless Red Knight victories, Joe’s enthusiasm and dedication have strengthened the bonds between families, athletics, and tradition.

Finally, Lisa Rolfes was honored with the Spirit of Courage and Perseverance Award for her extraordinary strength and faith. Following her husband Dan’s life-threatening medical emergency in 2024, Lisa’s quick action, compassion, and unwavering hope

became a story of courage that inspired the entire IWA community.

A Celebration of Legacy

The Hall of Fame Class of 2025 reminds us that the Red Knight spirit extends far beyond the walls of IWA. Whether through service, faith, leadership, or perseverance, each inductee reflects the mission to live the Word in the world.

Their stories inspire current students and alumnae alike to lead with compassion, to serve with humility, and to pursue excellence in every endeavor. Together, they represent generations of Red Knights whose lives illuminate the values of Incarnate Word Academy — faith, virtue, and courage.

As the IWA community gathered to celebrate these remarkable honorees, one truth was evident: the legacy of the Red Knights continues to grow stronger with each passing year.

Carol Joller James ’58 was honored posthumously with a Hall of Fame Award. Her family accepted the recognition on her behalf, presented by President Sharon Gerken ’78 — a heartfelt tribute to Carol’s lasting impact and legacy at Incarnate Word Academy.
Jim Johnson served as the Master of Ceremonies for the evening — guiding the celebration with warmth, humor, and heartfelt connection to the Incarnate Word Academy community.

Always an Incarnate Girl

when Dolores Theisman Kruep ’45 walks her fingers over the worn face of her Incarnate class ring — still a perfect circle of memory — time folds. The year is 1945. The war is ending, St. Louis streetcars sing on their tracks, and a determined seventeen-yearold rides them before dawn, headed to a hilltop school that will shape the rest of her life.

“I paid my own way,” she says matter-of-factly. “I worked nights at the post office, got home around two in the morning, slept a little, and caught the bus and the streetcar to school. That’s just what you did.” Tuition was eighty-three dollars for the year — no small sum for a girl whose father did not think higher education necessary for daughters. “I cried and moped until he finally said I could try one year,” she adds with a quiet smile. “After that, I paid for it myself.”

Finding a Way Forward

At Incarnate, Dolores found a place that was both demanding and deeply human. The campus was smaller then — fewer buildings, fewer amenities — but it contained a world. In the warmth of classrooms and the hush of the chapel, in the soft scrape of chairs before the bell, she encountered teachers and Sisters who noticed when a girl nodded off from a long night shift and gently woke her with a little tap. “They were tolerant and kind,” she remembers. “I was tired, but they knew I was trying.”

She can still map the commute: off the line near Normandy Drive, the golf course across the way, St.

Charles Rock Road running steady beside them. In summer, windows were open for lack of air conditioning, and sometimes the music from Valhalla Cemetery — across the road — drifted in during morning services, carried lightly through the open windows. The details have the texture of a sepia photograph, but in her telling they are crisp, almost tangible; a school day carried on a breeze, lifted by a melody.

Her days were long and full. She would arrive at school still sleepy from work, eat whatever she could manage, and dive straight into lessons. There was no time to complain — only a fierce gratitude that she was there. “I wanted to learn,” she says. “I wanted to make something of myself.”

That determination, born out of sacrifice and routine, shaped not just her education but her sense of identity. Incarnate wasn’t just a school — it became a lifeline.

Dolores Theisman Kruep ’45 in her 1945 senior portrait.

A Life on Campus

Dolores was a guard on the basketball team (“I had to jump for those rebounds!”), vice president of the Athletic Association, and secretary of CSMCE. She sang, preferred French, and loved Clair de Lune. Her favorite actor was Tom Drake, the blue-eyed star of Meet Me in St. Louis. She laughs at the notion that life was slower then. “We had class every day, all day — no downtime. It was busy.”

There were plays (staged in homerooms before the theater existed), Field Day, and formal proms with sweeping gowns. “We stood out in those dresses,” she grins, recalling the one night she arrived at Candle Light, a popular dance spot, wearing red satin.

“We thought we were movie stars.”

Not everything was glamorous. Dolores remembers the gym uniform — the one-piece with bloomer bottoms — with the affectionate shudder only an Incarnate girl can muster. “No shorts back then,” she says. “Bloomers!” Her family, gathered around, dissolves into laughter. In one yearbook note, classmates teased: “Even with her eyes closed, you know when Dolores is rolling her eyes — it’s constant.” The habit still appears on cue, a small flash of humor that bridges decades.

There were no modern conveniences, no technology to shorten the day. Yet, for Dolores, those simpler times were rich with purpose. “We didn’t have much, but we had each other,” she says. “Everyone helped everyone.” When a girl forgot her lunch, someone shared. When a test felt impossible, another stayed to study. Faith and friendship were the invisible hands that carried them through.

The Bonds That Endure

What endures most vividly is community. “It was a small school. Everybody knew everybody.” Friendships braided across the years: Marceline, sweet and doted-on; Rosemary, lively and clever. The sisterhood of Incarnate was more than shared classrooms — it was shared life.

Long after graduation, those ties continued. Dolores recites names as if taking attendance — Mary Catherine, Mary Ellen, Juanita, Rosemarie. The 25-year reunion was held in Kirkwood near the train station, a memory as bright as the day’s sun. Later came luncheons at Schneidhorst’s and patio gatherings filled with laughter and familiar stories. “As people got older and moved, it got harder,” she admits. “But we kept up as long as we could.”

Every reunion was more than a social event — it was a renewal of belonging. The women who once played on the same basketball court or knelt in the same chapel pew came together and instantly remembered who they were. The same jokes, the same eye rolls, the same warmth returned like muscle memory.

Even now, when Dolores flips through her yearbook, she doesn’t just see faces — she feels the energy of that time. “You never forget those years,” she says quietly. “They’re part of you.”

Dolores Theisman Kruep ’45 proudly wears her original Incarnate Word Academy class ring every day — a cherished symbol of faith, perseverance, and lifelong belonging.
Dolores Theisman Kruep ’45 kept her original 1945 grade report — a handwritten snapshot of her hard work, dedication, and the academic excellence that defined her years at Incarnate Word Academy.

The Class of 1945 on graduation day — a moment of pride and tradition as young Red Knights, including Dolores Theisman Kruep ’45, stepped forward with faith, friendship, and hope for the future.

A Legacy That Lives On

Through her recollections runs a theme: Incarnate as a home that asked much and gave more — a place where a young woman discovered that grit and grace could coexist. Her ring, the chapel’s light, the hum of a campus growing over time — these are threads in a fabric that still wraps the school today.

Dolores turned 98 this June. She remembers telephone exchanges from childhood and classmates’ names without effort; what she sometimes forgets are the dates of last week. But when she speaks of Incarnate, the details sharpen. She recalls walking past the chapel where the sisters lived, slipping into Mass, and feeling the solemnity of something greater than herself. She remembers her graduation — meant to be “properly solemn,” she laughs, “but we still found a way to smile.”

As she reflects, her tone turns thoughtful. “We were girls then — young, hopeful, trying to find our place. Incarnate gave us that place.”

She pauses, fingers grazing her ring again. “That ring isn’t just gold. It’s everything we went through — the work, the friendships, the lessons, the faith. It’s a promise.”

The Spirit of Incarnate

That word — belonging — carries forward. Dolores’s family speaks of three generations touched by the school; a granddaughter and great-granddaughter bring their own chapters to the story. Old yearbooks sit open on the table, their pages annotated in pencil. The same ring design glints on younger hands.

There’s a gentle power in hearing a 1945 graduate talk about work shifts, streetcars, chapel benches, and friends who felt like sisters. It is the power of continuity: girls discovering their voices, testing their courage, learning to show up for themselves and for one another. The uniforms have changed; the bloomers, mercifully, have not survived. The campus has expanded and adapted. But the heart — community, faith, joy in one another — remains unmistakable.

Forever a Red Knight

Before we leave, Dolores slides the ring off for a photograph. The engraving is still legible, the gold warmed by time. She sets it on the page of her senior portrait — guard, singer, French student, friend — and smiles with that familiar eye-roll sparkle.

“I paid my way,” she repeats, as if explaining everything in four words. Then she adds the sentence that explains even more:

“And I was an Incarnate girl, Always an Incarnate Girl. Forever. Amen.”

A legacy of Red Knights! Dolores Theisman Kruep ’45 with her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Cassout ’26.

Incarnate Word Academy is proud to publish an Annual Report each year as part of The Word magazine on the activities of the preceding fiscal year (July 1, 2024 –June 30, 2025.) The Annual Report provides an overview of the school’s financial status and details the goals and outcomes of the school’s fundraising efforts.

Incarnate Word Academy takes seriously its responsibility to earn and maintain the trust of our donors. As such, every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this Annual Report. If you have a comment or correction, please contact Sharon Gerken ‘78, President at sgerken@iwacademy.org

“As this Annual Report reflects, IWA stands at a moment of both great opportunity and responsibility. Together we are called to amplify our mission, attract future students, and continue building resources that will secure a vibrant future for our school”

IIt is with great pleasure that I address the Incarnate Word Academy community during such a meaningful time in our school’s journey. This past year has been filled with growth, reflection, and important work as we continue to advance IWA’s mission through our Strategic Planning process. Each effort is deeply worthwhile when we witness the incredible growth of our students — academically, spiritually, and emotionally.

One of the highlights of every year for me is attending the Women of the Word (WOW) presentations. Each senior’s capstone is a powerful moment of selfreflection that showcases how our young women have grown in faith, intellect, and confidence throughout their four years at IWA. These moments are a reminder of the transformational impact of an IWA education — one that nurtures curiosity, faith, and leadership.

Our school continues to provide a nurturing and challenging environment that encourages students to be bold thinkers and compassionate leaders. This unique culture empowers young women to explore new ideas, test their limits, and prepare to make a difference in the world beyond our campus.

This year also carried personal meaning for me and my family. My wife, Karen, and I have always viewed IWA as an extension of our own family — and with 46 nieces and nephews between us, it was especially meaningful to see the youngest, Rachel Jansen ’25, graduate this past spring. We couldn’t be prouder to see her carry the Red Knight spirit forward into her next chapter at Missouri State University.

The Board of Trustees remains deeply committed to sustaining and strengthening IWA’s mission. Our ongoing Strategic Planning process — including a comprehensive study of our campus and future needs — continues to guide our discussions about how best to serve current and future generations of Red Knights. We are dedicated to discerning the most faithful and forward-looking path for our Academy.

As this Annual Report reflects, IWA stands at a moment of both great opportunity and responsibility. Together, we are called to amplify our mission, attract future students, and continue building the resources that will secure a vibrant future for our school. These goals require the dedication of every member of the IWA community — and for your continued faith and support, we are sincerely grateful.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish you a year filled with many blessings and good health. We remain steadfast in our mission, united in faith, and filled with hope for what’s ahead.
