President’s Message

“This Annual Report is significant, but even more important is the vision each donor has for IWA. Thank you for your dedicated support and generosity. Your commitment has made the education of IWA students a top priority.”

Dear Alumnae, Parents, and Friends,

As I embark on my fourth year as President of Incarnate Word Academy, I am continually amazed and inspired by this incredible community! Your generosity is a wonderful gift, and I want to take a moment to acknowledge and thank you for the vital ways you support the mission and students of IWA.

Our students are at the heart of all we do, and their accomplishments fill us with immense pride. The 2023-2024 school year showcased their: growth, resilience, determination, and grit, even in the face of a rapidly changing world. Our Women of the Word continue to excel academically, spiritually, and personally, embodying our motto: A Life for God - A Heart for Others. We are proud of their achievements and the exceptional faculty and staff who work tirelessly alongside them in the pursuit of excellence.

Here are just a few highlights from this past year at IWA:

We received accreditation from COGNIA, our school accreditation body. We celebrated Mass, conducted retreats, and provided opportunities for sacramental participation, prayer services, the rosary, and adoration.

We engaged Meitler to assist us in developing: a five-year strategic plan, completing focus groups, surveys, individual meetings, and data collection as we await their findings to begin building the plan. We experienced tremendous: academic, athletic, and extracurricular successes, including over $12 million in collegiate scholarships for our graduates, state championships in volleyball, basketball, and track, and a 3rd place Think Award for our robotics team.

This Annual Report is significant, but even more important is the vision each donor has for IWA. Thank you for your dedicated support and generosity. Your commitment has made the education of IWA students a top priority.

Thank you for your love and support yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Because of you, we will continue to educate, encourage, and empower young women to go out into the world and make a difference. Praised be the Incarnate Word! Forever, amen.

With gratitude,

When the women of the Class of 1974 reach their 50-year anniversary since graduating from Incarnate Word Academy, they proudly become Golden Girls. Each fall, IWA welcomes a new class of Golden Girls back to campus as part of the homecoming celebration, creating more unforgettable memories. This special weekend includes a mass with the IWA community, the Homecoming Parade, an Honor Tunnel before the Powder Puff Football game, and a delightful luncheon hosted by the IWA Alumnae Association.

This year, the Class of 1974 embraced the chance to celebrate their golden anniversary with enthusiasm. In addition to participating in the homecoming festivities on September 22, 2024, the class came together on September 20 and 21 for a weekend filled with laughter and camaraderie. “It was an unforgettable weekend! I have so many memories with these amazing women, and it’s incredible to be back and create new ones,” shared Phyllis Abel Timmermann ‘74.

Three State Championships

Incarnate Word Academy has made history this year, securing three prestigious state championships in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. Each team’s journey to victory reflects the dedication, resilience, and talent of our student-athletes and coaching staff showcasing the strength of the IWA community.

Volleyball: Redemption and Triumph

The IWA Volleyball team entered the 2023 season with a burning desire for redemption after a disappointing second-place finish in the previous year’s Missouri Class 4 Girls Volleyball State Tournament. “We knew we didn’t want to feel the same way we did last year, because it was devastating,” admitted Sammi Bergjans ’24. Determined to make their mark, the Red Knights showcased their talents and grit throughout the season.

Ranked third in the STLhighschoolsports.com small school rankings, the Red Knights stormed through the quarterfinals, defeating Lutheran St. Charles in three sets. They faced a tougher challenge in the semifinals against St. Michael the Archangel but triumphed in four sets, setting the stage for a showdown with the Lancers from St. Pius X High School in the finals.

The championship match, held at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau, was a test of skill and determination. Coach Shane Weber noted, “Today was another short speech because it was in their eyes… they were ready.”

The Red Knights jumped to an early lead and maintained their momentum, ultimately securing a 25-15, 25-23,

25-20 victory. Tara Greenberry led the team with 17 kills, while Sammi Bergjans contributed 34 assists.

Reflecting on their triumph, Greenberry said, “Restarting the tradition of winning volleyball state championships is really big!” With an impressive season record of 31-10-1, the Red Knights claimed their 12th state volleyball title, marking the first championship since 2005. This victory transformed their past disappointment into a celebration of resilience and triumph.

Basketball: A Historic Seventh Consecutive Title

The emotional highlight of the year came during the Class 6 state championship game at the Mizzou Arena in Columbia, where the Incarnate Word Academy Basketball team faced Springfield Kickapoo. The Red Knights emerged victorious, winning 53-43 and marking their seventh consecutive state title, extending their winning streak is the longest in the county with an astonishing 131 games.

Congratulations to the IWA Golf team for a strong second place finish in the Class 2 Girls Golf State Championships! Gia Moresi ’25 placed ninth overall with a combined 2-round score of 175. Grace Hebenheimer ’24 placed 12th and Lindsey Salem ’24 tied for 13th place with scores of 180 and 181, respectively.

The victory was particularly poignant, as the team played without their head coach, Dan Rolfes, who had to be hospitalized after a medical emergency. Despite the challenging circumstances, the players demonstrated remarkable poise and determination. Senior Kaylynn Janes opened the game with a quick layup, setting the tone for the Red Knights’ stifling defense, which limited Kickapoo to just 31 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers.

Junior guard Peyton Hill led the scoring with 17 points, while Janes added 16, completing her four year career without a single loss at IWA. Junior Nevaeh Caffey

without a single loss at IWA. Junior Nevaeh Caffey contributed with seven points, ten rebounds and four steals, Coach Rolfes expressed his pride, saying, “I am so proud of all these girls and how they handled the whole situation. It makes me appreciate each title a little bit more.”

Track & Field: Soaring to New Heights

The Incarnate Word Academy Track & Field Team made history as they clinched the title of Class 3 State Champions. With an impressive total of 43 points, the team secured gold medals in the Discus, 4x200 meter Relay, and High Jump events, marking a season filled with remarkable accomplishments. Coach Moses Regular shared his pride, stating, “The dedication and determination of our track team this season have been unparalleled. Their relentless training and unwavering spirit have propelled them to achieve remarkable feats on the track.”

The season was nothing short of extraordinary, as the athletes consistently pursued excellence, breaking personal records and reaching new heights in their performances. Coach Regular emphasized that their hard work raised the bar for the entire program: “The track team has truly exceeded expectations. As their

The sense of camaraderie and teamwork within the track team was palpable, as each member pushed one another to excel. Their success not only earned them accolades but also inspired the IWA community, setting a new standard of excellence for future athletes.

A Year to Remember

This year’s successes in volleyball, basketball, and track and field have united the IWA community in a celebration of talent, hard work, and resilience. These championships not only highlight the incredible achievements of our student-athletes but also the unwavering support of our coaches, families, and alumnae.

As we reflect on these remarkable victories, we are reminded of the spirit of sportsmanship and the bonds formed through teamwork and dedication. Each title earned is a testament to the commitment of our students and the legacy of excellence that defines Incarnate Word Academy.

Looking ahead, we are excited to continue this tradition of success, building on the foundation laid by our championship teams. The achievements of this past year inspire us to aim even higher, encouraging future generations of Red Knights to pursue greatness in all their endeavors.

Together, we celebrate a year filled with unforgettable moments and cherished memories, and we eagerly anticipate the new heights our student athletes and athletic programs will reach in the future. Here’s to the champions of IWA—may their victories inspire us all!

Rising Strong: Coach Dan

In March 2024, the Incarnate Word Academy (IWA) basketball team achieved an extraordinary feat, clinching the Class 6 state championship. This victory, however, was overshadowed by the health crisis faced by their head coach, Dan Rolfes. Following a heart attack after the semifinal game, Coach Rolfes found himself in the hospital, unable to lead his team on the court during the championship game. Yet, despite this adversity, his spirit remained unbroken, and the support from the IWA community turned this story into one of hope and resilience.

A Journey to Championship Glory

Reflecting on the season, Coach Rolfes emphasized the pressure surrounding the team. The Red Knights entered the state championship with an impressive undefeated record, creating high expectations and added scrutiny from media and fans. “There was a little more pressure on the team,” Rolfes admitted, acknowledging the external factors that weighed heavily on their shoulders. However, his primary concern was for the girls to create their own legacy. “I wanted them to feel a part of history,” he said, underscoring his focus on team success over individual accolades.

This emphasis on community and shared goals has long been a hallmark of Rolfes’ coaching philosophy. He explained how the IWA basketball program has evolved over the years, stating, “We do a lot of things differently here, and that’s what separates us.” From fostering a sense of belonging to promoting teamwork, Rolfes has built a program that prioritizes the development of both skilled student athletes and well-rounded individuals.

Coach Dan Rolfes: A Story of Resilence, Community, and Hope

The journey to the championship was not without its challenges. Rolfes recalled the hard work and dedication required from each player. “I always tell the girls, it’s not just about the wins. It’s about the lessons learned along the way,” he stated. These lessons are what shape the character of the players and prepare them for success beyond the basketball court.

Overcoming Adversity

The circumstances surrounding the championship added a layer of complexity. While Rolfes was recovering in the hospital, his players faced the monumental task of competing without their leader. “When I heard they won, it was just a relief,” he recalled. The victory was not just a testament to their skill but also to the strength of the program he had built over the years. “I think a good reflection of a basketball program is when the players take the lead and handle adversity without the coach having to guide them,” he shared.

Dan’s family (Left to Right): Daughter Kate, Wife Lisa, Daughter Grace and Son Jake

In that moment of uncertainty, Rolfes found immense pride in his players’ ability to rise to the occasion. “To see them handle that pressure was amazing,” he stated, highlighting the importance of resilience and leadership in his program. Their performances not only solidified their legacy but also demonstrated the values instilled by Rolfes throughout his coaching career.

When the final buzzer rang, it marked a culmination of hard work, determination, and the collective spirit of the team. Rolfes’ absence from the court became a rallying point for the players, who channeled their emotions into a focused performance. Their victory was a collective achievement, one that transcended the individual contributions of any one player.

A Community United

The support from the IWA community during Rolfes’ recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. From past players and alumnae, past parents to faculty, messages of encouragement poured in, reminding him of the strength of the bonds formed at Incarnate Word. “It was amazing to know how many people were rooting for me,” he reflected. The community rallied around him, offering help and expressing concern, embodying that IWA is not just a school but a family.

Rolfes noted that this experience deepened his connections with the school, as everyone came together to support not just him, but the entire program. “The community is an extension of my family,” he expressed, emphasizing the long-standing relationships he has built over his 25 years at IWA. “Everyone was willing to help, asking, ‘What do you need?’” This spirit of unity exemplifies the strength of the IWA community. The collective support manifested in various forms, from heartfelt messages to organized fundraisers. Families and students came together to create care packages, sending their well wishes directly to Rolfes in the hospital. Such gestures of kindness are not just symbolic; they represent the deep-rooted values of compassion and solidarity that IWA instills in its students.

Messages of Hope

Throughout his recovery, Coach Rolfes embraced a message of hope for others facing challenges. “You have to keep fighting,” he urged, sharing how he set small goals to motivate himself during his healing process. He believes that while obstacles may seem insurmountable, perseverance is key. “It’s going to take time, and it’s not going to be easy, but you have to have faith,” he emphasized.

On March 20, 2024 the Incarnate Word Academy family held a special prayer service for coach Dan Rolfes.
Coach Rolfes during one of his first practices back in the summer of 2024

“I want to see my kids grow up, have grandkids, and keep coaching,” he shared. For Rolfes, the love for basketball and the desire to see his players succeed are powerful motivators. This outlook instills hope not just in him but also in those around him. He understands the weight of responsibility as a coach, realizing that his actions and attitudes can significantly impact his players’ lives.

His journey through recovery has inspired many, as he shares his experience with students and athletes. “When you face a setback, it’s important to remember that it’s just a part of your journey,” he tells them. This philosophy is echoed in the way he conducts practices and interacts with players, always reminding them that resilience and hard work are what lead to success.

Looking Forward

As the next season approaches, Rolfes reflects on the lessons learned during his health scare. He intends to approach coaching with a renewed sense of appreciation. “I need to appreciate the success of our program and the relationships I’ve built,” he said. This sentiment resonates deeply, reminding all of us not to take our accomplishments and connections for granted. Rolfes has expressed his desire to instill this sense of appreciation in his players as well. He plans to emphasize the importance of gratitude in their daily practices, encouraging them to acknowledge not only their achievements but also the support they receive from their teammates, coaches, and the broader community. “When we appreciate what we have, it motivates us to work harder,” he stated.

As he prepares for the upcoming season, Rolfes is also focused on fostering a sense of legacy among his players. He wants them to understand that being part of the IWA basketball program means being part of something greater than themselves. “It’s about leaving a mark, not just for yourself, but for those who come after you,” he emphasized, inspiring the next generation of players to carry forward the values of teamwork, resilience, and community.

A Legacy of Hope

In a world where challenges are inevitable, Coach Dan Rolfes exemplifies the power of community, resilience, and hope. His journey through adversity serves as a reminder that with support, determination, and faith, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. As the IWA family continues to stand by him, the future looks bright for Coach Rolfes and his beloved Red Knights. Together, they embody the spirit of perseverance and unity that defines Incarnate Word Academy. Coach Rolfes’ story is not just one of personal triumph; it is a celebration of the connections that bind a community together. His experiences resonate with anyone who has faced challenges, reinforcing the idea that through adversity, we can find strength, hope, and an unwavering sense of belonging. As IWA prepares for another season, the echoes of resilience will undoubtedly guide them toward future victories, both on and off the court.

“We are excited to kick off an update to our Strategic Plan. Partnering with Meitler, a national Catholic School planning firm, we are developing a survey to ensure our plans are rooted in data and valued input from our constituents.”

It is with great pleasure that I address the IWA community during such an exciting time for our school. This past year was successful and thrilling in numerous ways; from academics to outstanding theater productions, from the athletic fields to launching an update to our Strategic Plan, our Academy is alive and thriving in so many ways.

It had been 13 years since I last attended an IWA graduation ceremony, and I was honored to witness the graduation of our Seniors back in May. The excitement in the faces of the graduates and their families was truly touching. I am proud to share that 100% of our Seniors are going on to college, well-prepared to make their mark in their next chapter of life. Our graduates received $12 in scholarships, which is a testament to the quality of education they received at IWA. Continuing with academics, we successfully completed the accreditation process from Cognia, a global accrediting agency recognized by the Missouri Department of Education and the United States Department of Education. I want to take this opportunity to thank Lauren Keeven, our principal, for her leadership and dedication in achieving this significant milestone. We celebrate our success in gaining accreditation and will stay focused on our journey of continuous improvement to ensure we provide high-quality learning to our students.

It was an absolute joy to watch the fantastic theater productions this year in our renovated theater. The students delivered excellent performances and quality stage designs, enhanced by comfortable new seating and upgraded lighting and sound systems.

Our athletic program also experienced tremendous success this year, capturing state titles in volleyball, basketball, and track—our first state championship in track and field. We also placed 2nd in golf, our highest placement in history. It was a great year to be a Red Knight! Our community came together like never before in support of Dan Rolfes, our Basketball Coach and Athletic Director, during a major medical emergency he faced during the state tournament. The outpouring of prayers and love provided the strength Dan needed on his road to recovery.

We are excited to kick off an update to our Strategic Plan. Partnering with Meitler, a national Catholic school planning firm, we are developing a survey to ensure our plans are rooted in data and valued input from our constituents. Regularly reviewing and analyzing all areas of school life is a standard part of our process, helping us to think strategically about: resources, facilities, programs, budgets, and long-term plans to best serve our evolving student population. Meitler is scheduled to complete their data analysis and recommendations in November, and our Strategic Planning Committee will use this information to update our plan. We will keep you informed as plans progress.

On behalf of the IWA Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to present our 2023-2024 Annual Report, representing our financial health and the outcomes of our fundraising efforts as of June 30, 2024. Our financial position remains strong as we continue the legacy of the Sisters and all those who came before us.

Along with the other members of the Board of Trustees, we hope the coming year brings you many blessings and continued good health. We remain focused on the opportunities ahead and are ever grateful for your support. God bless you and your families.

Praised be the Incarnate Word! Forever, Amen.
