CELEBRATING 27 YEARS OF DAIRY EXCELLENCE South Gippsland Dairy & Farming Expo Returns to Korumburra Wednesday 2nd & Thursday 3rd September 2026 The Strzelecki Lions Club is proud to announce the return of the South Gippsland Dairy & Farming Expo, celebrating its 27th year of showcasing the latest products, technology, services and innovations supporting Australia’s dairy and farming industries. Held at the Korumburra Showgrounds on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd September, the Expo continues to bring together farmers, industry professionals, exhibitors and rural communities from across Victoria for two days of learning, networking and fun. With dozens of exhibitors from across Australia, visitors will have the opportunity to compare products, explore new technologies, discover innovative farming solutions and speak directly with the people behind the industry’s leading brands. It’s a unique opportunity to see so much of the dairy and agricultural sector in one place, over two action-packed days. For almost three decades, the Dairy Expo has become one of Gippsland’s premier agricultural events, with funds raised contributing more than $650,000 back into the local community through Lions projects and community initiatives. What began as a local initiative has grown into one of Victoria’s most respected regional agricultural events, attracting visitors from right across Gippsland and beyond while continuing to support local community projects through the Lions Club of Strzelecki. New for 2026 – The Dairy Expo Clearing Sale One of the major highlights for 2026 is the introduction of the inaugural Dairy Expo Clearing Sale, proudly sponsored by Nutrien Ag Solutions. For many years, respected local dairy farmer Graeme Lancey dreamed of bringing a farm equipment clearing sale to the Expo. This year, his vision becomes reality. Commencing at 10.30am on Wednesday 2nd September, Clearing Sale will Distributorthe of Shell Products feature a range of quality farm equipment,

machinery and rural items, with all proceeds supporting the Gardiner Foundation New Zealand Study Tour. In Graeme’s own words: “Stop Thinking. Join the Action!” Whether you are looking for a bargain or simply wanting to support a great cause, everyone is encouraged to come along and help celebrate Graeme’s legacy. If you have any quality farm equipment, then please contact our event secretary. From machinery, equipment and farming essentials, every item sold will help invest in the future of our dairy industry through the Gardiner Foundation New Zealand Study Tour. Breakfast with the Dairy Legends Another exciting addition this year is the Dairy Legends Breakfast, proudly supported by the Look over the Farm Gate Grant and South Gippsland Shire Council. Held from 8.00am on Thursday 3rd September, the breakfast will bring together farmers, service providers and industry friends for a relaxed morning of conversation, connection and plenty of laughs. Guests will also enjoy a unique live auction featuring one-of-a-kind caricatures of well-known dairy personalities, with proceeds again supporting the Gardiner Foundation New Zealand Study Tour. More than just breakfast, it’s an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues, celebrate the people who make our dairy industry so special, and start the day with plenty of laughter before heading into another full day at the Expo. Places are limited, and bookings are essential, so phone 0419 878 055. Research shows the value of good dairy shelter management Australian-first research has shown how farmers can effectively manage dairy shelters and compost barns in the local environment, leading to a wide range of benefits. PhD candidate Andrew Lean told a field day hosted at Panmure by Dairy Shelters Australia on August 3 that more farmers are turning to compost barns and open-sided, clear-roofed, deep-litter shelters. As part his research into optimising intensive dairy production in Australia, Mr Lean spent 15 weeks visiting compost barns measuring bedding temperatures, moisture levels and carbon to nitrogen ratios. He said the shelters not only benefit cows, they help to protect paddocks and laneways. “They are important additions to farm infrastructure. If you have a shelter, you’re going to get a lot of benefits in terms of cow management, laneway management because the cows are
only entering pasture once a day, and you don’t pug paddocks and destroy grass. “They’re not just for giving cows somewhere warm and clean to lie, you also get benefits that may not be so obvious.” Mr Lean, from Scibus and Charles Sturt University, said his research was promoted by the increase in shelters and compost barns across Australia. “We need to understand them in an Australian context,” he said. “There is a lot of American and European research but we have very different systems.” Mr Lean said both fully-stocked compost barns and partially stocked open-sided, clear-roofed, deep-litter shelters could have huge benefits to farms. “With the clear-roof system, you get a benefit in terms of drying on the surface,” he said. “If you can increase the temperature in your environment, which these clearspanned roofs do, you get a definite benefit in
terms of drying the bedding and increasing the bedding temperature. “These systems are well suited to colder, wetter environments in southern Australia though they can also be modified with shade and cooling to be suitable for summer in hotter climates. There is good natural airflow in these sheds.” Mr Lean said the key to good management was “to remember this is cow bedding, not compost”. “If you get too obsessed with just managing it as compost, you can fall into traps of looking at temperature instead of just making sure it is dry enough. “You have to stop moisture entering the pack and keep the moisture below 55 per cent year-round so the bedding doesn’t stick to the cows. This will decrease the risk of mastitis developing, it’s better for cow comfort and will stop them becoming dirty and you will get the best welfare and production benefits.” At the field day, Mr Lean demonstrated a ball test that farmers could use to measure moisture.
He added that the bedding must be cultivated. “You have to turn it regularly and don’t rush the process because increased cultivating time increases bedding temperature,” he said. Farmers need to rip the flooring deep enough with a chisel plough to bring the bedding to the surface and allow the airflow to remove moisture, and then use a rotor tiller to break up clumps in the bedding. Mr Lean said farmers were getting much better at managing shelters. “When I started the PhD, there was still a lot of trial and error. Over the past four or five years, in general there has been a massive jump in management quality and it keeps getting better and better.” More than 50 people attended the field day at the Panmure farm of Simon and Pip Rea which is home to several Dairy Shelters Australia shelters. Jantec Systems, Australia’s leading supplier of electronic ID systems Many farmers underestimate the importance of the accuracy of the electronic ID system in rotary and herringbone dairies. In rotary dairies the Jantec ID system is unique in that it exceeds the accuracy of its nearest competitors by magnitudes. This is very important for feeding and other cow-in-bail dependent functions, like milk metering, and pregnancy testing. As an example, if the ID system is not accurate there is no point putting in milk meters, otherwise the animal will be assigned the wrong volume. As well as being accurate, the Jantec ID system is by far the most cost-effective system available and includes easy to use herd management software that is continuously being enhanced. All of Jantec’s ID systems use NLIS ear tags. On rotary and herringbone dairies the animals are identified as they enter the platform and the operator is alerted via voice message and coloured text on a computer screen to such markers as calvings, matings, pregnancy tests, treatments, and groups. Feed is controlled to each animal according to the schedule set. Jantec Systems has integrated
with various inline sensors such as milk meters which can measure volume, fat, protein, lactose, conductivity, and milking rates, and cell count meters which measure the SCC. From the data collected, the powerful reports generated are extremely useful for management decision-making. It allows farmers to make more informed, faster, and effective decisions, and allows for continuous herd improvement.
The company’s electronic herd identification system can integrate with many heat detection systems, saving time on observations and lifting fertility rates. The Jantec phone app displays animal information and allows for alerts, events, and drafts to be entered, as well as featuring other unique options. Jantec Systems will be on site at the South Gippsland Dairy Expo.

Evans Petroleum has been delivering fuel to Gippsland farms and businesses since 1970. What started as a small distributorship in Leongatha, founded by Reginald Evans, has quietly grown into one of the region’s most relied-upon family businesses. Today, the business runs a fleet of around 30 trucks delivering bulk fuel to farms and commercial operations across Gippsland. For farmers, it means one less thing to worry about. Fuel arrives when you need it, so you can get on with the job. Sales Manager John Schelling puts it simply. “We’re putting fuel on the farm tank for Dad, and fuel in the car for Mum at our BP sites.”
See you at the South Gippsland Dairy and Farming Expo September 2&3 Page 4 South Gippsland Dairy Expo 2026
With 17 BP service stations across the region and a new site recently opened in Johnsonville, Evans continues to grow where Gippsland needs it most. Reggie’s, named in honour of the founder, has become a familiar stop for farmers and tradies looking for good coffee, a healthy feed and a friendly face. You’ll find Evans Petroleum at the South Gippsland Dairy and Farming Expo on 2 and 3 September. Stop by and have a chat with the team about how they can take the hassle out of fuel for your farm or business.

How do you financially prepare to leave the farm? For many farmers, leaving the farm or handing over its day-to-day operations, is one of the most significant financial and emotional decisions they’ll ever be faced with. Whether driven by planned retirement, succession, health concerns or changing economic circumstances - a successful transition requires careful planning well before the gate finally closes or before the reins are passed on. Not every transition means moving away. Many farmers choose to stay on the land they’ve worked for decades, while the next generation takes over the day-to-day operation. Whether you leave the farm entirely or remain in place while operations change hands, the underlying financial questions are typically the same. The first step is understanding what life after farming will cost. Many farmers spend decades reinvesting profits back into land, machinery and livestock, often at the expense of building personal wealth outside the business. Developing a realistic retirement budget helps determine whether the proceeds from selling or transferring farm assets, or the income arrangement negotiated with the
next generation will be enough to support future living expenses. The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) have great resources to get you started with your likely income needs in retirement. Succession planning with plenty of lead in time is critical, as passing a farm to the next generation can be complicated and nuanced. This is especially true when the outgoing generation intends to remain on the farm; clear agreements about living arrangements, decision-making authority and financial support help prevent friction once operational control has changed hands. Open communication is pivotal, supported by a team of professional advisors, can help ensure all voices are heard, prevent misunderstandings and promote the fair distribution of assets while preserving the viability of the farm. Tax considerations should never be overlooked. The sale or transfer of farming assets, even a partial transfer of operations while retaining the family home or a share of the land, may trigger capital gains tax, stamp duty implications or affect eligibility for government benefits.
Early planning can uncover strategies to minimise unnecessary tax, preserve the family wealth and maximise retirement outcomes for the parties winding down. Finally, remember that this transition is not just a financial event; it is a lifestyle change. Even if you stay in the same house, your role, routine and relationship to the farm will shift once someone else is making the operational decisions. A well-considered transition plan should address housing security, healthcare, and other unforeseen costs, while also creating opportunities for the person stepping back to build social connections, pursue personal goals and bucket list items, and consider how they want to spend their time once they are no longer running the show. No matter what, the best time to prepare is years before you intend to do it. A proactive approach, coupled with a specialist team of Agri professionals can help ensure the next chapter is financially Jayden Allison CFP MFinPlan, BCom secure and personally rewarding for all (Eco&Fin), Dip. Controlled suckling has numerous health benefits. Feeding speed is a vital but often overlooked factor in calf rearing. When calves drink too quickly, they miss many of the biological benefits of natural suckling.
Why controlled milk flow matters for calf health and growth Feeding speed is a vital but often overlooked factor in calf rearing. When calves drink too quickly, they miss many of the biological benefits of natural suckling. Nutritional Diarrhoea Milk must clot properly in the abomasum for nutrients and lactose to be digested and absorbed. When clotting is poor, excess lactose passes into the intestines, providing an ideal food source for pathogens such as E. coli and increasing the risk of nutritional diarrhoea. Natural suckling encourages saliva production which helps create the right conditions for strong curd formation. Fast milk intake reduces saliva, weakens clotting and allows poorly digested milk to enter the intestines. Cross-Suckling Calves are born with a strong suckling instinct. When feeding from the cow, milk flows slowly, giving the brain time to register satiety and switch off the suckling drive.
With fast-feeding systems, such as open buckets or high-flow teats, calves finish drinking before this instinct is satisfied, leading to cross-suckling. Average Daily Gain To utilise milk energy, calves must digest and absorb lactose and nutrients effectively. Rapid milk delivery compromises the digestive processes, so calves fail to capture the full value of the nutrients. A natural drinking speed leads to better nutrient utilisation and improves ADG. Feeding with controlled flow Milk Bar Teats support the calf ’s natural functions and encourages saliva production, supports healthy digestion and nutrient absorption, reduces the risk of nutritional diarrhoea and cross-suckling, and helps calves achieve better growth and performance. Why existing robot farms keep investing One trend has stood out to Lely Center Gippsland owner Greg Cole over the past 18 months. Despite some tough seasons and uncertainty across the dairy industry, existing robot farmers aren’t slowing down. Dairy, explains: “This wasn’t our first shed with Bairnsdale Engineering. After seeing the difference quality makes, we knew we wanted to build this one properly from the start. The Bairnsdale team were always accommodating, taking the time to work through the finer details of the design and make sure everything was exactly where it needed to be.” Whether it’s a dairy, machinery shed, hay shed, free-stall barn or custom agricultural infrastructure, every project reflects the same values that have guided Bairnsdale Engineering for generations, quality workmanship, practical solutions and genuine local service. Visit Bairnsdale Engineering at Site 39 at this year’s South Gippsland Dairy Expo. We look forward to discussing your next farm shed or agricultural infrastructure project.
As livestock producers continue to focus on maximising forage utilisation and animal performance, the importance of producing high-quality silage has never been greater. With changing seasonal conditions and increasing pressure on farm profitability, preserving valuable nutrients at harvest is essential. For more than 40 years, Alltech has delivered innovative animal nutrition and health solutions to farmers around the world, helping producers improve productivity and profitability through science-backed technologies. One such innovation is Egalis Ferment, Alltech’s advanced silage inoculant designed specifically for modern livestock production systems. Silage remains one of the most effective ways to preserve surplus forage that cannot be utilised through grazing alone. Whether supporting dairy, beef or sheep enterprises, quality silage provides a reliable feed source during periods when pasture availability is limited, particularly through summer and dry conditions. Australian producers continue to invest in improved harvesting equipment, storage infrastructure and silage-making practices to capture more value from their forage crops. However, successful silage production still depends heavily on environmental conditions at harvest, with weather variability often presenting significant challenges. The key to effective silage preservation lies in a rapid and efficient primary fermentation.
This process helps lock in nutrients, maintain feed quality and ensure livestock have access to highly digestible forage when it matters most. Egalis Ferment has been developed to support this critical stage of silage production. Featuring carefully selected strains of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus, the inoculant promotes a fast and efficient fermentation, helping preserve more of the crop’s original nutritional value. By accelerating the drop in silage pH, Egalis Ferment assists in protecting valuable dry matter and nutrients, ultimately supporting greater feed quality at feed-out. The result is silage that helps livestock maintain intake and performance, contributing to improved milk production and meat yield. Backed by decades of research and practical experience in forage conservation, Egalis Ferment combines proven bacterial technology with convenient storage and application systems, making it a valuable tool for producers seeking consistent silage performance. As another silage season approaches, ensuring every tonne of conserved forage delivers maximum nutritional value can make a significant difference to the productivity of your livestock enterprise. For more information about Alltech Egalis Ferment, contact Donal Blackwell on 0408 377 304.

Sustainable farm solutions with Verdyn

Sustainable Farm Solutions began its story in 1994 when Paul and Ellie Cox set out to find a better way to care for their livestock. Talking tech and getting on farm with local Gippsland Farm Insurance specialist Jacob Last Ahead of this year’s South Gippsland Dairy Expo, we caught up with local Gippsland Achmea Farm Insurance Specialist Jacob Last. Jacob runs cattle on his property near Churchill and spends much of his time visiting farming businesses across the region. He shares what he’s hearing from local farmers and why getting out on farm helps him better understand each farming business. What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you? I have a small farm of my own near Churchill where we run cattle on about 80 acres. This keeps me close to the day-to-day realities of farming, from managing stock and pasture to dealing with seasonal pressures. It gives me a practical perspective when I’m out speaking with farmers. What’s one conversation you’re having more often with farmers today than you were five years ago? Everyone’s a lot more budget focused. More conversations are about finding practical ways to manage cost pressures, make things work while still protecting what they’ve built. Lower costs. Secure power. One bill
Debondt Battery Room. REDEI help dairy farms reduce energy risk without upfront capital. Energy has become one of the biggest challenges facing modern dairy farms. Rising electricity prices, unreliable networks, increasing outages, poor power quality and the growing demand for automation are placing unprecedented pressure on farm profitability. Surge and Redei have launched a completely new Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) specifically for Australian dairy farms to solve these problems. Rather than simply selling solar or batteries, we become your long-term energy partner. We design, fund, install, own, monitor, and maintain a complete on-farm energy system tailored to your dairy’s operations, combining solar, battery storage, smart controls, backup generation (where required), and seamless integration with the existing electricity network. We take full responsibility and support for up to ten years and beyond. The result is lower, more predictable energy costs, improved power reliability, greater resilience, and one simple monthly bill, all without any upfront capital investment. Simply move your energy bill over to Surge. Our approach removes the complexity of managing multiple energy providers and technologies, giving farmers a single partner responsible for performance, service and
long-term support. Whether you’re expanding your dairy, operating on a constrained SWER network, looking to reduce diesel consumption, improving power quality or simply wanting greater certainty over your energy costs, Energy as a Service is designed to help your farm operate more efficiently and confidently into the future. You milk the cows. We look after the energy. Energy as a Service. Built for Dairy. Visit us at the Elevate Dairy Innovator Showcase.
