When senior Jessie Osuna-Mondragón left for college, she was nervous about leaving home and figuring out what to do with her life. An internship with Multnomah County doing community outreach opened Jessie’s eyes to the ways that she could use her passion to help others, her Latina heritage, and her liberal arts education to make Portland a better place for families in need.

“Not only did this internship improve my professional skills, it also helped me realize my true potential as a scholar and leader in the community. Likewise, being a Latina gave me the opportunity to communicate with Spanish speaking families; helping them access vital resources that they need to flourish.

Welcome to The Bridge!

As you read this magazine, we hope you will feel empowered to take the next step in your educational journey. Choosing which college or university you will attend involves more than just finding the right major or figuring out which friend would make the best roommate. As you weigh your options, you will discover that your choice is also a primary factor in setting you on the path toward who you will become. With this in mind, I want to take a moment to explain why I think choosing to pursue a liberal arts degree will help you flourish, no matter where life takes you.

Liberal arts colleges share many characteristics: • small campus and intimate class size • students engaged in service and inquiry both in and out of the classroom • a faculty that creates a climate of serious discourse • appreciation of lifelong learning as a way to enhance personal and professional growth

The value of a liberal arts education extends far beyond job attainment or job placement. It opens wide the door to learning, exploration, creativity, and faith. Liberal arts education creates a learning community that supports change, growth, and diversity.

With all of the cultural and technological influences in our rapidly changing world, it is easy to become disoriented and lose hope.

As a Christ-centered liberal arts college, Warner Pacific instills hope through the integration of faith and praxis, or the process through which we live out our faith. Through our dialogue, through our research and inquiry, and through our service, we bring a message of hope to the world. We collectively say that God matters, humans matter, Creation matters… you and your future matter.

My liberal arts education has helped me be at home with my God, myself, and my world. As a lifelong learner, I have come to know that this call to make a difference in the world through liberal arts education was not designed to build up a religious resume, but to build a robust life of faith.

What you do on campus: I'm the Head Resident Assistant (RA), which means I help make sure that students who live in the dorms are happy, comfortable, and safe. I also work at the Office of Student Affairs, and I'm the campus Videographer for the Marketing Department.

Interesting facts about you: I absolutely love Pokémon (which you probably already know if you’ve ever met me in real life) and I'm terrified of cotton balls.

What’s the atmosphere like at Warner Pacific?

What things can a student do at college other than school work?

College seems really expensive. How do students afford it? Is it hard to get scholarships?

- Michelle, Klamath Falls, Oregon It's not hard to get scholarships, it's just time consuming. Most students don't want to take the time to do the tedious tasks to get scholarships, but that just leaves more room for those who are willing to put in the effort to get them. There are many ways to pay for college ranging from work study to a parent plus loan and everything in between.

There is always something you can apply for, you just have to be willing to ask for help. One of the great things about WP is that our financial services staff are really friendly and they are great at helping you find solutions that you wouldn’t have even thought of!

There are a lot of different vibes on campus, in one night you could be cheering at a volleyball game against our rivals, singing with a band at Night of Worship, or hanging out with friends and watching movies in your dorm.

But there is one common theme with all of the events and that's community. You will feel at home here and you will not feel forgotten.

What makes Warner Pacific special when compared to other schools?

- Karena, Montclair, California Warner Pacific is so unique because though we are small, we have a lot of heart. The thing that I love the most is that I'm not just a number on this campus as I would be at a bigger university. The staff and faculty here at WP care about where you have come from and where you want to go.

Wherever you’re at in your life when you get here, they’re ready to walk with you and they’re always more than happy to make time to meet with you for any reason.

More Than Dollars and Cents: Finding Value in the Liberal Arts

By Kathy Covey Whether you're looking for an academic challenge, planning for the perfect job, or just plain suffering from senioritis, it's fun to daydream of the glorious freedom you’ll experience after graduation. Unfortunately, you’ve still got some big decisions on the horizon, decisions that are sure to shape your future. Answers to “what major will I choose?” and “how am I going to pay for this?” play a huge role in determining where you’ll continue your educational journey.

A liberal arts education makes a person interesting, well-rounded, and ultimately a good employee.

As you think about your future, remember that experts believe a liberal arts education is still the best place to start your career. According to U.S. News & World Report (September 22, 2014), “employers readily identify the creative, communicative, and problem-solving acumen traditionally associated with liberal arts majors as the most valuable attributes of new hires.”

I know it’s hard to imagine now, but before you retire, it’s likely that you will make five to seven career adjustments and change jobs about every 4.4 years, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The ability to write and reason well is vital for your success. And that’s just what you will gain through your experiences and scholastic work at liberal arts colleges like Warner Pacific.

What is the benefit of a liberal arts education?

A liberal arts education prepares you to deal with challenges, diversity, and change. It provides you with broad knowledge as well as in-depth study in a specific area of interest, and develops a sense of social responsibility. Liberal arts grads aren’t pigeon-holed into one career path; they work in every industry from tech to health care.

In fact, Warner Pacific alumni can be found in the executive offices of an international digital design firm, heading non-profit organizations making positive impacts on local communities, leading medical research to improve the health of athletes, and using the legal system to advocate for the rights of vulnerable people.

“My liberal arts education was not intended to train me to a specific job, but more so it prepared me with an invaluable set of skills,” explains recent WP graduate José Cazares ‘15. “Leadership, organization, and the ability to learn in diverse environments will launch me into the next step of my professional career.”

Former Head of Special Initiatives at Google, Inc., Chris Sacca, recently tweeted out to his over 1.6 million followers: “As a humanities major, I believe deeply in the power of the diverse perspectives that a liberal arts degree brings.” @sacca

How will I pay for it?

Choosing a college today takes more than just finding one with the area of study you want to pursue, it is also about making wise financial decisions that include looking at all funding options. Studies show that diverse students and first-generation students are better served at small, private colleges that focus on building relationships. That kind of personalized education does come at a cost, and at first glance, it may seem like a hefty price tag.

The sticker shock of looking at private college tuition can be overwhelming. However, you may not know that private institutions often have significantly more scholarship opportunities available to offset that cost. And if you’re worried about navigating through the financial aid process, remember that at a small institution, you’ll have access to a financial aid counselor who will know your story and be able to provide sound advice to you and your family.

“I come from a high school where my

counselor didn’t think I could graduate. It is a different feeling here,” explains sophomore Raymond Ontiveros ‘18, a transfer from Portland Community College. “WP’s professors have a genuine passion about educating students to become passionate leaders themselves; giving as much attention as needed for their students’ success. That's why I believe this college is right for me!”

WP senior Ricki Ruiz ‘16 recounts, “I came from a high school with a graduating class of 524 students. Coming to a smaller college was one of the best decisions I made. The teacher to student ratio is amazing. I enjoy the one-on-one attention I can get from my professors, the fellowship of my friends when we participate in events, and the great opportunities to get involved in and out of campus.”

“A liberal arts education is the best preparation for many careers, especially in the U.S., given today's global technologydriven economy,” remarks Fareed Zakaria, author of In the Defense of a Liberal Arts Education. “Teach people how to think, write, and communicate; those skills remain useful through the many twists and turns of a career in today's ever-changing digital economy.”

Reflecting on a pivotal moment, recent graduate Quincy Jones ‘15, remembers a remark by Dr. Terrell, Professor of Physical Science, in an organic chemistry lecture, “Everything we learn in the classroom is meant to prepare us, not for the test, but for the lives we want to lead.” Jones, who is now on the road to earning his dentistry degree, was changed by that simple quote. As his view on the purpose of education began to shift, he was able to find real-world applications in all his classes.

Heather Phillips ‘06 works at City Crossroads Ministry in San Francisco, leading a non-profit that is making huge strides in providing hope and support to children and teens who face significant challenges when trying to reach their full potential.

“Today, when I think about finding myself at the helm of this ministry, I am so incredibly thankful for the way Warner Pacific prepared me to view life not as a set of simple black and white circumstances or problems to be fixed,” shares Phillips. “Instead, I see the world as an interdependent community; messy and complicated but full of beauty, where we all have a place.”

First-Year Learning Communities: Education Beyond the Classroom by Melody Burton There’s a mist in the air as the autumn sunset bathes Portland in shades of rose and violet. The reflections of bridges flicker across the Willamette River as the twinkling lights of downtown skyscrapers begin to dot the skyline.

A group of young people wander through a pod of food carts, scoping out the various menus. The rich smells of basil, cumin, lemongrass, and vinegarlaced BBQ sauce all mix together as each one brings their chosen meal to a group of benches. As the meals are eaten, stories are shared about famous family recipes as the diners experience exotic new flavors. Questions about where the food was purchased leads the group into discussions about the ethics of food sourcing, the struggle of eating well in the midst of poverty, and thoughts on how what we eat in Portland effects communities around the globe.

Not far away, another group walks along the west side of the Standard Insurance Center, on their way to see a play. Noticing a round, bronze sculpture lovingly called, “the onion ring,” they stop to learn more about this public art piece.

Getting closer, they discover the artist, Hilda Morris, was once considered Oregon’s greatest sculptor. Ring of Time, the work’s official title, is a twisting circle, epitomizing the love of natural forms that defined much of Morris’ work. Reportedly inspired by the Mobius strip, the sculpture sparks deep conversations that encompass ideas of art, inspiration, science, and how we understand the world around us.

On the other side of the river, a third group is listening to the heartbreaking journey of women who have escaped the vicious cycle of human trafficking. Over paper cups of warm coffee, stories are shared, friendships are formed, and the seeds of advocacy begin to grow. As they leave, the group begins to imagine what they could do to help end slavery. What begins as a simple idea to talk about it to their friends expands into a journey that will take them from raising campus awareness, to engaging the Portland City Council and lobbying for positive change in our community.

While these scenarios may not sound like typical college classes, they are real snapshots of the interactive and relational educational environment that we have become known for.

Welcome to First-Year Learning Communities (FYLCs) at Warner Pacific College.

BENDING TRADITION The idea of what college should look like is beginning to shift. Traditionally, students spend most of their classroom time extracting knowledge from second hand sources like text books and professors. Learning happens on a set schedule, with trigonometry from 2:00-2:50 pm and ethics from 3:003:50 pm.

Lecture halls filled with note-taking students, reading thick textbooks while listening to a lone professor may work for some but many of today’s college students are seeking something more collaborative.

For students who excel in a more traditional model, college is often a simple step up to the next level. The work may be a bit more complex but the learning strategy remains the same; listen, take notes, study, test your knowledge. However, for many students, more interactive learning strategies are needed to ensure academic success. That’s where FYLCs come in.

THE CITY AS YOUR CLASSROOM In addition to supporting students and faculty, FYLCs also help Warner Pacific better reflect its urban identity. “In order to engage the city, First-Year Learning Communities are designing exciting new courses that connect students through an issue or topic relevant to Portland,” explains Jessie Thompson, Director of Learning Communities for the College. “Using the city as a classroom, curiosity is cultivated through question-based curriculum with faculty and peer mentors.”

These learning activities extend outside the traditional classroom settings and focus on issues of transitioning to college, finding social support, developing study skills, and community-building. Students are in at least one other class together in the same semester or in classes linked thematically across semesters, weaving a strong network of support. Warner Pacific’s mission statement is the framework of this model as students explore four themes: Christ-centered, urban, liberal arts, diverse.

“What we’re doing here is more than just trying out new teaching methods,” reflects Dr. Timothy Peterson, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning. “Through First-Year Learning Communities, Warner Pacific is seeking to redefine what it means to be urban. For too long, people

have associated urban with words like ‘decay’. But here we are, saying that urban is positive, a word rich with life; our city is a place where meaningful collaborations spark the creative thinking that deeply impacts our city and our world.”

WHAT’S NEW IN FYLCS? • Students in FYLCs have been exploring real-life questions about fair housing, equitable food justice, human trafficking, wage theft, music and the arts, gentrification, environmental justice, voices of oppression, InDesign and print culture, and wellness in the city.

• The FYLC program began three years ago with only two FYLCs and now we have grown to welcome every incoming freshman into the FYLC program!

• Every FYLC is led by a dedicated team of two professors and two upper-class peer mentors.

• A first during the 2015-2016 academic year, all FYLCs will be offered during the same time slot. This allows more freedom for freshmen to choose an FYLC that interests them rather than being limited to the one that fits into their schedule.

• The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) opened last year and is a dynamic new space that houses the program’s administrative leadership as well as meeting and classroom space in a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere.— Ben Irwin ‘15

Turning the Tables WITH AN AVERAGE CLASS SIZE OF JUST 14 STUDENTS, getting to know your professors is a natural part of every course at Warner Pacific!

We’re helping you start off on the right foot by turning the tables on our faculty and asking them the hard questions.

Beth DuPriest, Ph.D. Chair, Department of Natural Sciences and Health and Associate Professor of Biology; Affiliate Scientist at the Center for Developmental Health/ Knight Cardiovascular Institute at Oregon Health & Science University WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF RESEARCH AND HOW IS IT BEING USED OUT IN THE WORLD? My research helps people understand how a mother’s diet affects the way her kids grow, and how healthy they will be. We are learning about a hormone that fat tissue makes called adiponectin, and how it can be affected by your mom’s diet before you were born.

DO STUDENTS EVER PARTICIPATE IN YOUR RESEARCH? IF SO, HOW DO YOU CHOOSE STUDENT RESEARCHERS? I have a few students help with my research every year. I choose students based on how well they do in classes, how good their skills are in the labs, how well they can organize information, what they want to do after college, and whether they seem like they will be good team members. Students who do research with me are usually interested in either healthcare or research careers; some aren’t sure when they begin, but spending time doing realworld research can help them figure it out.

WHAT’S UNIQUE ABOUT STUDYING BIOLOGY AT WARNER PACIFIC? Studying biology at Warner Pacific means that you have small classes with professors who get to know you well and who are able to help you when you struggle. We have upper division courses with unique lab opportunities that most other colleges don’t have, and instructors with ties to both of the medical schools in Oregon. We are the only Biological Science program in Oregon that has a Human Biology emphasis, specifically designed for pre-healthcare students to earn a biology degree

while getting ready for the next step. Our curriculum emphasizes physiology more than most programs do; physiology is the science of how a whole organism (or whole person) works.

HOW DOES YOUR FAITH INFORM YOUR TEACHING AND RESEARCH? My faith is the reason that I have chosen to work at Warner Pacific. I see serving students here as my mission, and I am happy to work in a place where I can talk honestly about my faith with my students and my colleagues. That doesn’t mean I teach a religious version of science...I am a Christian who is a scientist. And at Warner Pacific, that’s welcome. We embrace things that seem to be paradoxes, and to much of the world, that’s exactly what a Christianwho-is-a-scientist is.

WHAT ARE STUDENTS SURPRISED TO LEARN IN YOUR CLASSES? I’m going to be honest: my students are surprised at how much I expect of them in my courses – at first.

But then, after some hard work and getting help from me, friends, and tutors, they are surprised again to learn that with a solid work ethic and the right support, they can accomplish what I’ve asked them to do.

Speakers from around the world, lively gospel-driven music, relevant up-to-date campus news, or a comedian’s punchline – you can experience a new adventure at each chapel service!

Whether you’re hoping to grow closer to God, fulfill your chapel requirement, or just enjoy the company of friends, you will find a place in chapel. Our Christ-centered program, is an opportunity for you to get together on a regular basis with students, staff, faculty, and guests for renewal, reflection, encouragement, and true community – even if you are not a Christian.

Imagine walking into McGuire Auditorium, maybe you’re a little late on this day, tired from just waking up or nervous about a big assignment due in two weeks. As your eyes begin to scan the room for a seat in the packed auditorium, you feel the beat of the music filling the atmosphere and see a smile from a familiar face inviting you to sit next to them. Students are singing on stage, a friend is on the drums, a classmate is running the lines of his spoken word poem, and another is stretching out to get ready for her dance performance – the room is filled with energy.

Just the Facts ▪ Yes, chapel is required; all students enrolled in 12 or more credit hours are expected to participate in the Faith and Service Commitment Program ▪ If you live on campus, you are required to attend 15 chapels each semester (roughly half of the chapels offered) and complete 10 service hours each semester ▪ If you commute, you are required to have a combination of chapels and service hours that equal 25 hours for each semester, with a minimum of 5 chapels and 5 service hours ▪ Chapel meets in McGuire Auditorium every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00-10:50 am, most campus offices are closed and no classes take place during chapel ▪ Once your chapel requirements are fulfilled, or if you’re choosing to skip a chapel, you may decide to “rest your eyes”, knock out some homework, study for a test you are anticipating, or fuel up with a snack or a drink from Tabor Grind For more info on the Faith and Service Commitment, check out warnerpacific.edu/ faith-and-service.

Fast forward as you are inspired and challenged by the encouraging words of the speaker as she shares her personal journey with faith and life and everything in between. As the service comes to an end, everyone who wants to is invited to receive prayer and you recognize the student chaplain from one of your classes. You’re nervous about going forward, prayer isn’t usually your thing, but with the stress of your big assignment deadline still looming, you feel like you should and you do. In addition to prayer, you’re offered words of encouragement, a gentle hug, and a tip that one of the tutors in the Academic Success Center would be a great resource to help get that assignment on track.

Chapel comes to a close and you leave McGuire Auditorium.

You walked in alone, tired or nervous, but you leave joyful with a reminder that you are a part of something special – a Christcentered and supportive community.

When Warner Pacific students crave a good old Portland adventure, the only real issue is narrowing down the choices. This city is like a delightful dream.

Almost every street, bridge, corner, hill, and tree offers a beautiful spot to hang-out. The best part is that you can find so many free or low-cost activities all over the city of Portland and most are within just minutes of the WP campus.

Portland is more than hipsters and VooDoo Doughnuts (although we’ve got plenty of both). This enchanting city is easy to navigate on foot, by bike, or by public transportation.

The backdrop of Mt. Hood, the trees bursting with color, and the (fairly frequent) soft mist of rain makes this a perfect destination to study and explore.

We’re More Than Just Hipsters!

Here are seven must-see destinations during your fall semester in Portland.

Grab a few friends or classmates and take a stroll along the Tom McCall Waterfront Park on a crisp, autumn day. Enjoy the explosive colors and changing leaves. Go on a Saturday or Sunday and you’ll stumble upon locally handmade arts, crafts, and foods from throughout the Pacific Northwest at the Portland Saturday Market. Saturday Market is recognized as the largest continuously operating open-air arts and crafts market in the country! The Market is open every weekend until Christmas Eve and it’s a great place to pick up souvenirs or special gifts to bring home for the holidays.

If you need a little pick-me-up or you’re looking for a post-meal treat, take a short walk from the waterfront over to Stella Caffe on 5th Avenue, and order the Affogato, the perfect blend of gelato and espresso. Delicious Stella Caffe coffees can also be enjoyed at Tabor Bread, less than a mile and a half away from the Warner Pacific campus.

The closest bridge to the College is the Hawthorne. The oldest vertical lift bridge in the country, the Hawthorne Bridge is one of the busiest in Portland, carrying more than 30,000 vehicles and 8,000 bicycles per day! Getting there gives you the chance to explore Portland’s Hawthorne District where you can find dessert shops, unique retail stores, and modern art venues. Some favorite clothing resale spots to check out on Hawthorne are House of Vintage, Communion, and the Red Light Clothing Exchange. You can also grab a gourmet treat at the amazing Blue Star Donuts.

Wake up early and catch the picturesque sunrise overlooking Mt. Hood. This can be done from multiple locations, such as Pittock Mansion, Portland’s most historic residence; Rocky Butte Park, where you can see a 360 degree view of the city; or from Mt. Tabor Park, a student favorite because it’s located in the center of the city, provides great views of the entire Portland Metro area, and is a quick stroll from your dorm room.

Grab a bike (you can rent one at no cost using your WP ID card) and go on a leisurely ride at East Esplanade, along the Willamette River overlooking downtown Portland. Use the Burnside Bridge to cross over from the East to the West side of the city, where the bridge offers pedestrians a great view of Portland night or day from a safety raised sidewalk that protects them from cars. The Burnside Bridge will bring you to interesting spots, such as the Portland, Oregon marquee sign, the city’s famous “Big Pink” building, Powell’s Books, Roseland Theater, and the Crystal Ballroom.

Grab your classmates and friends, take some water, and explore the trails in Forest Park. Forest Park is the largest urban forest in the United States with more than 80 miles of soft-surface trails and forest roads. Forest Park gives visitors an opportunity to experience a true northwest forest without leaving the Portland city limits! Take the Ridge Trail for an impressive view of the architecturally stunning, St. John’s Bridge, the tallest bridge in Portland with two 408ft tall Gothic towers. On the Ridge Trail you will also catch glimpses of Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Mt. Hood!

For a Fancy Night Out, Explore SE Portland’s ‘Restaurant Row.’ Southeast Division is one of the most exciting streets for foodies. It’s home to one of Portland’s James Beard Award winning chefs, Andy Ricker, at Pok Pok; one of Bon Appetit’s top restaurants of the year, Ava Genes; one of The Oregonian’s top pizza places (and amazing bakery), Roman Candle; Portland’s Deluxe Cart Pod at Tidbit Food Farm and Garden; and the always popular, Salt and Straw ice cream shop. This urban hot spot has become one of the city’s busiest destinations and it is just blocks away from Warner Pacific!

Explore all of the scholarship opportunities available to you, there might be more than you think! At Warner Pacific, we offer academic scholarships for all students with a GPA of 2.5 and above. You can also compete for music, theatre, and leadership scholarships.

To compete, a student must already be admitted to Warner Pacific and complete the scholarship application by February 2, 2016.

Step 4: Get Admitted and Enroll Congratulations, you’ve made it!

After you’ve applied to schools, you’ll begin to find out where you’ve been admitted. As you make the final decision about where to ultimately enroll, remember to weigh all the factors of your decision. My Story Hakeem Bradley is a junior majoring in Business Administration, so he didn’t anticipate that leading chapel services would become part of his college experience.

What began as sharing a few original spoken word pieces soon blossomed into spiritual leadership as a student chaplain.

“The chapel experience as a whole has helped me realize that God constantly uses ordinary, broken people to do courageous and inspirational things through sharing testimonies, artistic expression, and leadership.
