HICKORY’S HERITAGE

A Proud Heritage H

ickory, North Carolina can trace its furniture history back to the earliest part of the 20th century and a young merchant named George W. Hall. Standing in front of his general mercantile business on Hickory’s main street, Hall would watch the long freight trains rumbling through town, bearing load after load of southern lumber headed for furniture factories up north. North Carolina had only a few furniture factories at that time. In 1890 the state had only six furniture plants employing fewer than 200 employees. In 1901, Hall and a group of other Hickory businessmen and bankers decided that some of the region’s lumber should be used to build furniture in Hickory. When these entrepreneurs organized the town’s first furniture factory, Hickory Furniture Company, Hall was only 28 years old. Despite his youth, Hall successfully managed that first plant and within the year he helped to start the town’s second furniture manufacturing business, Martin Furniture Co. The natural trade routes along the rivers in the region provided an artery by which both designers and craftsmen flowed into the Catawba Valley region in the early years of the 20th century. With the craftsmen came the knowledge and skills to train the abundant and willing labor force available in North Carolina’s foothills. There was no unionization in the industry, and workers were plentiful and eager to work. By the 1920s and 1930s, more furniture plants were forming as the industry spread throughout Hickory and the surrounding areas. But the Depression years were especially hard on the industry because furniture was still considered a luxury and many people could barely afford food, much less furniture. Although some companies went under, others managed to stay afloat, due to smart mergers, frugal policies and loyal employees. With the end of World War II, the furniture industry experienced its biggest boom as returning military veterans looked for jobs that would enable them to build homes and buy new furniture for their families. Hickory area companies grew and split off, creating even more new furniture companies. As generation followed generation in the business of crafting furniture, Hickory and the Catawba Valley became the furniture manufacturing capital of the nation. A Second Industry Is Born In 1960, a second industry arose to support the burgeoning furniture industry when a handful of furniture manufacturers gathered for the first time to display their products to retail dealers. This wholesale exhibition was held on the site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart. And so the Mart became the hub of the wholesale furniture exhibition business and would flourish for decades in western North Carolina. In 1985, Hickory 8|

First, we’re helping the economy by keeping jobs here, jobs that generations of families in our local North Carolina community have made a living at with skill and pride. Third, it is so in tune with the way we have always run our business. We’ve been involved in every aspect since day one and are on site at the factory so we can insure personally our upholstery has the quality, comfort, and style our brand stands for--something much harder to do when manufacturing overseas.” ~ Mitchell Gold, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams “We have made a conscious effort from the day our doors opened inside Hickory Furniture Mart to ONLY offer American Made furniture throughout our entire showroom. ccessories can bring personality into any room throughout the use of style, color and texture. Family heirlooms and personal pieces collected during your travels often spark conversations and recollect fond memories. Fresh flowers, accent pillows and throw blankets seem to add that special finishing touch to any room. It’s amazing how quickly you can transform the look and feel of an open area by simply adding a fine oriental rug as your focal point. Rugs are often self expressive through their age, origin, style, color and shape, but also blend well into any setting shared with furniture, artwork or decorative pieces. Lighting is another great way to freshen up your existing space. Select a unique lighting fixture and pair it with your favorite piece of furniture whether it is indoor or outdoor. Want to add visual interest to your room? Grouping and mixing items of varying heights and textures will draw attention to that particular area. Size is also important. Make sure you match the size of your accessories to complement your furniture. Remember to pair oversized accessories with larger pieces of furniture. These combinations usually display best in spacious open rooms. Mixing in current pieces with antiques and decorative accessories makes for an interesting combination in any home. And the right piece of artwork can truly make a lasting statement, whether it’s a piece you just cannot live without from a renowned artist or something specifically chosen for its color or size in order to complete the look of your favorite room. The showrooms, galleries and outlets located inside Hickory Furniture Mart offer a wide variety of accessories to satisfy any need. Have fun with your selections. LIGHTING

Choosing the Appropriate Lighting

18 |

HFM

COURTESY OF THE LIGHT PLACE/KICHLER LIGHTING

M

ost people do not consider the importance of choosing the appropriate lighting for their home and/or business environments. Good lighting makes it possible for everyday tasks to operate smoothly. Poor lighting may cause frustration and even be dangerous in certain situations. Proper lighting enables us to conduct our businesses and live in our homes safely and efficiently. Selecting the right lighting tends to be very confusing for the average consumer. There is a diverse selection of lighting products available in the market today. These products may be purchased from a variety of sources, including big box stores and the internet. How does a person trust that these impersonal purchases will function as needed and appear as promised when they arrive? Better yet, how likely will these products be replaced, repaired or serviced as needed throughout the years? The lighting industry is changing rapidly. The average consumer is already overwhelmed when trying to make the appropriate lighting and fixture selections for their home and/or business. There is a great amount of discussion about energy efficiency these days … for example incandescent light bulbs will soon be required in all lighting products in order to meet the new higher efficiency standards. A big challenge for most consumers is to know which type of light bulbs they will need to use in the future for the fixtures they are purchasing today. This is why specialty lighting showrooms are becoming more of a viable resource where consumers are able to ask specific questions pertaining to their current and future lighting needs. Lighting specialists will be able to provide the most efficient options currently available and will be able to share any relevant information about energy efficient requirements in the future. A good lighting showroom will offer three primary levels of service to assist their customers: unique and diverse product choices, lighting design expertise, and exemplary customer service. These elements set the best lighting showrooms apart from their strongest competitors. When choosing the appropriate lighting for your home and/ or business you should consider your preference of style, finish and size. Sometimes too many choices prove to be overwhelming so your lighting specialist will help you narrow down your selections and recommend the best option for your needs. If you are remodeling a room or building a new home, you may need assistance with the initial lighting design. Frequently asked questions tend to be “Where do I place my lights for optimal lighting in each room?” “How many light fixtures do I need?” “How high should I hang my chandelier off the top of my dining room table?” “What size fixture do I need for the space I have available?” “Am I able to replace my outdated fixture with a newer one?” Knowledgeable lighting specialists

are able to answer all of these questions and will definitely make the project less stressful for you. On occasion something may happen to your light fixture that damages its appearance and/or function. Your lighting specialist will be able to assist you and provide any replacement parts or complete repair work for your damaged pieces. That one of a kind antique lamp that was inherited from a beloved relative may require a new cord or socket someday. Most lighting showrooms keep a wide variety of parts and lamp shades on hand to replace and repair any family treasure. A good lighting showroom will offer quality product at a fair price. Knowledgeable sales personnel are eager to help customers make the best design decisions while considering both energy efficiency and light output. After the initial sale, services are in place to assist customers with replacement parts and resolve any problems that may arise in the future. Make sure to do your research and select a lighting showroom that you trust. Lighting selection may seem complicated, but it can be easy when assisted by a good lighting showroom. In these challenging economic times, price sometimes governs the initial purchase and many people forget to consider the long term costs of the item purchased. Lighting is typically a home or business purchase that will last a long time so you will benefit most by turning to an expert to assist you with all of your lighting needs. GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP?

How Much Sleep Do You Really Need? T

• To estimate the amount of sleep your body needs without using an alarm, try sleeping in on a day you do not need to wake up at a specific time. Log the number of hours you slept (for this example, let’s use 9 hours). The next time you need to use an alarm to wake up, reference your hours logged (9 hours) and calculate backwards when you would need to go to bed in order to wake up on time. In this example if you need to wake up at 6am, you’ll need to calculate 9 hours back so you would need to be in bed at 9pm. Continue this pattern for 2 weeks straight, even on the days you do not need to use an alarm. • If your alarm is waking you from a sound sleep and you still fall asleep immediately after hitting the snooze button, then back up your bedtime by 30 minutes (in this case to 8:30pm) and continue this pattern for another 2 weeks straight. • If you are waking prior to your alarm each day and you feel fully refreshed, you can start decreasing your amount of sleep by 30 minutes each night and continue this pattern for another 2 weeks straight. Once you find the proper amount of sleep that leaves you feeling refreshed, with our without an alarm, then you need to maintain this sleep schedule as strictly as possible. Any changes to this schedule will alter your most productive sleep pattern and could potentially cause long term problems. Remember our sleep needs are as unique as the size of our feet, so don’t try forcing your foot into a size 8 ½ shoe, even if that is what the average person wears. HFM Reference: Sleep to Live, www.sleeptolive.com

COURTESY OF MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS FACTORY OUTLET MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS

he human race has been eager to expand the amount of time available to them for work and play ever since the discovery of fire made us realize light could brighten our nights. Soon we became a society that worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our natural sleep patterns were manipulated to make us falsely believe we were becoming more productive during our work and play hours. The alteration to our body’s innate need for sleep did not come without a cost. When we choose to ignore our natural sleep patterns, we see an increase in accidents and physical health complaints and a decrease in mental capacity. If we had knowledge that a chemical released in our environment would cause the same problems as not getting enough sleep, we would have banned it years ago. The proper amount and timing of sleep for each individual is as unique as the size of our feet. Sleep should not be compared to myths and unrealistic goals that someone else sets for us. People who study sleep often quote that adults need 7-9 hours of sleep, teenagers need 8½-9½ hours and infants need 18 hours per day. One of the biggest misconceptions is that we need less sleep as we grow older. As we age, we still need the same amount of sleep; however due to changes in the quality of our sleep, we may need to remain in bed longer to receive the same amount as we did when we were younger. Ask yourself the following questions to determine if you are getting enough sleep: • Do you need an alarm clock to wake up? Do you fall back to sleep immediately after hitting the snooze button? If you do, you’re probably not getting enough sleep.

The home theatre category has grown tremendously over the past few years. The abundance of online media has taken the need for this category of furniture to new levels. People are not just sitting in theater seats to watch movies but are browsing the web to shop or find fun facts about their favorite actors and of course there is always a crowd for viewing football. People enjoy seeing a variety of sectional and sofa groupings with motion options so that they can envision how this type of seating could work in their own personal space. This concept works well for accommodating large groups of people and promotes the ability to lounge around and be comfortable. Mixing colors, shapes and textures has become an important aspect of the contemporary style. Although steel and aluminum are still used in many contemporary designs, woods are becoming a strong key element as well. In keeping with the warm and cozy environment, dark chocolate and espresso hues are being incorporated into many dining, entertainment and accent pieces, while cordial tones of walnut warm up bedroom and accent pieces with pure, flowing lines. www.hickoryfurniture.com • 800-462-MART

Many people are mixing microfiber fabric chairs and accent pieces in with their leather groups. Smaller scale pieces reign in the newly down-sized environments of the baby boomers, with a key focus on functionality as well. It seems that durability, function and easy maintenance are all strong desires of the current contemporary customer. Consumers are swaddling themselves in elegance and refinement, while choosing accessories that work for them. Consumers are surrounding themselves with furniture that makes them happy and also shows their strong sense of personal style. Items such as art, throws, rugs, ottomans and vintage pieces have become the accents of choice in today’s contemporary market. Eclecticism and contrasting styles remain the major themes within contemporary designs today. Environments are less “fussy” and more about simplicity and subtlety. Small sofas that have moveable backs convert to beds without the hassle of pulling out a

sleeper sofa. Or if space isn’t a problem, sleeper sofas have come a long way in comfort and styling. It is possible to introduce contemporary style into any part of your home. Go with a simple but sleek track arm sofa versus a large roll arm. You can still dress the sofa in brown hues but accent with today’s trend colors of orange, purple and blue. Add a

glass top cocktail table to open your living space a bit. Include a colorful rug under the table to bring life to the space. If you don’t wish to incorporate a contemporary style throughout your entire home, have fun experimenting with a smaller area within your home. A little spot of contemporary can go a long way! WOOD FURNITURE

Shopping for Wood Furniture hen shopping for wood furniture, there are a few things you should consider before making your final purchases:

Do you have a wood preference? All wood furniture is made from either hardwoods (trees which lose their leaves seasonally) or softwoods (trees that keep their leaves year round). Oak and teak are hardwoods that are very hard and heavy. Fine hardwoods, such as walnut, mahogany, maple and cherry are used in most high quality furniture pieces and will usually require more of a financial investment. A soft wood such as pine is usually used in a less formal piece of furniture and many times will cost less than most hardwoods. Certain woods will display smooth finishes without any patterns and others will show very noticeable grain lines. What kind of finish do you like on your furniture? The finish you choose for your piece of furniture can enhance a wood’s natural tone or completely change it. A natural look can be obtained by simply applying a light oil or wax coating and reapplying regularly. If you’re looking for something more durable, simply apply lacquer or varnish to it. For a more distressed look, the wood may be hammered and beaten before the final finish is applied. This look gives you a more aged appearance. You can also decide to paint the entire piece or hand paint specific sections to add more uniqueness and dimension to its overall appearance. Where do you plan to use your furniture? Decide where you plan to use your piece of furniture. If it will be used in a family room or dining area, you will probably want to invest in a more durable piece since doors and drawers will be opened and closed more frequently and surfaces on tables and chairs will be utilized on a daily basis. If you plan to purchase an accent piece merely for decorative purposes, then you probably don’t need to invest as much for these items since they will not be exposed to daily use. Have you tested all the moving parts? It is very important to make sure that all drawers of a chest or cabinet fit well and slide easily on glides. They should also line up flush with the front of the piece. Look for dust panels in drawers to keep contents clean. Drawers should also have a smooth finish on the inside. Doors and cabinets should open and close with ease. High quality hardware should be used and installed securely. Switches for interior lighting should be easily accessible. All entertainment centers or office desks should contain drilled holes or cut outs where electrical cords are easily fed through. Inspect all table legs to make sure they are even and balanced. If the piece is displayed on an uneven showroom floor it may “rock” when you 800-462-MART • www.hickoryfurniture.com

lean on it. Find a level area and test it again before you make your final purchase. Make sure the finish on a table’s leaves match each other, the table’s surface and also its base. What is the best way to maintain your wood furniture? Dust frequently with a soft, lint-free cloth that has been moistened or treated with polish. Carefully vacuum around your furniture to avoid nicks and scratches. Lift, don’t slide, lamps and other objects sitting on tabletops. Avoid placing wood furniture directly in the path of a heat source. Overexposure to sunlight can adversely affect the finish, so it is recommended that furniture be rearranged from time to time and accessories be rotated. Dirt should be removed from all wood furniture with mild soap on a barely damp cloth, then rinsed and dried with a clean cloth. Protective pads should be used under all hot dishes and spilled liquids should be promptly removed by blotting. Each manufacturer has the best knowledge and expertise on how to maintain their specific products, so make sure you save all of your product tags, directions and contact information for future reference. FABRICS

Linen Fabrics L

inen is a textile made from the fibers of the flax plant. Flax is one of the oldest agricultural plants in the world. In fact, the weaving of flax is older than any written records. Many Egyptian mummies were wrapped in linen because it was seen as a symbol of light and purity and used as a measurement of wealth.

When King Tutankhamen’s tomb was opened they discovered he had curtains made of linen hanging inside that were found still intact all those years later. This definitely says a lot about the durability and the history of such a timeless fabric. Today, flax is grown in many parts of the world, but top quality flax is primarily grown in Western Europe. Many believe that Belgium grows the finest quality flax which produces the finest linen in the world, with Scottish and Irish linen not far behind. In recent years, many bulk linen production plants have even moved to Eastern Europe and China. Linen is a very versatile fabric. Its strength and breathability has been used as both a utility and a luxury fabric in the home. Because the flax plant has a natural vegetable coating, it creates a subtle sheen and luster when woven. The plant’s fiber is strong, soft and light. It is naturally off-white in color, but linen absorbs dyes well and retains any color. Linen typically has a crisp and textural feel but it can range from stiff and rough

to soft and smooth. The natural fibers of the flax make the woven textile slightly bumpy with a smooth finish. By using a better quality of linen, the result will be a smoother surface. In some cases you will find knots or slubs running across the fabric, which is a characteristic of a lesser quality linen. The finest linens have a very consistent diameter and will not have any slubs. Linen has that subtle elegance that helps to create a clean tailored look for many of today’s modern interiors. Linen is one of many choices in a list of fabric options available. When deciding which type of fabric to choose for your furniture, it is always best to consult with someone who has fabric expertise and knowledge. Resource Design, located on Level 3, East Entrance, can share with you all the pros and cons associated with each fabric you are considering. Stop by and see them during your next visit. SHOPPING TIPS

Today Show Furniture Bargain Expert Shares Her Tips on Planning Your Trip to Hickory Furniture Mart I always tell my shopping tour members: “A successful shopping trip to Hickory Furniture Mart begins before you ever leave home, although preparation before you leave home can make your shopping trip a breeze after you arrive in Hickory.” If possible, bring floor plans of your home. Sometimes you need Kimberly Causey to know the exact lengths of each wall and the exact placement of all windows and doors in each room. Be sure to note the height and placement of any chair rails or wainscoting you may have. Also be sure to record the ceiling heights in each room. Don’t forget to pack a measuring tape and notepad for the trip. Remember to bring swatches of all fabrics, trims, and rugs as well as paint chips. If you find a great deal on a sofa, you will need to be sure it will match your existing carpets, walls, and window treatments. Remember, your outlet purchases are nonreturnable, so you need to be certain that your new selections won’t clash before you make your final purchases. If you plan on purchasing fabric at the Mart for window treatments, consult with a drapery workroom to calculate the correct yardage, including allowances for repeats. A “repeat” is the length of a particular design element or print that is duplicated over and over as the fabric is unrolled. When your window treatments are made, extra fabric must be allotted to match the pattern at each seam. Your drapery workroom or seamstress will be able to tell you how many repeats are needed to allow for pattern matching. Don’t forget to bring a digital camera to capture any furniture pieces that catch your eye. It is much easier to flip through photos on your camera to compare different furniture pieces than it is to try and remember from one store to another which styles you liked best. There is so much to choose from at the Mart that the choices can be a bit overwhelming if you are not organized. Bring a small sampling of photos with you of styles you like. If you arrive in Hickory without a specific idea of what you want, it will be much harder to sort through all the choices after you arrive. Take some time before you leave to tear out pictures from magazines of styles that appeal to you. This is the easiest way to communicate your taste and style preference to the showroom designers throughout the Mart. 800-462-MART • www.hickoryfurniture.com

Do your research to find the best travel offers available. Hickory Furniture Mart partners with several area hotels in order to save you money on your overnight accommodations by offering Shop & Stay packages and special Furniture Shopper Rates. There are also special showroom promotions and incentives offered throughout the year so make sure you check the Mart’s website periodically (www.hickoryfurniture.com) and connect with each showroom to find out about all future promotions. Finally, if you are looking to save money, update your home and make some great new friends in the process, you can sign up for one of my furniture tour groups. Please visit my web site, www.smartdecorating.com for details on all upcoming Mart tour groups. HFM Kimberly Causey’s advice on furniture bargains has been featured on The Today Show, Money, Consumers Digest SmartMoney, Reader’s Digest, Redbook, and Woman’s Day.

LEATHER

A Beginner’s Lesson in Leather S

everal of the showrooms and galleries located inside Hickory Furniture Mart offer leather selections for your home furnishings. Check with the guest services representatives at each entrance desk or visit www.hickoryfurniture.com for a listing of all showrooms carrying leather products. Below is a list of basic terms used when referring to leather. Aniline Leather: A leather dyed with pure aniline dyes rather than pigments. This transparent dye completely penetrates the hide with color, allowing the natural grain to show through while protecting the surface. Antiquing: A method of aging the appearance of a hide by the application of a darker color over a lighter color, creating dramatic highlights. Buffing: A mechanical process that reduces the appearance of surface blemishes from leather hides. Leather that is not buffed is called “full grain” because the natural grain retains its markings and characteristics. Cowhide: The entire animal hide, which averages 45-50 square feet. Embossing: Impressing a pattern onto the surface of the hide to create a motif or texture. A very even and uniform pattern is created, possibly to disguise natural defects or blemishes, or to create visually exciting designs.

Fat Wrinkle: Natural wrinkles in the leather grain that are a part of its unique beauty. These are only visible in top grain leathers. Finishing: Any processing performed after the initial dyeing such as buffing, embossing, milling, spraying, waterproofing, waxing, etc. Hand: A term that describes the leather’s softness and feel. Natural Grain: Leather whose grain has not been altered in any way, so the natural appearance of the grain is apparent. Protected: Leather whose surface is coated with pigment or other opaque solution for uniform color and cleanability. The natural marks on the hide cannot be seen. Split: The under portion of a hide or skin that has been split into two or more thicknesses. Splits may be finished and embossed to simulate a full top grain, but are not as high quality. Splits are often used for suede. Suede: Leather produced from the flesh split, exhibiting a velvetlike nap. Suede splits are not top grain leathers and do not have the same strength and integrity. Top Grain: The top layer and highest quality part of the hide. When leather is split in processing, the top grain is the upper portion of the hide. Because of its strength and beauty, this supple layer is the standard of fine upholstery. HFM Reference: Elite Leather, www.eliteleather.com

ADDITIONAL TIPS

Shopping Tips From a Professional Interior Designer

W

henever I make a trip to Hickory Furniture Mart, I enjoy browsing through all the unique showrooms, outlets and galleries. Having been to the Mart several times, I have a method for my personal shopping strategies. • Always pick up the newest issue of the Mart’s Buying Guide. I check the directory and scan for any new galleries or outlets that may have opened since my last visit. • Be sure to pick up the most recent HFM floorplan (also available at the entrance desk) to determine where your shopping adventure will begin. • Take a walk through the entire Mart first to get the lay of the land before you begin your serious shopping. You should also remember to bring any floor plans or photos with you, and don’t forget your measuring tape, camera and comfortable walking shoes. • To help your mind stay organized, determine your route. Are you going to (1) visit all of the outlets first and then move onto the other showrooms? (2) Start at the fourth level and work your way down? (3) Start at the first level and work your way up? I prefer the first choice, but if it’s your first visit to the Mart, you might want to understand the layout and choose the second or third option to make things a bit easier. Showrooms within the Mart may change locations. Be sure to study the floor plan so you are able to locate all your favorite showrooms in advance. The lower level on the west side of the building is sometimes missed, as well as the lower level on the far south side of the building. • Be sure to place a small check mark and make any necessary notations next to the name of each showroom you visit on the map. This will help avoid the confusion later of wondering if you have already visited a specific showroom or where you fell in love with that perfect red sofa! As often as I have visited the Mart, if I don’t take good notes, I am often frustrated trying to track down that cute little corner table that I swore I would remember…. • Make a note of where you can stop for a snack or a meal. This will be important as the day progresses. Don’t forget that eating is part of the adventure. You’ll definitely need a break to collect your thoughts and review your options thus far. In the first part of my shopping excursion, I try to follow these steps: • I usually scour the outlets for special deals and look for any off-thefloor specials in all the other showrooms. I determine if there is a specific piece of furniture or decorative item that might work best in the shape, size, and style I need. I don’t necessarily look at the fabric it’s covered in or the color of the wood. These things can be easily changed if the price is right. You will need to spend some time scouting around the showrooms for these exciting buys. • You will need to determine whether or not a certain piece of furniture will be a good buy at the price that is being offered. 800-462-MART • www.hickoryfurniture.com

Consider whether or not you will need to change the fabric or decide if it will work “as is.” Keep an open mind and be flexible and you will see that there are several options available to you that you may have never even considered before. Think about using a piece as is and paint the wood or even the fabric! Kate Gladchun • Remember that there are also major Interior Designer, Detroit, Michigan sale events and special promotions throughout the year and you may be able to discover some additional buying incentives during these times. As you enter each showroom, check for signs posted near the doors or ask a salesperson if there are any additional discounts being offered that day. The second part of my shopping excursion is usually much easier. If you have done your homework, you probably have determined exactly what you are looking for in regards to size, color, style, etc. You may still need to finalize fabric and trim selections, but you probably already have a good idea of what you want to purchase. Most sales staff are very straightforward and will give you their honest opinion. It is very helpful to have a magazine or catalog picture with you, in order to give the salesperson an idea of your style preference. Here is a list of essentials to take with you on your next shopping trip: Floor plans — bring precise measurements of space and existing pieces to be replaced Camera Tape measure Comfortable shoes Lightweight tote bag Color samples of your painted walls Fabric swatches from other furniture you own Fabric swatches for reupholstering a new piece Photographs of the rooms you are furnishing A sweater or sweatshirt — room temperatures can vary throughout the building Switch from a purse to a belted bag — one less thing draped over your shoulder Keep an open mind, attitude and bring a sense of adventure Based on these strategies and tips, I am confident that you will have a successful shopping experience and discover exceptional values every time you shop at Hickory Furniture Mart. OUTLETS OFFER BARGAINS

Outlets Offer Great Bargains And Immediate Availability W

Outlet savings tend to range from 65 to 80 percent off normal retail prices. In addition, you are able to buy directly off the floor and take your purchases home with you immediately. Products available inside outlets are typically a mixture of showroom samples, overruns, closeouts and custom orders that retailers or customers have cancelled for one reason or another. Many people enjoy the thrill of new product arriving daily and inventory constantly changing. If you find something in an outlet that you absolutely love, try not to hesitate too long before buying it because it may not be there when you return. Most outlets are not able to hold items and sales are usually on a first come, first serve basis. Outlets also offer one-of-a-kind Market samples. These items are very popular because they are not available anywhere else in the world. Manufacturers design samples specifically for their displays at the spring and fall International Home Furnishings wholesale Markets in High Point. Some of these pieces may never even go into production so after the Market ends many are sent to the showrooms and outlets inside the Mart where they are then made available to sell to the general public. These purchases usually spark interesting conversations with family and friends. Make sure you visit all the outlets and showrooms located inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of the special finds and incredible deals they have to offer on a daily basis. HFM

OUTDOOR FURNITURE

Outdoor Furniture F

Today’s outdoor furniture is made durable enough to stay outside year round and is as comfortable as many indoor options. Outdoor fabrics and finishes such as vinyl wicker, cast aluminum, wrought iron, wicker loom and teak are virtually 100% waterproof in order to withstand the outdoor elements in any climate. When selecting your outdoor cushions, choose a material that is 100% solution-dyed acrylic. If you purchase sling furniture, make sure the material is infused with UV inhibitors for long lasting durability. International trends unveiled at the International Spoga Garden Show in Cologne, Germany featured many nostalgic and whimsical looks in addition to cooler more restrained styles infused with a variety of natural materials. This trend was marked by straightforward furniture designs, minimalism and combinations of unpainted steel and ash or grey wood. There were also many pieces that exhibited a combination of modern and classic features. These designs highlighted modern chairs with square tubes that incorporated classic or flowery laser cut patterns. Remember to order your outdoor furniture far enough in advance. If you are not purchasing items off the floor, most showrooms recommend that you allow at least 90 days when ordering any outdoor furniture to ensure that it will arrive within your desired time frame. Seasons Outdoor and Sunroom Gallery by Hickory Park, located on Level 3, East Entrance, is eager to help you select the best furniture for any of your outdoor needs. or a growing number of people, their garden, patio or balcony is their favorite place for getting away from it all. You can use outdoor furniture to create your own personal and intimate area where you are able to kick back and relax with your family and friends or unwind on your own after a stressful day at work. When deciding the best type of furniture to choose for your outdoor space, you should begin by considering the furniture’s main function. Are you always hosting family and friends at your place? Then you’ll probably need a large dining table and enough chairs to accommodate your normal size group. If you intend to use your space as a personal retreat, then a comfortable lounge chair or glider bench may suit your needs better. Make sure you measure your open space before purchasing so that your furniture fits properly without looking cramped or you don’t lose yourself in a large space without enough furniture to fill it. Always consider your own personal style. You want to bring your personality into your space so choose colors and fabrics that make you happy and accentuate your unique style. Various shades of blues and greens paired with browns are very popular right now. Stripes never seem to lose their popularity. If wicker is your preference, this year presents more options for thicker weaves incorporated into larger scale furniture to fill expansive outdoor spaces. Don’t forget to accessorize your space with that perfect accent piece. Side tables with natural stone tops and patio tables with gas fire pits are both very popular this year. Adding outdoor lighting will allow you to extend your entertaining late into the evening hours.

You’ll want them to still love their furniture selections even into their teenage years. Always choose a piece of furniture that is durable and made of solid, quality construction. Many parents are opting for furniture with a slightly distressed finish so it doesn’t show as much wear and tear throughout the years. If you’re looking for items such as a crib (with or without an option to convert it into a youth bed), changing table, high-back rocker, glider rocker, bunk-bed, twin bed, full bed, dresser with mirror, chest, activity table, or a variety of fun accessories to include in your child’s room, you’ll find a variety of options available inside the Mart. Young America by Stanley is 100 percent Made in the USA and a premium youth furniture line, which is an industry leader in safety, style, and color choices. With dozens of paint and stain options, parents can create a look together with their child in their custom youth area that is truly unique and lasts for years.

DESIGN GROUPS

Design Groups Travel to the Mart ach year out of state designers travel to Hickory Furniture Mart for the sole purpose of purchasing furniture for themselves and their clients. Andrew Limone, Owner of Andrew Limone Interiors in Florham Park, NJ has been bringing his design groups from New Jersey to North Carolina for many years. When asked why he travels such a great distance, this is what Mr. Limone had to say: “Hickory Furniture Mart is an incredible resource. They offer a quality product with vast selections at tremendous discounts. I like the fact that everything is located under one roof and I can browse through each showroom with ease. The sales staff throughout the Mart is also very friendly and knowledgeable. Since I work with clients from different locations, it is extremely important to have a reliable shipping service available to transport the furniture I select back to them. I always enjoy my time at the Mart.” Hickory Furniture Mart looks forward to working with Mr. Limone and his design groups on an annual basis. In fact, each year designers from all over the world are being referred by their clients and colleagues to the Mart. Many of the showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart offer discounts for professional designers and design groups. Special hotel rates are also available at the Mart’s on-site hotel or at several partner hotels nearby. For more information on designer incentive programs, visit www.hickoryfurniture.com or contact the marketing department at 1-800-462-MART (6278) to arrange your next group visit. Andrew Limone was a charter member of the New Jersey chapter of the Interior Design Society (IDS). He also founded the Blue Ridge, North Carolina IDS chapter in 2007 and is the former National President of IDS and AIDP. Mr. Limone has been a guest designer on numerous television shows and was published in NJ Monthly and the NJ Star Ledger. HFM 800-462-MART • www.hickoryfurniture.com

e realize that you may have traveled hundreds, even thousands of miles to make your furniture purchases. Finishing Touch Freight Services, the Mart’s consolidated shipping service, is located on Level 3 at the East entrance. They will see to it that your merchandise is transported safely and professionally to your home after you leave. Shipping charges are separate from your furniture purchases. The stores that you purchase from will still honor any shipping discounts they are offering even if you decide to consolidate your complete order through Finishing Touch Freight Services.

Finishing Touch Freight Services works with professional in-home delivery businesses and can arrange shipment of your furniture to anywhere in the world. We encourage you to stop by their office during Mart hours, call 800-874-6486 (toll free), 828-431-4766 (local), fax 828-431-4765, or email service@finishingtouchfreight.com to make all of your shipping arrangements. If you wish to consolidate your purchases into one shipment, you will need to place all of your orders in the same name and fill out the “Request for Consolidation of Merchandise” form located at each guest services desk or inside the Finishing Touch Freight Services office, located on Level 3. Turn in your form to the Finishing Touch Freight Services office as soon as you are finished shopping, even if you don’t want your furniture shipped right away. Merchandise that is purchased and is “ready-to-go” off the showroom floor can be shipped separately from special-order merchandise. If your purchases total 500 pounds or more, you may split-ship your order and receive the same discounted rate as if all the furniture were shipped together. You must let 64 |

Finishing Touch Freight Services know which furniture you would like to ship first, and which may be delivered at a later date. If your merchandise needs to be stored for a longer period of time, please discuss this with Finishing Touch Freight Services so that they can inform you of any related storage fees. Typically the carriers are willing to store furniture for 60 days before any storage fees are incurred. A representative at Finishing Touch Freight Services can help you decide which will be the best course of action for your own personal situation. You may contact Finishing Touch Freight Services at any time for information regarding your order, including the name of your assigned delivery company and whether or not all stores have released your purchases to the delivery company for shipment. All remaining balances must be paid and all stores must release your furniture before shipment can be scheduled. Just a friendly reminder that the estimated delivery times below start AFTER all account balances have been paid and all furniture has been released by each showroom: Southeast: 2-3 weeks Midwest: 4-6 weeks

East Coast: 2-4 weeks West Coast: 6-8 weeks

International: Shipping times vary based on final destination country. Please call or stop by shipping office. Your assigned carrier will notify you at least 48 hours before your home delivery is scheduled. Please make sure that the shipper has your correct delivery address and phone number and it is important to confirm that the shipment includes all of the furniture you purchased from each showroom. Be sure to clear enough space in every room where your furniture is scheduled to be set up. You may be asked to provide an extra person at your home to assist with unloading your furniture if any single item weighs more than 350 pounds or if any large, heavy furniture must be carried up stairs or through narrow turns. Upon arrival of your furniture, please have payment for all freight charges available. Approved forms of payment include certified check or money order. Payment is required prior to unloading any of your merchandise. It is extremely important to carefully inspect each piece of furniture as it is unwrapped and brought into your home. If there are any damages, you must refuse the damaged item and contact Finishing Touch Freight Services immediately. Make notes on your bill of lading regarding any damaged or missing items so that the situation can be addressed promptly by the carrier. For additional information on consolidated shipping services, please contact Finishing Touch Freight Services directly at 800-874-6486.
