One finish technique of particular beauty is gold brushing. Through this process a skilled artisan uses a sealer and a fine gold dust finish material to hand brush on highlights to specific areas of the piece of furniture. The gold finish is applied to whatever areas the customer has requested such as a specific carved area on a decorative chest shown here. The end result is a stunning work of art.

BAKER FURNITURE

The process of silver leafing begins with a smoothly sanded, prepped wood surface. Silver enamel is then applied by spraying it on in an even wet coat. After the enamel is dried and hand-sanded, a thin layer of glue that is specifically designed for leafing is rolled onto it. Our trained decorators then hand apply each square in an even uniformed pattern across this freshly glued surface. Two applications of sealer are then sprayed across the entire surface and a glaze (a pigmented material) is sprayed on and wiped off leaving a soft rich color to the leaf. A sealer clear coat is then sprayed onto the glazed surface following a clear coat lacquer, giving it a more finished and smoother glossy surface. Soft-sanding may be used as a final step if needed.

Our leather cutting process uses a combination of leather markers and hand cutters. Once our leather markers have “marked” each custom ordered piece to its exact specifications, the leather is then sent to our hand cutters.

Our hand cutters wear a special wire mesh glove that protects the leather as well as the hand itself, keeping both safe. Each piece of leather is cut carefully and precisely to match the marked pattern so it “fits like a glove” once the upholstery department begins to work their magic.

Patterns start in our research and development department by using scrap fabrics to fit onto each new frame measuring through trial and error until perfected. The pattern is then hand drawn onto a piece of cardboard and punched out for our cutting department to use on a daily basis. Fabric cutting is also an art form that is perfected through years of experience. Pattern fabrics are best cut by the human eye in order to match the furniture pattern precisely with the fabric pattern so that when you finish, you have an original product that is a complete work of art.

Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charleston Forge manufacturers high-end steel and wood furniture at their North Carolina factory in Boone. Every piece of handbuilt Charleston Forge furniture has a steel component to it. Many of those are forged — shaped using either a power hammer or bent using a custom jig. In order for this to happen the steel is heated in a forge to about 1200 degrees, at which temperature the steel is soft enough to be shaped. The blacksmiths train for months in order to acquire the skills needed to master this art.

The upholstery process of tufting has been used for centuries. Long before coils and memory foam, mattresses were filled with feathers, cotton rags, and other materials, and tufting was used to keep this stuffing from shifting to one side or the other when the mattress was flipped. As residential furnishings evolved, so has tufting. Today, we use hand-applied button tufts to elevate the look for a more clean, modern aesthetic on many different types of furniture. Our craftsmen create indentions at regular intervals across the top of the cushion by passing a long needle and thread through to the back side of the frame. The thread is then pulled taut and tied so that the button will remain firmly in place.

Eight-way hand tying is an age-old construction technique that has been passed down through generations of craftsmen and women.

It is an art which takes time and patience. Steel bands are stretched under strips of webbing and are double nailed to the frame. This is the foundation for the spring chamber which adds incredible strength and eliminates the possibility of future sagging. Double cone coil springs are securely nailed to the hardwood frame, and then skilled craftsmen tie these springs by hand in eight different directions, from side to side, front to back and diagonally, which provides outstanding firm support and long-lasting comfort.

In the process of hand-knotting rugs, the knots are tied to the warp(s) of the rug, cut off, then the craftsmen will move along to the next knot. Once an entire line of knots is completed, they add a weft in between to ensure the line is even. A handknotted rug may have anywhere from 20,000 knots in a 8’ X 10’ size rug, to more than 300,000 knots depending on the quality.

Warp thread: This is the thread that is strung over the loom vertically, and holds the tension while you weave.

The first step in beginning the routing process is to identify the style of furniture that you are building so that you are able to select the correct router bit to use. In order to cut large edge furniture profiles, the router must be operated at a very high speed, so it is very important that the router bit is securely fastened before starting this process. In order to achieve the highest quality products, Amish routing is not done at full depth in one pass. It requires multiple passes to ensure the best precision of each piece. After the furniture profile has been cut clean, the edge is then hand sanded before staining and finishing it to complete the process.

We utilize a spray and wipe staining technique as the first stage of our overall finishing process. The stain is sprayed onto the furniture, it soaks in, and then we hand wipe it off, which exposes the natural grain of the wood. After the stain has been sprayed, wiped and cured, a sealer is placed on top of it to lock in the stain and to protect the wood. After it has been sealed, it is placed in an oven and then sanded afterwards.

This process opens the pores back up, knocks down the finish and preps it for the top coat. We use a sealed top coat booth with a down draft to prevent any particles from getting into the finish, making it smooth and clean. Then we apply a very durable catalyzed conversion finish to allow it to breath while protecting the wood from moisture. Finally, the piece is placed in the oven again to bake on the finish, and within 3 hours you have a finished piece ready to be delivered to your home.

We employ two different frame construction methods, each unique to the specific style of the furniture. For frames that feature exposed wood or curvature in their design, we use kiln-dried hardwoods with double dowels and corner blocks that are glued and screwed into the frame.

On other frames, we use engineered hardwoods that are made with up to 15 plys, and a mortise and tenon joinery. These frames are computer cut for extreme precision which produces minimal waste. Both methods ensure the highest quality and longevity for our customer’s furniture.

J&L Furniture Services also offers North Carolina deliveries with express service options, warehouse storage, restoration, repairs, refinishing, painting, upholstery and re-upholstery services. They also specialize in commercial services in addition to their residential services.

We realize that you may have traveled hundreds, even thousands of miles to make your furniture purchases with us.

We want to make sure that your furniture arrives safely to your final destination so we have set up a consolidated shipping office inside the Mart to help answer any questions you may have about shipping before you leave the building.

The Mart’s consolidated shipping service is managed by J&L Furniture Services and is located on Level 3 at the North entrance. They will work directly with the showrooms inside the Mart and the delivery companies to ensure that your merchandise is transported safely and professionally to your home after you leave. Shipping charges are separate from your furniture purchases and there is an additional one-time $25 consolidated shipping service fee per customer in order to cover the cost of managing your consolidated shipment all the way from your showroom purchases through the delivery to your home. If you are only ordering from one showroom or receiving separate shipments from each showroom, there will be no $25 consolidation fee added to your order. The showrooms will provide you with an estimate of your shipping charges before you leave the building and the delivery company will confirm the exact shipping charges after they pick up your furniture from each showroom and weigh your complete order together. Shipping charges are calculated by the total weight of your 60

J&L Furniture Services works with professional delivery companies to arrange shipment of your furniture to your home.

Please turn in your consolidated shipping form to J&L Furniture Services’ office as soon as you are finished shopping, even if you do not want your furniture shipped right away. Merchandise that is purchased and is “ready-to-go” off the showroom floor may be shipped separately from special order merchandise that may take a few weeks to arrive. This is called a split shipment. If you are interested in this option, please let Luis know which furniture you would like to ship first and which furniture you would like delivered at a later date and he will arrange this directly with the delivery company. You may also wait until all of your custom order pieces arrive and receive one single delivery with everything together. Most delivery companies will store your furniture 30 days after they receive it from each showroom.

After that, storage fees may be incurred.

If you have chosen to consolidate your shipment, you may contact J&L Furniture Services directly for information regarding your order, including the name of your assigned delivery company and whether or not all stores have released your purchases to the delivery company so they 800-462-MART

Your delivery company will notify you 48 hours before your home delivery is scheduled. Please make sure that they have your correct delivery address and phone number, and confirm that the shipment includes all of the furniture you purchased from each showroom. It is important to also inform J&L about any building or gated community access restrictions in advance.

Be sure to clear enough space in every room where your furniture is scheduled to be set up. You may be asked to provide an extra person at your home to assist with unloading your furniture if any single item weighs more than 350 pounds or if any large, heavy furniture must be carried up stairs or through narrow turns.

Upon arrival of your furniture, please have payment ready for all shipping charges. When the delivery company calls you to schedule your delivery date, they will provide you with your total shipping cost at that time. Approved forms of payment include certified check or money order. Payment is required prior to unloading any of your merchandise. Please carefully inspect each piece of furniture as it is unwrapped and brought into your home. If there are any damages, you must refuse the damaged item and contact J&L Furniture Services immediately. Make notes on your bill of lading regarding any damaged or missing items so that Luis may address the situation promptly with the showrooms and the delivery company.

CRAFTING HICKORY The Hickory Trail and the newly renovated downtown are just a few Crafting Hickory projects that are transforming the Hickory region.

Spanning 10 miles across the city, the Hickory Trail, which is now under construction, will connect popular destinations and amenities, while providing bicycle and pedestrian safe pathways throughout the city. The Trail accentuates the city’s culture of providing an atmosphere for dynamic growth and robust development and is a major asset in the community’s effort to craft a strong economy, provide good jobs, and create a desirable quality of life for its residents.

The Hickory Trail includes a City Walk from Lenoir-Rhyne University through the city’s newly renovated downtown area to Old Lenoir Road. It continues with a Book Walk through the Ridgeview community, highlighting its history, then extends with an Old Lenoir Walk through a reinvigorated arts district (OLLE), and

a Riverwalk, featuring an iconic bridge over Lake Hickory where you will enjoy elevated trails through the woods that border the lake. The last leg of the trail takes you on an Aviation Walk that offers easy access across U.S. 321 to L.P. Frans Stadium, with the trail completing at Hickory Regional Airport.

Additionally, the city has modernized aesthetics and enhanced its downtown center with a distinguished promenade highlighting Union Square storefronts and a central pathway bisecting two large lawn areas. Open air seating areas called “garden rooms” or “parklets” were added along with enhanced lighting for evening strolls, new directional signage, an entrance archway, and complimentary Wi-Fi, provided by CommScope. The complete renovation project also included new public restrooms and a multi-purpose shade structure. The central stage for musical and artistic performances taking place under the popular Sails on the Square still remains intact.

This urban trail system and downtown renovation initiative has already been a catalyst for economic development in Hickory, attracting interested businesses, visitors, and residents seeking a wellcrafted community. HFM
