INTERVIEW WITH NIKI MEEHAN, HEAD OF SCHOOL, ROME INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Marco Venturini

N

iki Meehan, a Scottish-born educator with more than two decades of international leadership experience in Jakarta, Shanghai, Bratislava and, most recently, Prague. We spoke with her about balancing the IB and Italian state curricula, RIS’s Forest School program on its Monte Mario campus, and how the school is approaching AI in the classroom. WIR: You’re originally from Scotland but

have spent most of your career leading schools abroad, in Jakarta, Shanghai, Bratislava, and most recently Prague. What drew you to Rome International School? NM: I’ve been fortunate to spend more than twenty years leading exceptional international schools across Asia and Europe, and every school has taught me something different about leadership and learning. What attracted me to RIS was the opportunity to join a school with strong foundations, an outstanding community and enormous potential for the future. What really stood out was the combination of academic ambition, exceptional teachers, a beautiful 3.5-hectare green campus in Monte Mario that also gives students room to explore and learn outdoors. Combine that with the opportunity to be inspired by one of the world’s most inspiring cities where history, art, and innovation are right outside our gates - and the global reach of the Globeducate family, made it feel like a very special place. For me, leadership is about continual renewal. Schools should never stand still - we build on what works well while always asking how we can make learning even better for every child.

Niki Meehan, Head of School, at Rome International School.

4 | October 2026 • Wanted in Rome

You hold a Bachelor of Education from Edinburgh and an MSc in Educational

Rome International School is set in a green campus in Monte Mario.

Leadership from Leicester. How has that academic grounding shaped your approach to running a school? One of my strongest beliefs is that learning never stops. My qualifications gave me a solid foundation, but I’ve learned just as much from working alongside exceptional educators around the world. Every school, every colleague and every child teaches you something new. That’s why professional learning is so important at RIS. We expect our students to embrace challenge and curiosity, so our teachers- and I include myself in that - must do exactly the same. The challenge-and-support culture we want for our students applies equally to adults. You’ve led schools across four very different countries before Rome. What have those varied postings taught you about what actually makes a school community work, regardless of where it is? Different countries have different cultures, but great schools share the same foundations. Living and working across different cultures taught me one universal truth: whether you are in Jakarta, Prague, or Rome, parents want the exact same thing. They want a

school where their child is truly seen, supported, and inspired to reach their potential. A school community works when it strikes two balances: creating a safe, welcoming ‘home base’ for families navigating international transitions, while maintaining a love of learning and high expectations for what students can achieve. When children feel secure and known, they thrive educationally - and that is where true breakthroughs happen. I’ve also learned that the best leaders spend less time behind desks and more time with people. I like being in classrooms, talking to students, listening to parents and supporting teachers because that’s where you really understand your school and community. Your bio talks about wanting every child to ‘thrive today while being fully prepared for the future.’ In practice, how do you balance those two things when they sometimes pull in different directions? Children only get one childhood, so school should be both joyful and ambitious. Academic excellence matters enormously, but so do curiosity, creativity, resilience and confidence. We want children to enjoy learning, ask thoughtful questions, solve problems and become increasingly independent learners. Wanted in Rome • October 2026 | 5

Education

There are around 60 different nationalities among the student body at Rome International School.

The future belongs to people who can think critically, adapt and continue learning throughout their lives. Our role is to develop those qualities from Nursery right through to the IB Diploma Programme. RIS offers both the International Baccalaureate and the Italian state curriculum. How does the school balance the two, and why does that combination matter for students living in Italy? It’s genuinely the best of both worlds. Students learn through English every day, becoming truly fluent while also benefiting from a strong Italian curriculum, the opportunity to complete the Italian State examinations and graduate with a bilingual diploma. Families don’t have to choose between an international education and maintaining their Italian identity - they can have both. Our students leave with global perspectives while remaining firmly connected to their own culture and language.

outside every day in all-weather to explore biodiversity and the surrounding ecosystem. They are constructing shelters, navigating natural obstacles, and learning risk assessment firsthand. This hands-on inquiry fosters creativity, builds resilience and confidence faster than any indoor lesson can. As students grow, that philosophy expands. Whether it’s practical fieldwork on our grounds or studying ancient history or urban planning directly in the Centro Storico, we treat our campus - and the city of Rome - as an extension of the classroom. What does building a genuinely inclusive and supportive environment look like day to day at RIS, for staff as well as students? We often talk about ensuring every child is known, challenged and supported. It means pastoral care is woven into the fabric of daily school life.

Our 3-hectare campus nestled in the Monte Mario Natural Reserve is an active laboratory.

For students, inclusion also means emotional safety; it’s about understanding every learner as an individual and helping them achieve their personal best. It’s about active mentor relationships, proactive wellbeing check-ins, and using our amazing woodland surroundings to give children space to recharge and reset. When a child feels known, secure, and valued for who they are, academic confidence follows naturally.

In Forest School, our youngest learners step

For our staff, wellbeing is just as intentional.

RIS sits on a 3-hectare campus inside the Monte Mario Natural Reserve. How is the school using that setting for what you call Forest School?

teaching and learning. How is RIS thinking about AI and the future of education?

As part of the Globeducate network, how does an IB education at RIS prepare students for universities and careers beyond Italy?

AI is already changing the world our students will enter, so schools have a responsibility to prepare them.

The IB is much more than an academic qualification. It develops young people who are reflective, resilient, internationally minded and ready to contribute positively to society. Through Creativity, Activity and Service, students develop leadership, empathy and a sense of responsibility alongside academic excellence. Being part of Globeducate enriches this even further. Our students collaborate with peers across the world through sports, music, debating, Model United Nations, environmental projects and student leadership events, building friendships and perspectives that last a lifetime. AI is changing fast, and every school is grappling with what that means for

Our approach isn’t simply about using AI; it’s about understanding it. Students need the knowledge, critical thinking and ethical judgement to use technology responsibly rather than becoming dependent on it. Technology should enhance learning—not replace curiosity, creativity or independent thinking. That’s why we work closely with both students and parents to navigate this rapidly evolving area together. Parents moving to Rome often arrive anxious about uprooting their children mid-education. What role do you want parents to play in the school community here, beyond just enrolling their kids? Moving countries is a huge life change, and we understand that because so many of our families have experienced it themselves. We work hard to ensure every family feels welcomed from day one, and our students are wonderfully inclusive in helping new classmates settle quickly. Parents are partners in education, not spectators. Through our Friends of RIS Parent Partnership model there are many ways to get involved, whether that’s supporting events, sharing expertise or simply being part of the daily life of the school. Strong home-school partnerships are at the heart of great education. You talk about wanting students to ‘love coming to school.’ What does that actually look like in practice, and how do you know when it’s working? It starts with children feeling safe, happy and valued.

RIS students range in age from two to 18.

build friendships and become increasingly independent learners. As Head of School, I spend a great deal of time in classrooms and being visible around school because that’s where you see the real culture of a school. Watching children fully engaged in learning is the best measure of success. You work with a lot of highly mobile international families relocating to Rome. Having lived across Asia and Europe yourself, what advice do you give families going through that transition? Embrace the opportunity. International education gives children remarkable opportunities to develop resilience, adaptability and confidence while building friendships with people from all over the world. My advice is always to become involved quickly. Join the community, encourage your children to try new activities and trust the process. Children are often far more adaptable than we imagine. Outside of school, how do you spend your time in Rome? Rome is an extraordinary place to live. My husband and I enjoy exploring different

neighbourhoods, walking in the parks, discovering local restaurants and making the most of the city’s incredible history and culture. Professionally, I also see Rome through the eyes of an educator. Every museum, archaeological site and piazza is another opportunity to inspire learning. Looking ahead, what does success look like for Rome International School under your leadership, five years from now? Educational excellence is our baseline and I want RIS to be recognised among Italy’s top international schools. But true success lies beyond the classroom, it is much more than examination results. I want RIS to be celebrated as a school that leverages our unique environment in the green heart of Rome, where our dual international and Italian pathways nurture the talents and interests of every individual. A place where teachers excel, parents are active, and students graduate as confident, compassionate leaders ready to make a positive impact on society. Academic results matter and developing young people ready to shape the future is our true measure of success. T

he 21st Rome Film Fest runs from 13 to 25 October, with more than 150 titles and a starry Grand Public line-up.

The Fondazione Cinema per Roma unveiled the full programme on 25 September, confirming the festival’s third consecutive edition under artistic director Paola Malanga. The 2026 edition of the Festa del Cinema di Roma takes place once again at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, with additional screenings across the city. It opens with Il rumore delle cose nuove (The Noise of New Things), the latest film from Paolo Genovese, director of Perfetti sconosciuti and last year’s box-office hit Follemente. The ensemble comedy-drama stars Emanuela Fanelli, Claudia Pandolfi, Vittoria Puccini, Stefano Accorsi, Lino Musella and Edoardo Pesce, with Claudio Santamaria. The opening ceremony will be hosted by Ema Stokholma. Spanish actor Javier Bardem will receive the festival’s Career Achievement Award, presented to him by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino. Bardem, an Oscar winner for No Country for Old Men, will also present El ser querido, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Cannes-acclaimed drama in which he plays an ageing, troubled film director, screening in the Best of 2026 section. British producer Tessa Ross has separately been named recipient of the festival’s Industry Lifetime Achievement Award. The Selezione Ufficiale is divided into six strands: the international competition Progressive Cinema - Visioni per il mondo di domani, which mixes fiction, documentary and animation across up to 18 titles; the freeform, non-competitive Freestyle section covering film, art and television; Grand Public, aimed at wide audiences; Proiezioni Speciali; Best of 2026, showcasing highlights from other festivals; and Storia del Cinema, dedicated to restorations.

Among the starrier Grand Public titles are Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun, adapted from Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel and starring Jenna Ortega, Amy Adams and Steve Buscemi; Jesse Eisenberg’s The Debut, his third film as director, with Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti; Anton Corbijn’s A Talent for Murder, starring Helen Mirren as crime novelist Patricia Highsmith opposite Alden Ehrenreich; and Simon Stone’s Elsinore, with Andrew Scott and Olivia Colman. Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky, tracing Sylvester Stallone’s rise, and Brian Duffield’s survival thriller Whalefall, with Josh Brolin, also feature, alongside French director JeanPierre Jeunet’s Changer l’eau des fleurs, with Sergio Castellitto, and Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, starring Deva Cassel and Romain Duris, both having their world premieres in Rome. Italian cinema is strongly represented in Grand Public, including Massimiliano Bruno’s Un tranquillo funerale di famiglia, with Diego Abatantuono and Stefania Sandrelli, and Nicola Prosatore’s Pino Daniele biopic Je so’ pazzo. Paola Randi’s Se domani non torno, based on the murder of Giulia Cecchettin and starring Filippo Timi, will premiere jointly with the festival’s youth strand, Alice nella Città. Women directors feature prominently across the selection, among them Susanna Nicchiarelli, Blerta Basholli, Clio Barnard, Frauke Finsterwalder, Kasia Smutniak and Ginevra Elkann, several presenting work that also passed through this year’s Venice festival. Television gets a strong showing too, with the world premiere of Marvel Vision Quest, starring Paul Bettany and James Spader, and a new season of All’s Fair with Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close, alongside Italian series including Michele Placido’s Livatino and Letizia Lamartire’s La famiglia Panini. EXHIBITIONS FOOD: IL GUSTO NELL’ARTE FROM 17 OCT

Rome’s Chiostro del Bramante will host an ambitious exhibition exploring the multi-layered relationship between art and food throughout human history. Curated by former Tel Aviv Museum of Art director Suzanne Landau, the exhibition examines food not merely as physical nourishment, but as a universal creative medium, a cultural symbol, and an expression of identity and shared memory. The exhibition invites visitors to reconsider the everyday act of dining through ritual, social communion and artistic transformation, with the works on display bringing historical artworks into direct dialogue with contemporary artistic research, installations, design and objects. From the 16th century to the contemporary scene, and from still lifes to large-scale installations, the exhibited works reveal the complexity of a theme that has accompanied human creativity throughout time. The exhibition has sections dedicated to still life, the body, the table and kitchen, memory, play, design, global exchange, ecology, and cinema, fostering a dialogue between diverse artistic works and languages. PONTORMO 9 OCT-7 FEB

The Scuderie del Quirinale hosts the first major monographic exhibition devoted to Jacopo da Pontormo (1494-1557). Pontormo was a leading figure of the 16th-century Florentine school, embodying the shift from the High Renaissance to Mannerism. His eccentric reworking of classical models secured him a devoted following in the 20th century, inspiring figures as diverse as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Bill Viola, while collectors worldwide have long prized his work. He also remains a firm favourite with the wider pub-

lic, thanks to the striking originality of his creative vision. Visitors to the Rome exhibition will be able to see Pontormo’s key masterpieces reunited alongside an exceptional selection of works on paper. Centre stage will go to Pontormo’s celebrated Visitation, on loan from the Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Carmignano, near Prato. The exhibition follows a largely chronological path, punctuated by thematic explorations. Together with a substantial number of loans from the Uffizi, further exceptional pieces will arrive from institutions including the Accademia Gallery, the Bargello Museums, the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, the Louvre, National Gallery in London, British Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art in Washington, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Getty Museum. Organised by Ales - Scuderie del Quirinale in partnership with the Uffizi Galleries, the exhibition is curated by Cristina Acidini, a leading authority on the Florentine Cinquecento, supported by a team of distinguished scholars.

KEITH HARING 6 OCT-11 APRIL

Rome presents a comprehensive retrospective dedicated to the late

American artist and social activist Keith Haring at Palazzo Braschi. The exhibition features more than 140 works, on loan predominantly from the prestigious Nakamura Keith Haring Collection. Best known for the graffiti-like drawings of his early period, Haring later turned to a wide range of references. Before his death at 31 in 1990 from AIDS, he became also widely known for his social activism, concentrated on drugs, racism, nuclear armament, AIDS and discrimination. Rooted in the turbulent, predigital landscape of 1980s New York, the showcase traces Haring’s career from early Subway Drawings to his final creations, reflecting his core conviction that “art is for everybody.” The thematic layout explores transit art, political activism, bodily vitality, and symbolic imagery. Key sections highlight Haring’s intense engagement with urgent social issues - such as antiracism, LGBTQ+ rights, and the AIDS crisis - alongside vibrant, fluorescent representations of human connection. Crucially, the display examines Haring’s historic connection to Italy, documenting projects in Naples, Milan, Pisa and Rome. Ephemeral transit works created in Rome in 1984, long since lost,

REMBRANDT - NERO ASSOLUTO 26 SEPT - 21 FEB

Rome’s Museo Storico della Fanteria hosts an exhibition dedicated to Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the greatest printmakers in art history, titled Rembrandt – Nero Assoluto. La rivoluzione dell’incisione (“Absolute Black. The revolution of etching”). The show brings together around 50 works on loan from public and private collections, exploring the Dutch artist’s pioneering use of etching. Curated by Patrizia Foglia, the exhibition traces themes of light and shadow, the sacred and the everyday, selfportraits and scenes of daily life, through which Rembrandt probed the depths of the human psyche. Among the highlights is the etching Self-Portrait with Saskia, which features on the exhibition’s promotional artwork. The show opens with a sequence of Rembrandt’s finest etched self-portraits, in which the artist tested the expressive possibilities of the medium alongside his own psychological exploration. The Museo Storico della Fanteria is located at Piazza di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme 9. It is open Monday to Friday from 09.30 to 19.30, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 09.30 to 20.30, with last admission 30 minutes before closing. Tickets are available online via www.ticketone.it.

He led some of the country’s most significant environmental campaigns, among them Operazione San Francesco to protect the wolf, and efforts to defend the Marsican brown bear and Italy’s national parks. His

work contributed to the passing of the 1991 framework law on protected areas. Through television, books, articles, school visits and activities in the WWF Oasi network, Pratesi introduced generations of Italians to the natural world, arguing that conservation begins with knowledge and attention to one’s surroundings. KANDINSKY

15 SEPT-14 FEB

Palazzo Bonaparte opens its autumn season with a retrospective devoted to abstract artist Vassily Kandinsky, the first such exhibition in Italy in more than 25 years. The show brings together over 70 works drawn largely from the estate of the artist’s wife, Nina Kandinsky, with a loan from the Centre Pompidou, made possible by the Paris museum’s temporary closure for restoration. Curated by Angela Lampe, the exhibition unfolds across five sections tracing Kan-

dinsky’s journey from a lawyer in Moscow to a leading figure of the European avant-garde. Highlights include two of his most celebrated compositions, Yellow-Red-Blue (1925) and Black Arc (1912), works that reveal Kandinsky’s belief that painting could resonate like music and speak directly to the soul. There is also a dedicated section on Gabriele Münter, shown in Italy for the first time. Long overshadowed by her role as Kandinsky’s partner, Münter is presented here in her own right as a key figure of Expressionism, following renewed international interest in her work. The exhibition is further enriched by period photographs, personal letters and biographical material. Palazzo Bonaparte, Piazza Venezia 5, www.mostrepalazzobonaparte.it.

VERMEER’S WOMAN IN BLUE 8 JULY-11 OCT

Rome’s Palazzo Barberini will host Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece, Woman in Blue Reading a Letter. The celebrated work is on loan from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, in the

latest international collaboration by the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica. Painted around 1663-1664, this canvas is a pinnacle of the Delft master’s career and one of the most celebrated images of 17th-century Dutch art. Bathed in soft window light within a quiet domestic interior, the young woman embodies Vermeer’s characteristic themes: everyday intimacy, narrative suspension, and light as a tool for structuring space and emotion. Curated by Thomas Clement Salomon and Paola Nicita, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to experience Vermeer’s genius in Italy, where none of his roughly 30 universally recognised works are permanently held. The display incorporates digital content exploring the painting’s history, Vermeer’s meticulous technique, and its cultural context. Visitors will also appreciate the Rijksmuseum’s 2010 restoration, which removed aged varnishes to restore the original, luminous intensity of the blues. Palazzo Barberini, Via delle Quattro Fontane 13, www.barberinicorsini.org.

TROY AND ROME 12 JUNE-18 OCT

The Parco Archeologico del Colosseo hosts a major exhibition at the Colosseum, titled Troy and Rome: Myths, Legends, Stories of the Ancient Mediterranean, bringing together more than 300 objects tracing three millennia of shared civilisation between Italy and Anatolia. More than 220 of the objects on display are loans from 19 Turkish museums, with 50 of them never before exhibited in Italy. A further 80 works come from Italian museum collections. The exhibition opens with a monumental replica of the Trojan Horse, and its four main sections move from the historical and topographical reconstruction of the site of Troy - including an overview of the Hittite world and the cultures of ancient Anatolia in the third and second millennia BC - through the Trojan War as seen from the Trojan perspective, the wanderings of Aeneas, and finally the myth of Romulus and the foundation of Rome. The exhibition arises from a bilateral agreement signed last year aimed at reinforcing cultural cooperation between Italy and Turkey. spective titled Diego Rivera and the Construction of Modern Art in Mexico in the 20th Century. Promoted by the city of Rome and the Mexican embassy in Italy, the exhibition positions Rivera at the nexus of a visual and conceptual narrative, charting how modern Mexican art engineered an autonomous identity by balancing academic tradition with bold avant-garde experimentation. Curated by Miguel Fernández Félix and Alberto González Torres, the retrospective comprises more than 140 works, including 30 pieces by Rivera himself. It also features works by his contemporaries, including Frida Kahlo, José María Velasco, María Izquierdo, and fellow muralists José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The display is further enriched by documentary videos and evocative photographs, notably Rivera’s portraits captured by Tina Modotti. Capitoline Museums, www.museicapitolini.org.

CULTURE NEWS VILLA ALBANI TORLONIA EXPANDS ANTIQUARIUM

The Torlonia Foundation has expanded its Antiquarium at Villa Albani Torlonia in Rome, opening a newly restored exhibition space to the public last month with a show dedicated to ancient coloured marbles from the Torlonia Collection. The Marmora Romana exhibition adds 20 sculptures to the Antiquarium’s permanent display, 15 of which have been recently restored in the Torlonia Laboratories, bringing the total number of works on show, including original columns from the Torlonia Museum, to 44. The Antiquarium first opened in 2024 to mark the foundation’s 10th anniversary. Housed in the former stables, or Scuderie, of Villa Albani Torlonia, the new space showcases the range and craftsmanship of coloured stone used in Roman interiors, through busts, architectural fragments, capitals, table supports and sculptures. Among the highlights is the Torlonia Cup, also known as the Medici Cup, a large Roman-era vessel carved from green Egyptian breccia with a 16th-century base, made from stone quarried in Egypt’s Wadi Hammamat and among the most prized materials of the ancient world. Also on display is the so-called Alexander from the Giustiniani Collection, alongside busts set on ancient column drums in a layout echoing the historic Torlonia Museum. The works trace how Rome’s expansion eastward from the late second century BC brought it into contact with Hellenistic marble architecture, fuelling a trade in coloured stone that, by the Augustan era, saw once-rare materials become part of everyday imperial building and decoration. The Antiquarium, at Villa Albani Torlonia, Via Salaria 96, Rome (entrance at Via Salaria 92), is open free of charge from Tuesday to Sunday, 09.00-13.00. For more information see fondazionetorlonia.org.

PAINTED CITY AND GIANT MOSAIC OPEN AT BATHS OF TRAJAN

A €10 million restoration project to resurrect Rome’s lRestoration works at the Baths of Trajan at the Colle Oppio have brought to light what is believed to be the largest wall mosaic ever found in the Roman world,

alongside a rare fresco of an unidentified walled city. The project focused on the upper spaces of the southwestern exedra, roughly 30 metres in diameter, and the underground gallery beneath it, which houses two exceptional ancient artworks. The works were carried out under the PNRR-funded Caput Mundi programme. The Painted City is a fresco of around 10 square metres offering a bird’s-eye view of a walled city with towers and buildings shown in perspective. Dating to the first century AD, it belonged to a building that predates the Baths of Trajan. The identity of the city depicted remains unknown. The Great Mosaic is an imposing wall decoration, uncovered so far to a height of around five metres, depicting an elaborate architectural scaenae frons, or theatrical backdrop, with statues and figures across two registers, including a bearded philosopher, a centaur and a poet being crowned with laurel. According to archaeologist Francesco Pacetti, who worked on the excavation, it is believed to be the largest wall mosaic ever found in the Roman world, and excavations are continuing to find its full extent; a newly revealed section depicts grape harvesting and winemaking. Further excavation also uncovered an additional mosaic band showing a port city, likely depicting the so-called “maritime villas” motif, along with traces of a marble-clad wall and a decorated marble niche standing at 2.2 metres high, suggesting the original room reached some 12 metres in height. Both discoveries are dated to the second half of the first century AD. The exedra’s two rows of niches are thought to have held books and documents, with the surrounding steps used by those attending public readings and gatherings, while a portico once ran along the underground gallery below. Alongside the restoration, works have included a new reception area and bookshop, a walkway linking the two sections of the gallery above the Great Mosaic room, new lighting, paths and viewing areas, a tiered seating area for events, and a mechanised link between the upper and lower levels. Public access will begin on a trial basis, with small guided groups, to monitor the impact of visitors on the delicate artworks. Free guided tours in Italian, by reservation, will be available from 2 October, with six daily slots of up to 15 people at 10.00, 11.00, midday, 13.00, 14.00 and 15.00. Bookings can be made by calling tel. 060608.

PUMPKIN RISOTTO WITH GORGONZOLA PUMPKIN IS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR A PERFECT HALLOWEEN-THEMED RECIPE.

This time of year sees the versatile orange flesh used throughout Rome for a wide array of savoury dishes, pizza toppings and sweet pies and tarts. This recipe uses a creamy pumpkin purée, infused with a slight hint of sage, with spicy kick of gorgonzola to create a hearty risotto, ideal for the colder autumn nights. Although here used with rice, the pumpkin purée could also be used as the base of pumpkin soup (just add vegetable stock) or combined with crunchy guanciale or pancetta for a great pasta dish.

Ingredients 10 fresh sage leaves 700g pumpkin Extra virgin olive oil 1 red onion, chopped 60g butter

(Serves 4)

6 small (espresso) cups of Arborio rice 100ml white wine 1 litre vegetable stock 100g gorgonzola piccante, cut into cubes

First tie the sage leaves together with kitchen string. Remove any rind from the pumpkin and cut the flesh into 2cm cubes. Heat about 5 tablespoons of olive oil in a large pan and add the the chopped onion, pumpkin and sage. Season with salt and pepper and cook on a low-medium heat until the pumpkin is soft and falling apart (about 25-30 minutes). Then remove the bunch of sage leaves and blend the pumpkin into a smooth, creamy purée. In a separate saucepan, melt the butter with a tablespoon of olive oil and add the rice. Season with salt and toast for 3-4 minutes. Add the white wine and cook until the alcohol evaporates. Pour in enough pumpkin to cover the rice, add ladle of vegetable stock and continue to cook on a medium heat, stirring continuously. When the rice has absorbed almost all of the liquid add the rest of the pumpkin and continue cook, stirring all the time and adding more stock when necessary, until the rice is al dente, about 15-20 minutes. Turn off the heat and add the gorgonzola, stirring well to melt it into the sauce. Serve immediately.

The best vegan and vegetarian restaurants in Rome From breakfast to dinner, from bistros to restaurants, the choice for veggies and vegans in Rome is ever wider. You can enjoy delicious dishes that don’t skimp on flavour or cause any harm to animals. SO WHAT?!? The dishes at this totally vegan restaurant in Pigneto recreate traditional recipes (there being a particular focus on zero km and organic products). So it’s not just spoonfuls of veloutés and salads here, you can enjoy starters such as gluten-free fettuccine with ragu and pesto gnocchi with sage and cashews (€8.50), to mains such as zuccotto made with lentils in the Mediterranean style (€8.50) and desserts such as tofu cake with blueberries and ginger (€5). ROMEOW CAT BISTRO The cooking at this bistro that’s seemingly half run by cats (the eatery’s permanent residents), is entirely vegan, taking inspiration from Indian and Mexican cuisine, while also serving a menu of raw food. You can enjoy muffins, brownies and raw cakes for breakfast, for lunch and dinner there’s troccolo (thick spaghetti) with wild asparagus, a light turmeric cream and asparagus chips. LA CAPRA CAMPA One of Rome’s best known vegan bistros offers only 0 km vegetables, that come directly from the Lazio countryside: the flours, legumes and grains are all organic, and the dry fruit is fair trade. And if that isn’t enough, the gluten-free and ‘vegan cheeses’ are made in-house.

UNIVERSO VEGANO If you’re craving fast food and tasty paninis, look no further than Universo Vegano, the cruelty-free franchise that uses no products that are derived from animals and serves only home-made Italian food, using no conservatives or colourants. You can try the vegetarian pizza, the Bolognese vegan lasagne, the paella or the tofu and spinach cannelloni. IL MARGUTTA Known as RistorArte, is famous in Rome for being an excellent vegetarian restaurant where you enjoy, other than gourmet food, art exhibitions, theatre shows, book launches, meet-ups and debates. At Il Margutta, from brunch until dinner time, the dishes are made with the highest quality products. There’s a tasting menu (and even a vegan menu available) or you can eat from the à la carte menu. ORTO A vegetarian restaurant in Prati where the food is affordable and the portions are huge, packed with lots of organic vegetables and delicious local olive oil. For dinner there’s an à la carte menu and at lunch time there’s an enormous buffet. There are also two specials each week for when you feel like trying something a little different.

GREZZO If you’ve got a sweet tooth and don’t want to give up the cheese cake, tiramisù and other delicious desserts, there’s Grezzo, the raw patisserie and chocolate shop. The tasty raw chocolate is manipulated at low temperatures to keep all the nutritional qualities of the cocoa. All the desserts are completely vegan and gluten free.

LE BISTROT A vegan and vegetarian restaurant with a retro vibe, serving traditional recipes with a focus on Mediterranean flavours. You can try the onion or vegetable soup (€12), black spaghetti with taggiasca olives (€12) and red turnip and truffle risotto (€12). Don’t miss the desserts – there are traditional sweet treats or vegan and gluten free versions.

UOVO À POIS If you feel like a sweet treat made with whole-wheat flour and natural, unrefined sugar (the only exception being the icing sugar and food colourings used in the cake decoration), and free from milk and hydrogenated fat, this organic, gourmet patisserie is the place for you. There are also whole cakes available to order and pastries made with alternative sugars.

FIORE CRUDO E VAPORE A restaurant where the cuisine combines local and traditional recipes with raw cooking. As a result vegetarians, vegans and carnivores alike feast beside one another. The restaurant tries to satisfy every taste and dietary requirement, with organic produce and a huge menu. You can try gourmet dishes, raw food recipes, salads and a selection of raw and traditional desserts.
